Week 5 NFL DFS Tuesday Night Showdown Preview: Bills at Titans

A bizarre Week 5 NFL DFS concludes with the Bills and Titans on a rare Tuesday night contest, and we’ve got the breakdown to help you win big money!

Introduction to Single-Game Showdowns

DraftKings calls them “Showdowns,” and FanDuel doesn’t really have a name for them other than “Single-Game Contests,” but whatever we call them they require an understanding of game narratives and game theory – which means we need to target low-ownership players that will give us the best opportunities within the narratives and game outcomes we’re expecting.

My picks will focus almost exclusively on finding GPP-winning combinations that have a chance at taking down the contests you’re entering, be they single-entry or MME. While we can’t cover all the possible combos or provide full lineups for you to deploy, the goal here is to give you the tools to win and highlight some names that will help make for profitable results.

If I enter five lineups in a large-field GPP, at least three of those lineups will focus on the most likely game outcome (based on Vegas odds, props and totals), with one or two contrarian builds. As we know, late-breaking news can have a significant effect on full slates, and that’s just amplified with single-game contests. Let’s get to the game!

Week 5 NFL DFS MVP candidates (1.5x points)

Some notes on the differences between MVP on FanDuel and DraftKings: The 1.5x point boost on FD comes with no salary penalty, while and DK also bumps the salary to 1.5x – a crucial factor in deciding who we can and cannot afford on both sites. We can use this to our advantage on FD by occasionally targeting non-QBs to establish more variance and more unique lineups, and on DK it allows us to build more hearty overall stacks when we punt the MVP position with a cheap but high-upside player.

Chalk: Josh Allen (DK $19,500, FD $16,000)

Pivot: Derrick Henry (DK $16,500, FD $14,500)

Contrarian #1: Devin Singletary (DK $12,000, FD $12,000)

Contrarian #2: Jonnu Smith (DK $10,800, FD $10,500)

Some notable injuries/COVID updates: For the Bills, rookie RB Zack Moss (toe), veteran WR John Brown (calf) and standout CB Tre’Davious White are all questionable, with Brown having the best chance of suiting up and contributing. LB Matt Milano is out. White’s absence would mean a logical upgrade for A.J., Brown (knee, questionable), who is expected to return for the Titans following three weeks off. The Titans will be without WRs Corey Davis and Adam Humphries, who are both on the reserve/COVID-19 list along with seven other Tennessee players. The preparation, talent, health and overall football edge is overwhelmingly in the Bills favor, though the defensive unit – especially the secondary – is pretty banged up.

The obvious chalk at captain will be Bills QB Josh Allen, who leads his undefeated team into Tennessee on the heels of four straight 25+ point fantasy performances. He’s averaging an impressive 8.96 yards per pass attempt this season (second to only Jared Goff), has thrown for 1,326-12-1 in four games and has added 83 rushing yards and three TDs on the ground. I’ll gladly eat this chalk and pair him with speedy WR Stefon Diggs. Using Allen with Devin Singletary is also a possibility, since the Bills could be spending a lot of time in the Titans red zone and the Tennessee secondary is one of its strengths, with Kevin Byard, Malcolm Butler, Johnathan Joseph and Kenny Vaccaro all healthy for this game.

My favorite pivot if you can’t afford Allen at CPT is Derrick Henry, assuming they continue to utilize him in the passing game. I could see Ryan Tannehill or A.J. Brown having a big game as well, but the Bills are missing Milano and Henry has logged 34, 27 and 29 touches in his first three games of 2020. The former Heisman winner is fully rested; the last game the Titans played was in September.

Another option for the CPT spot on DK is Jonnu Smith, sincehe could see upwards of 10 targets from Tannehill this game, and he allows you to fit in several Bills players and Henry.

Week 5 NFL DFS Utility options (and some DOs and DON’Ts)

Remember to build your team based on a narrative that makes sense, and utilize the WinDaily fantasy toolbox for cheatsheets and projections that can help you tremendously with lineup building.

DO: Build a trio (or quartet) of offensive weapons for a team that makes sense together

DON’T: Forget to check inactives before game time and be ready to pivot. It’s a pretty fluid situation these days and there are some obscure but possibly relevant Titans WRs (Kalif Raymond, Nick Westbrook, Chester Rogers and Cody Hollister) in the player pool for this showdown, especially if A.J. Brown has any kind of setback leading up to kickoff.

