Zack Greinke

Your preferred 8/12 MLB DFS Pitching Picks. It’s not a big schedule and with limited pitching appeal, but we have the right choices for you.

Zack Greinke @ Chicago White Sox

DraftKings – $10,700, FanDuel – $10,800

The new Astro got off to a rough start in his debut as the Rockies tagged him for five runs. He heads to Chicago on this 8/12 MLB DFS Pitching to take on the White Sox. On the road this season Greinke holds a 2.85 ERA and a 8.32 K/9. He also has a staggering .204 BAA with only 12 walks given up. The White Sox strike out a ton and their implied run total opened up at 3.8 and has dropped to 3.5 quickly, I LOVE Greinke to dominate.

Joey Lucchesi vs Tampa Bay Rays

DraftKings – $10,000, FanDuel – $7,600

With the lack of higher quality 8/12 MLB DFS Pitching options here we will have to target a pretty good offense. Lucchesi is a different pitcher at home, and I’m all about it. At home he holds a 2.71 ERA with a .186 BAA and a respectable 8.53 K/9. I know the Rays offense is dangerous and could go off at any moment, but we get the huge pitcher friendly park upgrade and a pitcher who has been dominant there. I feel okay with this for cash for DraftKings, I’d still go with Greinke on FanDuel.

Ariel Jurado @ Toronto Blue Jays

DraftKings – $6,800, FanDuel – $6,300

This is another gross option, but everyone is so overpriced on this 8/12 MLB DFS slate. Jurado isn’t going to go out and drop 20+ points, but he could get us 15 and I’m all for it. He is much better on the road than in Texas, as he holds a 4.10 ERA and a .256 BAA on the road. The Blue Jays could go out and score a ton or just completely dud. This is the chance we’re going to have to take if we want Coors.

Eduardo Rodriguez @ Cleveland Indians

DraftKings – $10,300, FanDuel – $8,900

This is either a pay up for both of punt type of 8/12 MLB DFS Pitching day in my opinion, so we can take a look at a high upside pitcher. E-Rod has the ability to be the highest scoring pitcher on the slate with his strikeout stuff. The Indians do have the ability to strike out a ton and Rodriguez could easily dig those out. On the road he has held lefties at bay (.217 BAA) and has struggled against right handed bats (.281 BAA). The strikeouts are there for GPPs, we will just have to hope he finds them.

These pitching articles are always my favorite to write and it really helps me to understand the slate better. It not only gives us ideas on pitchers to use, but it also helps us to weed out some of the bats. We also have two free Monkey Knife Fight plays at the end and we went 2-0 with a couple of pitching picks on Wednesday.

7/26 MLB DFS Cash Game Pitcher of the Day

Zack Greinke, ARI at MIA

DK ($10,500)   FD ($10,200)

Greinke is easily my favorite cash game play of the day, as he should cruise right through this cupcake lineup. Let’s start with the Marlins, as they currently rank bottom-three in runs scored, OBP, OPS, wOBA and xwOBA. That’s really not a big surprise when you consider the fact that Marlins Park is the worst hitting venue in the Majors, owning the worst park factor in the league. That spacious ballpark should cater to a stud like Greinke, who’s currently pitching to a 2.93 ERA and 0.95 WHIP this season.

That actually includes a dud in the opener against the Dodgers, as he’s scored at least 24 FanDuel points in 17 of his 20 starts since then. Those brilliant numbers pair beautifully with his 24 percent K rate and the projections don’t line up either. Not only does Greinke enter this game as a –175 favorite, the Marlins have an implied run total of 3.5.

7/26 MLB DFS GPP Pitchers

Michael Pineda, MIN at CWS

DK ($9,000)   FD ($8,800)

Pineda has quietly had a great year for the Twins and its time that we start giving this dude the credit he deserves. What’s most impressive is his consistency, with Pineda going at least five innings in 13 straight starts while allowing three runs or fewer in all but one of those. That equates to a 3.72 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in that span while striking out a batter per inning.

That’s the guy that we’ve seen throughout his career, with Pineda generating a career 3.49 xFIP and 24 percent career K rate. Even those numbers surprised me a bit and we have to believe that consistency will continue in a matchup like this. Not only is Chicago missing Eloy Jimenez, they also currently rank 26th in K rate, 28th in runs scored, 25th in OPS and 23rd in xwOBA.

