Insight Sheet: Sentry Tournament of Champions

The Insight Sheet gets you ready before lock with my personal player pool. Broken down by price and preference, we go into detail why the players have been selected. This week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, with such a limited field, the player pool will be much shorter than usual.

The numbers don’t mean too much, just know the lower numbers are better. For Overall, it roughly gives you an idea how close golfers are to each other.

Players priced $10,000 and up

Justin Thomas $11,200 – Thomas comes in number one in my model this week, which really shouldn’t be a surprise. He’s coming off the President’s Cup win, highly projected by many to possibly win Golfer of the Year and has very limited holes in his game.

Jon Rahm $11,400 – Number two in the model and the Vegas favorite to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Rahm has played the TOC twice, both top 10 finishes. A decision between Thomas and Rahm will probably need to be made for each lineup but having exposure to both will be wise this week.

Dustin Johnson $10,100 **Pivot** – Johnson should come in roughly 10% percent lower in ownership over the top two guys and $1000 cheaper for salary relief. Johnson has dominated this tournament in the past (9 appearances with 7 top 10 performances), but played poorly last year and is coming off an injury, hence the lower price tag.

Players priced between $9,000 and $9,900

Patrick Cantlay $9,800 – Cantlay comes into the tournament 3rd in Birdie or better behind only Thomas and Rahm. Where Cantlay can really win out though is his scrambling ability which he ranks number one in this tournament. With several bunkers surrounding the greens, scrambling could be a key to victory.

Patrick Reed $9,000 – Everyone hates Reed right now and if that drives down his ownership at the TOC, even better. Reed has played this tournament five times with three top 10 finishes including a 1st and 2nd place finish. Sign me up for the recency bias.

Players priced between $8,000 and $8,900

Paul Casey $8,800 – Before his two poor showings in the fall swing Casey finished 3rd at the Tour Championship. Casey is a better bent green player but if he can get the flat stick working, he has a shot to finish inside the top five.

Collin Morikawa $8,600 – Morikawa has a solid all-around game. He ranks a little lower in the model but he only played a third of the season in 2019. In 14 events, he’s finished in the top 15 six times with a three top 5 and win. While it doesn’t matter here at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Morikawa has never missed a cut.

Players priced between $7,000 and $7,900

Chez Reavie $7,600 – Reavie doesn’t have the distance that you might like to see at the TOC but he’s one of the better wedge players in this field. He placed 5th in a similar tournament in the Tour Championship. For DFS purposes, he’s 7th in the field in DK scoring and a player I’m trying to fit in as much as possible.

Keith Mitchell $7000 – Mitchell is more of a GPP only play and squarely a pivot off of Munoz (highest owned in the range and possibly the field). Mitchell’s Tee to Green game is solid and his driver is a major asset, especially on these wide fairways. It’s the putter that gives him fits, but he’s coming back to Bermuda greens where he thrives. He won the Honda Classic defeating Koepka and Fowler along the way. He’s also coming off a T14 at The RSM Classic. I’ll take a shot with Mitchell with half the ownership of Munoz (who is a great play, especially for cash).

Players priced between $6,000 and $6,900

Lanto Griffin $6,500 – Griffin will probably be the most popular play in the 6K range and rightfully so. Starting with the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, Griffin seven straight top 20’s including a win at the Houston Open. Granted they weren’t against the stiffest competition but the consistency is impressive. Griffin has cooled off these last two outings leading to the Sentry Tournament of Champions but at his price and popularity, he should be a cash game cornerstone.

Tyler Duncan $6,400 – Duncan is coming off a win at The RSM Classic and had a T4 at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship. Duncan has been rather lackluster in between though, which makes him a GPP dart throw for DFS. With a possible stars and scrubs approach though, you’ll need salary savers and Duncan should come in around 10% ownership despite the 34 player pool.

SIDE NOTE: This is a limited player field with no cuts for the weekend. Highly recommend playing with a lite bankroll and sticking with 3 max or less GPP/Cash Games.
