Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Aces and Bases, where I’ll be going through the top MLB DFS Aces and Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel.
Tonight we have a nice-sized 12-game slate of MLB DFS to navigate through. With that many teams on the board tonight, it should give us plenty of pitching options and plenty of pitchers to attack.
Let’s dig in and see if we can find some stacks to use today!
MLB DFS Aces – Main
Shane Bieber vs. Kansas City Royals
Shane Bieber is coming off a stretch of 2 games that saw him strikeout a combined 20 hitters over the course of 14 innings. In those games, he faced decent lineups in the Orioles and the Mariners. Tonight, Bieber gets a much easier task against a Royals lineup that isn’t all that impressive. If we look at their projected lineup tonight, they have just a .282 wOBA vs. righties over the last month and a 24% K rate.
Bieber should be able to navigate his way through this lineup with relative ease. Bieber is also coming into this one pitching some of his best baseball of the season. He’s pitched to just a 1.83 ERA over the last month and has a chase rate of nearly 32%. I’ll be locking him into my SP1 spot tonight.
Kyle Wright vs. Oakland Athletics
As a Mets fan, I hope I get this pick wrong. But this is a solid spot for Kyle Wright to continue his excellent form. Over his last 4 starts, Wright hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs and has now gone back-to-back games without allowing a single run. He’s also gone deep in both of those games, throwing 7 innings in each of them.
While he has limited K upside with just a 26% K rate over the last month, the matchup against the A’s is great as they won’t be able to do much damage vs. him. They’ve also been striking out a healthy amount vs. righties as the projected lineup tonight has a 28% K rate vs. righties which does give him a bit of a bump from a K perspective. Wright makes for a solid SP2 tonight.
Gerrit Cole vs. Minnesota Twins
I doubt I’ll be going here tonight, but you have to respect the upside of Gerrit Cole, even against a solid lineup like the Twins. He’s had some challenges of late, but few have the big-game upside as Cole has. He has multiple games this season in double-digit strikeouts. Thanks to his 4 strikeout game vs. the Angels last week, his K rate over the last month is a bit suppressed at just 26.8%.
Even though the K’s have been down, he’s been doing a solid job limiting damage as he’s pitched to a 2.16 ERA over the last month and has just a 26% hard-hit rate against. Again, probably not going here tonight and will be more than likely locking in Bieber and Wright, but the Yankees need a big game out of Cole and they will probably get it.
MLB DFS Stacks – Main
Cleveland Guardians vs. Kris Bubic
Unlike his teammate Daniel Lynch who I think has future upside, southpaw Kris Bubic profiles to me as a journeyman back end of the rotation type of pitcher. He’s going to have his ups and he’s going to have his downs. Tonight will be one of the nights that he has his downs. I preach this all the time, but we need to attack pitchers that pitch to contact and Bubic is that type of pitcher.
Over the last month, Bubic has just a 14% K rate and has given up an 85% contact rate. It doesn’t always pan out, but putting the ball in play is a must and the Guardians will put a ton of balls in play tonight. Good things happen when the ball is in play. Also over the last month, both sides of the plate have wOBA’s over .400 vs. him and hard-hit rates over 45%. We do not need to shy away from lefties in this matchup.
Core: My Guardians’ MLB DFS core tonight will be Jose Ramirez, Oscar Gonzalez, and Andres Gimenez. Gimenez is in a super sneaky spot today. Bubic has given up .640 slugging % vs. lefties this season and a .467 wOBA. If we look at Gimenez, he’s actually been better against lefties this season with an average of .307. Over the last month, he’s crushed lefties with a .222 ISO and a .487 wOBA.
Oscar Gonzalez has also done well against lefties over the last month, with a .360 wOBA and a hard-hit rate of 47%. He’s also coming into this one hot as he has 5 hits over his last 5 games, including a 2-hit game last night with a double and 2 RBI. At just $3.1k on DK tonight, he’ll be a core to me and also a solid value piece.