Zach Plesac, CLE at KC

DK ($7,300)   FD ($7,700)

Plesac had one nightmare start where he allowed seven runs to the Orioles but he has been tremendous outside of that. In his other nine starts, Plesac is pitching to a 2.51 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. Those awesome statistics are backed up by his 1.70 ERA and 0.80 WHIP at the minors this season and he’s simply hard to fade in a great matchup like this.

The Royals currently rank 24th in runs scored, 23rd in OBP, 23rd in OPS and 25th in wOBA. That doesn’t even take into consideration that they have one of the worst K rates in the league since the All-Star break. Missing Adalberto Mondesi only hurts this team more and it’s no surprise that Plesac enters this game as a –140 favorite.

Griffin Canning, LAA vs. BAL

DK ($7,200)   FD ($6,600)

Canning is in the midst of an ugly stretch but he’s simply much better than these last few starts would indicate. Facing the Astros and pitching at Texas is a good way to kill anyone’s ERA and WHIP but Canning was one of the best rookies in the AL prior to that. In fact, Canning pitched to a 3.79 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over his first 11 starts while striking out 63 batters across 61,1 innings.

The best part about this play is the matchup though, with the Orioles sitting 21st in K rate, 27th in runs scored, 27th in OBP, 26th in OPS and 29th in xwOBA. Vegas agrees with our assessment, making Canning a –245 favorite in this tasty matchup.

Joey Lucchesi, SD vs. SF

DK ($7,700)   FD ($7,100)

Lucchesi did allow six runs to the Cubs in his most recent start but he was stellar prior to that. In fact, the southpaw pitched to a 3.32 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over his previous 11 starts. That pairs beautifully with a 25 percent career K rate and 3.81 career xFIP. Those are fantastic numbers and he should succeed against an offense like this.

While the Giants are hot right now, they still rank 22nd in runs scored, 26th in OBP, 28th in OPS and 27th in wOBA. That’s really scary in a huge stadium like Petco Park, as San Fran’s 3.9 implied run total is one of the lowest on this slate, with the Padres entering this matchup as a -160 favorite.

7/26 MLB DFS Punt Play Pitcher of the Day

Yusei Kikuchi, SEA vs. DET

DK ($5,900)   FD ($5,600)

This is a total punt play based on pricing and matchup. Any time you see a pitcher facing the Tigers at this price, you have to at least consider him. Kikuchi has shown some signs of brilliance this season too, collecting at least 28 FanDuel points in eight starts this season. That would be monstrous production from a player in this price range and the Tigers would definitely be the sort of team he could duplicate that against.

The Motor City Kitties currently rank bottom-three in runs scored, K rate, OPS, OBP, wOBA and xwOBA. That’s simply disastrous and it’s really no surprise that Kikuchi enters this game as a –140 favorite in a pitcher’s park like Safeco Field.

7/26 MLB DFS Monkey Knife Fight Picks of the Day

After going 2-0 on Wednesday, we’re back at it today with more MKF picks! I actually have a career-high three picks for you today. There was just something special about all of these plays and they all stood out like great picks.

Zach Plesac Over 4.5 Strikeouts

Play MLB Player Prop Games and Get 100 Percent Bonus!

Joey Lucchesi Over 5.5 Strikeouts

Michael Pineda More Strikeouts Than Dylan Cease

The first two plays speak for themselves after my write-ups but this one looks great too. Not only does Pineda have the far superior matchup, Cease is also pitching to a 6.19 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. That’s really scary considering he has to face one of the best offenses in the Majors, who currently own the fifth-lowest K rate in the league. That’s why I could see Pineda going at least six innings and Cease not getting into the fifth, which would make this an easy cash!

If two out of three of these don’t cash, please find me on Twitter here and ridicule me!

There is a wide variety of DFS MLB arms to choose from today, from aces to really good punts. On a good-sized main-slate of games, there are many places to look for pitching.

