We are right back into it this week as we preview the RBC Heritage! The PGA Tour really have no option but to make this a signature event. The tournament has a lot of legacy behind it. The tournament has been played the week after The Masters for the past 40 years. Arnold Palmer was the inaugural champion here, with co-designed Jack Nicklaus winning here a few years later. It is a relaxing change of pace from Augusta National which the players enjoy. Further, the PGA Tour get to strike while the iron is hot and attempt to capitalise on new fans who joined to watch The Masters. Finally, RBC is one of the biggest sponsors of the PGA Tour and support multiple events. All this leads to a situation where we can have no Masters hangover and have to dive into another signature event preview at the RBC Heritage.

In regard to The Masters, the phrase I have seen most often this week to describe Scottie Scheffler’s emphatic victory is “inevitable”. That does a disservice to his efforts and achievement. There were four golfers tied for the lead with 10 holes to go. As they say, The Masters doesn’t really start until the last 9 holes on Sunday. Scheffler simply slammed the door shut on everyone. A run of 5-under across 9 holes under those circumstances was incredibly impressive. So, there is one word I would use to describe his performance. It was clinical.

Zalatoris was our closest charge last week, racking up another Top 10 at Augusta National. 250/1 selection Ryan Fox was also just 2 shots off the lead Saturday, before fading after perhaps surprisingly finding himself in contention.

Harbour Town Course Analysis

Certainly, any time you can take on a short-priced favourite you will be able to find some value further down the board. Other than the fact that Scottie Scheffler is on constant baby-watch, there may be other reasons to take on the best player in golf right now. And aiding our RBC Heritage preview this week is this golf course.

This niggly test is polar opposite to Augusta National in nearly every way. Long hitters have often found success at The Masters, with ample space off the tee and driver used often. Greens are large, although the actual target area is reduced substantially given the undulating greens and multiple tiers.

Harbour Town is, instead, a fiddly test. Accuracy off the tee is paramount. This goes beyond finding the fairway to being on the right side of the fairway. Hanging trees can often impede players on approach, so finding the right angle is imperative for accessing these very small greens. They average just 3,700 sq ft in size.

Harbour Town Golf Links hosts our preview of the RBC Heritage

Those small greens also sees a large uptick in ATG performance as a predictive factor. It is inevitable that greens will be missed around this golf course. Taking a look at the last two champions, Matt Fitzpatrick and Jordan Spieth (who was also runner-up in 2023), they represent two of the best players on Tour with their short-game creativity.

Finally, there is an interesting dispersion of approach shots at Harbour Town. Given players being forced to play from similar spots, we see just one predicted approach shot from 50-100 yards and 2 shots from 200+ yards. Consequently, there is a large uptick in approach from 150-200 yards (9 shots predicted) and 100-150 yards (6 shots). This is some of the largest disparity we see on the PGA Tour all year.

Harbour Town Course Comps

Pete Dye’s iconic course designs feature frequently on the tour. This provides a multitude of options to consider in your RBC Heritage preview. But, of those, TPC River Highlands (Travelers Championship) and Austin Country Club (WGC Matchplay) provide short courses where accuracy and scrambling are essential.

TPC Sawgrass (The Players) is worthy of consideration, although it doesn’t quite match the required approach numbers strong performances there are noted. Sedgefield Country Club maintains links as a positional course where shorter drivers can thrive but driving accuracy is at a premium. Sedgefield is also highly correlated to TPC Sawgrass, adding to those ties for your RBC Heritage preview.

The Sea Island courses (RSM Classic) have strong correlating connections to here. It is another tree-lined coastal course, meaning driving accuracy and approach are key. Waialae Country Club (Sony Open) tells a similar tale.

RBC Heritage Weather Preview

There is little to note in the weather this week. Firstly, the condensed 69 man field means that all players will be on the course at relatively similar times. This reduces the opportunity for any tangible weather advantage to develop which is worthy of actioning.

