As the sun rises over the historic Royal Montreal Golf Club, one would like to say that excitement fills the air for Day 2 of the Presidents Cup. Unfortunately, it instead descends upon perhaps a dreadful sense of realisation that this event may have already reached a foregone conclusion. But, there is still money to be made as we preview Day 2 in our Presidents Cup Foursomes betting tips.
Make no bones about it: it was a disastrous first day for the International team. Beyond the clean sweep the USA achieved when going 5-0 in the Day 1 Fourballs, is the additional fact that statistics do not bode well. Foursomes has been where Team USA has dominated this format. Their record in Presidents Cup Foursomes sessions reads 79-42-21. When compared to their Fourball record of 63-65-14, the writing really does look to be on the all.
As the International team attempts to regroup from today, Captain Mike Weir made a rather bizarre decision to sit Tom Kim. Tom Kim was the Internationals team’s 2nd best player in the Fourballs, making 4 birdies and carrying an insipid Sungjae Im who couldn’t muster a single birdie. Bear in mind, only two players on each squad don’t play in the opening two days. Why you would bench one of your star players, who actually offered a modicum of resistance, is beyond me.
Presidents Cup Day 2 – Foursomes Betting Preview
2u Cantlay/Schauffele over Matsuyama/Im $1.87 (Betfair)
Team USA Captain Jim Furyk made his intentions clear immediately at the press conference when announcing the pairings for Friday. He was going to keep the foot on the throat. The dynamic duo of Cantlay and Schauffele are reunited once again, and were sent out first; their names exiting his lips almost as soon as he was allowed to name his first picks.
This pair’s achievements across the years have been phenomenal. At the 2023 Zurich Classic, they shot a record 6-under 30 for the lowest nine-hole score in Foursomes. That was en route to a record-breaking 18-hole foursome score of 9-under 63. That was when defending their 2022 title at that event, where they had shot a 59 and 60 in Fourballs on the way to victory.
This cohesive unit also holds a wonderful record at the Ryder and Presidents Cup. Notably, they have played 5 matches of Foursomes and remain undefeated.
Looking toward Day 2 of the Presidents Cup, there is little to suggest that we shouldn’t be betting on them again here. Cantlay was statistically the best player on Day 1, amassing SG: Total +3.93 led by outstanding ball-striking with SG: APP +2.90 SG: APP and SG: T2G +2.73. Xander was the 2nd best on the day for SG: T2G +2.72. They each compiled 5 birdies each for the day.
Meanwhile, Sungjae Im was dreadful in round 1. He was 2nd worst on the day for SG: Total and SG: T2G. He failed to make a single birdie in Fourballs, which is a sin in that format. Matsuyama at least managed a couple of those, albeit he was still the 5th worst player of the day.
1.75u Morikawa/Theegala over Scott/Pendrith $1.90 (Betfair)
Three of this group already played together on Day 1, with the only change being Pendrith displacing one of the Australians in Min Woo Lee.
Pendrith did look better on Day 1, making 7 birdies and carrying Bezuidenhout who could only contribute one circle to the scorecard. However, he now holds an unenviable record of 0-5-0 at the Presidents Cup.
The more esteemed of the International pair is Adam Scott, who you feel has to perform in this match if they are to have a chance. He managed just two birdies. Additionally, the second came on the 18th hole in garbage time after the match was already lost and Theegala had just a tap-in left for birdie. Scott was the 4th worst player of the day for SG: Total and SG: APP, and the 3rd worst for SG: T2G.
Morikawa compiled 4 birdies on the day and looked comfortable throughout, including a small gain with the putter. As such, some of Theegala’s work is a little hidden. He had 4ft 7in for birdie on the 1st, except Morikawa already holed an 18-footer footer. Likewise on the 12th, where he had 5ft left for birdie.
In fact, on the 11 holes where he didn’t contribute a score, he was within 5ft for either a birdie or par on 8 of them. He had a 5ft 10in par putt and a 10ft 11in birdie putt on two of the other holes. You could easily argue this he would’ve made just one bogey all day were he to have holed out.
I expect this to be a reasonably tight match, so did consider Scott/Pendrith at the value. However, with Morikawa outperforming Scott and Theegala looking solid, it was enough for me to give the Americans the edge.
1.5u Bezuidenhout/Day over Homa/Harman $2.30 (Betfair)
I’ll reiterate: it is a travesty that Tom Kim is sitting today. Bezuidenhout was the 2nd worst for SG: OTT and SG: PUTT and the worst for SG: ATG. The only caveat is that Bezuidenhout was 4th best SG: APP on Day 1. Bezuidenhout has also been the 4th best putter in this field over the last 6 months.
