Welcome to Zak’s Puck Picks!! I started in Cash with Flash Handicapping Challenge and have been heating up. I am super excited to keep the momentum going and win some serious money with all of you!

A big part of my life is my 3 kids. Each one of them holds a different attribute that I would personally use to aid me in deciding what picks to make. My twins Pork and Ribs and their little brother Bean (not their real names but very appropriate nicknames).

Pork is a doer. He is one to dive into a situation and figure it out as it unfolds, usually with great success. In terms of the puck pick, it will be a gut feeling pick and be backed with some stats to explain the feeling.

Ribs, he likes to observe the situation, take in all the information, and then make an educated decision on what his next step will be. His puck pick will be focused around teams that are on hot streaks, either against a team in a matchup or on a winning streak.

Now Bean may sound cute and innocent, but he is a wild man. Not a lot of thought goes into actions and if there is some thought, its geared towards “how can I push Dad’s buttons”. His puck pick will be a little more on the risky side. There will be reasons why I think we should go this way.

As cook by trade and hockey as a passion since I was 3 years old, let’s get some puck picks in the oven and make some dough shall we?

All odds are referenced from vegasinsider.com. I will play ALL the picks mentioned in these articles.

Puck Record for February (25-22) last night (2-1)

The Flames weren’t the road warriors I thought they would be as they played a stinker last night and made too many mistakes. The Bruins dumped the Canadians 4-1 thanks to a “pasta” hat trick. Thanks to a 49 pick stopping doughnut from Markstrom the Canucks pulled out a 3-0 win even though they were outshot 49-20. The well has dried up in Chicago.

Pork’s Puck Pick- Columbus Blue Jackets -110

Columbus has only lost 3 of their last 10 games, yes one of those was a 2-1 loss to Buffalo in Buffalo, however, it looks to me like Columbus is going to return the favor here tonight. Completely the opposite of Columbus, the Sabres have lost 7 of their last 10 and have been struggling to score a lot of goals. This is not a good scenario when you are facing the second overall team in the league in goals-against per game. I think this will be another close one but when you can’t score and your opponent is 5th in the league in not allowing pucks in the net, I don’t like Buffalo’s chances.

Rib’s Puck Pick- Arizona Coyotes -137

The Coyotes have been playing some inspired hockey as of late and grinding out some gritty performances. Arizona has won 4 of the last 5 meetings between these clubs as referenced by Newsday Sports. Arizona has a 15-12-4 record on the road while Ottawa is sporting a 12-10-6 record at home. The hunt for a playoff spot in the west is close and Arizona is still in the mix. Ottawa should be more concerned with the draft position at this point in the season and trying to figure out the value for the trade deadline. Glad this line is where it is. Get in on it early if you can.

Bean’s Puck Pick- New York Islanders +112

Watching the flames game last night, a stat came up showing the worst GAA between puck stopping tandems in the league. Sitting in 4 was the Nashville Predators. Not only that but the Islanders have been scoring goals at a torrid pace lately. The Islanders have won 4 of their last 5 games whereas Nashville has won 3 of their last 5 and lost 3 of their last 4 at home. The Islanders have been solid defensively and have both puck stoppers playing well. As much as the names down the middle sound great on paper for the Preds, they have not played very well. I do not see this game being won by the home team tonight.

Zak’s Puck Pick- Minnesota Wild -136

I recently said in the discord that I do not understand this Wild team. They continue to baffle my mind. However, you can’t argue with the numbers. They have won six of their last nine home games scoring 32 goals in that stretch while only letting 21 pucks past their tenders. Even though the Wild just traded Jason Zucker to the Penguins, I don’t know they will miss him that much. Alex Galchenyuk could fill his position quite sufficiently. Kevin Fiala has been on fire lately and Matthew Dumba has been solid in the points categories for the Wild. The Rangers have been playing well

Other games I am keeping an eye on;

Edmonton vs Tampa Bay- no McDavid wasn’t in issue for the Oilers against Chicago on Tuesday night. I’m not sure Tampa Bay is deep enough to overcome the injury of Stamkos and Kucharov. Keeping an eye on who starts this one on who starts in goal. Vasalevski had been really good. Smith has been solid for Edmonton as well.

Calgary vs Anaheim – speaking of Mike Smith, he put up a Herculean effort last season to end Calgary’s 29 games losing streak at the Honda Centre. After playing and losing to LA last night, maybe the Honda curse starts a new run tonight.

Washington vs Colorado- this game looks like a fantastic matchup, however, Washington has been on a slide lately and are not looking good in their own zone. The Avalanche has 2 great lines that can bury the puck with some fantastic defense. The -130 for the Avs looks promising

There are a few other matchups I may like, however it depends who the puck stopper is. Stay tuned to the #nhl and # sports betting tabs on Discord, as well as Twitter for any changes or more potential matchups as more news unfolds!

NHL Update

The NHL Playoff picture is beginning to take shape. With about 70% of the season behind us here are your division leaders and their respective Stanley Cup Odds. The Capitals have maintained their points lead over the surging Penguins, while the Lightning has won 8 in a row in an attempt to catch the Bruins. All 4 teams see their odds stay about the same to win the Stanley Cup, while the entire Pacific Division attempts to sort out who will represent them in the playoffs and who will settle for a Wildcard spot.

Before the first puck of the season dropped for the 2019-2020 NHL season we offered Over/Under Point Totals for each team. The Islanders and Blue Jackets are on their way to hitting the over while the Devils and Red Wings are running out of gas to get them over the finish line.
