Welcome to Monday’s edition of Aces and Bases, where I’ll go through the top MLB DFS Aces and Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel.
Happy Labor Day! It’s Monday and it’s a holiday and that means we have day baseball! Today’s big slate will be the 7-game slate of MLB DFS starting at 2pm EST. I’ll be solely focused on those games. This slate brings us one of the bright young pitchers in the game and it also brings us some teams that are in superb spots to blow up today.
Let’s dig in and make some money!
MLB DFS Aces – Main
Cole Ragans vs. Chicago White Sox
Before this season, I never would have thought to challenge the White Sox with a lefty. They were essentially lefty killers and attacking them with a southpaw would have been considered insane. Alas, it’s 2023 and we have a very average White Sox team vs. lefties. In fact, they’ve actually been below average vs. southpaws this season. To make matters worse, they’ll be facing one of the best and bright young pitchers in the game this afternoon.
Ragans has been electric. Over his last 30 innings of work, Ragans has a nasty 37.50% K rate and just a 2.05 ERA. Pitchers, especially young ones, are always at risk of blowing up for a game. With how Ragans has been pitching, I just don’t see it happening today. I’m locking him at just $7.2k today. Expect him to be popular though.
Justin Steele vs. San Francisco Giants
I wish the weather in this one was a little bit better for pitchers. Unfortunately, the wind is blowing out big time today and that will make it a little more difficult for Justin Steele today. That said, this is a splendid spot for him. The Giants have been brutal vs. lefties this season. They’ve been one of the worst teams overall vs. southpaws in 2023.
We’ll attack them this afternoon with a pitcher in Steele that has been pitching well. Over the last month, Steele has an ERA of just over 3 and a respectable K rate of nearly 29%. Steele has also been the model of consistency. Over his last 8 starts, he’s failed to get at least 15 DK points 0 times. $10k is a little more than I’d like to pay for him, but this is a great spot for him this afternoon.
Other pitchers I like today are going to be Merrill Kelly vs. Colorado and Bryan Woo vs. Cincy. I don’t really plan on straying from the Ragans/Steele combo though.
MLB DFS Stacks – Main
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Peter Lambert
The Arizona Diamondbacks get one of the better matchups on the board today as they get to take on Rockies righthander Peter Lambert. While Lambert hasn’t really gotten blown up too many times, his time is coming and it’s coming on Labor Day. He just gives up way too much at 77% and way too much of that contact is considered hard contact.
Over the last month, Lambert has allowed a 54% hard-hit rate. That’s atrocious. If you give up too many hard hits, eventually most will fall and you’re going to give up a lot of runs. That’s what I’m banking on today by stacking against him. With Lambert, I’m not going to be concerned with splits. He gives up very similar numbers to both sides of the plate.
Any Diamondbacks stack needs to start with Corbin Carroll. He’s the future of this franchise and will more than likely be the Rookie of the Year this season. He’s been super strong vs. righties this season as he has a .399 wOBA and a .282 ISO. He’s in line to have a strong day against a very beatable pitcher. Once Carroll gets on base, he’s also a strong lock to steal a base.
He’s pricey at $5.5k, but he should smash today. After Carroll, the regulars that I like to play in my Dbacks stacks are going to be Ketel Marte, Christian Walker, Alek Thomas, and Lourdes Gurriel. Each of these guys possesses a decent amount of power and has shown success against righties this season. I love this spot for the Diamondbacks today.
Oakland Athletics vs. Jose Berrios
Jose Berrios is back to pitching like a bum these days. Over the last month, Berrios has a 5.53 ERA and has been giving out homers like they are candy. Over his last 27 innings of work, he’s given up 7 bombs. That’s a lot and the worst ratio of the day for any pitcher throwing on this afternoon slate of MLB DFS Can Berrios shock us and pitch a gem?
Absolutely, especially with him throwing against the Athletics. Using the Athletics has been risky this season as they are one of the worst teams in baseball. That said, when you get them right in the right matchup, they have been a money maker. Today, they’ll be a money-maker for us! We’ll want the lefties here as Berrios has really struggled vs. them this season.
Knowing that Berrios has struggles vs. lefties, I’m going to start my A’s stack with Ryan Noda and Seth Brown. Each of these guys has the potential to take Berrios deep this afternoon. Brown on the year has a .220 ISO vs. righties. Noda’s is a little lower at .164 but I still love the spot for him today.
After those 2 lefties, I also like some righties. Brent Rooker has really well this season, so much so that he was an All-Start. Other guys to use here will be Zack Gelof and Jordan Diaz. Be cautious with your use of the A’s today, but if we get them right we’ll make a decent amount of money today.
Other stacks I like today are the Royals vs. Scholtens and Rangers vs. France.
