Welcome back to another exciting season of CFB! We are starting Week five action on Saturday with a big 12-game slate. We are starting to enter conference matchups, which always make for great environments. The highlight of the slate looks to be USC traveling to Colorado to take on Deion Sanders and his Colorado squad.
The purpose of this article is to break down the college football main slates both on the DFS and betting sites. The article includes my favorite plays at every position as well as honorable mentions. You can also find my favorite bets under my Dragos Best Bets section.
The QBs:
Like last week the matchup that everyone is on this week is USC vs. Colorado. QBs Caleb Williams and Shadeur Sanders are definitely in play, but since the majority of people will be on them, I won’t be including them in the QB write-up.
Luke Altmyer (IL): $5,700
Altmyer may seem like a weird choice to start the QB section, but he has a great matchup Saturday. Altmyer takes on Purdue, who have been one of the worst pass defenses in CFB. The Boilermakers have given up 255.8 yards per game, which puts them in the bottom 30. On paper, Altmyer doesn’t look great, but if you take away his game against Penn State, which is one of the better teams, he has 716 yards and four touchdowns in the other three games. Altmyer is also a threat running, as he has just under 150 rushing yards this season. With Purdue having a solid pass rush, I expect Illinois to move the pocket for Altmyer, which should allow him to break off a few solid runs.
Who to pair him with: Isaiah Williams, Pat Bryant, Casey Washington( risky play)
Garrett Shrader (SYR): $7,400
Picking a QB against Clemson’s defense has worked well for me so far, so I’m going back to the well. Clemson has played two good QBs this season, Leonard and Travis, and they have both hurt the Tigers. Shrader will now be the third good QB that Clemson will face, and unfortunately for them, he has similar skill sets to the first two. Shrader, like Leonard and Travis, is not only a good passer, but he also has the ability to find space and take off. He has surpassed 300 yards rushing this year and has scored six times using his legs. It’ll be a long day for Clemson if they can’t improve on their 104th-ranked pass rush.
Who to pair him with: Damien Alford, Ok to run solo as well.
Quinn Ewers (UT): $8,700
Ewers’s Heisman campaign continues, as this week he’ll welcome in a solid Kansas team. Through two games, Ewers has found success, averaging 25.8 points on DraftKings. On paper, this Kansas defense is a lot better than the ones we have seen in the past. But this matchup has the second highest total (61.5), only behind the USC at Colorado game. If Ewers gets off to a hot start, then the Texas pass offense should be able to go off and create the shootout that is expected.
Who to pair him with: Xavier Worthy, Ja’Tavion Sanders
Honorable Mentions: Seth Henigan (MEM) $8,000. Max Johnson (TA&M) $8,200. KJ Jefferson (ARK) $7,300. Taulia Tagovailoa (UMD) $8,700. JJ McCarthy (MICH) $8,400. Hudson Card (PUR) $6,600. Taylen Green (BSU) $6,200.
The RBs:
Ashton Jeanty (BSU): $6,800
My favorite RB on the slate Jeanty leads all RBs on the slate in DK points, averaging 35.6 per game. He is taking full advantage of RB1 Holani being sidelined with an undisclosed injury. His dominant run should continue this weekend against one of the worst rush defenses in CFB. Their opponents, Memphis, rank in the bottom half in yards and touchdowns allowed. Jeanty has the best shot to finish as the RB1 on the slate.
Daijun Edwards (UGA): $6,000
It seems like DraftKings still isn’t sure how to price Edwards after he missed Georgia’s first two games. Edwards has been on fire in his two games this season. He has 32 carries for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Edwards should continue to be relied on, as this will be QB Beck’s first real road test. On paper, Auburn has only given up 87 yards per game, but against Texas A&M and Cal, they allowed their best backs to finish with over 15 DraftKing points.
Will Shipley (CLEM): $5,900
Another 6K RB that I like a lot this week is Shipley. This hasn’t been the best year for Clemson, as their two ACC losses just about guarantee that they won’t make the CFB playoffs, but Shipley has been a bright spot for them. Shipley has rushed for just under 300 yards this season and has 96 receiving yards. Clemson should rely heavily on Shipley, as the game against Syracuse is a must-win if they still want to make the ACC title game. Shipley proved last week against FSU that he can produce even against a strong defense like Syracuse, as he finished with over 100 total yards.
Honorable Mentions: Devin Mockobee (PUR) $6,400. Mar’Shawn Lloyd (USC) $7,600. LeQuint Allen (SYR) $5,700. Jaydn Ott (CAL) $8,100. Jonathon Brooks (UT) $6,200. Blake Corum (MICH) $8,300. Roman Hemby (UMD) $7,200. Blake Watson (MEM) $6,5000
Value RBs (5K and under): Jaylin Lucas (IU) $4,600. *Favorite value play*
The WRs:
Zachariah Branch (USC): $6,100
His teammate Brenden Rice also works, but I like Branch’s higher ceiling compared to Rice’s safer floor. In his three games this season, he has had exactly four catches in each one. He’s only found the end zone once as a WR, but he also handles the returns, which has helped him grab another touchdown. If you want the upside, go to Branch, but if you want a safer play, go to Rice for $500 more.
Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen (PUR): $5,200
Yaseen has been a great target for Purdue this season. In each of his four appearances, he has had at least four catches, each with a high of 10. He leads the Boilermaker in catches with 22 while only sitting 14 yards behind Burks for lead in yards. His only knock is that he hasn’t scored, but this game has a shootout feel, so it’s not out of the question that he’ll find the end zone for the first time this season.
Evan Stewart (TA&M): $7,200
Stewart had an off week last week after Texas A&M’s starting QB went down. He should see an uptick in points this week, as he should have built a connection with Johnson during the week. Even after struggling last week, Stewart is still averaging seven receptions, 102 yards, and a score per game. He is the second-highest WR on the slate, so he’ll be harder to fit in, but if you have the salary, he should finish as a top-5 WR.
Honorable Mentions: Ja’Tavion Sanders (UT) $4,700. Jeremiah Hunter (CAL) $5,900. Brock Bowers (UGA) $5,400. Xavier Weaver (COL) $6,800. Andrew Armstrong (ARK) $6,200. Cam Camper (IU) $5,300. Xavier Worthy (UT) $6,500.
Value Plays (4.5K and under): Jalin Conyers (ASU) $4,000. Max Klare (PUR) $4,100. Corey Dyches (UMD) $4,500. Colston Loveland (MICH) $4,500. Michael Harrison (COL) $4,500.
Drago’s Best Bets:
- Syracuse +4.5 (Alt spread)
- Michigan -17.5
- Illinois vs Purdue Over 53.5