DO: Use the projected team totals to shade one way or the other with your selections.

DON’T: Sleep on Devin Singletary tonight, especially if he’s paired with the Bills defense. The Bills RB is affordable on both sites, and that’s one build where you don’t necessarily have to plug in Allen, too.

Week 16 Quarterback Cash Game Plays

Russell Wilson, ARI vs SEA

DK ($7,000) FD ($8,300)

Russell Wilson vs Arizona’s defense, that is all. It looks like he is rediscovering a connection with Tyler Lockett, which is key with Josh Gordon being suspended. In his last five games, Wilson is averaging 240 yards. The Cardinals are allowing 306.9 passing yards per game and are still the defense I expect to crumble. Especially with the different playoff situations that could happen, this should be the building block for the Seahawks to win the NFC West.

Lamar Jackson, BAL @ CLE

DK ($8,000) FD ($9,300)

Do I even need to give you numbers for this one? The only reason you could argue this is questioning how long Jackson will be in the game. This Cleveland Browns team has completely given up and are now iffy at best. Lamar had a great game last time these two met as he went for 247 passing yards with three touchdowns and two picks. He also ran nine times for 66 yards. Expect another Lamar Jackson-esque game here.

Dak Prescott, DAL @ PHI

DK ($6,400) FD ($8,000)

His appearance on the injury report and being limited in practice does not scare me in the least. Philadelphia is tied for allowing the seventh-most passing touchdowns to quarterbacks this season. The Eagles also allow a lot of big passing plays with 14 passes of at least 40 yards. The injuries that have stockpiled on their offense will allow Prescott to control the ball. Last week’s annihilation of the Rams also plays a factor in this decision. Expect a solid game and the NFC East clinched here.

Week 16 Quarterback GPP Plays

Matt Ryan, JAX vs ATL

DK ($6,200) FD ($7,700)

Ryan has thrown for multiple touchdowns for the last two games. He also has not thrown an interception in the month of December. The Jacksonville Jaguars are not in a great position with the firing of Tom Coughlin and their defense doesn’t force interceptions as well. Expect a nice outing out of Ryan at a solid price point.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, CIN vs MIA

DK ($6,000) FD ($7,400)

I feel this will bring quite the upside in an otherwise meaningless game that many people will forget about. Cincinnati locks in the first overall pick in 2020 with the loss so I wouldn’t be shocked if the call from above is to lose. Obviously, players don’t care about tanking and will play regardless. FitzMagic should be in full effect and pick up a fourth consecutive solid outing against weak opponents. He could make your quarterback skill position a lot stronger with him in your DFS lineup.

Drew Brees, NO @ TEN

DK ($ 6,900) FD ($8,200)

Coming off one of the single greatest performances by a quarterback, Drew Brees is going up against the Tennessee Titans. Still competing for the number one seed, Brees will still be competing at the highest level. The Titans allow 258.1 passing yards per game and that is the eighth-highest in the NFL. Expect a great game out of Brees, which isn’t such a difficult thought.

Week 16 Quarterback Fades

Josh Allen, BUF @ NE

DK ($5,300) FD ($7,600)

In his last game against the Pats, he went 13-of-28 with 153 yards and three interceptions. Bill Belichick has a way of making opposing quarterbacks feel uncomfortable and with a solid defense, don’t expect a big return with Josh Allen under center for your NFL DFS team.

Tom Brady, BUF vs NE

DK ($5,200) FD ($7,400)

This Patriots offense is not threatening, especially going against an elite Buffalo defense that is mathematically still alive for the AFC East divisional title. The Patriots have struggled against speedy defenses this season and Buffalo is another one of those. It’s hard to see the Pats having a chance to run the ball. Brady also went 18-of-39 for 150 yards and a pick last time these two teams faced off. Don’t try to get too cute with your quarterback selection here.

Derek Carr, OAK @ LAC

DK ($5,300) FD ($7,300)

With the news that Josh Jacobs will not play in this game, I don’t see the Raiders running the ball as much. Carr is an average quarterback and when a defense can suspect the pass, it probably won’t be a great outing for Carr. The Chargers pass defense is already elite without the help as they allow just 197.4 passing yards a game, which is fourth in the NFL. With all the signs pointing against Derek Carr, it makes sense to fade him in this matchup.

