3/15 LIGA MX Main Slate

Necaxa (+323) at Santos Laguna (-135) – Under 3 Goals (-140)

Necaxa

Just like the last two nights, there is no need to target a bunch of players from a large road underdog. For $5,300, Jairo Gonzalez is interesting as a relatively active wing defender. He seems to grab a handful of crosses, a few shots assisted per game, so you could do worse. Other than that as you can see from the ranks below, there is not a lot to like here.

Santos Laguna

Brian Lozano is the top play on the 3/15 LIGA MX slate bar none. His team is favored at home and he has shown a consistently high floor. Particularly in cash games, let the people who fade him pay the rake. His worst game this season was 10.5 points and he has averaged 20.6 despite only scoring two goals and one assist over nine games. His last game he pumped out fifteen crosses and had five shots assisted so some monster stuff. He is expensive but with little else to pay up for he will be monster chalk so just eat it.

Eduardo Aguirre is only $5,500 and projected to start as a forward for the slate’s biggest favorite so he makes sense as a forward play in both cash and tournament games.

Outside of them, another play I like is Carlos Orrantia for $4,400. He is listed as a defender so clean sheet eligible but it looks like he is playing up in the attack on the wing. He busted the last match but had 12.2 and 14.5 DraftKings points in the two proceeding games, which would be really nice value at that price. This is clearly a good spot for these Laguna guys at home as decent favorites. Stacking is certainly in play here as well given the small slate.

For additional value, someone like Jose Van Rankin playing on the wing for $4,200 isn’t bad if you need a punt. When the lineups come out we will have to see the exact formation and what other defender is out on the side.

As the biggest favorite on the slate, Jonathan Orozco makes sense as the cash goaltender. The $5,500 price is not too much higher than goalies who give us more uncertainty in terms of their situation.

Cruz Azul (+170) at Club America (+155) – Under 2.5 Goals (-125)

Cruz Azul

This is the biggest matchup on the slate as this is like the Real Madrid vs Barcelona or Red Sox vs Yankees of Mexican Soccer. These are the two clubs with the biggest followings and they don’t get along.

Cruz Azul currently sits second in the Liga MX Table with Club America in third. Striker Jonathan Rodriguez has been in extremely strong form lately with eight goals and an assist over nine games this season. He might be able to add to that tally here despite a tough road assignment.

Midfielder Elias Hernandez is the secondary scoring option with four goals and three assists over the nine games this season. However, the fact that he is not forward eligible unlike Rodriguez is sort of a downgrade, if choosing between the two. Because both need goals to hit value, I consider them more tournament options although you could make the argument for Rodriguez as cash forward if you can fit him in. The two-man stack, as well as one-offs, are both in play for tournaments.

Beyond them, Roberto Alvarado is coming off a monster two-goal, one assist game for $5,800. He was not doing much before that but might make for a tournament pivot off more popular cash forward in that range like Eduardo Aguirre or Giovani Dos Santos “more below”.

Club America

Club America will play host for this big game with their rival. Federico Vinas is fairly cheap at $6,900 and has scored three goals in four appearances. Despite a tough matchup, based on that he should cost a little more, so I like him for both cash and tournaments.

Midfielder Richard Sanchez is also another solid play at $7,400. He is not racking up numbers on the level Logano is and maybe slightly overpriced. However, he is active enough that he has had some big games despite only registering three assists and no goals over his nine games this season.

If Giovani Dos Santos returns, he and Leo Suarez make for interesting lower owned plays at $5,100 and $5,300. They are forward eligible and cheap enough to make for a cash plays, albeit secondary scoring options in this offense.

Goaltender Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa has been the goaltender for the Mexican National Team for forever and is a living legend south of the border. It looks like he has had two consecutive off games after a relatively strong season. However, he can always have a big night. Just ask the US Men’s soccer team. I think he is not the top option on this slate, however, as this game is essentially a pick-em and Cruz Azul has some solid scoring threats.