Secondly, the weather itself looks pretty benign. The course is sheltered with trees for the most part, with only a few holes truly exposed to the coastline. Winds look to hover at a maximum of mid-teens for gusts. There is a small chance of thunderstorms on both Friday and Saturday. Again, the small field should ensure that even if play is disrupted they should be able to get the tournament complete in good time.

We’re continuing the Play-Ins tonight with a two-game NBA DFS slate. We get the Miami Heat versus the Philadelphia 76ers and the Atlanta Hawks versus the Chicago Bulls. I’ll go over my core plays alongside my favorite value targets. To finish the article, I’ll drop my two favorite bets for tonight’s action while using the brand-new Propbettor tool!

NBA DFS – Core Plays

Trae Young $9,200 – 49.14 DK Points – 5.33 Value Rating

Trae Young may be in a difficult position tonight facing the Chicago Bulls but his ownership is making me want him more. He is projected between 20-22% ownership on a two-game slate. Young is also the third-highest projected player as he’s right behind Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid is leading the pack overall. He has only played three games since returning from injury and finally notched over 30 minutes in the season’s final game. He has been able to record double-digit points and with the team’s playoff hopes on the line, I’m locking him in.

Make sure you are signed up for our premium plan so you can stay up-to-date in Discord with any last-minute NBA news and any core changes. Get Premium access to all content using this link. Find me in Discord under the name “xfreshie” and tag me with any questions.

Javonte Green $5,000 – 32.18 DK Points – 6.44 Value Rating

Javonte Green comes in as the highest-rated value player of the game. While his price tag isn’t the huge discount we would look for, he brings good upside. Atlanta has struggled versus forwards as they allow them to average 24.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. This gives Green a good upside as he has averaged nearly 30 minutes per game in his last five. In those games, he has averaged 14 points and 8.6 rebounds. There is a double-double bonus upside also in play if Javonte Green sees some solid court time.

Tyler Herro $7,500 – 40.02 DK points – 5.34 Value Rating

Tyler Herro has been logging some minutes before closing out the end of the season. He has averaged 34.6 minutes per game with 21.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. Herro has seen this Philadelphia team twice this season and has recorded 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and six assists. It will be another tough challenge for Miami as a whole but at the price tag of Herro, hard to overlook him with his history versus the 76ers.

NBA DFS – Top Value Targets

Nikola Jovic $4,400 – 22.96 DK points – 5.22 Value Rating

Nikola Jovic is a player which we have to hope finds his stride early and gets everything to fall in his favor. If not, his court time will be limited. There is a lot of risk that comes with playing him. He has played 16 minutes, 27, 24, 40, and 24 minutes in his last five games. Now, he has had success versus Philadelphia this season. He has averaged seven points, four rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes per game twice. With low ownership, he could be a solid play.

Buddy Hield $4,600 – 21.89 DK Points – 4.76 Value Rating

Another big risk is with Buddy Hield but the ownership could be crucial. In his last five games, Hield has averaged 12 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists while averaging 21.3 minutes. Miami has been pretty good at defending guards, allowing the position to average 22.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. Getting to face the second unit could be where Hield shines and pay off his price tag.

NBA DFS – Best Bets

We have launched the all-new PropBetter tool for our Premium users and you do not want to miss out on it. It covers the main Sportsbooks and allows you to find the edge for player props for each book. It’s a one-stop shop for you so you don’t have to go on a scavenger hunt to find the best place to place your money!

Buddy Hield over 8.5 Points +100 (DK Sportsbook)

Continuing on the Buddy Hield conversation and while it is a good challenge for him, he’s projected for 11.14 points tonight. This gives Hield a 31.19% edge to hit the over. In five games, with three starts, he has averaged 11 points versus Miami. Being at plus money, I’m locking this in.