Perhaps the International leadership team is using some strokes gained data too and expects some positive putting regression. Day looked reasonable in the Fourballs. He gained in all strokes-gained categories except for SG: OTT, including ranking 6th for SG: APP and 4th for SG: PUTT.
The real question comes down to whether Harman and Homa can find some form together. Homa’s game has been in a truly horrible state since April of this year. He was lucky to make this squad ahead of Horschel, who emphatically reiterated that fact by winning the BMW PGA Championship at 18/1 for us last week. He ranks the worst statistically of all players for the last 6 months, followed narrowly by Harman who ranks 3rd worst.
The pair do have some history from last Ryder Cup. They lost in Foursomes to Aberg/Hovland 4 & 3. They then won the USA’s first point of the event in the Saturday Foursomes, beating Lowry/Straka 4 & 2 before a tight win in Fourballs.
The fact is, we just haven’t seen any positive play from these two recently. It feels a bit of a throwaway from Furyk to pair them together here. A case of sending them out there, and seeing if something clicks. On paper, they are the more accomplished pair. But, Foursomes is notorious for highlighting weaknesses and birdies are harder to come by. Hence, I’ll hazard a chance Bezuidenhout/Day can be an underdog winner here.
1.75u Clark/Finau over Conners/Hughes $1.95 (Betfair)
Wyndham Clark did hold some question marks entering this event. After an electric start to the year, where it felt he was in contention at every single Signature Event only to be pipped by Scottie Scheffler, he seemed to let his foot off the gas a bit during the middle portion of the season. He did, however, end the year on a more positive note with 4 consecutive top 14 finishes including a run of 7-13-8 in the playoffs.
He again demonstrated his propensity for big moments on Day 1, where he was the 2nd best player in SG: Total. That included ranking 2nd for SG: APP and 3rd for SG: T2G. He and Finau contributed 4 birdies to their respective pairings in the Fourballs.
We didn’t see Hughes on Day 1, as he was one of two players rested. He likely adds some requisite putting acumen to this pairing, with Conners often struggling the closer you get him to the green. The worry comes that some of Conners elite iron play seemed lacking in the opening match, where he lost strokes across the board including on approach. He made birdies on his first two holes, but then nothing after that.
There is perhaps more to this match than many suspect. You could make a case that the Canadians have the crowd on their side, and simply outlast the more volatile pairing of Clark and Finau. However, the Americans are the classier pair here, with Finau having shown sneaky good form all season and Clark showing some recent positive signs. A few early birdies from them could put a lot of pressure on the Canadians in front of an expectant home crowd.
2u Scheffler/Henley over Si Woo/Benny An $1.74 (Betfair)
Well, the question of whether Scheffler would benefit by being separated from his friend Sam Burns was emphatically answered on Day 1. It’s like when you wanted to sit next to your best friend in class, but the teacher knew you would do more work if on different tables. And we saw that come to fruition, with Henley making 4 birdies and Scheffler another 3 for a combined 63 as they romped to victory against a strong pairing of Sungjae Im and Tom Kim.
Henley took his chance after finally earning his spot on Team USA, ranking the 3rd best player for SG: Total. He gained in all categories except SG: OTT, which is not of concern given his shorter hitting and propensity to be a more accurate driver. Scheffler was again impressive with his ball-striking, where he ranked 3rd for SG: APP. They ranked 5th and 4th for SG: T2g respectively.
Si Woo sat out day 1, and Benny An played ok making 4 birdies when facing Finau/Schauffele. The real concern for the Internationals here comes down to one question: who is going to make the putts? Over the last 6 months, Benny An ranks 3rd worst and Si Woo Kim the worst in this field for putting. Against this pair of elite ball-strikers, I’m not sure you will get away with that in Foursomes.
4u USA Day 2 Winner $1.62 (888Sport/TAB)
1u USA 4-1 Day 2 Correct Score $6.50 (Unibet)
These two are pretty simple really. The odds for the USA to be the winner of Day 2 feels extremely generous after a dominant Day 1. They now move to their best format in Foursomes and are favourites in all 5 matches today, 4 of which they are priced as the heavy favourites. I have fair odds for this option to be $1.50, so it is well worth finding this inflated number.
I’ll back it up with a small stake on the USA slipping in one of these games, but asserting their fortitude in the Foursomes and winning Day 2 by 4-1.
