Tampa Bay Lightning

Welcome to Wednesday’s edition of Between the Benches.   After an 11-game slate night, we have just a modest 5-game slate tonight of NHL DFS. At first glance, we have some pretty glaring mismatches on the board tonight that we’ll want to attack.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Andrei Vasilevskiy ($8.5K DK/$8.1k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens – This is probably the biggest mismatch of the night as the Tampa Bay Lightning take on the lowly Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens are coming into this tilt struggling, scoring just 1.83 goals per game over the last 2 weeks. Over that stretch, they’ve won just once in 6 games. They are a team night in and night out that we’ll want to consider a goalie against as they just aren’t a strong offense.

With Vasilevskiy, we have one of the more consistent goalies of the last decade. A goalie that normally averages a GAA of 2.6 or less and a save % north of .900. This season has been no different. After some early-season struggles, Vas has been playing much better over the last month. He has just one game under 17.9 DK points and multiple games over 20. He’s in line to have a solid night against a bad team. Feel comfortable rolling him out in both Cash and GPP’s, more so Cash though as his price is high. Should Brian Elliot get the nod tonight, he’s also in play.

John Gibson ($7.1k DK/$6.9 FD) vs. Vegas Golden Knights– This is going to be strictly for GPP’s. Gibson has a ton of upside tonight as he returns from an injury. The Ducks give up a ton of shots and the Golden Knights’ offense hasn’t exactly been on fire, scoring just 2 goals vs. LA last night.

Gibson is an extremely volatile goalie. We’ve seen him get upwards of 30 DK points on any given night, and as few as -8. Against a suspect offense like Vegas, I expect him to be well in the positive tonight. He’s also extremely inexpensive on both sites tonight, making him a solid GPP play.

NHL DFS Stacks

Tampa Bay 1 (Point, Hagel, Kucherov) + Hedman vs. Montreal

We’ll be attacking Montreal on both ends tonight as their defense has been nearly as bad as their offense. Over their last 6 games, the Canadiens are giving up close to 15 high-danger chances per game and nearly 34 shots on goal. Against a solid Lightning team, that’s just not going to cut it and should cause them plenty of problems tonight.

While the second line is also in play for Tampa, I’m focused on their top line as it’s been one of the most productive lines in the NHL over the last 10 games. This line has combined for 9 goals over their last 10 games together, second most in the NHL over that stretch. The 2 I’m most focused on here will be Hagel and Kucherov. The 2 have combined for 13 points over the last 2 weeks. Hagel has been the goal scorer with 4 while Kucherover has been the assist machine with 5. Hagel does have back-to-back duds, but a date with Montreal should get him back into the scoring column. Same for Point if you want to go full stack.

Pittsburgh 1 (Crosby, Guentzel, Rakell) + Letang vs. Detroit

At some point this potent Penguins team will be dynamic again. Although they are on the tail end of a back-to-back I like the matchup for them tonight. The Red Wings are giving up goals in bunches. Over the last 2 weeks, the Red Wings have been giving up 4.5 goals per game. This is something that will hopefully help the Penguins snap out of the goals funk they are in.

We’ll target their top line tonight of Crosby, Guentzel, and Rakell. These three have shown a ton of upside at times this season. Even though the team as a whole has been quiet offensively since their winning streak ended, the trio have combined for 12 points over the last 2 weeks. They should be a force tonight against a Red Wings team that has struggled defensively at times this season.

Vegas 2 (Karlsson, Smith, Kessel) + McNabb vs. Anaheim

If you are fading Gibson tonight, stacking against him will make for a strong play. The Ducks give up a ton of goals and a ton of shots. That means upside for anyone playing against them. They also give up just a ton of high-danger chances. Over the last 2 weeks, they’ve given up close to 17 high-danger chances per game. That’s an insane rate.

I’m mostly interested in Karlsson and Smith here. Kessel is mostly fantasy irrelevant these days. Smith has been the majority of Vegas’s offense of late. Over the last 2 weeks, Smith has 5 goals and 2 assists. While Karlsson hasn’t been scoring any goals, he has been helping set them up. Over his last 6 games, he does have 5 assists.

The top line for Vegas of Stephenson, Stone, and Amadio is also very much in play.

Other Stacks: TB 1, Bos 1 and 2, NJ 2, Pit 2, Det 1, Sea 1, Cgy 1

NHL DFS Top Value Defenseman

  • Brayden Pachal- $2.5k on DK
  • Brandon Carlo – $2.6k on Dk
  • Erik Cernak – $2.9k on DK

Summary

We have a solid slate of games tonight. I’ll be going heavy on the Lightning and Pittsburgh tonight. If you’re willing to run some risk, make sure to Gibson into your lineups as your goalie.

Make sure to use our Projection model when setting lineups.

