Welcome to the 11th edition of Formula 1 Race Week: Red Bull Ring, Austria, July 2022.
You guessed it, the Red Bull Ring is owned by Red Bull! Your teachers must be proud. The team might have its race operations in England, but this is the home track of Red Bull. The Red Bull Ring is a quick circuit with pole position being accomplished in 1 minute and 6 seconds.
This was a sprint weekend. Meaning that the grid was set by the results of the sprint race held on Saturday. If there is one thing I do like about sprint races it shows the cars compared to each other in a faster setting, as the race is only 25 laps.
It was the usual characters up the top of the standings this weekend as Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Russell, and Sainz were in the top 10. Let’s find some good plays this weekend by exploring…
Formula 1: DFS Top Captain Options
Max Verstappen, Red Bull $18000
It is Max’s weekend to lose. His Red Bull flows around this track. The public will roster him en masse, and I see no issues with that.
Either Ferrari ($10,700) drivers
Charles Leclerc $16,800 Charles is the top driver in the second-fastest car on the grid. After some highly questionable strategy calls from Ferrari, Charles should have “win at all cost” on his mind. I think it makes sense to use him in the captain spot if playing multiple lines and try to get him in most lineups with Max.
Carlos Sainz Jr $14,400 Carlos kept with Charles in the sprint race, if he can maintain position in the race, those extra podium points will be very helpful.
Formula 1: DFS Mid Tier options
Fitting in Sergio Perez for $9000 is going to be difficult. But Sergio is piloting the other fastest car on the grid. He was buried on the sprint grid due to his lap time being deleted for going off the track. With a different strategy than Ferrari and George Russell, he could easily finish on the podium.
Mercedes
The Mercs are the 3rd fastest manufacturer. Putting George Russell at $8400 and Lewis Hamilton at $10,200 in the top 10 finishing position almost all season. I would prefer George to Lewis, but anything can happen in racing. Lewis will be a contrarian play.
Esteban Ocon $5800. Fernando Alonso has had some bad luck in race trim all season. he reminds me of the Alpha Tauri’s which are great in one-lap trim but put them in race form and they fall apart. Esteban stands to take advantage of a quicker car than Haas and should battle for a top 10 finish at a discounted price.
Valtteri Bottas is similar to Esteban but at a higer price tag.
Formula 1: DFS Other options
Haas $3500
After a double points finish last weekend in England, the Haas looks capable enough to repeat the performance. Kevin Magnussen $4000 and Mick Schumacher $3800 will be the heaviest used value pieces by the field this weekend. Haas was battling the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas on Saturday. This was no fluke as Haas showed the 4th fastest car in Free Practice 1. Haas race pace kept them in the fight, and if you want to use the top-end drivers, Haas $3500 will be the key this weekend.
Formula 1: DFS Value 5-point options
Alex Albon $3600 is always fiesty and will fight for your 5 points and Latifi being terrible helps.
Stroll $4200 the Aston’s look racey on Sundays and should beat his teammate.
Zhou $3200 If Valtteri starts in the back, there’s potential for Zhou to finish ahead of Bottas.
DFS Constructor options
- Red Bull $11,700 Max has all the ability to win this race, his teammate Sergio Perez should finish top 5.
- Ferrari $10,700 is the 2nd best constructor. The gap to Mercedes always leaves Ferrari in play.
- Haas $3500 is the value play in the constructor position.
Race Week Red Bull Ring, Austria Grand Prix DFS overall strategy
This week will be chalky on paper. But it is racing, anything can happen. I will be taking shots with different drivers and hedging bets with teammate swaps.
