Welcome to the Week 5 edition of The Wire Report for the 2021 NFL season. In this article I’ll be highlighting some of the top players that should still be available in your season long leagues.
We now have 4 weeks of games in the books. Some roles are becoming clearer than others. We also have some players starting to shine in spots where they are covering for injured players.
Below are my top waiver wire targets:
Damien Williams – Running Back – Chicago Bears (10.2% rostered in ESPN Leagues)
After David Montgomery left the game Sunday with a knee injury it was Damien Williams that stepped up and produced. Williams rushed the ball 8 times for 55 yards, averaging nearly 7 yards per carry. He was also able to catch 2 passes for 15 yards. If Montgomery were to miss time having Williams on your squad is a solid move.
Randall Cobb – Wide Receiver – Green Bay Packers (13.6% rostered in ESPN Leagues)
With MVS on the shelf with a hamstring injury Randall Cobb took a more prominent role in the offense than he had through the first 3 weeks. He was targeted 6 times and caught 5 of them for 69 yards. Cobb was on the receiving end of 2 TD passes from his old pal Aaron Rodgers. These 2 have a long history and I can see this happening more often than not in future weeks. If you’re in need of a Wide Receiver you could do a whole lot worse than Randall Cobb.
Jamison Crowder – Wide Receiver – New York Jets (14.6% rostered in ESPN Leagues)
Jamison Crowder made his season debut and what a debut it was. Crowder caught 7 of his 9 targets for 61 yards and a TD. Wilson and Crowder clicked right away and now that Wilson has his weapon it’s going to be a bit more fun to watch the Jets than it was through the first 3 weeks. I’m not saying a whole lot of a fun, but more fun than it was. The Jets get a juicy match up with the Falcons and if you’re in the 86% of the leagues where Crowder is available, pick him up.
Dalton Schultz – Tight End – Dallas Cowboys (21.6% rostered in ESPN Leagues)
Schultz now has 3 weeks of at least 6 targets and has TD’s in back to back weeks. Schultz is becoming a favorite of Prescott and gets a great match up this weekend against a Giants team that has historically been poor against Tight Ends. With a floor of 6 targets he’s becoming someone that we can rely on for production out of the Tight End spot.
Kenneth Gainwell – Running Back – Philadelphia Eagles (24.6% Rostered in ESPN Leagues)
With Miles Sanders struggling, Kenneth Gainwell is becoming a more important part of the Eagles offense. While he only had 3 carries this weekend, he was able to make the most out of them as he had 31 yards and a TD. That was his second rushing TD on the year. He was also a dual threat as he was targeted 8 times. Gainwell turned those 8 targets into 6 receptions and 58 yards. With him producing and Sanders struggling I can see Gainwell cutting even more into Sanders touches.
Taylor Heinicke – Quarterback – Washington Football Team (10.2% Rostered in ESPN Leagues)
Taylor Heinicke now has 3 straight weeks of multiple touch down passes. This week against the Bills he had arguably his best game as he passed for 290 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had his best game on the ground with 43 yards on 5 rushes. While he wasn’t the QB Washington was expected to play this season, they have to be extremely happy with the production they have seen so far. In week 5 he gets a match up vs. a Saints team that just gave up 400 yards to Daniel Jones and the Giants. If you’re a Jimmy G owner and in need of a QB this weekend Heinicke is as solid of an option as there is.