DFS MLB Upper-Tier Arms

Luis Castillo, Cardinals at Reds ($10,500 FD, $11,200 DK): Castillo is the most expensive DFS MLB pitcher on the DK slate and the second most on FD. He is in a good spot but comes with risk. This will make him a GPP-only choice for me tonight. The risk is how the ballpark plays in hot weather. It lived up to its moniker of the “Great American Smallpark” last night for sure! That being said, Castillo is in the midst of a terrific year and is in a smash spot. He is starting against a team that really struggles against above-average right-handed pitchers.

Clayton Kershaw, Marlins at Dodgers ($10,800 FD, $11,000 DK): Kershaw is the reverse of Castillo in terms of DFS MLB pricing on the two sites. The Dodgers lefty ace is an excellent choice for cash games today. We saw what good pitching did to the Marlins last night and we can expect more of the same tonight. He has a 2.76 ERA in 11 career starts vs. the Marlins.

DFS MLB Middle-Tier Arms

Zack Greinke, Brewers at Diamondbacks ($9,000 FD, $10,000 DK): Greinke is coming off one of his roughest outings of the year against the Cardinals. Accordingly, he has been priced down a bit for DFS MLB pitchers, especially on FD. He is cash-game worthy on both sites, the low FD price tells me that FD is daring you to use him over Kershaw. Before the last start (where he actually salvaged a respectable 21 FD fantasy points), he was cruising on the season. His WHIP remains below 1.00 even after that start and today’s matchup, which is not perfect, can be navigated. .

Jeff Samardzija, Mets at Giants ($7,600 FD, $9,100 DK): The former Notre Dame wide receiver has pitched really well recently. You can’t ask for a better matchup for a DFS MLB pitcher. He gets a struggling offense in an extreme pitcher’s park. On DK, he is on the three game slate while on FD he is on the all-day slate. Samardzija looks to keep an excellent three start stretch going. Over those three starts, he has lowered his season ERA from 4.52 to 3.93 by having a 1.66 ERA with 17 strikeouts and only three walks.

DFS MLB Bargain Basement Arm

Jakob Junis, Royals at Indians ($6,400 FD, $7,900 DK): After two straight strong outings, both seven-inning starts, Junis is suddenly worthy of DFS MLB consideration. On Monday, Junis beat the White Sox, 5-2, giving up only five hits and one run while striking out a career-high 10.

Monkey Knife Fight Pick of the Day

The goal is at least one HR from this trio or two for double your money. With the weather still very hot and humid in Baltimore, look for the ball to carry well and for the Red Sox to get back into the win column at Fenway South.

We had 15 MLB DFS games on the slate on Sunday July 14. All points and price values are based off DraftKings.

MLB DFS Winners

Ryan Yarbrough ($6,500)

Ryan Yarbrough had a solid game yesterday against the Baltimore Orioles as a bulker. He went 6.1 innings and allowed a run on two hits with six strikeouts. Yarbrough has been one of the Rays’ best pitchers and lining up against one of the worst teams in baseball made it easier to dominate. Look to use him in his next MLB DFS outing.

Yarbrough’s Outlook

Yarbrough has been pitching well in his last seven outings, going 4-1 wth a 2.31 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP. He allowed the first baserunner of the day in the ninth inning, when the Rays had a combined perfect game. His next MLB DFS outing is scheduled for Friday against the Royals in the Trop. A bottom-third offensive team facing a hot pitcher means you should have him in your lineups.

Ryan McMahon ($3,700)

Ryan McMahon had one of his best games of the season at the plate against the Cincinnati Reds last night, going 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. He upped his season stats to .264 with seven HRs and 39 RBI. He has been hitting well lately, but you shouldn’t expect him to continue this streak for much longer.

McMahon’s Outlook

Ryan McMahon has been hitting well in his last seven games, going 8-for-24 (.333) with seven RBIs in as many games. McMahon doesn’t have the power numbers as many of the Rockies’ hitters, but he has been hot recently. The Rockies are scheduled to play two against the San Francisco Giants today at Coors Field. Expect the baseball to be spread all over the field and McMahon to tally some hits for you in MLB DFS.

MLB DFS Losers

Josh Bell ($5,600)

Josh Bell had a quiet MLB DFS night offensively, going hitless in three at-bats with a walk, against the Chicago Cubs. He hasn’t been hitting the baseball much of late, as his average dropped below .300 for the first time in a while. Do not expect him to break out of this slump for a couple more games.