Secondary Pieces: After my core, I’m also going to have some interest in Amed Rosario, Owen Miller, and Luke Maile. None of these guys are going to be a priority for me at all, but if they fit, I’ll look to get them in there. My favorite of the three will be Rosario. While he only has 4 hits in his last 25 AB, he’s been a bit unlucky as he’s sporting a .190 BABIP. At some point, those balls will find a gap and against a contact pitcher like Bubic on the hill, there’s a solid chance it happens tonight.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Eduardo Rodriguez
Can lightning strike twice for the Angels? With a matchup vs. another southpaw, there’s a solid chance it happens. I don’t think they put up another 10 spot as they did, but the Angels are in a great spot to continue what they did last night. The Tigers big free-agent acquisition has essentially been a bust. He was away from the team for the majority of the year, and when he pitched, he hasn’t pitched all that well.
He got blasted in his last outing vs. the Mariners, giving up 5 ER in just 4 innings of work. Since returning to the rotation in mid-august, Rodriguez has been giving up just a ton of contact nearly 91%. He’s all but forgotten how to strike people out. His walks are also up, with a BB/9 of close to 5 since his return. If the Angels can be patient tonight, they’ll put up another big number.
Core: Similar to last night, I’m starting my Angels stack with Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and Luis Rengifo. This Mike Trout guy is heating up with homers in back-to-back games. With a matchup vs. Rodriguez, there’s a solid chance he can make it three in a row.
Now on to Ohtani. He’s in a glorious matchup tonight. Rodriguez is giving up a .610 slugging % to lefties this season, and trend that has been consistent throughout his career. Ohtani has also been crushing lefties over the last month, with a .437 wOBA and a .357 ISO. He’s coming off a game that saw him homer twice. I don’t know if we get a 100% replication of that, but he’s in line to have a solid game tonight. I was on Rengifo last night and he rewarded us with 23 DK points. He’s in just as good of a matchup tonight. Rengifo has been great vs. lefties over the last month, with a .387 wOBA and a .297 ISO. At just $3.9k, he’s very affordable and in line to really produce.
Secondary: My complimentary pieces for the Angels tonight will be Andrew Velazquez, David Fletcher, and Taylor Ward. Ward had a productive game last night with a hit, a run, and 2 RBI. My hope is that he’s turning a corner and again, we’re getting someone in a platoon advantage that is just $3.2k tonight on DK and was regularly in the $5k range earlier this season. If we can get close to what he was earlier in the year, he’ll easily pay off his salary tonight.
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chad Kuhl
We’ll need a piece of Coors tonight with our MLB DFS stacks and I have a strong preference for the Brewers side. Chad Kuhl is someone that can be exploited, and he’ll be exploited tonight vs. a Brewers team that is desperate for wins right now. Kuhl is currently in a stretch of pitching that has seen him give up at least 3 ER in 8 consecutive starts, dating all the way back to early July.
Kuhl is pretty weak against both sides of the plate, giving up a slugging % of at least .480 to both sides and also wOBA’s over .350. This is a Brewers lineup that even though they are currently struggling, can bust out at any time with the amount of talent they have in that lineup.
Core: I’m going to start my Brewers stack with Hunter Renfroe, Rowdy Tellez, and Kolten Wong. These are the 3 bats in this Brewers lineup that have hit for the most power vs. righties this season. Renfroe is up to a .513 slugging % vs. them this season and has slugged 18 homers off of righties this season. Considering the matchup and environment, $4.5k is an extremely fair price to pay for him on DK tonight. Tellez has also shown immense power this season vs. righties, with 24 bombs against them. He’s also not priced up tonight at just $4.2k on DK.
Secondary Pieces: Other pieces I’ll like here will be Christian Yelich, Willy Adames, and my favorite of the bunch, Jace Peterson. If you know me, you know I love using Peterson when he’s facing an average to below average righty. He’ll be facing one tonight. Over the last month, he’s been good against righties with a .374 wOBA. He’s just $3.3k on DK and could come up clutch for us tonight.
MLB DFS Summary
The Giants currently don’t have a starter posted. Depending on who they throw out, the Dodgers very well could make it into my top 3 stacks. I also like the Tigers vs. Mike Mayers tonight.
