NASCAR DFS Pit Stop: Cup Series 7/12/20

Welcome to NASCAR DFS Pit Stop: Cup Series for Sunday’s race from Kentucky Speedway! This is the last race of the huge 4 race weekend from Kentucky. We saw some great action in both Thursday and Friday’s races. We got a rain-shortened Truck Series race Saturday night (because, 2020) and now we close it out with the “big” Series on Sunday!

This is only the 10th Cup race at Kentucky Speedway and as we’ve seen this weekend passing here is tough, especially for the lead. Over the last 3 races here there has only been an average of 7.5 green flag passes per lap. In the previous 9 races here the winning cars’ average starting position is 4.9. There have been also been 6 winners starting from inside the top 5, with 3 pole sitters earning victories. Brad Keselowski has the most wins at Kentucky with 3 wins. Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. both have 2 wins each here, and Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch own one win each.

NASCAR DFS: Dominators

Both Kevin Harvick ($11,600) and Denny Hamlin ($10,900) have been the class of NASCAR since the return to track and have combined to win 7 of the 12 races. Neither of them owns a win at Kentucky but with the way they have been driving, I won’t be shocked to see the 4 or 11 in victory lane on Sunday. If you can only roster one, I would go Harvick, because he starts 3rd and if he can get out front he could run away and lead the majority of the laps in this race. Either way, both are two of the top plays on Sunday.

Kyle Busch ($10,100)

Starting Position: 1st

Kyle has dominated at Kentucky, and I know I keep saying this every week, but eventually, the 18 will win a race this year so why not this week. In 9 races at Kentucky, Busch has eight top 10’s and seven top 5’s. Busch has also led more laps here than anyone with 621 laps led, almost 100 more than Keselowski who is second with 524.

Joey Logano ($9,600)

Starting Position: 2nd

Logano won way back in February of this year at Las Vegas, which is a comparable track to Kentucky. While he didn’t dominate at Vegas, he did lead 54 laps (3rd most on the day, Harvick and Elliott both led more). With Logano starting on front row with Busch, he is a great pivot off him if you need the salary relief. Logano could take the lead from Busch immediately since Kyle has not had the best start to his races this season.

Other Options: Chase Elliott (P8 – $10,500), Christopher Bell (P34 – $11,200), Ryan Blaney (P11 – $9,800)

NASCAR DFS: Mid Tier

Brad Keselowski ($9,000)

Starting Position: 6th

See Kyle Busch above. Keselowski has been great at this track like Kyle, but he has a little more upside based on starting position. Like I mentioned earlier, Keselowski has 3 wins here and has led the second-most laps in track history. I don’t mind pairing Keselowski with Logano or Busch as split dominators. Keselowski can obviously win here and lead the majority of the second half of the race while Busch or Logano could lead the first half.

Erik Jones ($8,400)

Starting Position: 16th

Jones has raced here at Kentucky 3 times in the Cup series and has finished no worse than 7th. In fact, Jones has averaged a 5.3 finish here in those three races. Jones is someone who, if he can stay clean, could easily finish inside the top 5 for the second time in 2 years.

Tyler Reddick ($8,200)

Starting Position: 24th

Tyler Reddick is my place differential play of the day. He has been one of, if not, the best rookie drivers in 2020 thus far. In 4 Xfinity Series starts at Kentucky, Reddick has a win and four top 10 finishes. Reddick had been on a little bit of a slide coming into Indianapolis last week, but he finished 8th there and another top ten is in store for him on Sunday.

Other Options: Kurt Busch (P7 – $7,600), Martin Truex Jr. (P9 – $9,200), Matt Kenseth (P17 – $8,000), Jimmie Johnson (P20 – $8,800)

NASCAR DFS: Value Tier

Here are my value tier ranking for Sunday’s race:

  1. Cole Custer – P29th – $6,900
  2. Michael McDowell – P30 – $5,700
  3. Bubba Wallace – P18 – 7,000
  4. Aric Almirola – P4 – $7,300
  5. Austin Dillon – P19 – $6,500
  6. Ryan Newman – P23 – $6,100
  7. Alex Bowman – P5 – $7,400