Welcome to Wednesday’s edition of Between the Benches.   We have a pretty nice-sized 7-game slate of NHL DFS tonight. On the outside looking in, it’s a tricky slate to navigate through but there are also some fun spots to target.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Alexander Georgiev ($8.4K DK/$7.5k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens – The Colorado Avalanche are one of the heavier favorites on the board tonight. While their offense is lacking right now, their goaltending has not been. The off-season acquisition of Georgiev has proven to be a good one for the Avalanche. Finally able to get some meaningful playing time, Georgiev has been really good this season. Through 21 games, the Avalanche netminder has 13 wins to go with a 2.46 GAA and a .923 save %.

He’s been great for them and that should continue tonight in a matchup vs. the Canadiens. Over the last 2 weeks, the Canadiens are just 2-4 and have scored just 1.83 goals per game. The only concern here is going to be the lack of shot volume as the Avalanche don’t give up a lot of shots and the Canadiens don’t take many. That said, this has shutout written all over it. I’d reserve Georgiev more for cash games tonight.

Karel Vejmelka ($7k DK/$8.5k FD) vs. Vegas Golden Knights– This is far from a safe pick. Nothing about playing a Coyotes goaltender will ever give me the warm and fuzzies. That said, there aren’t many goaltenders on the slate that have the type of upside that Vejmelka has. Vejmelka hasn’t given up less than 3 goals in a game since Nov 23, a stretch of 9 games. He’s had double-digit DK in 6 of those contests.

The Coyotes give up a ton of shots and that’s why he’s able to still be productive even though he has a GAA over 3 this season. This Vegas offense is not as scary as they’ve been in years past, especially with Eichel on the shelf. If you’re playing GPP’s tonight, Vejmelka is your guy. He will be mine.

NHL DFS Stacks

Minnesota 1 (Steele, Kaprizov, Zuccarello) + Spurgeon vs. Anaheim

I suspect this top line for Minnesota will be extremely chalky tonight. Not only have they been playing lights out, but they get just a monster matchup vs. the Ducks tonight. The Ducks have been bad, giving up over 4 goals per game over the last 2 weeks. They’re also coming off a beating to the Kings last night, losing to them 4-1.

The duo of Kaprizov and Zuccarello have been amazing of late. Over the last 2 weeks, Zuccarello has been both scoring goals and assisting on them. In his last 7 games, he has 6 goals and 6 assists. Because of that, his price is starting to creep up as it’s at $7.9k on DK tonight. Kaprizov has also been really good, with 3 goals and 7 assists in his last 7 games. These 2 should be highly owned tonight, but also extremely productive. They’re going to be a tough fade and not something I’d recommend doing. Adding in Steele will help bring down the average cost of the stack as he’s only $4.1k on DK tonight. I’d go full stack here.

Nahsville 1 (Novak, Forsberg, Granlund) + Josi vs. Chicago

This is going to be a case of which wins outs, bad offense or bad defense. My thoughts are that bad offense will win out here. The Blackhawks have been attrocious. I don’t think there’s anyway to sugarcoat it. They’ve lost 7 in a row and have given up 5 goals per game over their last 5. They are a trainwreck and we’ll want to attack them, even it’s with the Predators.

My lean here is their top line. Flip Forsberg is by far their most talented forward. Although he has just 1 goal in his last 7 games, he does have an iXG pretty close to 3. There’s more in the tank and it should come out today vs. a bad defensive team. I’ll prioritize pairing him with Roman Josi tonight. Josi is the safest play on this team and acts more like a forward than a defenseman. Over his last 7 games, Josi is averaging more than 7 shots + blocks. If you only play one Predator tonight, play Josi. You’ll be rewarded.

Tampa Bay 1 (Point, Hagel, Kucherov) + Hedman vs. Detroit

Tampa was a pretty big disappointment lats night, scoring just 1 goal vs. Toronto last night. Toinght, they get a much easier matchup vs. the Red Wings. The Red Wings are struggling right now as they are 0-4-2 in their last 6 games, while giving up close to 4 goals per game. This is a return to riches matchup for the Lightning.

We’ll utilize the top line here. My favorite 2 here will be Brandon Hagel and Brayden Point. The 2 of them have been the goal scores, as each have 5 goals over the last 2 weeks. I also do love Kucherov here, but he’s the most expensive and he’s really just been getting assists. They’re still great to get, but goals are what wins GPP’s.

Other Stacks: TB 1, FL 1, NJ 2, Col 1, Dal 1, Edm 1, Vgs 1 and 2,

NHL DFS Top Value Defenseman

  • Ryan Suter – $2.9k on DK
  • Dante Fabbro- $2.8k on Dk
  • Erik Cernak – $3.1k on DK

Summary

We have a really solid slate of games tonight. I’ll be going heavy on the Wild tonight, even though they’ll be extremely popular. Let’s crush it team!

Make sure to use our Projection model when setting lineups.

