NHL DFS Hot Shot for DraftKings and FanDuel (Nov 22)

Tonight, we have a huge fourteen-game slate to satisfy our hunger before Thanksgiving “Unlike the NFL, there are no NHL games scheduled tomorrow”. There are lots of options to choose from and we will cover a few of them below. Given the size of this slate, I highly suggest against running full three-man lines and instead recommend pivoting to two-skater pairings.

Columbus One – “Boone Jenner ($6,700), Johnny Gaudreau ($4,600)” – Two-man Only

I’m not sure there’s anything on this slate that jumps out by heads and shoulders. As is, there will be nothing per se “popular” given how much ownership will be spread out on the 14-game slate. I think the key here is trying to avoid paying up and instead trying to find moderately priced players with upside.

This pick is not rooted in statistics but rather in belief and the odds. The Blue Jackets are -148 money line favorites tonight hosting a struggling Blackhawks team in a 6.5 projected total game. “Johnny Hockey” has been god-awful so far to start the season as Columbus deals with a case of buyer’s remorse. Nevertheless, this feels like a get-right spot. Both Boone Jenner and Mr. Hockey also feature on the Blue Jacket’s top power-play unit. Collectively, they cost an average of $5,650 when paired, leaving us plenty of money to spend elsewhere. Remember, we don’t have to pay Johnny’s actual salary, just his $4,600 DraftKings salary.

11/22 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line

New York Islanders Two – “Brock Nelson ($6,000), Kyle Palmieri ($4,500)” – Two-man only

Unlike the two-man line listed above, this one is rooted a bit more in the metrics. As always when I list the Islanders you can call me a bit of a homer if you wish. However, tonight the Isles have the same exact moneyline odds as the Blue Jackets listed above at -148. The two skaters listed above are affordable and also share time on the Islander’s top power-play unit. Over the last ten games, this line is fourth in the NHL in SATF “125”. The Flyers have been good defensively and this one has a six total. Furthermore, the Islanders don’t exactly inspire confidence among NHL DFS players in terms of their offensive prowess. Considering all of this the two core pieces of their second line should be a bit off the board yet still form a viable two-man stack with upside.

Defensemen and Goalies

Defensemen

Erik Gustafsson – New York Rangers -$4,400 – He’s been averaging a point per game since assuming a bigger role in the wake of Adam Fox’s injury. So that production is the equivalent of most skaters who cost around $1,000-$1,500 more than he does salary-wise. It’s not rock-bottom pricing but still relatively cheap for the quarterback of the Ranger’s top powerplay unit.

Luke Hughes – New Jersey – $3,700 – Speaking of cheap top power-play exposure we also have the rookie Luke Hughes, who is priced below $4,000. The youngest of the Hughes brothers is currently third among all rookies in terms of points (10 in 16 games). Tonight, the Devils are -162 favorites in a 6.5 projected total matchup and if there was any chalk to be had on this fourteen-game slate, he might be it.

Goalies

Linus Ullmark – Boston – $7,900 – It’s possible he gets blown up but no risk it, no biscuit. In terms of stats, few are better than Ullmark who is sporting a 2.23 GAA and .928 SV%. Perhaps he’s not as dominant so far as he was last season. However, his numbers are still very good, he should see plenty of shots here in an even-money road matchup with the Panthers. He is also under $8,000 salary-wise.

Carter Hart – Philadelphia – $7,100 – This is only if you’re fading the Islander two-man stack listed above and/or creating multiple lines. However, if not using the Islanders, at this price Carter Hart makes a lot of sense. He is dirt cheap and on the whole, the Islanders are not exactly killing it on offense, to say the least. Hart sports a respectable 2.40 GAA and .919 SV% at a price point for which we usually see only scrubs.

11/22 NHL Best Bet

Detroit (+136) – DraftKings – I just don’t think this is as lopsided as the odds suggest, particularly in Detroit where the Wings are 5-3-2 on the season.
