The Scottish Open, as is so often the case at links golf courses, is liable to throw out a few unexpected names towards the top of the leaderboard. The high volatility inherent on links course can see the bounce of the ball or a sudden gust of wind be the difference between a birdie and a tournament ending triple bogey. And there are some who handle this challenge better than others.

These players are high risk and volatile plays. However, they all possess excellent golf links form and could be the difference your DFS line-up (or bank account) needs this week.

Finished 24th last week in Ireland with 4 rounds under par, where he also holds a 12th. Displayed improved approach and driving accuracy, suggesting his ball-striking may be on the improve. Has a 5th at windy at this year’s 2022 Qatar Masters, 5th and 14th at Dom Pedro at the Portugal Masters, 5th at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship 2019, and 6th and 25th at the Scottish Championship on the Torrance Course Fairmont St Andrews.
Won the 2017 St Andrews Links Trophy, one of the premier amateur trophies in golf played across 2 rounds at the Jubilee Course and the final two round at the Old Course St Andrews. Finished 18th here last year.
Joakim Lagergren – DK Pricing $6,100
11th for SG: Approach last week at the Irish Open and has now gained strokes approach in his last three tournaments. Won at Sicilian Open at the links style and exposed Verdura Golf Course. Holds form of 17th, 14th, and 3rd at Dom Pedro in Portugal, has a 2nd at the always windy Qatar Masters, and a 12th at 2018 Irish Open on the links course Ballyliffin. 2nd, 3rd, 2 x 4th, and 12th at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is excellent links form. 35th and 63rd last two starts here.
Sebastian Soderberg – DK Pricing $6,300
Lead the field last week for SG: Approach at the Irish Open, displayed improved on driving accuracy, and has now gained strokes putting in 4 of his last 6. Finished 5th at Dutch Open at Bernardus this year. Also holds a 20th at Qatar Masters, a 18th at Sicilian Open at Verdura, 7th and 27th at Portugal Masters, and a 34th and 39th the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship from two starts. Finished 9th at the Scottish Challenge in 2020.
Jack Senior – DK Pricing $6,300
4th at the 2010 St Andrews Links Trophy (behind Matthew Southgate), where he opened with -rounds of 70-73 on the Jubilee Course and subsequently shot 67-71 on the Old Course. 6 professional wins, two of which have come in Scotland at the Scottish Hydro Challenge and Scottish Masters. Both were some time ago and at lower levels, but further demonstrate his comfort playing in Scotland.
Finished 37th last week, where he was in the final group before a terrible final round of 79 ended his title hopes. Had he shot even par, he would have finished 4th. Finished 10th at this event last year.
Ewen Ferguson – DK Pricing $6,200
Won the 2022 Qatar Masters in very windy conditions for his first DP World Tour title at 25-years-old. 17th at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, 16th at the Scottish Challenge, and finished 30th at the windy 2020 Scottish Open which should present similar conditions to this week.
Gained on driving accuracy in 12/14 tournaments this year whilst driving distance is at usually at average to the field. Gained approach last two tournaments, including last week at the Irish Open when 3rd for SG: Approach out of the players who missed the cut and 13th for the entire field. Had one poor drive which cost him penalty strokes and a quadruple bogey, and saw him tumble from one shot off the lead midway through the 2nd round to missing the cut on the number.
Matthew Southgate – DK Pricing $6,000
I was pleased to see Southgate make the field, as he was the last entry following a withdrawal. This could see extremely low ownership on the basis that he would not have been available for slection to those who got their entries in early.
Widely regarded as a links specialist on the DP World Tour. He holds a 6th and 12th at The Open Championship, 2nd at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and 6th and 25th at the Scottish Challenge on the Torrance Course Fairmont St Andrews. Won the St Andrews Links Trophy by 5 strokes as an amateur.
Finished 16th last week at the Irish Open in a strong field. Has a 26th here in 2021 and a 9th here in 2020 under what should be similar conditions.
Andrea Pavan – DK Pricing $6,000
Very high risk and speculative play as he is in terrible form with his irons. He has correlated form this year at Abu Dhabi, Bernardus, and Qatar where he also holds a 13th in 2018, a 5th and 10th at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, 9th at Sicilian Open at Verdura, and he was 4th here in 2019.
Began the year with an 18th at the Dubai Desert Classic and 25th at the Abu Dhabi Championship at Yas Links, both featuring the strongest fields on tour being Rolex Series events and with windy conditions. He sits 4th for SG: Putting and 14th for SG: ATG on the DP World Tour this season, and the short-game could hold him in good stead when scrambling on a links course in windy conditions.
