The Course
The PGA DFS slate heads to Detroit where Donald Ross has designed a par 72, 7334 yard course. This course plays longer and has four par 5’s. With only one water hazard, Ross is very good at protecting his greens with an abundance of deep bunkers. The fairways are also lined with trees that come with substantial foliage. An errant drive off the tee may leave the ball in deep rough that will be blocked from finding the green.
Typical to any other Ross design, there is a premium put on ball striking here. Accuracy off the tee will be more valuable than pure distance. Strokes gained on approach is equally important. Hitting the greens in regulation has been a priority to getting on the leader boards. Ross is famous for building greens back to front so our golfers will find a steep, fast, downhill putt if they go long. Once on these Bentgrass/POA surfaces, I’m looking to put a little more emphasis on the flat stick. We want to capitalize on some of these par 4’s and 5’s. Putting becomes important for scoring.
Recent Ross layout winners include Woods, Schauffele, McIlroy, Snedeker, Stenson, Bradley, and last years Rocket Mortgage winner Nate Lashley. He had a solid week (+5.3 strokes) with his irons, and was on fire (+9.3 strokes) with his putter. One thing these golfers have in common is some of the best iron games in the world. That’s where I’ll be looking this week.
The Golfers
Taking projected ownership and DraftKings salary into consideration on this PGA DFS slate, lets look at some of my favorite plays this week.
Hideki Matsuyama ($10200): Typically worse on Bermuda greens, I expect Deki’s ownership to be obtainable. He had a poor showing on the greens 2 weeks ago where he missed the cut at the RBC Heritage. Mats has one of the best long iron games in the world. A solid bounce back performance in this average field can be expected this week.
Bubba Watson ($9200): Bubba missed the cut on the number last week as a heavy chalk favorite. His ownership has dipped drastically because of it. Let’s take a look at some statistics over the last 24 rounds. SG:OTT 2nd, SG:BS 14th, SG:T2G 15th, and SG:P4 2nd. This salary and ownership make him an interesting play. You will soon see that I’m using a strategy to get 3 top golfers into a lineup
Kevin Na ($9100): Na ranks 6th in my model for this PGA DFS slate. It’s hard not to look at him after his 5th place performance at the Traveler’s last week. A solid approach, and putting game is exactly what I’m looking for. I’d like him to be a bit more accurate off the tee. Regardless, a great play at this salary.
Scottie Scheffler ($9000): Make no mistake about it, he’s been cold lately. We leave the confines of some of these smaller courses and let Scottie air it out again. I think he takes full advantage of the par 5’s and has the upside to get back to the top 5, where he was earlier in the season.
Not to give the wrong impression. I DO like Bryson DeChambeau, Webb Simpson, Tyrrell Hatton, Patrick Reed, Victor Hovland, and Sungjae Im as well. Simply trying to get more power into a single lineup without attracting too much ownership is a strategy that allows me to build lineups for single entry GPP’s. Let’s take a look at some of the other names to be considered.
The Others
Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Erik Van Rooyen, Harold Varner III, Maverick McNealy, Scott Stallings, Will Gordon, Sebastian Munoz, Peter Uihlein, Kyle Stanley, Tyler Duncan, Sam Burns, Matthew Wolff, Aaron Wise, Cameron Tringale, Cameron Davis, Shawn Stefani, and Chase Seiffert.
They all haven’t made my lineups yet, but I just wanted to give you a look at my player pool so far.
