Sports Betting Market

FanDuel continues to dominate the Washington, D.C. sports betting market, even after the recent entry of Caesars Sportsbook, BetMGM, and DraftKings into the online sports betting space. The Office of Lottery and Gaming reported a total of $39.6 million in sports bets for August 2024, with FanDuel leading the way.

The district’s online sports betting market expanded in mid-July, allowing up to seven operators to enter the market. Despite the increased competition, FanDuel remains the top choice for bettors.

FanDuel Maintains Strong Hold

Since taking over from GambetDC in April, FanDuel has been the preferred sports betting operator in Washington, D.C. In August, FanDuel reported $21.7 million in total sports betting handle, resulting in $2.7 million in gross gaming revenue and over $550,000 paid in taxes to the district.

Even with the addition of three other operators, FanDuel’s strong performance reflects the trust and popularity it has built among bettors in the district.

Here are the full handle and tax revenue totals for August:

  • Caesars Sportsbook: $5,396,299 handle, $64,375 in tax revenue
  • BetMGM: $5,162,492 handle, $90,117 in tax revenue
  • FanDuel: $21,669,798 handle, $550,350 in tax revenue
  • DraftKings: $7,405,304 handle, $262,550 in tax revenue

New Players Enter the Market

The Washington D.C. City Council approved a new fiscal budget in June, allowing up to seven online sports betting operators to do business in the district. By mid-July, Caesars Sportsbook, BetMGM, and DraftKings joined FanDuel in the online betting space. Unlike the others, DraftKings only holds an online sports betting license, while the rest also operate retail sportsbooks in D.C.

Fanatics Sportsbook Launches in D.C.

Fanatics Sportsbook entered the Washington, D.C. market last week through a partnership with the Washington Spirit, becoming the team’s official sports betting partner. The sportsbook launched on Thursday, Sept. 12, marking Fanatics Betting and Gaming’s first sponsorship deal with a professional women’s sports organization.

Fanatics Sportsbook operates under a newly introduced Type-C license, which was made available following the City Council’s decision to expand the online sports betting market. The Type-C license allows sports franchises to partner with a sports betting operator to conduct online sports betting and is taxed at 30% of gross gaming revenue. The license costs $2 million for a five-year term, with a $1 million renewal fee after the initial term.

FanDuel’s Continued Success

Despite the entry of new operators, FanDuel remains the dominant player in the Washington, D.C. sports betting market. The sportsbook’s ability to maintain a strong handle and generate significant tax revenue underscores its position as the top choice for D.C. bettors. As Fanatics Sportsbook enters the scene and other operators establish themselves, it will be interesting to see how the competitive landscape evolves in the coming months.

Sports betting in Washington D.C. has seen a dramatic turnaround since the legalization in May 2020, thanks to recent changes in the market. For years, D.C. bettors were limited to using the glitchy and underperforming GamBetDC platform, which was the city’s sole operator. However, the tide turned in April 2024, when D.C. officials ended their contract with GamBetDC and brought in FanDuel Sportsbook as the new operator. The move has already proven to be a game-changer, delivering impressive results for both bettors and the district’s revenue.

FanDuel’s Rapid Success as the Sole Operator

In just three months, from April to June 2024, FanDuel accepted a staggering $68.5 million in betting handle in Washington D.C., outperforming GamBetDC’s entire 2023 handle of $66.4 million. This achievement is even more remarkable considering it was accomplished outside of football season, which typically drives the highest betting volumes. The potential for D.C.’s sports betting market is clearly vast, especially with a competent operator like FanDuel at the helm.

During its initial three months, FanDuel also generated $11.3 million in sports betting revenue, surpassing the $9.5 million that GamBetDC managed to accumulate over its last 18 months. As a result, FanDuel contributed $4.5 million in taxes to the district in just three months, a sum greater than GamBetDC’s total tax contributions for the entire 2022 and 2023 calendar years combined. This underscores not only FanDuel’s popularity among bettors but also the substantial financial benefits to the local government.

Overall, more than 87% of sports betting revenue in Washington D.C. for the second quarter of 2024 came from FanDuel, highlighting its dominance during its initial months as the sole operator. However, this market landscape is poised for change as new competitors enter the scene.

Expansion of DC Sports Betting Market

The online sports betting landscape in Washington D.C. has undergone significant changes in recent months. While FanDuel enjoyed a head start as the exclusive operator from April to June, the district has since expanded its market to include more sportsbooks. In July 2024, Washington D.C. announced the approval of additional operators, significantly altering the competitive landscape.

Previously, Caesars and BetMGM were restricted to operating within a two-block radius of their physical locations at Capital One Arena and Nationals Park, respectively. However, with the introduction of the Sports Wagering Amendment Act, these operators are now permitted to accept bets throughout the entire district. The act also introduced seven additional licenses for operators willing to partner with local professional sports teams.

As a result, Caesars and BetMGM have expanded their reach, and DraftKings has entered the market by partnering with D.C. United, the city’s MLS team. More sportsbooks are expected to launch in the district in the coming months, creating a more competitive environment.

While FanDuel has enjoyed a strong start as the sole operator, the arrival of these new competitors is set to shake up the market. The coming months will be crucial in determining how these sportsbooks perform and how they impact D.C.’s growing sports betting industry.

The sports betting market in Maryland has seen a healthy expansion, contributing significantly to the state’s tax revenues. According to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, more than $60.3 million was generated from sports betting tax in the fiscal year of July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024. This formed part of the state’s overall gaming tax revenues of $1.585 billion.

The sum made this period the second-highest single-year gaming tax revenue contribution to the state, falling just short of the previous fiscal year’s record $1.589 billion. This figure encompassed $824 million from casino gaming, $699.6 million from lottery proceeds, and $61.3 million from both sports wagering and daily fantasy sports combined.

Of note, the fiscal year 2024 was the first full year for online sports betting in Maryland, previously having only been active for seven months in 2023. Sports betting tax revenues are channeled into the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, aimed at bolstering public education programs.

During the year, the sports betting sector experienced significant growth, with three retail sportsbook outlets and two mobile sports wagering platforms launching. In total, 13 retail locations and 12 mobile platforms were operational during the fiscal year.

The total sports betting handle for 2024 reported by Maryland Lottery and Gaming was $5,374,116,452. Online sports betting led the charge, amassing more than $5.19 billion in handle, notably surpassing retail sports betting, which handled a total of $180,622,269.

Online sports betting also drove the revenue numbers for the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, contributing $58,069,256 in tax revenues compared to $2,242,200 from retail sports betting. The state’s sports betting for the FY 2024 resulted in a 10.6% hold rate.

Excess sports wagering prizes, which amounted to $985,862 during the fiscal year, are earmarked for supporting responsible gaming programs.

The year in review was the second biggest year of gaming contributions to the state, as reported by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency. On average, the combination of the lottery, casinos, sports wagering, and daily fantasy sports provided an average of $4.3 million daily to state programs and services.

John Martin, the Director of Maryland Lottery and Gaming, praised the performance. He stated, “Despite the exceptional results from FY 2023 setting a challenging benchmark, FY 2024 also delivered a robust performance. With the launch of a new daily lottery game and the continuous expansion of the sports wagering market, we are proud to facilitate funds for vital state programs.”
