There is a full slate of games on tap today including a plethora of MLB Prop Plays available at Monkey Knife Fight. After correctly predicting Jose Berrios to notch under 5.5 strikeouts earlier this week, I am going to tread in the “Over” props pool for today’s predictions.
Justin Verlander- Houston Astros- Over 8.5 Strikeouts versus Detroit Tigers
This is undoubtedly a wheelbarrow full of strikeouts, but if any hurler in the league is capable of over 8.5 whiffs on any given day it’s Justin Verlander. Especially considering he is opposite the Detroit Tigers and their anemic offense. The Tigers are ranked 28th in the league in home runs and 25th in batting average.
The Tigers offense has also struck out a combined 387 times, which puts them just off the podium with the sixth most whiffs in the majors. Verlander has struck out eight or more batters a total of five times this season including a season-high 11 versus the Mariners.
The Astros should win the game handily with Verlander hitting double digits in Ks. Take the over on this one.
Zack Greinke- Arizona Diamondbacks- Over 5.5 StrikeOuts versus Pittsburgh Pirates
Zack Greinke is averaging 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings so this prop play could even have been a little higher. The veteran hurler has struck out six or more in six of his nine starts thus far in the 2019 campaign.
The Pirates are ranked 25th in the league for fewest strikeouts as a team averaging 8.7 Ks per game this season. They also do not hit for power often either, ranking 29th in the league with only 32 round trippers.
This is a contest where Greinke will exploit the ho-hum offense of the Pirates. Don’t be shipwrecked by the Pirates and take Greinke and the over for the win.
German Marquez- Colorado Rockies- Over 5.5 Strikeouts versus Boston Red Sox
German Marquez was a strikeout machine last season, fanning 230 batters in 2018. This season he is still averaging 9.2 Ks per nine innings and is a lock for the over today versus the Red Sox.
Marquez has struck out six or more in seven of his nine trips to the mound thus far this season. The Red Sox are actually ranked fourth for the fewest strikeouts among Major League teams, with a respectable 7.9 K per nine clip.
Regardless of their propensity to put the ball in play, the line for Marquez at 5.5 is too hard to pass up. Take the over in Beantown.