Bell’s Outlook

Josh Bell has not been very good in the past week at the plate, going just 4-for-25 (.160) with a homer and four RBI in his past seven games played. He has a .320 slugging in that span as well. The Pirates go as far as Bell can take them and with him struggling, the Pirates will continue to drop games. The Pirates continue their road trip as they play against the Cardinals. Do not expect Bell to break the slump today.

Zack Greinke ($10,300)

Greinke did not have his ace stuff against the St. Louis Cardinals. He went six innings with five runs on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts. He has solid control of the baseball lately and is locating his pitches well.

Greinke’s Outlook

Zack Greinke has been pitching well as of late but struggled yesterday against the Cardinals. In his last seven starts, he is 4-2 with a 2.97 ERA and ihas allowed under a baserunner an inning during that span. He could potentially be preparing for a big second half. Greinke’s next MLB DFS outing is slated for Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers. That offense is too good to expect Greinke to correct himself during that start.

Injury Update

Mike Trout exited the game with calf tightness and is considered day-to-day.

Angels manager Brad Ausmus announced Jonathan Lucroy will miss about three weeks to undergo surgery to repair a broken nose.

Sunday’s are enjoyable for me in the DFS world, generally all the games are on the same slate and pitching choices abound. The first Sunday after the All Star Break is no different.

Upper-Tier Pitching

Zack Greinke, Diamondbacks at Cardinals ($9,600 FD, $10,300 DK): Sometimes FD, because they are a one pitcher site, seems to dare you to use a pitcher over another for some reason. That is the case with Greinke today. He seems to cheap and in too good of a spot (STL really struggles against righties, 25th in the league at OPS at .707, second to last at ISO with a pathetic .148) to not use him as your cash pitcher. For pitching purposes, he seems to be in the classic safe, cash-game mode today, with a high floor. Greinke is coming off a great first half. He threw seven shutout innings in each of his past two starts leading into the break.

Jacob deGrom, Mets at Marlins ($10,800 FD, $10,800 DK): Because of his volatility this season, deGrom will likely not be my pitching choice for cash games today. All you have to do is go back to a previous start in Miami, where he gave up six runs and nine hits in only five innings of work, to see the up and down nature of deGrom’s season so far. The Mets wisely gave deGrom, a NL All-Star, a full eight days off between this start and his most recent one. deGrom has one win in his last 10 starts, despite a 3.29 ERA in that span.

Middle-Tier Pitching

Jose Quintana, Pirates at Cubs ($8,000 FD, $7,300 DK): The DK price seems particularly appealing for cash games expecially if you want to use plenty of Coors bats. Pirates fans can hope that their annual second half swoon is not under way, but it probably is. And Quintana is likely going to be a big part of it continuing. Quintana has started to throw more breaking balls in his last two starts, and the results show that has been a wise choice. He has 10 strikeouts and one walk over 13 IP in those pair of outings. That included a seven-inning win over the Pirates on July 4. He is 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA in seven career starts vs. the Bucs.

Homer Bailey, Tigers at Royals ($7,100 FD, $6,800 DK): A possible cash-game choice is you just want to grab as many Coors bats as you can. This pick is about that fact and two others as well. Kauffman Stadium is an extreme pitchers park and the Tigers are really bad against righties. I am not going to blame you to roll out Homer today in your cash lineups.

Bargain Basement Pitching

Sandy Alcantara, Mets at Marlins ($7,600 FD, $6,300 DK): I guess the pricing makes Bailey and Alcantara interchangeable between bargain basement and middle-tier arms but the reasons behind it are the same. The Mets are not a good hitting baseball team and they will play is a park that is great for pitchers. And, if you want to use someone that has had success against an opponent this season so far, Sandy is your guy. May 19th at home against New York: a complete-game shutout with only two hits given up, a single walk and eight strikeouts.

Monkey Knife Fight Pick of the Day

I will not blame you if you want to go to Coors and do a Daniel Murphy, Phillip Ervin and Puig trio like this one from Tampa Bay. I love picking on the Orioles pitching staff as a whole. With their starter for today traded to the Red Sox, they will scramble to find another one and will likely ask a terrible bullpen for more innings than they normally would.

