NBA DFS Picks and Pivots: Slate Breakdown
The NBA DFS landscape over the last week has changed relatively dramatically post the NBA Trade Deadline as while we still have a month and a half until the “official” end of the NBA season, it feels like we have hit peak chaos between injury news, COVID and NBA trades and buyouts impacting rotations across the league.
For myself, and I know many other folks in the Win Daily Sports community, we are excited about the start of the MLB DFS season this week and personally I cannot wait to start rolling out Picks and Pivots for baseball all summer long!
However, we still have a few days of NBA DFS before that overlap and while I am being fully transparent when I say, I will be scaling back my NBA bankroll once MLB is here – it does mean we get another few days to build that bankroll with some massive NBA DFS slates including two 10+ gamers in the next three days.
Tonight, once again, injury news reigns supreme as we have big questionable tags with Bradley Beal, Kyle Lowry, Steph Curry, Julius Randle, Evan Fournier, Lonzo Ball, and Christian Wood all sporting the dreaded red Q’s on DraftKings.
On top of that we already know Kendrick Nunn, Victor Oladipo, Jarrett Allen, Lu Dort and Mitchell Robinson are OUT and so you start to see the likely crazy value/news that will dictate a slate with 22 teams in the player pool.
Building a Core:
Looking at this slate, it is incredibly front-loaded with 7 of the 11 games tipping off in the first hour of lock and some of the biggest news comes in the lone 7 PM EST game as we await word on Bradley Beal’s status for the Washington Wizards.
This game between Indiana and Washington is arguably the best DFS environment on the slate and becomes an easy GPP stacking target if Beal is ultimately ruled out due the the value it provides.
Over the last 10 games, Washington and Indiana both rank in the top 10 in pace with the Wizards leading the league while these two teams both also rank in the bottom 5 in team defense curing that time with the Wizards giving up the most points per game in the league with the Pacers just a few spots behind!
Assuming Beal is out, this game, and arguably the slate, all starts with Russell Westbrook ($11K) as anytime we get him running solo, in the highest pace game on a slate against a bottom 5 defense – you are staring at a slate breaking ceiling type of game.
The last game that Beal missed, against the Bucks on 3/13, it was Rui Hachimura ($5.9K) that became the clear #2 in usage and fantasy production with a 52 DK outing on the back of 29 points and 11 boards.
For value – it is likely we see both Garrison Matthews and Deni Avdija in the staring line-up if Beal is out and with both players at $3.5K or lower, it is tough to argue a better value pairing within this game stack. Listen, we know Washington stinks defensively, but the Pacers are bottom 5 in defense and play at a similar top 10 pace so do not be afraid to go heavy run back with Washington pieces here tonight.
The Pacers side of this game all starts with Domantas Sabonis ($9.6K) who gets one of the best match-ups possible, is under $10K on DK, and presents you with the ideal run back in a Westbrook centric build. The highest correlated pairing with Sabonis is PG Malcolm Brogdon ($7K) and this 1-2 punch gives you a mid-range mini-stack with considerable upside.
The other piece I am really intrigued by tonight is Myles Turner ($5.9K) and it comes almost entirely as a result of his massive blocks upside. Turner has 5 or more blocks now in 4 of his last 6 games and Washington is giving up nearly 6 blocks per game over the last two weeks.
Turner is a risky GPP option and stacking partner with Sabonis/Brogdon because his value almost entirely lies in his block equity. In his previous two games where he has not had big block games, he has gone for 13 and 19 DK points so the floor is SUPER risky but the ceiling is 6X and in a game that will be played at a fast paced with little defense – it could offer us the ideal Turner spot.
NBA DFS Picks and Pivots – The Wrap Up
As we ramp down the NBA DFS season towards MLB DFS season, these 10+ game slates are going to be tough to tackle with so much uncertainty surrounding players/teams which will require is to be diligent in our process.
Tonight, the slate very literally starts with the Pacers/Wizards, but from a DFS perspective, I would argue it becomes the same core starting point. If Bradley Beal is out, you have the opportunity to build around Russell Westbrook and Damontas Sabonis in a star-heavy build in arguably the best DFS game environment of the night. No defense, all pace, and a ton of value – giddy up!