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  Tonight, we have a 10-game slate of NHL DFS to navigate through. At first glance, this is shaping up to be an entertaining slate that is loaded with options. We have a bunch of strong offenses in great spots. Expect a high-scoring slate.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Igor Shesterkin ($8.2K DK/$7.9k FD) vs. Philadelphia – With the recent play of both of these teams, this appears to be a lopsided affair. The Flyers are coming into this one 2-3-2 in their last 7, while the Rangers are coming in 5-1 over their last 6. The Rangers are finally playing the style of hockey everyone expected them to play this year.

Shesterkin has returned to his Vezina-winning form. He’s won 5-straight games and has allowed just 1 goal in 3 of those games. One of those games was against the potent Maple Leafs offense, a game that saw Marner’s point streak go by the wayside. Even on the road, the Rangers are heavy favorites in this one. A shutout against a poor Flyers offense is not out of the question tonight.

Connor Hellebuyck ($7.6k DK/$8.4k FD) vs. Vancouver Canucks – Connor Hellebuyck is quietly having the best year of his career. So far in 2022/2023, Hellebuyck has a career-low GAA of 2.39 and a career-high save percentage of .927. After a rough stretch of games that saw him give up a combined 9 goals to the Golden Knights and Capitals, Hellebuyck return to form against the Predators, giving up just 1 goal on 26 shots.

While the Canucks have been a solid team of late, this is a matchup that Hellebuyck should do well in. The Jets are 5-2 in their last 7 and should be able to add another win to the win column tonight. I’ll be using Hellebuyck in my GPP lineups tonight.

NHL DFS Stacks

Buffalo 1 (Thompson, Mittelstadt, Tuch) + Dahlin vs. Arizona

There are juicy matchups, then there’s this matchup. The dynamic offense of the Buffalo Sabres get to take on the defensively challenged Arizona Coyotes tonight. The Coyotes are on the back end of a back-to-back stretch after defeating the Islanders 5-4 last night. Even though they won last night, I’m focused on the 4 goals they gave up to a far-inferior offense in the Islanders. The Coyotes are giving up 4 goals per game over the last 2 weeks, putting the Sabres in a great spot to smash tonight.

I expect them to be popular tonight because of the matchup, but it’s just going to be too hard to pass up on one of the bright young stars in the NHL. Tage Thompson will be my core here as he has 8 goals over his last 5 games and 12 points. He’s been great and that should continue tonight. He’s pricey, but his linemate Casey Mittelstadt should help us stomach the cost. Mittlestadt has been playing well, with 4 assists in his last 5 games. Alex Tuch is also very much in play, as is Dahlin. Dahlin has been phenomenal this season.

Tampa Bay 1 (Point, Hagel, Kucherov) + Hedman vs. Montreal

Another team in an absolute smash spot tonight will be the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning head to Montreal tonight to face off against a Canadiens team giving up over 3.8 goals per game over the last 2 weeks. They’ll more than likely face Jake Allen tonight, a goalie notorious for giving up lots and lots of goals.

They’re expensive, but there may not be a hotter line in the game right now than the top line for Tampa. We’ll start with Point. Over his last 5 games, Point has 6 goals and an assist. For the type of production we should get here, a $6.8k salary on DK tonight seems fairly reasonable. Although he hasn’t been finding the net, Kucherov has been more than happy to help his friends do so. Over his last 5 games, Kucherov has 9 assists. $8.2k is a lot to pay though for someone that hasn’t been scoring goals. Knowing that I’ll be more than happy to pair Point with Hagel tonight. Hagel is just $5.1k on DK and has 6 points over his last 5.

Rangers 2 (Chytil, Kakko, Lafrenière) + Miller vs. Philly

Gerard Gallant has finally put the kids line back together and I’m all for it! This line has immense upside, especially in this matchup vs. a bad Flyers team. While they’ve only given up 3 goals per game over the last 2 weeks, we’ve seen this Flyers team have stretches where they’ve given up a ton of goals. That’s what I’m focused on here.

This second line for the Rangers is pretty high-risk. They can net us close to 0 tonight if they come out flat. That said, they also have a ton of upside and are extremely cheap. All 3 guys are under $4k on DK. After paying up for the top lines of the Sabres and Lightning, we need to save some money and this line will do it for us. My lean with this line if I could only pick 2 would be Chytil and Kakko. Both guys have goal upside.

Other Stacks: NYR 1, Tampa 2, Tor 1 and 2, Was 1, NJ 1 and 2, Buf 2, SJ 1, LAK 1

NHL DFS Top Value Defenseman

  • Scott Harrington – $2.8k on DK
  • Alexander Edler- $2.7k on Dk
  • Conor Timmins– $2.5k on DK
  • K’Andre Miller – $3k on DK

Summary

Tonight should be a fun night of NHL DFS. Teams like Buffalo, Tampa, and Rangers should have their way in terms of scoring. There are a plethora of options though tonight. While these 3 lines are my favorite to build around, my other stacks should do extremely well also.