I think the Brewers crack things open tonight and score some runs.

Seattle Mariners Yusei Kikuchi (LHP) on the mound in Houston. He carries a 5.11 ERA, 5.55 FIP, and 5.10 SIERA on the season. Kikuchi has fairly similar splits and struggles quite a bit on the road. Kikuchi carries a .361 wOBA, .505 SLG, and .354 OBP against right handed batters. Everyone is waiting for the Astros to really break out again and I think this is a good spot for them to do so. Seattle batters are slashing to a .333 wOBA, .173 ISO, and .441 SLG over the last few weeks. They are hitting close to their season average.

Greinke has identical splits, allowing a .260 wOBA, .249 OBP, and .252 BABIP to both sides. Greinke gets a ballpark boost and has the clear advantage against a weak SFG offense. Arizona batters are slashing to a .272 wOBA, .127 ISO, and .349 SLG over the last few weeks. They are hitting well below their season averages.

They have struggled all season with right handed pitching.

Preferred DFS PlaysDakota Hudson $8400 FD | $6900 DK.

San Diego Padres Chris Paddack (RHP) is on the mound at home this evening. He has a 3.18 ERA, 3.99 FIP, and 3.87 SIERA this season. Paddack has a 45% hard contact rate and 40% fly ball rate. He has identical splits, carrying a .261 wOBA, .370 SLG, and .257 OBP against both sides this season. The Cardinals have struggled a ton against righties as of late and Paddack certainly has the arm talent to get the QS and win against this porous Cardinals lineup. The only concern I have is Paddack is not an innings eater, averaging four or five IP per game. Padres batters are slashing to a .358 wOBA, .214 ISO, and .493 SLG against right handed pitching over the last two weeks. They are hitting well above their season averages.

Preferred DFS Plays – Chris Paddack $8100 FD | $8300 DK. Fernando Tatis Jr. $4000 FD | $5500 DK. Manny Machado $3900 FD | $4900 DK. Franmil Reyes $2800 FD | $4100 DK.

Top Pitchers

  1. Chris Paddack (Not an innings eater so tread carefully)
  2. Dakota Hudson
  3. Zack Greinke

Top Stacks

  1. Houston Astros
  2. Milwaukee Brewers
  3. Arizona Diamondbacks
  4. For good measure I will most definitely have exposure to Coors, as should you. This game isn’t my top priority but the implied run total here just simply cannot be ignored.

This is a nice, normal-sized six game slate for a Monday. Cleveland is the only game with a minor weather concern. Kershaw is our featured chocie.

Upper-Tier Arm

Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers at Diamondbacks ($11,000 FD, $10,400 DK):
The Dodger southpaw is coming off seven scoreless, brilliant innings against the Giants. Because of the Dodgers concern about his workload and their hope of going deep into the playoffs, Kershaw is getting an extra day of rest for this start. For his career at Chase Field he’s 6-8 with a 3.70 ERA and 1.202 WHIP. A possible cash-game option, we will need to see if we can find some value bats to be able to afford his lofty price tag.

Middle Tier Arms

Zack Greinke, Dodgers at Diamondbacks ($9,100 FD, $8,400 DK): We do not have to look far for the next pitcher I like. Greinke’s worst start of the year was his first one, and that game happened to be against these same Dodgers in Chavez Ravine. You have to wonder if a change of scenery and how well Greinke has pitched since that start can result in a different outcome for this former Cy Young Award winner. This will be only the second time in his career that he has faced Kershaw. So far in June, Greinke is 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA. Greinke is a borderline cash play for me tonight but will make his way into a GPP lineup if I decide to enter those type of tournaments.

Eduardo Rodriguez, White Sox at Red Sox ($8,400 FD, $8,700 DK):
The lefty has been solid but not spectacular as of late, going seven innings in both of his last two starts. Rodriguez is 3-1 with a 4.00 ERA in six starts at Fenway this season. In his career against the White Sox, he is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in four starts, so both recent and history against the White Sox favors a good game from him in this spot. With the savings he offers me, he could be my cash-game option.

