Valhalla- “hall of the fallen” is a mythical Norse palace where all the fallen war heroes go to spend time with Odin before the “Ragnarock” or doomsday wars. Whenever a hero would fall on the battlefield they would say Odin needed him to fill his ranks of warriors for the doomsday battles. When Bryson releases his “kraken” will Scottie or Rory or LIV stand up to the challenge? We will find out this Thursday in Kentucky. The PGA Ownership Projections are dedicated to making you a smarter and wealthier DFS player.

Win Daily Sports’ golf team works tirelessly to bring you the best intel. The PGA Ownership Projections allow you to pivot to lower owned players, find those hidden leverage gems and drive your teams to the top of multiple formats.

Courses and Horses

Think length when you think of this course. Accurate drivers and approach shots from 200 + are key metrics. Team no putt may be in play as well. The greens are smaller but offer no challenges except speed. Some of the players we like are Scottie, Rory, Rahm, Koepka, Dechambeau, Niemann, Hatton, An, Conners, Straka, K Bradley, Kitayama, Mitchell and J Smith

***** Parting Shots *****

A doctor, a lawyer and a Win Daily DFS member are playing 18 holes at their local course and find they’re stuck behind a really slow foursome. After taking an hour and a half to get through just three holes, they call a club steward over and ask what the hold up is about.

“Well sirs,” says the steward, “these guys are all firefighters, and they were all blinded in a terrible accident at the orphanage while they were rescuing the children from the fire. The club committee voted to let them play here once a week for free. We’re sorry for the inconvenience but I’m sure you understand it’s the least our community can do for a group of heroes.”

“I’m sure we could do more” says the doctor. “There are all sorts of pioneering work being done about sight restoration!” I’ll research this and see if there’s anything that can be done.”

The lawyer says,” those procedures could be costly.” “These firefighters may be entitled to more compensation.” I’ll take the case pro bono and when we win I’ll give 100% to those brave men!”

The Win Daily DFS member says, “Since they’re all blind, why don’t you just let them play at night?”

As always, I hope to be with you on Sunday afternoon, in the money. You can also come and hang out in the Win Daily Sports Discord Chat to talk it out with everyone before the lock!

Happy Hump Day!  We’re halfway through the week.  Tonight, I’ll be focused on the 7-game slate of MLB DFS that starts at 7 PM EST.  This is a slate that truly lacks an ace.  The pitcher with the highest K rate gets a nasty matchup against one of the hottest offenses in the game in the Yankees.  This slate does however give us plenty of options for offense.

Let’s Dig in and make some money!

MLB DFS Aces – Main

Tanner Houck ($9.1k on DK) vs. Tampa Bay Rays

I said pitching was bad and I meant it.  Nothing against Tanner Houck as he’s pitched fairly well this season, but he’s not an ace and when he’s one of the top pitchers on the slate, it says something about the slate.  Overall, Houck has been really good this season.  Over the last month, Houck owns a 2.34 ERA and a 2.81 xFIP.  He also owns a 23% K rate which is respectable.

He’ll be facing a Rays team that for the most part, has been disappointing this season.  Against righties, they have just a .675 OPS and a .128 ISO.  They are beatable, and they should be beaten by Tanner Houck tonight.  I expect Houck to be one of the more popular pitchers tonight.

Charlie Morton ($8.4k on DK) vs. Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs have been struggling offensively over the last week and until they right the ship, they’re a team that we should be attacking with pitchers.  Over the last week, they’ve scored just 21 runs and have a 28% K rate.  Against righties this season, they’ve also struggled as they have a .678 OPS and a .144 ISO.  We’ll attack them with the veteran righty, Charlie Morton.

The crafty 40-year-old continues to get hitters out.  His ERA on the year sits at just 3.14 and his xFIP isn’t much higher.  The one knock on him is that his K/9 is down about 2 this season compared to the last couple of years.  At $8.4k though we don’t’ really need a pitcher with a 30% K rate.  As long as he can continue to get his 5-7 K’s tonight, he’ll more than pay off his salary.

Other pitchers who will be in my pool today will be Taj Bradley vs. Boston, Jon Gray vs. Cleveland, and Pablo Lopez vs. the Yankees.

MLB DFS Stacks – Main

Texas Rangers vs. Carlos Carrasco

The last few years have been a struggle for Carlos Carrasco.  He’s had an ERA over 5 in 3 of the last 4 seasons, with 2 of those seasons being over 6.00.  At 37, we can’t expect him to all of a sudden turn it around as Father Time just isn’t on his side anymore.  Things have gotten even worse for him over the last few games as he’s given up at least 5 runs in 3 of his last 4 starts.

He’s been especially susceptible to the long ball over the last month as he’s given up 7 of them.  Against a strong Rangers lineup, he’s almost certain to give up even more homers tonight.  I’m not going to be overly concerned about splits here as Carrasco has really struggled against both sides of the plate this season.

Core Bats: Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Nathaniel Lowe

Secondary Bats: Adolis Garcia, Jonah Heim

Value Bats: Ezequial Duran, Leody Taveras

Oakland Athletics vs. Framber Valdez

I think this is a sneaky spot for the A’s tonight.  I’ve never been a huge fan of Framber Valdez and he’s showing little this season to change my mind.  While the ERA is very respectable this season at 3.64, the advance metrics for him are not.  Over the last month, Valdez has been getting hit extremely hard.  His hard-hit rate over the last month is nearly 44%.  No one on this slate is remotely close to that.