Make sure to use our Projection model when setting lineups.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Saturday Slapshot where we’ll be focusing on tonight’s 7 game main slate of NHL DFS on DraftKings and FanDuel.  We’re at the point of the year where teams are either playing for their playoff lives or jockeying for position.  Thankfully, hockey is not like the NBA and we rarely see major players sitting out at the tail end of the season.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

Connor Hellebuyck ($7.8K DK/$7.2k FD) vs. Los Angeles Kings – We should see Hellebuyck in net tonight for the Jets in a home matchup vs. the Los Angeles Kings.  Hellebuyck has back-to-back really solid outings, with 26 DK points against Buffalo and 22 points against Arizona.  This is a similar match tonight for Hellebuyck as the Kings haven’t really been scoring.  Over the last month, they’re scoring just 2.5 goals per game.  This is a good sport for Hellebuyck to continue his solid recent play.  He should be one of the top goalies on the night.

Jake Oettinger ($7.9k DK/$7.5k FD) vs. San Jose Sharks – The San Jose Sharks are just not a team that should strike fear into any goaltender.  Over the last month, they’re scoring just 2.6 goals per game and outside of their top line, they have very little firepower.  Oettinger has been a great story for the Stars this NHL season, with a 24-11-1 record and a GAA below 2.5.  He’s won 5 of the last 7 games he’s started and tonight should make it 6 of 8.

Tonight with Goaltending I’m not going to stray too far from the two I mentioned.  I will be locking in one of the two and just moving on.  The only other goaltender I have any interest in is Jeremy Swayman, but he’s pricey on DK and I just don’t think I want to go that high for him.

Stacks

Toronto 1 (Matthews, Marner, Buntin) vs. Philadelphia

This line is going to be chalky, there’s no denying it.  The Leafs are playing a Flyers team that is giving up almost 4 goals per game over the past month.  That’s laughably high and it’s something we’ll want to take advantage of tonight.  There isn’t much I need to say about Matthews to try to sell you on playing him.  He’s already at the 50 goal mark and he’s at the point where he’s chasing 100 points.  He’s one of, if not the best player in the NHL.

There isn’t much time left in the season for him to get there, but my guess is that he puts a dent into that number tonight.  The duo of Matthews and Marner will be pricey tonight, but it will be well worth it.  The two have combined for 19 points over their last 5 games and close to 40 scoring chances.

Tampa Bay 1 (Point, Kucherov, Stamkos) vs. Montreal

If you want to fade Toronto tonight, another option is Tampa Bay 1 tonight.  Montreal is Montreal and they give up a ton of goals.  They gave up close to 3.6 goals per game in the month of March.  Brayden Point is playing some great hockey and if I do decide to fade Toronto, he’d be a priority.  Over hist last 5 games he has 8 points and 20 scoring chances.

Between him and Stamkos, they have 42 scoring chances, 15 of which are considered to be high danger chances.  The two of them will also come at a $4k discount over Matthews and Marner, making the rest of your team solid and not having to punt as much.  I think I just sold myself on playing Tampa over Toronto today.

Boston 2 (Haula, Hall, Pastrnak) vs. Columbus

What going to Tampa 1 allows you to do tonight is to also grab some of Boston.  Boston is playing Columbus tonight and they are always someone we want to play against.  In March the Blue Jackets gave up more than 4 goals per game.  That’s an accomplishment not worth bragging about.

I’m going down to their second line and playing Pasta and Haula.  Haula is just $3.5k on DK tonight but he’s playing well above that salary.  Over his last 5 games, he has 2 goals and 6 assists for 8 points.  At his salary, he’s close to a free square.  This line should combine to be one of the top lines on the slate as Boston obliterates Columbus.

Other stacks (Dal 1, Cgy 1 and 2, Stl 1, WPG 1, Phi 1)

Top Value NHL Defenseman

  • Noah Hanifin – $3.9k on DK – Always good for a few blocked shots and shots per game.  Opens up salary.
  • Jacob Middleton – $2.7k on Dk – Back-to-back games with 3 blocks and some shots.  Great value.
  • Jaycob Megna – $2.6k on DK and continues to have no regard for his body
  • Matt Dumba – $4.4k on DK – Double-digit points in 5 of his last 6 games.  Should be over $5k.  Great value.

NHL DFS Summary

We have some great offensive teams in just unbelievable positions tonight.  Toronto is going to be extremely popular tonight.  You’ll need to decide to play or fade them.  If you fade, I may, Tampa is in just as good of a spot tonight and come in much cheaper.  That’ll make the rest of your team that much better.

