MLB DFS Stack City (Apr. 19)

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Stack City, where I’ll be going through the top MLB DFS Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel

We’re now close to 2 weeks into the season and one thing has been abundantly clear, power numbers are way down.  Just this past Sunday we had more SB’s than HR’s.  That hadn’t been done for I believe 30 years.  With stacking, we’ll continue to need to tread carefully as chasing homers is going to be tougher and tougher, making full stacks all the more important.

Always make sure to read Adam’s Starting Rotation when setting your lineup.  It’s hands down the best pitching article in the MLB DFS business.

Let’s dig in and see if we can find some stacks to use today!

MLB DFS Stacks – Main Slate

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Kyle Freeland

The Phillies just keep disappointing this season.  At some point, they’re going to break out for another big game and I’ll want to make sure I have them in my lineup.  Hopefully, after last night’s dud, it will lower their ownership numbers for tonight.  This is a good spot for them to break out because Kyle Freeland is on the hill and he’s always been one of my favorite targets to attack.

Freeland has now started 2 games this season and both have been poor.  He’s given up 5 ER to each of the Cubs and Dodgers.  The Phillies can do this too.  I have faith!  I’m also more encouraged by this matchup because the Phillies as a whole have been much better against lefties this season than righties.  As a team, they have a .899 OPS and a .244 ISO against southpaws.

This stack is going to start with Nick Castellanos.  Castle was one of their big free-agent acquisitions this winter and so far he’s been pretty good for them, especially against lefties.  On the year, Castle has a 1.357 OPS and a .550 wOBA against lefties.  He’s always been someone that can handle lefties pretty well and this year has been no different.  He’ll be my core here.

Rhys Hoskins is another guy smoking the ball against lefties so far in this young season.  His ISO so far is at a .800 and his OPS is 1.771.  Between Hoskins and Castle, we have 2 guys that should do extremely well in this matchup tonight.  While those 2 are my core, I’ll also want to add Jean Segura and Alec Bohm to my stack.  Both guys are off to solid starts against southpaws on the year and won’t break the bank for us.

Boston Red Sox vs. Yusei Kikuchi

Kikuchi’s Blue Jays debut did not go as planned, as the lefty only lasted 3 and a third innings vs. the Yankees.  Kikuchi was just unable to miss any bats as the Yankees had an 85% contact rate against him.  This led to a WHIP over 2, with 5 hits against him and 2 walks.  This is going to be a tough matchup for Kikuchi as the Red Sox have a bunch of guys in this lineup that have historically done well against southpaws.

I’m going to start this stack with Kike Hernandez.  Hernandez is off to a blazing start against lefties, something he’s always been known for.  Through his first 14 PA, Hernandez has a .385 ISO against them.  Even if we go back to the start of last season, his numbers against lefties are very solid with a .224 ISO.  He’s going to set the tone for the Red Sox tonight.

Another hitter that’s showing some encouraging signs this season is JD Martinez.  After a couple of down years against southpaws, Martinez has appeared to right the ship.  While the sample size is very small because it’s so early in the year, Martinez has a .333 ISO against them this year with a 67% flyball rate.  If the Red Sox are going to do damage in the AL East, they’ll need the old Martinez to return.

Other important pieces here will be Xander BogaertsTrevor Story, and Bobby Dalbec.  We will however need to keep an eye on this lineup tonight for Covid reasons.  Make sure to have some pivots handy.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. J.T. Brubaker

Mr. Brubaker has not looked overly sharp to start the 2022 season, giving up 4 runs to both the Cardinals and the Nationals.  If we look at his career as a whole, are we really surprised though that he isn’t doing well?  Last year was his first full season and he pitched to a 4.63 ERA and a 4 xFIP.  He’s someone that really hasn’t shown much success yet at the Major League level.  While his splits aren’t that exaggerated, he’s given up more power and average to lefties and that’s where I’m going to start my Brewers stack tonight.

My Brewers stack will start with Christian Yelich, who finally had his breakout game last night.  While the Grand Slam was great, the 3 hits were really an encouraging sign.  He’s starting to see the ball better and that’s going to be important for the long-term success of the Brewers.  This is a great spot for him to keep the momentum going.

Another bat I’ll want here is Kolten Wong.  Since the start of last year, Wong has had a .333 wOBA against righties.  While the numbers for him haven’t been great this year, this is a great matchup for him to get right.  Anytime he gets on base, he’s a lock to make things happen.  Over the last week, he’s been on base 5 times, scoring on 4 of those chances.  I’ll also look to include guys like Rowdy Tellez and Andrew McCutchen.

MLB DFS Main Slate Summary

We should have a night clear of weather so that’s always a positive.  I know the Phillies have been a bust of late, but they’re my favorite place for offense tonight.  They get a great matchup against a subpar southpaw.  Other spots I like for offense tonight are the Rangers vs. a struggling Robbie Ray and the Diamondbacks vs. Joan Adon.  If the Diamondbacks had a better lineup, they would crack my top 3 due to such a good matchup.

Good luck today and hope to see some green tonight!
