This article focuses on NHL DFS Picks for 3/12 on DraftKings and FanDuel. Both sites have fairly different scoring formats, particularly with the recent changes on DraftKings. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so we can gain an edge on the field at large. BE SURE to double-check both regular and power play lines at both morning skate and before lock as they can drastically change from the time of publication.

Top Cash Line
Washington One Two Man – Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson
Quite frankly, if you fade Alex Ovechkin in an NHL cash game tonight, it is time to get a new hobby. Facing the atrocious Red Wings, Washington is -400 home favorites which are extremely high for hockey standards. There is not much more to tell you about the Red Wings besides the fact that they are last in the NHL by just about every metric. The problem is that the Capitals have not exactly been lighting it up lately either. The lower lines have been outproducing the top two lines sans Ovechkin. Evgeny Kuznetsov has been practically worthless this season and you couldn’t pay me to play him. I really only have eyes for Ovi, who lit it up last game and should be fed the puck here. However, if you do not want to use Ovechkin as a one-off “which is perfectly fine”, you can add on Tom Wilson who is cheap and should at least grab an assist or two if #8 goes off, between even strength time and time shared on the second power-play unit “Ovi is on both for the Caps”.
Top Value Line
Calgary Two – Mikael Backlund, Andrew Mangiapane, Matthew Tkachuk
The Islanders have been an absolute train wreck down the stretch. They will hope to keep their tenuous hold on the final wild-card spot after losing six straight coming into tonight’s game. Among the biggest factors in this second half, the downturn has been the demise of their once-proud defense, as they are allowing tons of shots and high danger chances. Their goaltending has also gone far south since the beginning of the season. On the flip side, Calgary’s top line has not been getting it done lately outside of Johnny Hockey, so let’s turn to the second line and take a substantial discount. Matthew Tkachuk is the priority skater and the most expensive of the three but I like rolling the full line and getting the maximum savings. The other two skaters do not share time on the first power-play unit but do see time together on the second power-play unit, so fair enough. Calgary is a -145 favorite and should be able to tack on to the Islanders losing streak tonight.

Alex Ovechkin, Auston Matthews, Kevin Fiala – Over 2.5 Points – The daily 2.5 point bet remains at eight straight hits and an overall record of 43/67 as I canceled last night with Nathan MacKinnon out and fears of a late Covid-19 related game suspension after the NBA fallout. Let’s make it nine straight wins tonight by using stars shootout for the main slate. All three of the top-ranked skaters listed above are available as options.