Make sure to use our optimizer before setting lineups.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

NHL Playoff Preview (First Round)

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Playoff Preview (First Round). A little different than my daily game pick articles. The NHL Playoffs are finally here! After a grueling 56-game season we are down to 16 teams. With the nuances of scheduling this year, each team will have a mini bracket within their division and then each team who makes it out of their division will be re-seeded for the Final 4. Not too many surprises with who made the playoffs. Here are the 16 teams who will be playing in the First Round:

Image

We have some great First Round matchups. I will preview each series, post each series price and give my predictions. I will also keep a tracker for my entire slate of playoff bets, as I have some futures on who makes it out of their division, as well as who wins Lord Stanley. I will provide that info at the end as well as some general thoughts for betting the NHL Playoffs. Without further ado, let’s dive into the series.

East Division

#1 Pittsburgh Penguins (-150) vs. #4 New York Islanders (+121)

Season Series: Penguins: 6-2-0, Islanders: 2-4-2

Preview: The Penguins sport the best home record in the league and have home-ice advantage in this series. They should be fully healthy with the returns of Malkin a few games ago and Tanev is projected to be ready for Game 1. The Penguins had a great season and are well deserved to be at the top of this division. The Islanders started of the season very nicely and were battling for first, but things unraveled for them after the Trade Deadline. The Penguins are known for their offense and the Islanders for their defense, but both teams can handle their own on the opposite spectrums as well. The Penguins are 2nd in GF over their last 20 games while the Islanders are 30th. The major X-factor right now is the health of Islanders’ top goaltender Seymon Varlamov. Sporting top-5 goaltending numbers this season, if he is unable to play than the Islanders will have to rely on Russian rookie Ilya Sorokin, who has decent numbers himself but not to the standard of Varlamov. Two teams trending in opposite directions leaves me no choice in my prediction.

Prediction: Penguins 4-1

#2 Washington Capitals (+118) vs. #3 Boston Bruins (-143)

Season Series: Capitals: 4-4-0, Bruins 4-2-2

Preview: What a series this should play out to be. We have the 2018 Stanley Cup Champions versus the 2019 Stanley Cup Runner-Ups. We have the return of Zdeno Chara who spent 14 seasons with Boston and was the longest-tenured captain in the league before signing with Washington as a free agent in the offseason. Each team won 4 matchups against the other this season. The Capitals surprisingly are an underdog in this series, and that must be attributed to Boston’s recent form. They have been a freight train after acquiring Hall, Reilly, and Lazar at the Trade Deadline. The Bruins could not score pretty much all season but then finally woke up the last month. The Caps meanwhile have been battling injury concerns to their star players and also had to deal with the Tom Wilson/Battle of New York saga. The Bruins have been rolling and have been in the top-10 in offensive metrics over their last 20 games. The thing with the Capitals is their underlying numbers were not that good but they could mitigate that with their scoring talent. However, recently the Capitals haven’t been able to do that. Goaltending is also interesting for both teams as the Capitals will roll with the inexperienced tandem of Samsanov/Vanacek, while the Bruins will probably start with Rask but rookie Swayman could make a case for deserving that net. With the Bruins rolling and actually low key dominating their season series with Washington analytically despite it being tied 4-4, I have no choice here.

Prediction: Bruins 4-2

Central Division

#1 Carolina Hurricanes (-240) vs. #4 Nashville Predators (+190)

Season Series: Hurricanes: 6-2-0, Predators: 2-5-1

Preview: The Hurricanes have dominated this season series over Nashville winning 6 of 8. The Predators snuck into the playoffs on the curtails of Juuse Saros incredible goaltending. The Hurricanes offense has been rolling all season and there is no reason to see that slowing down here. A hot goaltender can change the complexion of a series, no doubt. But Saros will need to stand on his head to steal this one from Carolina. Nashville held their own in their matchups against Carolina this year despite only winning 2 of 8. Hurricanes offense, defense, and special teams have been better all season. The only edge you can really give to Nashville is goaltending. And there is a chance Mrazek/Ned can get on a roll and even out that edge. I feel generous to say the Preds won’t roll Carolina, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they do.

Prediction: Hurricanes 4-2

#2 Florida Panthers (+116) vs. #3 Tampa Bay Lightning (-143)

Season Series: Panthers: 5-2-1, Lightning: 3-5-0

Preview: The Battle of Florida. These teams do not like each other and this has the potential to be an absolute battle and best series of the first round. You could argue Tampa underperformed a little bit this year as the defending champs finishing 3rd in their division. But they were without their best player Nikita Kucherov all season and captain Steven Stamkos for the last 10 or so games. Kucherov is projected to be ready for the playoffs so we will see if he can come back right in stride or has some rust. The Panthers on the other hand had quite the season and outperformed expectations to a 2nd place finish in the division. A devastating blow to star defenseman Aaron Ekblad who sustained a season-ending injury with about 15 games to go. However Mackenzie Weegar has picked up the slack on the back end. Goaltending is where Tampa will display quite the edge with reigning Vezina winner Andrei Vasilevskiy in net for the Bolts and probably Chris Dreidger in net for Florida, with Bobrovsky and rookie Spencer Knight there in case Dreidger falters. With the Lightning having some injury concerns and coming off a long cup run, I am going against the grain here.

