Welcome back MLB DFS fans! Tonight, we have another solid slate on DraftKings with big prizes pools to take down so let’s get started with our top MLB DFS picks for today’s slate!
For those of you new to Picks and Pivots, the goal of this MLB DFS article each and every day is to provide you a “First Look” overview of the slate where we use DraftKings pricing as a baseline to help us get started. Rather than simply write out the “top plays,” this article will focus on slate strategy and roster construction with a GPP mindset to help you get started on your initial builds. Without further ado, let’s dive into today’s slate!
MLB DFS Picks and Pivots: Starting Pitchers:
The Starting Pitching options on the Main Slate tonight at first glance all feel over-priced and underwhelming with Clayton Kershaw and Jake Odorizzi the only arms over $10K.
Chris Paddack ($7.9K) stands out to me as one of the better bang for your buck plays tonight as we get an arm with strong K metrics who gets the benefit of pitching at home in a ballpark he has had sustained success in. In two starts this season at home, Paddack has put up 18 and 22 fantasy points including his first start of the year against the same Arizona team he faces today. Last year, Paddack made 10 starts at home and went for 25+ DK points in 5 of those outings including one against this Arizona squad he faces today.
After hitting on Antonio Senzatela yesterday, I want to go right back to attacking the Seattle Mariners and today’s option is cheaper than most bats I want to target – a $4K pitcher from the Rockies named Ryan Castellani.
I mentioned this yesterday but pitchers against the Mariners has been a think all year – in fact 10 of the 15 starters who have faced them in 2020 have gone for 12+ DK points. If you get 12 DK points from a $4K pitcher – you are off and running with some of the big bats we have on tap today.
Now playing a pitcher with a 8.31 ERA in AAA last season doesn’t seem ideal – but that bloated ERA did some with a 23% K rate and the scouting reports showed that after he ended his AAA season due to bone chips in his elbow – he went back to a 3/4 delivery that gives a tailing action to his 95 MPH+ fastball.
Castellani’s price is what draws you to him – but the fact that he has K stuff against a Mariners line-up we know we can attack makes me very intrigued for GPP purposes today!
MLB DFS Picks and Pivots: Stacks and Bats:
Because the pitching is underwhelming today – to me it is all about the bats and that starts with the two best offenses on the slate – the Dodgers and Twins.
The Dodgers did what they do – hit 4 HR’s last night against a terrible pitcher and tonight they get another terrible pitcher in Johnny Cueto Much like we did with Shark last night, we attack Cueto with lefties as his .313 ISO versus LHB since 2019 supports – so go ahead and fire up the usual suspects – Bellinger, Muncy, Joc but keep an eye on the value as we got Edwin Rios last night and could see Matt Beaty as well. These two priced at $2.7-$2.8K on DK opens up a world of salary relief for you if they make the lineup.
The Twins meanwhile take on LHP Danny Duffy – a pitcher who gives up power and HC to right-handed batters and oh well, the Twins basically have a whole lineup full of those guys. It all starts with Garver, Cruz and Sano who all have .330+ ISO marks against LHP since the start of last season.
MLB DFS Picks and Pivots: Wrap up
TThe Dodgers and Twins stacks are not going to be sneaky but in the context of this slate, they offer you the most upside when we consider the pitching, frankly doesn’t offer you that route. So, paying up for bats that can win you the slate seems like the best bet here today!
