We are at Torrey Pines for The Farmers Open This site’s South course has hosted Opens and is no stranger to Majors. It ranks in the top 10 for difficulty in all measurable metrics. This week’s news is that they have been grooming the South course to resemble it’s Major and Open difficulty and it’s showing. You can dismiss a -28 winning score this week. Rahm is soft priced again and even with his bloated ownership he will be a difficult fade. For the AMEX we put out Adam Schenk as a Frisky Biscuit play for 6600 salary and 1.3 % ownership. He blew chunks. My Player picks listed under the ownership hit every play except Taylor Pendrith, whose -8 left him just short of the cutline. We were heavy on Jason Day who finished 18th, three shots off a tie for sixth. Schenk played lights out in practice rounds, and the key variable was getting back into tourney play, there’s a major difference between putting for 20.00 with your practice round group and golfing/putting for a few hundred thousand or a few million.

The Course – The Field

This tourney has the North and South courses and the North is much easier and will produce the most scoring. You don’t need an accurate bomber for the North course, you will for the South.

Whether to trust the Weather

At present the weather is calling for calm on Wednesday with temps in the mid forties, then on Thursday- steady winds 15-17 mph from 11: 00 am to 7:00pm EST with gusts to 35 mph. We are back in Coachella Valley for the Amex this week with some star power ready to tee it up over three different courses. For the Win Daily Sports golf staff it’s exciting to watch Scheffler, Rahm, Cantlay, Kim, Finau, IM, and Si Woo go at it. Xander will make a go of it after withdrawing last week. He has had back treatments and says he’s ready. We also know that shot link will only be available for one third to one half of the tourney which brings some variance in metrics and performance. These courses offer plenty of birdie opportunities and according to Jon Rahm its “just a big F*cking putting contest.” There isn’t much rough to speak of and only 1/3 of the course holes have water hazards. For the Sony Open we put out Brian Stuard as a Frisky Biscuit play for 6300 salary and 1.5 % ownership. He made the cut with strokes to spare and brought great value for both his effort and his price allowing you to pick another player up top with a higher pedigree. This brings our record to 21-5 for a golfer under 5 % owned and a 6K salary who must make the cut. My Player picks listed under the ownership hit every play except Tom Kim. It was the first time Kim was the heavy favorite with a bullseye on his back, he is used to coming from back in the pack to amaze and surprise. He lost strokes putting which is an outlier for him. The Course – The Field

This tourney offers each player a turn at all three courses so everyone gets three days of scoring. Saturday night there will be a 54 hole cut down to the final 70 players, we get five more players in this format than the usual 65. They will play the Stadium course again on Sunday to determine the champion.

Whether to trust the Weather

At present the weather is calling for calm winds for Thursday in the 2 to 4 mile range with no discernable edge to morning or afternoon waves. Make sure you check with Win Daily Sports Discord later tonight for weather and wind updates.

Targets and Traps

Rahm needs no explanation and his price is soft. Cam Young has dropped from first to third most popular ownership. I will be above field average on him and get different elsewhere. Cantlay is a solid play. Leverage in the top tiers belongs to Scheffler and Finau. Expect concentrated ownership in the 9K range as well. Harman is the ownership leverage there, he shouldn’t be your first or second choice but he offers value even though he rarely wins. He was on the optimal lineup last week as a solid third or fourth play. As far as Will Z, he always plays the tougher fields really well. This field isn’t tough, it’s just a bit better than last week. This field ranks behind last years, at a 307 rating. The U.S. Open is in the 850’s, so Z is a pass for me. The 8K range has Pendrith, Lee, Clark and Poston as strong pivots to the chalky range, The 7K range has tremendous value at 7500 and below. I prefer Ben Taylor (7000) to the chalk Lipsky (7300). The only golfer I will have a decent amount rostered in the high 7 range is Jason Day. Mitchell and Rodgers are in my pool for pivots and sprinkles in that range. NeSmith is drawing ownership and I like the pivot to Callum Tarren. I like the Taylors this week, Pendrith, Montgomery and also Moore. The 6K range is pretty weak this week. I will have my low owned Frisky Biscuit 6K play in Discord tonight.

One of my Palo Alto crew will be watching the practice rounds for intel this week. So far the buzz is about Phil Mickelson not being involved anymore. For years he and his charities have been the host of the Amex. After he mentioned that he should be acknowledged for dealing with some “scary MF’s” to force the PGA to open it’s purse strings, both Amex and the PGA quietly made future plans without him. Most of the staff and vendors and volunteers are vocal and have noticed him missing this year. Last years winner (Swafford) as well as previous winners have made the move to LIV and will not be involved. It will be interesting to see if the Golf Channel or NBC even mention last years champion.