Ayo Dosunmu over 21.5 PRA -112 (DK Sportsbook)

Ayo Dosunmu has had a lot of success versus Atlanta and the fast-paced style. In three games this season, Dosunmu has averaged 21 points, four rebounds, and four assists against Atlanta. They have struggled with guards all season as they allow them to average 23.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. Dosunmu should be able to continue his play versus Atlanta and help keep the Chicago Bulls playoff run alive.

The Boston Celtics and the Oklahoma City Thunder were crowned champions for the regular season in the Eastern and Western NBA Conferences, respectively. The scoring title went to Slovenian prodigy Luka Doncic, who averaged 33.9 points through 70 matches, dethroning last season’s winner, Joel Embiid, whose recent campaign was interrupted by injuries.

The latest Sportingpedia report investigates how much each of the 10 highest scorers in the regular NBA season was paid per point. Luka “Magic”, as Doncic is known within the basketball community, is the lone player who managed to score more than 2,300 points during the recently concluded campaign. Our data shows that Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards proves the best value for money among the 10 highest NBA scorers, receiving “merely” $6,606 per point.

Key Takeaways:

  • Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards has the lowest $ per point among the 10 highest scorers in the regular NBA season at $6,606 and is therefore the best “value-for-money” scorer on our list
  • Luka Doncic has scored the most points during the regular NBA season – 2,370
  • Each of Steph Curry’s 1956 points cost the Warriors $26,542 – the highest price among the highest 10 scorers in the 2024 NBA regular season
  • Only 4 players earned more than $20k per point with each of them having previously won an MVP award – Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry; They also are the only ones who have won an NBA title
  • Last season 4 players scored more than 2,000 points, while this campaign they are 7
  • Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jason Tatum, and Anthony Edwards are the 5 players who were among the 10 best scorers last season and repeat the accomplishment this term as well
  • Jalen Brunson, Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant, De-Aaron Fox and Stephen Curry are the 5 new additions
  • Steph Curry (36) and Kevin Durant (35) are the only players above 30 years of age
  • 7 of the 10 highest scorers play in the Western Conference while only 3 in the Eastern
  • 6 of the 10 highest scorers in the NBA are Americans, 3 are Europeans, and 1 is Canadian

Five of the 10 highest scorers remain the same as last season, with Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jason Tatum, and Anthony Edwards keeping their positions, while Jalen Brunson, Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant, De’Aaron Fox, and Stephen Curry are the 5 new additions. Of the 10 best scorers, Anthony Edwards proves the best value for money, being paid just $6,606 for each of his 2,049 points throughout the season. On top of that, Edwards is the youngest player on the list at just 22 years of age. Only two other elite scorers have been paid less than $15k per point — Jalen Brunson and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

At the other end of the spectrum, four players received more than $20,000 per point—Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry. Besides being the oldest in the group, these four are the only to have won an NBA title and each of them have been selected as the Finals’ MVP. Curry (36) and Durant (35) also prove that age is just a number, being the only players above 30 to find a place among the highest scorers. Each of Curry’s points cost the Golden State Warriors $26,542, almost four times more than Anthony Edwards’ cost of $6,606. Ant-Man’s case catches the attention, as he is not only the youngest of the crop but also the lowest paid. Obviously, inexperience is not a flaw, and it has not stopped Edwards from draining buckets, but it affects his wealth as he is the only elite scorer being paid less than $10k per point. It all will change for him next season, as Anthony Edwards’ rookie deal expires. He has already agreed to a super-max rookie extension, which begins in the 2024-25 season, worth an estimated $204 million over five years.

The scoring champion Luka Doncic receives $16,905 per point, which positions him fifth in our rankings. The Slovenian along with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are the only players in the NBA who have managed to score more than 2,000 points in consecutive seasons. New York’s Jalen Brunson is the only player who enters the ranking, while replacing a teammate. He eclipsed Julius Randle’s 1,936 points in 2022/23, with a total of 2,212 in the recently concluded season.
