For the final time this season, we are heading back to college to enjoy the CFP National Championship Game.
The National Champion Game sees two of the best teams in the nation square off in Los Angeles’s SoFi Stadium. On one side it’s a 13-1 TCU squad that is coming off a huge win against undefeated Michigan in the CFP semifinal game. On the other side is defending National Champions, Georgia, who survived a great matchup against Ohio State. This should be a great matchup with two great teams and will serve as a nice start to what should be a great month of football with the NFL playoffs starting later in the week.
Monday 1/9 CFB
1/9 CFP National Championship Captain Plays:
TCU Captain plays
Max Duggan ($17,400DK/$15,000FD): The highest TCU player on the Showdown slate and for good reason. Duggan all season has proven he is one of the best QBs in the nation. Over the course of the season, Duggan racked up over 4K yards and scored 40 touchdowns. While his scoring has been impressive, something that is more impressive is his lack of turnovers. He will have a tough matchup in the National Championship but his performance against the 6th ranked Michigan defense does give me confidence he can succeed against Georgia’s 11th ranked defense. In the semifinal against Ohio State, the Georgia defense couldn’t stop CJ Stroud who racked up 382 yards and 4 scores. While I will say Stroud is a better passer than Duggan, Duggan’s running ability should give Georgia’s defense headaches.
Quentin Johnston ($14,400DK/$11,500FD): I expect the number 1 ranked WR going into this year’s NFL Draft to end his time with TCU with a bang. Despite spending most of the season injured, Johnston still put up 1K receiving yards. If both semifinal games were any indication of what we might see Monday, then Johnston will have a huge game. In TCU’s semifinal against Michigan, Johnston had 6 receptions for 163 yards and a score. Meanwhile, in Georgia’s semifinal game against Ohio State, the Bulldog defense allowed two 100 yard receivers who also had three scores. For TCU to keep up with Georgia, Duggan and Johnston will have to continue to have their great connection which is why I have them as my favorite captain plays for TCU.
Georgia Captain plays
Kenny McIntosh ($12,900DK/$14,000FD): Georgia’s leading back is my favorite captain play from their team. McIntosh splits carriers with Edwards but has a massive advantage out of the backfield in passing situations. McIntosh played a big role in Georgia’s semifinal game, accounting for 126 yards and a touchdown. McIntosh’s matchup against TCU’s rush defense is favorable, they gave up 119 yards to Michigan’s Donovan Edwards in the semifinal. He also comes into this game with five touchdowns over his last four games, there is a strong chance he gets his sixth in five games on Monday.
Adonai Mitchell ($6,000DK/$9,500FD): A bit of risky play at the captain spot, but I think the payout can be huge. Mitchell has missed almost the entire season, but in his two games against Oregon and Ohio State, he has 7 receptions for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns. With the number of weapons that Georgia has Mitchell should see less attention from TCU’s defense which will open up space for him. I think Mitchell will be a popular play in the Utl/Flex spot, but I don’t see many people risking him at the captain spot so he could be a good way to get different in your SE contest.
UTL/FLEX plays
Georgia Plays:
Stetson Bennett ($11,200DK/$16,000FD): I’ve been wrong about this guy all season. I didn’t expect much from Bennett this year, but to lead a team to back to back National Championship games is an impressive feat. Bennett saved his best for the CFPs as he had a season high 398 yards and three touchdowns which is the 2nd most for him this season. TCU’s defense is worse than the OSU side he played last Saturday, they give up 50 more yards and about .5 more touchdowns a game. With the game being a possible shootout, I think Bennett is a great play as he should have plenty of weapons to compete with Duggan.
Brock Bowers ($8,000DK/$12,000FD): Speaking of many weapons, his best weapon is TE Bowers. One of the top TEs in the nation Bowers has been a great option for Bennett as he has 56 receptions for 790 yards and nine touchdowns. Bowers was kept in check by OSU, but I don’t see that being the case against TCU. Against Michigan, TCU didn’t seem to have an answer for their TEs. Freshman Colston Loveland from Michigan had 4 receptions for 36 yards. While the numbers don’t jump out, if TCU gives up 4 receptions to Bowers, they should be for a long day as at this point in their careers Bowers is far superior to Loveland.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint ($1,800DK/$8,000): His price surprised me but I’m not complaining. Rosemy-Jacksaint finished the year with 29 receptions and two scores. He is in no way a lock because he can easily put up a 0 but I like his potential. McConkey, Bowers, and Mitchell are the three top targets for Bennett but he does spread the ball enough for multiple targets to hit value. In the OSU game, 6 players caught 2 or more balls with four of those having at least 3 receptions. He is a better punt play on DraftKings than FanDuel because he doesn’t need much to hit value. It’s not hard to see 2 receptions 25 yards and a touchdown game from him.
TCU Plays:
Derius Davis/Taye Barber ($5,800DK/$5,600DK) ($7,500FD/$7,000FD): Including the together because they are very similar. Both had just over 35 receptions this season and scored five times. As I mentioned with Johnston, Georgia’s pass defense allowed three WRs to have at least 70 yards. While I think Johnston will get the majority of targets, both of these guys should still see a decent amount. The separating factor between the two is their role. Barber this season has had the more explosive plays averaging 5.2 more yards per reception compared to Davis.
Kendre Miller ($10,000DK/$11,000FD): I’m including Miller at the end because he is a GTD. He left the semifinal game with an undisclosed injury. He is trending towards playing, but he is a risky play even if he’s in. Georgia’s rush defense is the best in the nation and Miller not being 100% might struggle. I also have little interest in his backup Emari Demercado for the same reason of Georgia is the best rush defense.
Griffin Kell/Jack Podlesny ($3,800DK/$3,600DK): I have to include kickers because kickers are real people too. But in all honesty, I like both kickers for this showdown because of their price. They both should have opportunities for PATs and a few FGs as I think this is a close game.