Patrick Mahomes over 290.5 passing yards and Mitchell Trubisky under 241.5 passing yards.

Pat Mahomes is going against an injury-plagued Chicago Bears defense. Coming off a great game against the Denver Broncos, Mahomes had 340 yards through the air. I expect another 300+ yard passing game out of Mahomes. Trubisky, on the other hand, has big yardage days but I see the Chiefs dominating the time of possession in this game. Trubisky is turnover-prone so he won’t have the opportunity to put up these types of numbers.

Week 15 Quarterback Cash Game Plays

Jimmy Garoppolo, ATL vs SF

DK ($5,600) FD ($8,400)

He is coming off of one of his best games as a starting quarterback and the Falcons defense shouldn’t cause issues. Atlanta is allowing a 100.3 passer rating this season, which is the seventh-highest in the NFL. Garoppolo is playing with solid receivers that will create separation. With the 49ers still trying to win the NFC West, they should be ready while the Falcons are eliminated from playoff contention. Even with a backup center for the remainder of the season, Garoppolo should still have a solid game.

Tom Brady, NE @ CIN

DK ($6,100) FD ($7,600)

This should be the bounce-back week for the Patriots offense in general as they travel to Cincinnati. The Bengals have allowed just 16 passing touchdowns so don’t expect the huge total from Brady. However, he doesn’t turn the ball over often and is a cheaper option on the slate. The Bengals allow 64 percent of passes to be completed so expect Brady’s accuracy to increase from where it has been the previous month. Expect a nice rebound game against a team poised to have the first pick in the NFL Draft.

Aaron Rodgers, CHI vs GB

DK ($6,800) FD ($8,000)

This game is completely different than when these two teams met to open up the season. The Chicago Bears are dealing with injuries across the defense with Roquan Smith being placed on IR as well as Prince Amukamara and Danny Trevathan potentially missing this game. Aaron Rodgers should dominate a depleted defense and this Bears team has given up at least 275 passing yards to opposing quarterbacks in the last three games. Aaron Rodgers is completing 64.3 percent of his passes this season and only threw two interceptions so far. Expect Rodgers to continue playing well and get closer to locking up the NFC North.

Week 15 Quarterback GPP Plays

Jameis Winston, TB @ DET

DK ($6,900) FD ($8,200)

Winston had a great statistical game passing the ball last week against the Indianapolis Colts without Mike Evans. Evans is currently doubtful for this matchup as of this writing. Tampa ranks second in passing yards per game and the Lions allow the third-most passing yards in the league. I do not see a situation where Detroit can stop Jameis, all they can do is hope he coughs up the football multiple times.

Baker Mayfield, CLE @ ARI

DK ($6,400) FD ($7,700)

Not sure if I am pro-Baker or anti-Arizona this week. Baker should feast against this Arizona defense that is the worst at passing defense. They allow the most yards per game, touchdowns and best passer rating in the league. Baker is completing under 60 percent of his passes this season but this should be the return to last year’s version of Mayfield with a soft opposing defense. The Browns somehow have a chance to still make the playoffs and need this win, so expect Baker to come out with a lot of emotion.

Russell Wilson, SEA @ CAR

DK ($ 7,000) FD ($8,100)

Carolina is still trying to find out their identity as the season is reaching its end. Their pass rush is one of the best in the league with the second-most sacks. However, Carolina has two of their DE on the injury report. Expect Wilson to have his usual game as the running game will set him up for some big plays.

Week 15 Quarterback Fades

Mitch Trubisky, CHI @ GB

DK ($,6000) FD ($7,500)

The Packers are a different team at home than they are on the road. Green Bay’s defense has 13 interceptions on the year and Tribusky is prone to mistakes. The Packers are trying to lock up this division and defeating the Bears could eliminate Chicago from the playoffs. Expect the Green Bay defense to lock down Tribusky and turn him back into a pumpkin.

Andy Dalton, CIN @ NE

DK ($4,900) FD ($7,000)

Bill Belichick will shut down Andy Dalton, plain and simple. Dalton has had a solid couple games since being renamed the starting quarterback but that was against the Jets and Browns. The Patriot defense struggles against speedy teams and the Bengals do not have much speed. Expect this to get ugly early and potentially see Dalton pulled late.

