MLB DFS Aces & Stacks (Aug. 16)

Welcome to Wednesday’s edition of Aces and Bases, where I’ll go through the top MLB DFS Aces and Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel.

Happy Hump Day!  It’s Wednesday and we’re back with an 8-game slate of MLB DFS.  At first glance, this slate looks to be a ton of fun.  We have some great matchups, but we also have some really solid pitching on the mound.  Stacks should also be plentiful as we have some really bad pitchers in really bad spots tonight.

Let’s dig in and make some money!

MLB DFS Aces – Main

Luis Castillo vs. Kansas City Royals

I’ll preface this by saying that the Royals can be an extremely pesky lineup.  For a team that is currently 43 games under .500, they have some firepower in their lineup that can make a night for a pitcher pretty unsettling.  With that being said, I really like Luis Castillo.  He’s not some run-of-the-mill starting pitcher, he’s a true ace-level pitcher that can easily dominate this Royals lineup.

Over the last month, Castillo has been strong.  His K rate is 33% and his ERA is a very respectable 3.77.  He should be able to have a solid night vs. the Royals and the Mariners are going to need him to bring his A-game as they still sit 2 games out of the Wild Card Spot.  Castillo is my SP1 tonight.

Jon Gray vs. Los  Angeles Angels

I still have no absolutely no idea why the Angels thought they had a chance at the playoffs this season and didn’t try and get a major haul for Shohei Ohtani.  Since the All-Star break, the Angels have been absolutely atrocious.  If we look at just the past week, they’ve been even worse.  They have a 33% K rate with just 15 runs scored.  Both numbers sit in the bottom part of the league.

They’ll face off against a pitcher in Jon Gray that has shown flashes of brilliance this year.  One of those was his last outing vs. the Giants where he struck out 7 in 7 innings and didn’t allow a single run.  This is a similar matchup for him and one he should excel in.  At just $6.9k on DK, he’s a lock for me in lineups.  That price is more than 1K cheap than he’s been in months.

Other pitchers I like tonight are going to be Kevin Gausman vs. Philly and Blake Snell vs. Baltimore.

MLB DFS Stacks – Main

Atlanta Braves vs. Randy Vazquez

The Yankees rookie gets the daunting task of getting to tame the Atlanta Braves tonight.  This may be the toughest job out of anyone throwing tonight as the Braves lineup is just filled with power and ability to get on base.  Vazquez has only made 4 appearances in the bigs this season, with one coming recently against the Miami Marlins.  In that game, Vazquez went 3 innings with allowing 2 ER.

As well as the Marlins have played this season, they have nothing, and I mean nothing on the Braves.  The Braves should be able to get to Vazquez early and often in this one.  We don’t have much splits data on Vazquez because he hasn’t thrown much in the Majors, but so far lefties have shown a bit more power vs. him.

Knowing that I’m starting off my Braves stack with Matt Olson tonight.  Olson is in the midst of a career year and it’s only going to continue to get better and better.  His numbers against righties this season have been spectacular.  He’s sporting a .441 wOBA to go with a .360 ISO.  There are few in the game better than him right now.  One of those that are better than him is Ronald Acuna.

Acuna is also having a career year and is on the cusp of a 30/30 season.  With a month and a half to go, a 40/40 season is not out of the question.  He just needs to have a later power surge.  Other than these 2, the rest of the lineup is in play where you can fit them.  They should put up a massive number tonight against a spot starter.

Boston Red Sox vs. MacKenzie Gore

A lot has to go right for the Boston Red Sox to make the playoffs, but they aren’t going to go down without trying.  They are 6-4 in their last 10 and have won 2 straight.  They’ll also get a glorious matchup tonight vs. a struggling pitcher in MacKenzie Gore.  Over his last 27 innings of work, Gore hasn’t been good.  He’s sporting an ERA over 5 and has allowed 7 homers in this innings.

He’s also allowed 11 barrels.  He’s just giving up way too many fly balls right now and those have been coming back to bite him.  With Gore, we don’t really need to focus too much on splits.  Lefties overall have been a bit better vs. him but the righties have hit for more power.

I’m starting off my Red Sox stack with Trevor Story.  Since coming off the IL, he’s actually been quite good.  Over the last week, Story has 7 hits in 18 AB and has a 1.061 OPS.  He’s been a huge bat missing for this team, but they now have him back for the playoff push and hopefully, he can help them sneak into the Wild Card.

I also really like Justin Turner here. Turner has been really good vs. lefties this season, with a .400 wOBA and a .274 ISO.  He should smash in this spot.  After Turner and Story, I’ll look to include guys like Adam Duvall, Rafael Devers, and Rob Refsnyder in the leadoff spot.  The Red Sox are in a great spot to have a really strong night.

Other stacks I like tonight will be the Padres vs. Dean Kremer, Cubs vs. Mike Clevinger, and Dodgers vs. Wade Miley

MLB DFS Summary

For a small slate, this one provides us with a healthy amount of options on the mound and at bat.  It should be a fun one!