Prediction: Panthers 4-3

North Division

#1 Toronto Maple Leafs (-275) vs. #4 Montreal Canadiens (+210)

Season Series: Maple Leafs: 7-2-1, Canadiens: 3-6-1

Preview: The Maple Leafs have been viewed as the favorites to make it out of the North Division since Day 1, and are actually the only team with minus odds (-135) to make it out of their division of the entire league. They will be squaring up with a Canadiens team that has been hot and cold all season. They started off really hot and people were even thinking they might be better than Toronto, then went ice cold and fired their coach, before finishing the season relatively strong. Defense is their specialty but they’ve had to deal with multiple injuries on the back end. It’s unclear if they will go with their most expensive asset (Carey Price) or the goaltender who has performed better this season (Jake Allen) for this series. Nothing would surprise me and could potentially see the Canadiens pulling an upset if they get hot, but the Leafs are definitely the stronger team and should take care of this series.

Prediction: Maple Leafs 4-2

#2 Edmonton Oilers (-186) vs. #3 Winnipeg Jets (+150)

Season Series: Oilers: 7-2-0, Jets 2-7-0

Preview: Two teams that are going in opposite directions. Behind the incredible season from Connor McDavid, Edmonton has had a strong end to the season. Winnipeg has been reeling behind all sorts of defensive problems all season, as well as an injury to their strongest winger in Nikolaj Ehlers. Luckily for Winnipeg, Connor Hellebuyck is arguably the best goaltender in the league and the kind of goalie who can steal a series. The problem is the defense in front of him has been bad all year and towards the end of the season he had some games where he didn’t stand on his head. Oilers goalie Mike Smith has actually had quite a surprising season as a 39-year-old veteran on the last legs of his career. With the way McDavid and Draisaitl have been rolling all season, I cannot go against the best player(s) in the league.

Prediction: Oilers 4-2

West Division

#1 Colorado Avalanche (-335) vs. #4 St. Louis Blues (+255)

Season Series: Avalanche: 5-3-0, Blues: 3-5-0

Preview: The Stanley Cup favorite and Presidents’ Trophy winning Avalanche begin their Cup run against the 2018 Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues. The Avs have probably the strongest and deepest team in the 16-team field this year. They’ve dealt with some COVID and injury issues all season but should be healthy rolling into playoffs. This is the biggest series discrepancy based on Vegas lines as well as my Model. The Blues have been inconsistent this season and Binnington hasn’t played to the level he did when they won the Cup in 2018. The addition of Krug in the offseason was supposed to cancel out the loss of Pietrangelo, but it hasn’t been that simple. The Avs are a wagon and even though the Blues have playoff experience, I will rely on the data and the models here.

Prediction: Avalanche 4-1

#2 Vegas Golden Knights (-240) vs. #3 Minnesota Wild (+190)

Season Series: Golden Knights: 3-4-1, Wild: 5-1-2

Preview: Viewed as one of the favorites to win the Cup coming into the season, the Golden Knights have quite the draw in the First Round. Losing the top seed and Presidents’ Trophy with the Avs win last night, Vegas goes from playing a weaker St. Louis team to a young and exciting Minnesota team. To make matters even worse Minnesota has had Vegas’ number all season with only 1 regulation loss for Minnesota in 8 matchups. Vegas is deep at every position and will be interesting to see if they roll out Fluery or Lehner in net, both goalies are more than capable. Minnesota on the other side has been riding the coattails of exciting rookie Kirill “The Thrill” Kaprizov. With stronger than expected defensive and goaltending results they cruised to a 3rd place finish in the division and face a team they have matched up well against all season. There is definite series price value on Minnesota if you are looking for an upset to happen as there always is plenty in the Stanley Cup playoffs. I’m going to ride with the team I am confident can make a Cup run, but would not be surprised either way.

Prediction: Golden Knights 4-3

Current Bets and Notes

My approach for this playoff season is to ride a few Cup futures, bet some teams to make it out of their divisions, and then take any series or series spreads I think have some value. From there I might bet an individual game where I see value on a team or think the other team has a good chance to even the series. I really like taking the Game 1 loser in a series I think will be very evenly matched. I also may hedge some of my futures out if the opportunity presents itself (i.e. Vegas makes it to the Cup, take the other team to win the series and profit either way).

These are the futures I have so far, which will be updated as the playoffs roll on, and will also be on the Sports Betting Picks page:

Excited for the NHL Playoffs! Going to be a roller coaster of emotions with upsets and lots of things you won’t expect, which is what makes it the best sport on earth. Let’s ride this wave!!