Josh Allen, BUF @ PIT

DK ($6,000) FD ($7,600)

Buffalo has two of their offensive tackles on the injury report, which is a little concerning. Pittsburgh’s passing defense is one of the best in football with the most sacks, fifth-least passing yards, and 18 interceptions. Allen has been good this year but the Bills offense has stuttered at times this season and against an elite defense is prone to do so again in primetime.

Atlanta is allowing 258.2 passing yards per game and this is the time for Garoppolo to sling the football. Atlanta stops the run well so look for a large number of passing attempts and Jimmy G should finish with 300+ yards. San Francisco is coming off their worst pass-defending games in a shootout with the New Orleans Saints. However, the Falcons do not have nearly the amount of weapons that the Saints did. The 49ers also rank first in pass defense this season so Matt Ryan should easily hit the under.

Week 12 Quarterback Cash Game Plays

Russell Wilson, SEA @ PHI

DK ($6,800) FD ($8,200)

Russell Wilson is dominating so far this season and is one of the MVP favorites. Wilson is averaging 274 yards through the air and Philadelphia is one of the middle-area passing defenses. The Eagles’ secondary is full of question marks and Wilson leads the league in touchdown passes (23) and tied for the lowest amount of interceptions by a starting quarterback (2). The Eagles are great against the run so expect Wilson to have an increased amount of attempts and continue dominating opposing defenses.

Kyle Allen, CAR @ NO

DK ($5,200) FD ($6,600)

Coming off of his worst game as a professional, Kyle Allen is looking for retribution. He already has a solid performance against the Saints from 2018. The Saints this season have been vulnerable to deep passes as they have given up eight passes of 40+ yards. Expect around 285 yards and a couple of touchdowns for Allen with the threat of Christian McCaffrey in the backfield taking up most of the defensive attention.

Jeff Driskel, DET @ WAS

DK ($5,500) FD ($7,300)

Jeff Driskel has played great in his two games this season against Chicago and Dallas. Going up against a subpar defense, Driskel should be the quarterback you target the most. Washington allows opposing quarterbacks 71.4 percent of passes, which leads the NFL. They also struggle to get to the quarterback as they are tied for the eighth-fewest sacks.

Week 12 Quarterback GPP Plays

Baker Mayfield, MIA vs CLE

DK ($5,900) FD ($7,500)

Baker Mayfield should have a field day against the Miami Dolphins. He has been heating up since Week 8. The Dolphins have just 13 sacks this season and have given up 23 passing touchdowns so far this season. Expect Mayfield to have upper-20s in completions with a lot of yardage. This should be the game that Odell Beckham Jr and Jarvis Landry both have great games, which makes Baker even more intriguing.

Drew Brees, NO @ CAR

DK ($6,600) FD ($8,500)

In the three games since returning from his injury, Brees is averaging 296 yards with six touchdowns. The Carolina Panthers are a middle-tier passing defense ranking in the low-teens in important statistical categories. With the weapons that Drew Brees has at his disposal, expect another huge statistical game with 30-plus completions.

Matt Ryan, TB vs ATL

DK ($6,700) FD ($7,900)

Ryan is averaging 27 completions and 296 yards through the air. Tampa Bay’s passing defense isn’t good either as they give up the third-most completions and the second-most yards per game at 290.9. His 7.6 yards per attempt is also a huge reason why he should be in your lineup. The passing game of Atlanta with the subpar passing defense of Tampa has all the stars aligning for Matty Ice.

Week 12 Quarterback Fades

Josh Allen, DEN vs BUF

DK ($6,400) FD ($7,800)

Josh Allen isn’t a productive quarterback so far this season, with a 60.3 completion percentage. That ranks him tied for 42nd of all quarterbacks to have a pass attempt this season. Being behind Andy Dalton, Eli Manning and Mitchell Triubisky is not a good sign of accuracy. The Denver Broncos allows the fifth-fewest passing yards at 210 yards per game. He can have a decent game but nothing special, especially for the price Allen is demanding. He doesn’t turn the ball over but isn’t accurate enough to be on your DFS team.

Mitchell Trubisky, NYG vs CHI

DK ($5,100) FD ($7,000)

Trubisky’s price is low enough where I feel he could be a value option but my head is saying no chance. His season-high is 253 yards, which is pedestrian in today’s NFL. The New York Giants are coming off their bye week and the Bears will look to run the ball often as they run 40 percent of their plays. Too much of a risk to take Trubisky on this slate.

