Welcome to the Week 2 edition of The Wire Report for the 2021 NFL season. In this article I’ll be highlighting some of the top players that should still be available in your season long leagues.
With the Week 1 now a wrap we have a some guys that are still under owned respective to their new roles/old roles. I’ll walk you through some guys that should be on your team if they are on the waiver wire.
Below are my top waiver wire targets:
Elijah Mitchell – Running Back – San Francisco 49ers (3.8% rostered in ESPN Leagues)
With Mostert on the shelf for the next couple of months it appears that Mitchell will be “the guy”. Mitchell made the most of his shot this weekend as he finished with 104 yards on 19 carries.
His 19 carries were about 70% of the team’s rushes so we should expect that until his performance regresses he’ll be the guy getting the majority of the carries. Grab Mitchell if you can because he’ll be extremely productive the next few weeks.
Tim Patrick – Wide Receiver – Denver Broncos (.07% rostered in ESPN Leagues)
If we take Jeudy out of the equation, Patrick had the 2nd most targets this past week against the Giants. With Jeudy now out of the equation for a few weeks we should see some of his targets filter to Patrick.
Patrick had 4 targets this past weekend and caught all 4 for 39 yards. This week he gets to take on a Jaguars team that gave up 291 passing yards. Look for Patrick to have a solid game this week and if he’s available in your league, which he is in 99% of the ESPN Leagues, you should grab him. Especially if you’re a full point PPR.
Cole Kmet – Tight End – Chicago Bears (24.9% rostered in ESPN Leagues)
Only 7 other tight ends had more targets than Kmet this past week. Kmet finished week 1 with 5 receptions and 7 targets, totaling 42 yards. This was against a solid Rams defense. Up on the schedule for the Bears this week is a much easier match up against Bengals.
Nelson Agholor – Wide Receiver – New England Patriots (32.3% rostered in ESPN Leagues)
Agholor was tied for the second most targets on the Patriots this weekend. Only Meyers had more targets. Boy did Agholor make the most of his 7 targets as he had 5 receptions for 72 yards and 1 touchdown.
Agholor clicked pretty quickly with rookie Mac Jones and my hope is that this pair continues to play well together. Agholor is still available in more than 67% of leagues on ESPN and if he is in your league, you should consider grabbing him.
Mark Ingram – Running Back – Houston Texans (13.3% Rostered in ESPN Leagues)
It’s only one week worth of data, but Ingram saw around 64% of the carries for the Texans this past weekend. While he only averaged a little more than 3 yards per carry, the 26 carries may be enough to overcome the breakaway speed.
If he continues to get this volume we’ll want to have him on our roster. He’s still available in most leagues and worth picking up for you bench. If the volume is there going forward, he’s also going to be worth starting on a weekly basis. Volume = Opportunity
Jameis Winston – Quarterback – New Orleans Saints (30.1% rostered in ESPN Leagues)
Can we expect another 5 touchdown passes this week against the Panthers? Doubtful. But Winston showed some growth in his first game with Saints. His decision making was better and he was pretty accurate with his passing as he completed 14 of 20 passes.
With Winston we’re also going to get a QB that will give us some rushing yards as he finished with 37 yards on 6 attempts. If your QB struggled this past week or got hurt like Fitzpatrick, you could do a whole lot worse than Winston. Grab him while you can.