NHL Betting Picks Tuesday 4/27

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Tuesday 4/27. The Model got absolutely obliterated last night. 0-4. An overtime loss, a one goal loss, and an over that miss by a half goal. The only bad L was the Ducks and that was only a half unit play for the value. It happens but it still stings. That is what happened when I take a weekend off, pretty sure it happened last month. It’s also that weird time of year when you can’t really tell what certain teams are playing for and those games have some risk (Sens last night). We move on to Tuesday, as always Trust the Process.

We have 8 games on the NHL slate tonight. Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

Dashboard 1

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Flyers Money Line (-132) over the Devils
  • Flyers/Devils Over (6, -113)
  • Red Wings Money Line (+123) and Puck Line (+1.5, -220) over the Blue Jackets
  • Penguins Money Line (+100) over the Bruins
  • Rangers Puck Line (-1.5, -120) and Money Line (-295) over the Sabres
  • Hurricanes Money Line (-125) over the Stars
  • Stars/Hurricanes Under (5.5, -117)

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight. We are waiting for confirmation on goalies before we lock in the Preds/Panthers over. We are only taking it if we get a Bobrovsky/Rinne goaltending matchup.

My Picks

Islanders ML (+108): This one is pretty simple. These teams are relatively evenly matched at full-strength, but the Caps are without Ovi tonight. Yet for some reason the Isles are still plus money. The Isles have sputtered a little bit as of late, but Trotz always seems to coach against his former team well. They have lost 2 straight against them and I doubt they lose a 3rd. I think the Isles get it done tonight and with the plus money, we are getting some great value here.

Blackhawks/Lightning Over 5.5 (-130): The Lightning score a lot of goals and the Blackhawks are pretty good at giving them up. Getting this at the 5.5 makes me like this a lot, even if it is a little juicy. The Lightning are 50% on their overs and the Blackhawks are 48%. But at home the Lightning are 60% and the Blackhawks are 52%, so both even better in the current environment of tonight’s matchup. Also the Lightning average 6.13 goals/game on the road and the Blackhawks average 6.22 goals/game at home, so we love this play tonight.

Hurricanes ML (-125): Running it back with the Canes tonight. Same logic as yesterday, but we have the better goaltender tonight (Ned). Carolina coming off of a loss, and they are the better team even though they are a little banged up so is Dallas. The Stars do not have a significant home ice advantage and the Canes are rather good on the road. Feeling good about a comeback tonight.

NHL Betting Picks Thursday 4/8

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Thursday 4/8. The Model had another undefeated night going 1-0-1. The Maple Leafs took care of business against Montreal winning 3-2. And then there was the under in the Sens/Oilers game. Looked great all game. 1 goal in the 1st. 2 goals in the 2nd. And then Leon Draisaitl decided to ruin my night and get the 6th goal on an empty net with 0.2 seconds left. 0.2!!! 2 tenths of a second. The game was over. He couldn’t give me my glory. Safe to say I didn’t sleep well last night. Whatever. On to today.

We have 10 games on the NHL slate tonight. Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

Dashboard 1

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Lightning Puck Line (-1.5, +123) and Money Line (-210) over the Blue Jackets
  • Islanders Puck Line (-1.5, +135) over the Flyers
  • Capitals Money Line (-118) over the Bruins
  • Jets Money Line (+110) over the Canadiens
  • Devils Puck Line (-1.5, +195) and Money Line (-129) over the Sabres
  • Rangers Puck Line (-1.5, +190) over the Penguins
  • Oilers Money Line (-186) over the Senators
  • Oilers/Senators Under (6.5, -120)
  • Red Wings/Predators Under (5, +117)
  • Blackhawks Money Line (-104) over the Stars

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight. There are a couple leans today that I don’t like enough to make official plays but if you want to sprinkle or throw a free bet on them (like I did with this first one), feel free. The Canadiens -127 have a big edge on The Model which prices them at -143. I also like the Rangers -130 and the Flyers +150, but again not enough to make official plays.

My Picks

Free Picks

Capitals ML (-115): The Bruins are banged up right now with McAvoy out and rolling out their 4th string goalie tonight in Swayman. The Caps are +4u at home this season and Boston is -2u on the road. They only have a slight edge on the BetMGM ML at -115 but The Model prices them around -135, which is why we like them tonight.

Lightning -1.5 (+128): The Lightning have yet to cover a puck line against Columbus. The same Columbus who has looked pretty terrible against everyone not named the Lightning this season. It’s hard to figure out exactly why Columbus plays them so well. Tonight I think a regression is in order. Considering the -1.5 number against Columbus was -110 and +100 in the last two games, I think we are getting value at +128.

Premium Pick

Hurricanes/Panthers Under 6 (+100): True life: I’m addicted to betting under 6 at plus odds. I didn’t learn my lesson from yesterday so I’m ready to get burned today. These teams just hit 7 goals in their last meeting but we get the good goalie matchup with Nedeljkovic and Driedger. These teams only hit under 6 in 1 out of 5 meetings so far this season, but pushed on 2 others. Neither of these teams average over 6 total goals/game this year with CAR at 5.53 and FLA at 5.83. Let’s ride this tonight and hate ourselves later.