Tom Brady, DAL vs NE

DK ($6,000) FD ($7,700)

Tom Brady is not having a great year, especially by his own standards. He has not reached 300 yards passing since Week 6. He looked lost at times against the Philadelphia Eagles last week and the Dallas Cowboys have a better defense. Wide receivers Mohamed Sanu and Phillip Dorsett look as if they will be ready for the game on Sunday, which limits how well he can do without many threats.

Matt Ryan over 304.5 yards and Jameis Winston under 300.5 yards

Matt Ryan is averaging 296 yards per game and the Buccaneers have the second-worst passing defense in the NFL. Jameis Winston is coming off an ankle sprain and the Atlanta Falcons give up 107 yards on the ground. It’s difficult to see Tampa not run the ball, especially with how they average 31 minutes on offense a game.

11/18 Win Daily DFS Winner: Josh Allen

Both guys had Josh Allen as a value quarterback pick on the NFL DraftKings Cheatsheet and it paid off. Going up against the Miami Dolphins (who are somehow on a winning streak), Allen went 21-of-33 for 256 yards and three touchdowns through the air. He also rushed seven times for 56 additional yards and another touchdown

Outlook for the rest of the season: This is the fifth straight game for Josh Allen without throwing an interception. Before this streak, Allen had gone just two consecutive games without throwing one. He also posted a 117.7 passer rating, which is a career-high for him. Josh Allen seems to be maturing in his second year in the NFL and is getting ready to play important games down the stretch. Don’t expect these types of games, but something a step down from this performance.

11/18 DFS Winner: Jamal Murray

Here is the NBA DFS Sunday Night Positional Breakdown article by Brandon C. Williams. Murray had a solid game against the Memphis Grizzlies as he went for 39 points, four rebounds, eight assists, three steals, and a block. He had a great game from the field as he went 14-for-24 and 7-for-12 from the three-point line.

Outlook for the rest of the season: Jamal Murray is having a solid start to the season with 19.2 points a night. He doesn’t need to be alpha male as the Nuggets have Nikola Jokic looking better. Murray needed this game after a terrible game against the Brooklyn Nets. Expect him to play close to this throughout the season but expecting 24 shots a night seems like a stretch.

Quarterbacks:

Stud Quarterback: Matthew Stafford ($7,900 FD)

I don’t typically like Stafford on the road, but the matchup is just too good. The Raiders are tied with the Falcons for second most receiving touchdowns given up this year. They have allowed 285 yards per game to wideouts. They also average a very high 8.6 yards per catch allowed. Stafford has been sharp lately, throwing seven touchdowns in the last two games. Factor in that the Lions run game does not exist, so the Detroit coaching staff is going to ask Stafford to do more with his arm. We could see another three touchdown game out of Stafford and I wouldn’t be surprised. Make sure to stack him with one of his receiving options in your NFL DFS contests.

Stud Pivots: Aaron Rodgers, Jameis Winston (He does have the two highest priced receivers on the slate, that’s a good sign), Kirk Cousins, Josh Allen

Value Quarterback: Mitchell Trubisky ($6,500 FD)

Here we go… This guy is getting absolutely trashed for a bad game last week. They are literally burning his jersey in the street in Chicago. This is a massive overreaction in my opinion. The Bears are not going to bench Trubisky, in fact quite the opposite. They are going to let this guy get through the good times and the bad times on the field. I know that Coach Nagy has commented that Trubisky needs to figure it out fast or they will have to make some tough decisions, but I am not that worried. Trubisky is feeling the heat this week and if he ever needs to bust out of a slump it is this Sunday. So why do I like him? His price is way too low for starters. He also gets to go against one of the worst pass defenses in the league in the Eagles.

Two games ago Trubisky put up 251 yards and two touchdowns against a stout Saints defense. Two games before that’s he threw for three touchdowns against the Redskins. He can produce. Just because he didn’t find the end zone last week are we supposed to think he will never throw a touchdown again? Of course not. He has capable receivers in Allen Robinson, Anthony Miller, Taylor Gabriel and even Tarik Cohen. Is this a safe play? No, it is not. Is it a great GPP play? Yes, it is! If Mitchell can get us 20 points (I think he does) then we are in prime position to make big bucks in NFL DFS this Sunday.

