Between the Benches we go tonight, for a nice little three game slate. This one is already shaping up to be very, very interesting, and tonight feels like ALL risk. Every goalie on the slate is risky, and of the three games, one of them feels like a true coin flip. More to come on that. Feel free to correlate your goalies with your stacks, as tonight is not a night to go all in on one goalie. Make sure you spread your exposure around. In fact, if you love a skating lineup you made, it might make sense to duplicate it and change the goalie. Good luck!
Goalies
Jordan Binnington – St. Louis Blues: Of the six teams on this slate, the Blues are surrendering the least amount of goals against, high danger chances, and high dangers goals against. While this is due in large part to the goaltending of Binnington, it certainly helps that he has a decent defense in front of him. This is gutsy play against Edmonton, but the numbers suggest that he should be a great play for GPPs tonight. Edmonton fires a ton of shots, so the upside is there. We just need to hope he doesn’t collapse.
Jaroslav Halak – New York Rangers: The Rangers hosted Colorado last night, and Shesterkin got the nod in net, which means that it is likely that we see Halak tonight. Make sure you keep up on the news through the day, and final confirmation may not get to us until warmups. Halak’s numbers are pretty ugly to start the season, but facing the Islanders, it feels like he could steal one. The Rangers are a better team overall than the Isles, so this is strictly playing for a win. He will likely give up 2 or 3 tonight.
High Risk Goalie Pick – Ilya Sorokin – New York Islanders: On the other side of the Rangers/Isles game, you have Sorokin, who will see a ton of shots. The upside should be there, and a save bonus should be in his future tonight. However, the Rangers have been very good to start the year, so this one feels like the most risk on the slate.
Others to Consider: Jack Campbell (EDM)
Lines to Build Around
These NHL DFS lines are considered top plays for the night and can be considered the focal point of your builds. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).
Tampa Bay Lightning Power Play – Brayden Point/Steven Stamkos/Nikita Kucherov/Vladislav Namestnikov/Victor Hedman: All of the numbers point to the Lightning being the play of the night tonight. Ranked 10th in the league on the power play, they get to face a PK that is ranked 30th. Along with that, the Ducks are giving up a massive 4.5 goals against per game, as well as 2.30 high danger goals per 60. Throw in that Gibson has terrible numbers, and this chalky unit will be the play of the night for many of the field. Because they will be popular, get a little creative here and go something like Point or Stamkos with Namestnikov and Hedman. You can also run Kuch/Namestnikov/Hedman. Those angles will make you just different enough on a short slate.
New York Rangers 2 – Vincent Trocheck/Artemi Panarin/Alexis Lafreniere: The second line for the Rangers has been a force all year, and generally underpriced. You can get access to a solid scoring team that has upside tonight by playing this trio. As mentioned above, Halak’s numbers are terrible so far, so this line is in a prime spot to do some damage, so long as they can solve the defense-first Islanders.
High Risk Lines
These are NHL DFS plays that carry significantly more risk, but could pay off at low ownership. They will be listed by position in the following order: Center/Winger/Winger/Correlating Defenseman (if applicable).
Anaheim Ducks 1 – Trevor Zegras/Troy Terry/Adam Henrique/John Klingberg: As much as the Ducks have been bad on defense, this line has not been that bad on offense. They have a decent chance tonight to be a surprise, as they face Elliott and the Lightning on the back end of a back-to-back. If playing just a trio here, drop Henrique and run Terry/Zegras/Klingberg, and you get a power play look.
New York Rangers Power Play – Vincent Trocheck/Mika Zibanejad/Artemi Panarin/Chris Kreider/Adam Fox: Listing the Rangers’ power play unit under high risk feels weird. However, the numbers and the Islanders’ style both suggest that this unit could be high risk tonight. They are a hefty price tag, and they are facing and Islander PK that is ranked in the top 10 of the league so far this year.
St. Louis Blues 3 – Logan Brown/Josh Leivo/Jake Neighbours: This is where we start to get a little off-the-wall. Based on the line matching tendencies of the Blues, this line should match up against the second and third lines of the Oilers, which puts them in an interesting spot. We can get some value here, and be very different.