NHL Betting Picks Thursday 4/1

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Thursday 4/1. An easy 1-0 day for The Model last night with Toronto easily beating Winnipeg 3-1. Both of the leans hit too with Colorado dummying Arizona 9-3 and the over hitting before the 1st period ended, and LA as a +190 dog beating Vegas 4-2. I got ratted from Tuesday or else I would’ve took those. Of course that happens. Whatever, on to today.

We have 9 games on the NHL slate tonight. Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

Dashboard 1

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Lightning Puck Line (-1.5, -108) over the Blue Jackets
  • Rangers Money Line (-250) and Puck Line (-1.5, +110) over the Sabres
  • Panthers Money Line (-245) over the Red Wings
  • Canadiens Puck Line (-1.5, +132) over the Senators
  • Penguins Money Line (+107) over the Bruins
  • Hurricanes Money Line (-162) over the Blackhawks
  • Predators Money Line (+108) over the Stars
  • Wild Puck Line (+1.5, -200) over the Golden Knights

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight.

My Picks

Free Picks

Rangers -1.5 (+110): The Sabres are on cloud 9 after finally getting a win last night. The bad news is they face a red hot Rangers team tonight. The Rangers are +9.32u on the puck line on the road this season and the Sabres are -10.67u at home, a 19u difference. That alone makes me like it but throw in the fact the Sabres won last night, are probably not playing Ullmark because of a B2B, and the Rangers hot streak of late just makes me love it even more. This seems like a no-brainer.

Capitals/Islanders Over 5.5 (+105): The Capitals rank second in the NHL in total goals this season (6.2), while the Isles rank second-to-last (5.12). However the Islanders hit their over 68.75% of the time at home. The Caps have a lot of shooting talent leading the league in Goals Scored Above Expected. They’ve scored 3, 6, and 3 goals respectively in 3 matchups with the Islanders this season. The over has only hit in 1 of those matchups but I like getting the 5.5 number at plus money.

Premium Pick

Lightning -1.5 (-108): The Lightning lost against Columbus on Tuesday, but the numbers still suggest they should beat them by more than a goal. The good news is we have Vasilevskiy in net so that should improve the defensive side of things. The Lightning are +10.39u on the puck line at home this season and Columbus is -7.72u on the road. Tampa have yet to cover the puck line against Columbus this year which scares me a little bit, however I think they come out with some force tonight and get it done.

NHL Betting Picks Thursday 3/18

Welcome to Keith’s NHL Betting Picks Thursday 3/18. Yet another undefeated night for The Model. The Jets were up 3-1 but the Habs got 2 quick ones to push it to overtime before Ehlers got the game winner for the Jets. The Oilers offense exploded to an easy 7-3 win over the Flames. Both plus money underdogs, we love to see that.

We have 10 games on the slate for tonight. Let’s take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

To interact with the dashboard click here.

Dashboard Edges

  • Penguins Money Line (-155) over the Devils
  • Bruins Money Line (-265) over the Sabres
  • Bruins/Sabres Under Goals (5.5, -127)
  • Panthers Money Line (-205) over the Predators
  • Hurricanes Money Line (-190) AND Puck Line (-1.5, +145) over the Blue Jackets
  • Blue Jackets/Hurricanes Under Goals (5.5, -108)
  • Red Wings Puck Line (+1.5, -165) over the Stars
  • Jets Money Line (+125) AND Puck Line (+1.5, -190) over the Oilers
  • Wild Puck Line (+1.5, -200) over the Avalanche
  • Ducks Puck Line (+1.5, -235) over the Coyotes

Keep an eye out for Starting Goalies tonight. The game to watch tonight will be the Wild and Avalanche. While I’m not putting any action on that game it should showcase 2 of the best teams in the league this season. Not to mention the Avs are getting Makar and Byram back on defense which should provide them a boost.

My Picks

Free Picks

Ducks ML +115: The Ducks and the Coyotes are relatively even teams this season, and the Ducks have a goaltending edge with Gibson projected against Hill. In their last 10 games the Coyotes are last in the league in Corsi For Percentage and Expected Goals Percentage. Last night worked well taking 2 dogs and we are hoping the dogs continue to bark tonight. UPDATE: Miller in net for Ducks, still like it but not as much.

Blue Jackets/Hurricanes Under Goals (5.5, -102): Both of these teams hit their overs at under 44% this season, Columbus specifically is only 16% on the road. Nedeljkovic has played well this year and Columbus has struggled to score which we why we like this under tonight.

Premium Pick

Lightning -1.5 (+106): The Lightning have had their way with Chicago this season sporting a record of 4-0-1. They have covered the puck line in only 2 of the 5 games, however Vasilevskiy is in net and the Lightning are +7.25u on the puck line as a favorite.
