MLB DFS Hitter Stacks (July 3)

Welcome to the Sunday edition of the Stack City, where I’ll be going through the top MLB DFS Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel.

Our main slates on both DK and FD start at 1:35 PM EST and they include the same nine games. There are no major weather spots that should greatly affect either offensive output or risk delay/PPD except the usual summer heat moving into the country’s baseball venues and clicking up the HR/FB rate a few clicks.

We should once again peruse Adam’s Starting Rotation article as our first order of business to help decide on arms, for the early and main slates.

Now it’s time to get to the stacks and build that bankroll!

MLB DFS Hitter Stacks – Main Slate

Houston Astros vs. Jose Suarez

I’m just going to keep playing Jose Altuve until it burns me, or he reaches the $6K price range, but I have a feeling that the latter might come before the former. The former MVP has been raking form the leadoff spot lately and gets another great matchup vs. a LHP in Suarez. This Angels team is clearly in a rut and the Astros have a slew of bats from both sides of the plate that absolutely destroy southpaws. Suarez, in particular, ha s FIP north of 4.50 and a walk rate that could but him against a team that sports a .185 ISO this season. Over the last 14 days, that ISO has been an impressive .245.

Along with Altuve, I’ll be getting as much exposure to Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker as possible, and mixing in shares of Jeremy Pena, Chas McCormick, Alex Bregman and Jake Meyers. It’s really a matter of picking the right bats from Houston, so I’ll be overweight enough to get a few different combinations in there depending on salary and how they fit with my SPs and the remainder of my bats.

Atlanta Braves vs. Luis Castillo

It’s up around 85-90 degrees in Cincinnati today, and I’d expect this to be one of the more high-scoring games on the early slate, even with both teams rolling out reliable starters in Castillo and Charlie Morton. I have no problems going right back to the well with stacks that draw from the likes of Ronald Acuna, Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Dansby Swanson Michael Harris and Orlando Arcia.

The Braves are not cheap, but they seem like a much better play than the Yankees against Triston McKenzie, exactly the type of young pitcher with a good curveball who gives them trouble. The Braves get to face Castillo, on the other hand, and they should absolutely annihilate his fastball. If he mixes in a lot more of his sliders and changeups than usual, they could be in trouble, but I could see them battering his fastball around and killing his confidence early.

Contrarian Stack: Milwaukee Brewers vs. Zach Thompson

The Brewers are best against RHP and might fly under the radar a bit today after yesterday’s letdown loss to the Pirates, but they get to face Zach Thompson and his 5.57 FIP today and get back to the mashing that made them such darlings of the Friday night MLB DFS scene.

Rowdy Tellez, Christian Yelich and Kolten Wong are the more obvious top two plays, but we should get plenty of exposure to Omar Narvaez, Willy Adames and Luis Urias. None of the Brewers bats are over $5K today, and they could make sense as a solid alternate to the more expensive Yankees and Blue Jays.

Value Stack: Miami Marlins vs. Eric Fedde

The Marlins are a top ten offense this season against RHP, and while I wish they were rolling out more lefty bats against Fedde in this matchup, they are cheap enough that we can pick a few guys to fill out some three- and four-man stacks in large-field GPPs.

Like the next team mentioned, I’d be wary about getting to much exposure — but the stage is set to get some continued production from Jon Berti, Joey Wendle, Garrett Cooper, Nick Fortes and the Jesus Twins — Jesus Aguilar and Jesus Sanchez. Brian Anderson is also really cheap at just $2,500 on DK. If I had to chose a mini-stack from this bunch, I’d likely settle on Cooper, Anderson and Sanchez, but I’m really hoping that Fortes gets the start today since he has so much success against sliders — an important pitch for Fedde.

Buyer Beware: Minnesota Twins vs. Tyler Wells

Eventually, some team is going to barrel up Wells and knock him around for 5-6 ER over the course of a couple innings — but he’s 15 starts into the 2022 season and still rocking a 3.23 ERA and 4.34 FIP despite a K rate that’s been cut in half from 10.26 in 2021 to 5.56 this year. As he limits hard contact (24.4%, down from 34.2% in 2021), Wells has burned MLB DFS sharps looking to get ahead of the curve and feed off the inevitable regression.

Today, the Twins could roll out a lineup that features five L/S bats, but the Orioles starter has handled lefties and their 122 plate appearances well, to the tune of a .250 wOBA this season. If anything, I’d be interested in using Luis Arraez, who can hit anybody, and the righty bats that make the most sense in this matchup, including Byron Buxton, Carlos Correa and Gary Sanchez. The switch-hitting Jorge Polanco homered yesterday and would be the one to round out my five-man stacks on DK, but I’m skittish about putting too many Twins stacks in the mix on a day they could be overly chalky because of the perception that Wells is a tire fire waiting to happen.

MLB DFS Main Slate Summary

It’s not a super obvious slate and we could see a few big surprises, especially without too many clear aces at SP and the possibility of some excellent SP2 value. But there’s a few spots to take advantage of and enough value that we should be able to build some high-upside lineups that are still relatively safe.

Good luck today, and remember to show us your green screens in Discord!