This past week The PGA Draftcast saw their guest host win the week which is a rarity, unless your Jason Sobel. When I first started out I must have asked him 100 questions a week. He was kind enough to answer some of them….for a very short time…smile. Last night there were names like Clark, Pendrith and even Hossler, (who I like this week) being rostered. This is the week to pivot to lower owned players with the upside, with three days of scoring it balances the field a little more. Use the Nicklaus and LaQuinta courses for Show Down. Don’t be afraid to roster the harder Stadium course on day 1 for the main 4 day tourney. They all have to play it once, if a golfer comes out with a -3 on the harder course day 1 and knows he has two easier courses left it creates a momentum mentality, its a slight edge but an edge just the same. If he shoots +3 he knows he can come back and make the cut with two easy courses to follow.

Last week Jon Rahm exploded on Sunday like the volcanoes on the Hawaiian Island course they played on. Collin Morikawa blew a six stroke lead and finished second. For the Sentry we put out Trey Mullinax as a solid play for 6200 salary and 8% ownership. He finished 14 under, a stroke away from top 20, and brought value for both his effort and his price allowing you to pick another stud up top.

2021 was sweet for me. I took down 6 tourneys, including 20K in a tennis tourney I used a golf program for and the sage advice of Mr. Pickett, our friend from the north and an excellent tennis forecaster for Win Daily Sports. I used some of my winnings to upgrade to integrated AI systems and this past year I only sniffed the top 10 a couple of times. I was relying on the AI too much and it showed. A lesson learned.

Penn Gillette, the one half of Penn and Teller, (the top magicians on the planet) is a mathematical genius. Penn has written several books on Chaos math. Recently they did a study at Penn where they put up a huge screen in the cafeteria and put dots, lines and dashes all over it, changing frequently, and the one constant was that it was totally random at all times. Over three days over 4000 students who ate there were asked what if any pattern they saw, and every single one mentioned a perceived pattern, not one single response was for total randomness. Humans seek patterns, in social arenas, in problem solving, in gaming and in DFS. All the time. Every time.

One of the proven theories in Chaos math is that a sub optimized construct over a finite period of time including variables WILL become optimized. Four days of golf, (a finite time) weather, injuries, W/D’s, players moods (being the variables) means that helpless looking team you built could take it all down. Its a proven fact.

I am in no way suggesting you not use an optimizer. Win Daily Sports has an excellent optimizer that can help you define and refine your golfer pool. If you use them please try and input some rules. For example, if playing Tom Kim this week I want at least one of the other golfers to be Conners. (HINT) If you just run the opto blind you will spend your GPP budget quickly. Remember, we all seek patterns no matter what, our brains are hard wired to seek them out. Being just one player different can mean many extra zeroes on your green screen. (instead of sharing last place money with fifteen hundred strangers). This is for GPP only, cash games can use the more standard opto with most of the chalk being preferred.

The Course – The Field

This is a smaller course, 7000 yards and a par 70. This is one of 10 courses over the season where shots gained putting is a key metric. Those of you with favorite golfers who are suspect putters may have an out on this course due to the large greens and forgiving nature. The rough will be higher (3.25 to 3.5 inches) than it normally is but is not considered too penal.

This will be the third year at Memorial for The Houston Open. With the birdie fests going on recently in the second season you could expect another 24 under to win. If you played even par in this tourney over the last two years you would have ended up in 40th place, and that’s for both years. This course is rated in the top 10 of most difficult to score from around the greens, fairway run off areas and the actual rough. This course does carry major- type lines and hazards, especially with the dry, brittle Bermuda rough at almost 3 inches. Our model is projecting a 12 under to 14 under victory. The Results

Last week our Frisky Risky Biscuit play was C. T. Pan who withdrew from The Houston Open this week. He told his hometown paper he tweaked something last Friday at Mayakoba. We do not offer this as an excuse, more to reinforce the volatility of DFS golf.

I remember sitting at +13K with only Sunday to go and with Jon Rahm holding a sizable lead going into Sunday. Late Saturday after finishing a great day, a PGA official told him he had tested positive for Covid and had to withdraw. I ended up that week +180. Joel lost 50K+ based on a ruling by an official as well. Ask Stix about DJ putting and the monetary difference between a birdie and bogey when you are on the brink of winning a huge tourney.

El Camaleon Golf Course was designed by Greg Norman, yes, that Greg Norman, in 2006. It is a resort style course that’s the 5th smallest on tour this year. Bombers won’t have much success here as the tight lies require precision shots. There is dense jungle vegetation and canals that snake through the course that scream double bogey or worse for the errant tee shot. The greens are Paspalum with a rating of 10 on the meter. This means you can paint your house in between the putter striking the ball and it reaching the hole. At present the weather in South Carolina is calling for winds 4-6 MPH Thursday and Friday. On Saturday winds will jump to 22 mph and be calmer on Sunday at 12 mph. There is no discernable edge to either wave. Deep Dive Dave noted in Discord that the mornings will be much cooler, and as the day warms up the ball will travel farther.