Hitters have an average exit velocity of 94 MPH against him.  That’s also an extremely high number.  While the contact rate against him is only 75%, when hitters make contact against him they are crushing him.  Against a surprisingly competent lineup in the A’s, that could spell trouble for him.  I’m going to favor the righties here as they hit for more power against Valdez.

Core Bats: Brent Rooker, Zack Gelof

Secondary Bats: Esteury Ruiz

Value Bats: Abraham Toro, Shea Langeliers, Max Schuemann

Other stacks I like tonight will be the Astros vs. Aaron Brooks, Braves vs. Javiar Assad, and Angels vs. Lance Lynn.

Well, I may have a small part of premonition on the PGA Tour last week in our preview of the Wells Fargo Championship. I mentioned that there may be some hope for punters trying to find some value with no Scottie Scheffler in the field and Ludvig Aberg WD with knee injury concerns. I went on to say that it probably meant Rory McIlroy would win. We duly struck a blow for punters, becoming yet another short-priced favourite to win on the PGA Tour. There, I will fess up, I jinxed it. Sorry, all.

True to form, I mentioned an interesting PGA stat I found in the lead-up to the Wells Fargo Championship preview. Just two winners had sat outside the Top 31 for ball speed when they won at Quail Hollow. It may be frustrating to see another short-priced winner, but it was reassuring to see our analysis played true in that regard.

But, let’s get honest. It has been a dire season for nearly all golf punters. It has been either very short-priced favourites or extreme long-shots taking out most tournaments for the season. So often, golf betting value is found in the 50/1 to 100/1 range. There have been just 4 such winners on the PGA Tour this year. Fortunately, finding Pavon at 125/1 at the Farmers Insurance Open has saved us from complete decimation. However, we stick to the process with the knowledge that when it comes to golf analysis following the numbers will eventually lead to a positive result over the long run.

Valhalla Golf Club Course Analysis

Valhalla plays host to our PGA Championship preview

Speaking of Rory McIlroy, the PGA Championship returns to Valhalla Golf Club, a course we last had the chance to preview some 10 years ago. That was the venue of Rory’s last major victory, and he arrives in a rich vein of form off the back of consecutive victories. Included in that was the win at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship, where Quail Hollow should play analogous to Valhalla.

This feels like another venue that will do what it says on the tin. Valhalla, designed by Jack Nicklaus and played in the state of Kentucky, is an epic 7,609 yards par 71. Quail Hollow is also a par 71 and a mere 51 yards shorter. Both also feature a driveable par 4 and reasonably narrow fairways.

That is a hallmark of Nicklaus-designed golf courses. He tests every element of a player’s game. So, if pulling driver, you will be rewarded with extra distance if you keep the ball in-play. However, fairways narrow significantly at landing areas with thick hay and fairway bunkers awaiting any tee shot that falls too astray.

Greens are a little smaller than Quail Hollow and are bentgrass. They will be firm and fast, typical of a PGA Championship venue. Par will often be a very good score and see you gaining strokes on the field.

Finally, we have a rare emergence of zoysiagrass fairways. This grass type features rarely on the PGA Tour. We see this at regular stops at TPC Craig Ranch, TPC Southwind, and East Lake Golf Club. This polarizing grass has a higher rate of water retention. Some players comment that it feels like hitting the ball off a tee. Others complain that it can produce flyers, with the grass getting caught between the ball and club face and traveling further than expected.

Valhalla Course Comps

As mentioned, this is a rare circumstance where last week’s tournament provides not only some guidance of recent form but a course that should demand similar skills from our golfers in this PGA Championship preview.

Quail Hollow matches in a large number of metrics, from overall performance off the tee, and similar approach metrics as expected this week where any shots over 175 yards will see a disproportionate weighting compared to other PGA Tour venues.

Given some of the weather to be discussed shortly, I think that the 2022 PGA Championship could be a reasonable guide to this week. Oak Hill also is far from the worst guide to consider.

I have also included some weighting in my model to recent zoysiagrass performances. Although the venues often produce lower-scoring tournaments, we can look into the approach numbers at these PGA Tour stops to identify players who may prefer this grass type.

PGA Championship Weather Preview

Weather certainly looks like it could play a role in this year’s PGA Championship preview. Thursday currently looks to be quite calm, although early morning fog may see play delayed by an hour or two if heavy. Particularly, Thursday morning looks to be quite still and should provide optimal scoring conditions with the course still a little moist from rain earlier in the week.

Friday afternoon, we could see some more volatile weather arrive. There is a chance of thunderstorms from 1pm and winds will increase, gusting up to 25-30mph. There is always the risk with thunderstorms that play is delayed. This can cause any weather edge to flip 180°.

However, in this instance, forecasts have Saturday being very windy and high gusts all day. Thos on Friday PM would only find themselves in more volatile winds should they need to finish round 2 on Saturday morning.

That leads me to believe there should be a weather edge for tee-times from Thursday PM/Friday AM for the first two rounds. That always comes with the caveat that weather forecasts can flip quickly, especially when there is the looming chance of thunderstorms.

Ensure you have signed up for WinDaily Premium to access all our final weather decisions closer to tee time. Information is available right up until play starts to provide you with any identifiable weather edge that can be gleaned. This is particularly for DFS, with players priced under $7,500 most affected by any weather edge. You will find this information and more in the WinDaily Premium Discord here.
