The Insight Sheet gets you ready before lock of THE PLAYERS Championship. Inside is my personal player selection. Make sure to be on Discord tonight to get final questions asked and for help with lineup building. As always, the sheet uses DraftKings pricing but the model is set up for overall play. Players can be used on all sites.
**All the players priced $9,000 and up, I honestly have no problem with anyone playing them, except for Webb, don’t play Webb. I’ll list in order the guys in my pool and leave a note if necessary.**
PLAYERS priced $10,000 and Up
Rory McIlroy $11,700 (M1)
Jon Rahm $11,000 (M2)
Brooks Koepka $10,200 (M20) – This is a pure ownership play. He’s one of the top 10 players in the world when right. The problem is he hasn’t been right. With his problems on the field and his price bump, Koepka is looking at possibly sub-five percent ownership. In my 20 max, I’ll have two shares. His last round at the API, looked like he was rounding into form, this may be the week that he’s back.
PLAYERS priced between $9,900 and $9,000
Adam Scott $9,600 (M3)
Bryson DeChambeau $9,100 (M7)
Patrick Cantlay $9,800 (M13)
Tommy Fleetwood $9,000 (M14)
PLAYERS priced between $8,900 and $8,000
Hideki Matsuyama $8,800 (M4) – Matsuyama is 12th in the field in Strokes Gained over the last five events including two top 10 showings before the API. Since the start of the 2020 season he’s gained strokes in approach every week and T2G in every start outside of one.
Paul Casey $8,200 (M8) – Casey hasn’t played in a few weeks but is coming off of three made cuts and an 11th at the WGC Mexico (harder field like the Players Championship). The putter has always been Casey’s problem but anytime he can mustard even a single point positive, he finishes in the top 20.
Jason Day $8,400 (M10) – This is ownership only play like Koepka before. He has all the measurables to win and at $8,400 is a huge bargain if healthy. He WD at the Arnold Palmer Invite and backed out of his Pre-Tournament press conference this week. Day has been down this track before and has come out on the winning side along with owners of his willingness to take the ride. Projected ownership of 3%.
Rickie Fowler $8,900 (M39) – A GPP play only, Fowler is coming in around sub 10% ownership. he’s coming off a solid final round at the API where he finished 18th. A former winner that has a price reduction into the eight thousand, is worth a flier.
PLAYERS priced between $7,900 and $7,500
Collin Morikawa $7,900 (M4) – PLAY HIM! With that said he’s should come close to 30% in cash and SE/3Max. Would not blame anyone for getting off the train as leverage.
Scottie Scheffler $7,500 (M22) – Coming in with three consecutive cuts made and finishing inside the top 30 each week, with a T15 at the API. A newbie to THE PLAYERS is suppressing his ownership below 10%. One of the best in the field in these types of course conditions for ball striking, I would not be surprised to see Scheffler inside the top 15.
Shane Lowry $7,800 (M53) – Doesn’t grade out well in my model but should do well here. The 20th ranked player in the world is coming in making his last two cuts at the Honda and WGC Mexico with back to back T30 or better finishes. For a $100 less and about 10x less ownership, Lowry would be the perfect pivot off of Morikawa.
PLAYERS priced between $7,400 and $7,000
Harris English $7,200 (M18) – He is downright terrible at The Players. Five straight missed cuts leading up to this year. Luckily at TPC Sawgrass, history isn’t everything. English does have a T9 and T17 coming into this week. What’s also impressive is DataGolf has him ranked 37th in the world while OWGR still has him on 158th. At a projected 4% ownership, English has the potential to send your lineups skyrocketing to the top.
Ian Poulter $7,300 (M25) – Poulter is the exact opposite in the regard to tournament history as in, Poulter has made his last five cuts at Sawgrass. While history isn’t everything as aforementioned, Poulter backs it up with to cuts at the Honda and API. With sub 10% ownership, Poulter isn’t sexy but a great salary saver with a high floor and a decent ceiling.
Daniel Berger $7,200 (M29) – One of my favorite plays this week, Berger has four straight made cuts here with a T9 in 2016. Two top fives his last two tournaments and is 8th in the field in strokes gained during the last five tournaments. Look for Berger to be a core piece in my 20 max.
Matthew Fitzpatrick $7,300 (M34) – Fitzpatrick has a great finish to the API last week with a round of three under finishing with a T9. Fitz has four straight cuts coming in. The 25th ranked player in the world somehow only has a 10% ownership projection. Take advantage now because in the upcoming weeks that number is almost guaranteed to rise.
PLAYERS priced $6,900 and below
Kevin Streelman $6,300 (M24) – I don’t play Streelman often but when I do, he comes in second at the ATT Pro-Am. Streelman is a good iron player who is 24th in the field in my scoring matrix. At this price and no ownership, all you’re looking for is a cut made and some upside at The Players.
Scott Piercy $6,700 (M27) – Before his missed cut at the API, Piercy has back to back T20’s at the Genesis and ATT Pro-Am. While he doesn’t have a lot of success at TPC Sawgrass, he does have two cuts made in the last five with a T23 in 2016.
Charley Hoffman $6,000 (M58) – Like Piercy, Hoffman has hit or miss history at The Players. His form did start to look like it was rounding in form last week with a T13. Hoffman tends to start warming up around this time as last year after the API (T14), he went T36 (WGC), T12 (Masters) and T23 at Harbour Town. I hope to jump on the train before the seats are all gone next week.
Jimmy Walker $6,000 (M-IDK) – Walker is so far down the models ranking its tough to find him. Once you do though, he still looks unimpressive. Digging deeper though he’s coming off two back to back T25 at the API and Honda. Walker also has three straight made cuts at The Players including a T2 in 2018. For almost zero ownership and a bare min salary, I’ll have plenty of shares this week.
