Introduction to the Turkish Super Lig

This crazy week has taken us from our normal soccer slates revolving around the English Premier League, down south of the border to Mexico, and now back across the world again to Turkey. The Turkish Super Lig does have one automatic qualifying spot in Champion’s League that goes to the champion of the league each season. The representative in the Champion’s League for this year’s edition of the Champion’s League was perennial Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray. They did not fare so well, paired in the group stages against some of the world’s elite teams in Paris St. Germain “PSG” and Real Madrid.

Nevertheless, currently at the top of the Turkish Table we have Trabzonspor and Istanbul Basaksehir tied on points with Trabzonspor ahead on goal difference. Istanbul Basaksehir is still alive in the Europa League competition, as well, so playing on two different fronts right now.

In full, Qualification for European competitions is as follows: champions qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, runners-up qualify for the second qualifying round of the Champions League, third place qualifies for the third qualifying round of the Europa League, and fourth place qualifies for the second qualifying round of the same competition. A fifth spot is given to the winner of the Turkish Cup, who qualify for the play-off round of the Europa League.

The Bottom Half

On the flip side of the table, every season the typical standard three teams are relegated down to the Turkish 2nd Division, TFF 1 Lig., with three teams promoted up. Getting to the teams playing tomorrow, Rizespor currently sits sixteenth in the eighteen team table so if the season ended today they would be relegated. The other team, Goztepe, currently sits eighth in the eighteen team table and would need to do some serious work to grab one of the tour four spots as needed to qualify for other competitions.

3/17 Turkish Super League Showdown Main Slate

Caykur Rizespor (+325) at Goztepe (-120) – Under 2.5 Goals (-135)

Caykur Rizespor

League minnows Caykur Rizespor come in to this match in poor form. They have failed to win in the Turkish Super Lig since January 20th. Rizespor will be traveling cross country to Goztepe as big road underdogs. They have allowed two goals in five of their last six games. This includes a 5-2 smashing that came at the hands of table leading Trabzonspor.

Goztepe

Goztepe is the home favorite and expected to win here despite not having scored over their last three league games. This stretch included a 3-0 beatdown by second in the table Istanbul Basaksehir and an embarrassing 1-0 loss at bottom of the table Kayserispor. It goes without saying, this one should be low scoring.

The Gameplan

Since we have a low total game here, it only makes sense more than ever to target set pieces. Despite his team’s poor form Fernando Boldrin has been matchup proof, regularly sending in a number of crosses, leading to a pretty consistent amount of shots created. On the opposite side, Serdar Gurler seems like his counterpart, albeit not quite as strong or consistent. Nevertheless, they should be both be in your lineup if in. Gurler is questionable so that is a situation to watch and could open up additional value.
