11/16 NHL Favorite Popular Line
St Louis One – “Robert Thomas ($5,800), Pavel Buchnevich ($4,900), Kasperi Kapanen ($3,800)” – Prioritize the first two skaters
St. Louis has been highly productive leading up to this matchup and they are very affordable. They should have received a price bump for tonight as they face the worst team in hockey, the San Jose Sharks. Despite traveling to the West Coast, they are a massive -185 favorite in this 6.5 projected total matchup.
As always with such big slates, I like to run three two-man lines. I would prioritize both Pavel Buchnevich and Robert Thomas in regard to this line. Both of the skaters mentioned have spots on the Blue’s top power-play unit. Thomas has 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists) in 14 games, leading to an average of 12 DraftKings points per game while Buchnevich is averaging 9.6 DraftKings points per game.
11/16 NHL Favorite Contrarian Line
Pittsburgh One – “Sidney Crosby ($8,200), Bryan Rust ($6,600), Jake Guentzel ($7,600)”– prioritize the first two skaters
Since ownership matters less on a larger slate, our “contrarian” pick can be a bit less contrarian tonight. Pittsburgh One has been on an absolute tear as of late. Their peripheral stats back this success as they lead all NHL lines this season in SATF. Well actually don’t just lead all NHL lines, they are absolutely smashing them with the next closest 41 SATF less.
They have a great matchup in a 6.5 projected total game where they are -148 home favorites tonight. While people think of the Devils and their success last year, so far it has not carried over. They have been mediocre at least and on the lower side of the NHL defensively with 55 goals allowed this season.
As I usually do when playing this line on a larger slate, I will pass on Jake Guentzel at his salary and take my chances. Sidney Crosby is still young at heart with 19 points (10 goals, nine assists) in 14 games. Meanwhile, Bryan Rust, who is a good bit cheaper, has 13 points (seven goals, six assists) in 14 games. He has one more goal, albeit six fewer assists than Guentzel who is operating a bit more as a setup man. On this slate, we need goals for our money.
Defensemen and Goalies
Defensemen
Matt Dumba – Arizona -$2,700 – He is a shell of his former self but regaining his prior form is not necessary here. We need salary savings and on the Coyotes, Matt Dumba still sees a ton of minutes. If he is ever going to do something it will be in a soft matchup like this versus the Blue Jackets where the Coyotes are -115 favorites.
Erik Karlsson – Pittsburgh – $6,300 – If spending up Karlsson is not a bad idea. He is on a roll with six straight double-digit point DraftKings outings with four of those involving 20+ points. He must be happy to be freed from the Sharks. He also shares a correlation on the Penguin’s top power-play unit with Sidney Crosby if looking for a unique two-man build or three-man build including Bryan Rust.
Goalies
Adin Hill – Vegas – $8,500 – Assuming he draws the start here, he makes a lot of sense with Vegas a -205 favorite visiting Montreal. This game carries a projected total of six and Hill is putting up stellar numbers. He’ll carry a cool 1.75 GAA and .939 SV% across the border with him.
Semyon Varlamov – New York Islanders – $7,600 – Ilya Sorokin got the start last night, so one less thing to have to watch for. Varlamov has been a monster so far this season with a 2.04 GAA and .940 SV%. Tonight he will start in one of only two games on the eight-game slate with a projected total of six “aside from Vegas/Montreal briefly mentioned just above”.
11/16 NHL Best Bet
Vancouver (+105) – DraftKings – This game features two teams headed in opposite directions; give me the better team as a slight road dog.