Bargain Basement Arm

CC Sabathia, Blue Jays at Yankees ($6,500 FD, $7,100 DK): For a starting pitcher who very likely be the largest favorite on the slate, his price point is simply fantastic. CC just might be my cash-game pitcher on this six game slate. In his last start against the Rays, Sabathia reached a milestone with his 250th career victory. He was effective in that start, giving up only
one run and three hits over six innings. This will be his first of likely multiple starts against the Blue Jays this season.

There were 15 games on the Saturday June 1st slate. We will discuss some players that outperformed their values and others that did not. All points and prices are from DraftKings.

Winners

Jon Gray ($7,400)

Jon Gray looked great pitching against the Toronto Blue Jays at Coors Field. In a ballpark where the ball flies off the bat, Gray threw 6.2 scoreless innings. He gave up only two hits, three walks and struck out seven. With the value he has provided and the Rockies on a hot stretch as a team, look to put Gray into your lineup for his next start.

Gray’s Outlook

Jon Gray has had an up-and-down season thus far. His ERA is now down to 4.11 after this outing. His next scheduled start is on Friday when the Rockies travel to the Big Apple to play the New York Mets. The Mets are a middle-of-the-road team offensively and if Gray can avoid Pete Alonso having a big night, he should leave with a solid outing.

Orlando Arcia ($3,500)

Orlando Arcia had a productive game yesterday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He finished 2-for-6 with both hits leaving the park, four RBI, three runs and a walk. Arcia hit his second home run in the 13th inning to solidify a victory and the momentum could carry over into today’s slate.

Arcia’s Outlook

Arcia has been playing well the past seven games, batting .333. He is now at eight home runs and 25 RBI, so seeing production to Saturday’s level isn’t always expected. The Milwaukee Brewers continue their series in Pittsburgh this afternoon. The Pirates used eight pitchers in yesterday’s game so with tired arms, be on the lookout for a few Milwaukee batters, including Arcia, to be prime targets on today’s slate.

Elias Diaz ($2,800)

Sticking with the Brewers and Pirates, Diaz put up a good game himself, going 3-for-7 with a double and four RBI. Diaz is performing as well as a backup catcher can with Francisco Cervelli on the seven-day concussion IL.

Diaz’s Outlook

Diaz has been playing well with Cervelli on the IL, batting .386 in his last 15 games. He also has multiple hits in his last four games so Diaz is outperforming his .643 OPS in 2019. The Pirates continue their series against the Milwaukee Brewers and even though there is no reason Diaz will slow down, be cautious with selecting him for today’s slate.

Losers

Zack Greinke ($9,200)

Greinke came into yesterday’s slate on a tear, with nine consecutive quality starts. However, the New York Mets got to him early and often. Greinke finished wit four innings and gave up four runs on seven hits. He also had two strikeouts and a walk. Luckily for DFS players that selected him, he got a no decision after the Mets blew their lead in the eighth inning.

Greinke’s Outlook

It was difficult to predict a dud like Grienke’s performance after all the previous success he had in the beginning of the 2019 season. This was his worst outing since Opening Day against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team with a lot better hitters than the Mets have. Greinke’s next outing is slated to be Friday in Toronto against the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays are tied with the Giants for the worst team batting average at .221. Expect Greinke to look solid against a lowly Blue Jays’ offense.

Jose Ramirez ($4,300)

The Chicago White Sox pitchers are in the bottom-third of baseball in almost every statistical category. Ramirez couldn’t manage a hit in four plate appearances and left a runner on base. It wasn’t the worst night, but with Ramirez’s expectations at the plate, he needs to at least reach first base.

Ramirez’s Outlook

Jose Ramirez is is now at .209 with four home runs and 17 RBI. Ramirez was looked upon one of the best offensive third basemen in baseball and just has not produced this season. Going into yesterday’s game, Ramirez recorded a hit in eight of nine games. The Indians and White Sox continue their series today and with a better pitcher in Lucas Giolito on the bump for Chicago, do not look for Ramirez to produce.

Injury Report

Steve Pearce of the Boston Red Sox was placed on the 10-day Injured List with back spasms.

Joey Gallo of the Texas Rangers left in the fifth inning with tightness in his left oblique.

The Minnesota Twins had Nelson Cruz begin his rehab assignment after being sent to the IL on May 14 with a left wrist strain.