Value QB Pivots: Derek Carr

Running Backs

Stud RB: Christian McCaffrey ($9,700 FD)

Do I even need to write this guy up? He just put up 25 FanDuel points on the one of, if not the best, defenses in the league. He is basically the entire offense and I think he wins MVP this year (sorry Russell Wilson). He will get all the rush attempts he can handle and also be targeted like a WR1. The Titans have a decent defense, but not anywhere close to what he just faced in San Fransisco. CMC already has 10 touchdowns in just seven games. He is the number one running back you should target every week in NFL DFS.

Stud Pivots: Dalvin Cook (LOVE HIM vs KC, RB1B this week to CMC), Nick Chubb

Mid RB: Derrick Henry ($6,800 FD)

The Carolina Panthers have given up a league high 12 rushing touchdowns this season (Tevin Coleman helped boost that number last Sunday). Derrick Henry does not split time and is an absolute monster when he gets the ball. He should be the first guy the Titans give the pigskin to in the Red Zone and I don’t think the Panthers are going to be able to stop him. I am predicting Henry for over 100 yards and two touchdowns. At $6,800 on FanDuel he is a NFL DFS bargain.

UPDATE: Lock in Jaylen Samuels at $5,000 on FD

Pivots: Le’Veon Bell, Austin Ekeler, Jordan Howard

Note: Phillip Lindsay popped up with wrist injury, so if he were to miss the game Royce Freeman is a good play

Note: Aaron Jones has a shoulder injury, if he is out lock in Jamaal Williams

Wide Receiver

Stud WR: Chris Godwin ($8,200 FD)

He has an elite matchup against a bad Seattle secondary. Last week he let us down, but still had eight points (which doesn’t kill you in cash games). The three weeks before that he got 20, 28, 35 FanDuel points and won a lot of us a lot of money. Jameis Winston should have to throw it here (because I expect them to be playing from behind) and the NFL DFS sites have adjusted the Bucs receivers accordingly. This week Chris Godwin leads the Bucs receiving core with over 100 yards and a touchdown. He has not had two consecutive games under ten fantasy points this year and I don’t expect that trend to end against the Seahawks, who give up and average of 273 receiving yards a game.

Stud Pivots: Mike Evans, Kenny Golladay, Tyler Lockett

Mid WR: Allen Robinson ($7,200 FD)

He is far and away the number one offensive option for the Bears. He has not been targeted under seven times the entire season. I would lock him in cash games and play him in GPPs for his high ceiling against the terrible Eagles defense. They tried to make trades to improve their corners on Tuesday but couldn’t get anyone to bite, which means they are going to be bad the rest of the season. With Mitchell Tribusky feeling the heat in Chicago he is going to highly target his best guy. Love him in NFL DFS this week.

Mid WR Pivots: Alshon Jeffrey, Tyrell Williams, Robby Anderson, John Brown

Value WR: Robby Anderson ($6,200 FD)

It feels like a Robby Anderson week. I called the last one on the Win Daily podcast and I am doing it again here. The South Florida native returns to Miami as the number one deep threat for the New York Jets. We all know the Dolphins are the worst defense in the league and targeting them every single week has worked all season, so why would we stop now? The was to attack them is through the air, not so much on the ground. Robby is a boom or bust guy and could have a bad game if Sam Darnold sees any more spooky ghosts on the field, however I think he can man up and launch a few deep to Anderson against a team that literally wants to lose. I will punt Anderson at a “friends and family” game in Miami in my NFL DFS lineups.

Tight End:

Darren Waller ($6,800 FD)

He is the most targeted tight end in the NFL and gets a nice matchup against the Lions (ranked 23rd against the TE) at home. He is extraordinarly safe with high upside.

Tight End Pivots: Hunter Henry, T.J. Hockenson, Cameron Brate (if OJ Howard out)

Defense

Bills
Colts (would like clarification on Steelers RB injuries before I lock them in)
Browns (they are not good, but they get to face Brandon Allen at QB)

Matt Stafford is my favorite quarterback this week so of course I think he gets over 300 yards here (See my write up above). I know Carr has been efficient this season but 275 is a tall order for a guy I don’t have much trust in.
