With the NHLseason beginning Wednesday, we thought we would give you an NHL Betting Primerthat you can refer to throughout the season.
There are several ways to make money betting hockey and you could have a successful NHL season if you are willing to put in a little work alongside the tools we have at Win Daily. Let’s get this thing started!!
Let’s getinto a few important terms you’ll be reading about daily at Cash with the FlashBest Bets;
Bankroll
This is the moneyyou have on account somewhere or in your pocket if you live in a state wheresports wagering is legal. Cash with the Flash has a bankroll of 100 units forhockey this season.
Unit
Think of aunit as cash and a unit is between one and five percent of your total bankroll.If you have a bankroll of $1000 dollars and divide that by two percent, eachunit would be worth two dollars and a five-unit bet would cost you 10 bucks. Asyour bankroll increases, the unit price rises and decreases the same way duringinevitable cold streaks.
BankrollManagement
You willhear this term EVERYWHERE at Win Daily Sports and Cash with the Flash BestBets. Generally, you don’t want to wager more than five percent of yourbankroll on any given contest. That’s why cappers refer to plays by “units” andnot “stars”. We’ll show you how that works next.
The MoneyLine
This is themost popular method and one we’ll be using throughout the NHL season. Most ofthe books offer .20 cent lines meaning there’s a .20 cent difference betweenthe favorite and the underdog.
Detroit +135
Las Vegas-155
If I want toplay Detroit, and the capper suggests a three-unit play on Las Vegas to beatDetroit, you would need to risk 4.65 units to win three units. Playing a four-unitplay or higher at -155 should rarely be done because you’ve broken the goldenrule of bankroll management by going over the five percent rule.
Anotherthing you’d like to avoid is taking chances of playing favorites over -200 becausethe risk far exceeds the rewards on wagers like this. There are certainly timeswhen these bets MUST be played but for the most part, you should avoid thesewagers.
The PuckLine
It’s thesame thing as the MLB run line and your sheet will look like this;
Detroit +1.5(-220)
Las Vegas-1.5 (+240)
If youbelieve Las Vegas will win by two or more goals, you would need to wager one unitto win 2.4 units. The reason the favorite pays out so well is that most hockeygames are one-goal affairs with 10 percent of games ending with a score of 3-2.Conversely, wagering on Detroit to cover the -1.5 goals would be unwise as itwould cost 2.2 units to win just one unit.
The Total
Again, itworks the same way as an MLB total and the sheet will look like this;
Detroit vsLas Vegas under 5.5 goals (-110)
Detroit vsLas Vegas over 5.5 goals (-110)
Beingmindful that 10 percent of NHL games end with a 3-2 score, you will wager 1.10unit to win one unit on the scenario you think will likely happen. You will seemore five-unit plays on lines like these as an extra half unit over our five-unitmax bet won’t be that costly if you don’t do it too often.
The GrandSalami
This bet is fun because the totals of every game are involved and the number on a 10-game slate will begin around 52 goals to as high as 70 goals. Usually, these bets payout at even money to has high as +1.50. Vegas Insider offers a monthly Grand Salami Tracker you can use to see what happened last season on any given night in the NHL.
The Closing Number
Informationregarding injuries and such happens all the time and that usually moves theline one way or the other.
Let’s sayyou laid down the -155 on Vegas to beat Detroit and at four o’clock in theafternoon word leaks that Vegas forward Max Pacioretty is ruled out. That linewill likely drop to -135 or less and could close closer to -115 at faceoff. Ifyou played Vegas at -155 you ended up on the wrong side of the line. Do that toooften and you will lose in the long term.
Unless Ireally LOVE a line, I like to make my hockey wagers 30 minutes prior to faceoffand then later check at Pinnacle to seewhat the actual closing line was for that game. If I’m under the number I am ahappy camper and if I’m not I know I must prepare better the next day.
Parlays
Cashwith the Flash Best Bets usually avoids these types of plays because of the riskinvolved. A parlay is a group of two or more bets (legs) and all bets must-winfor the ticket to pay off. The more bets on the ticket, the more unlikely theticket will pay off. Vegas Insider offers a free calculator for you todetermine what an individual ticket should pay off if it hits.
GoaltendingMatters
This is justlike baseball and goaltenders are to hockey what pitchers are to baseball.Anyone handicapping a game without considering the goaltender is not doing itright and Cashwith the Flash Best Bets spends more time talking about goaltending thananything else. Corsicais the best free advanced stats website and their goaltendingstats are the best in the business.
Try andavoid stats like goals-against averages and wins and stick to stats like ExpectedSave Percentage (xSV%), Delta Save Percentage (dSV%) and GoalsSaved Above Average (GSAA) as truer indicators of how a goaltender isreally doing. CorsicaHockey has all these stats and more and totally FREEat their amazingsite.
