Welcome to the NASCAR DFS Pit Stop for Sunday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 from Texas Motor Speedway where the only thing hotter than Kevin Harvick is the temperature inside the cars! We saw temps reach at least 143 degrees in the Xfinity cars on Saturday afternoon, which was run during the same time Sunday’s Cup race will be run.

With 500 miles being raced on Sunday at the mile and a half track, we get 334 laps of racing leading to a possible 250.5 dominator points available. Last year Harvick led 119 on his way to the victory, followed by teammate Aric Almirola who led 62 laps and finished 2nd. Almirola is on the pole for this race and at first glance seemed like a fade to me, but he has done well here in his last 3 races and could get himself another top 5 finish.

NASCAR DFS: Dominators

Kevin Harvick (11,300)

Starting Position: 5th

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Kevin Harvick has been great in recent races here at Texas Motorspeedway. Harvick is one of, if not, the hottest drivers in the Cup Series since the return to the track and will look to keep his momentum going on Sunday. Over the last 5 races at Texas, Harvick has 3 wins, and five top 10 finishes. Harvick has not just won races here, he has dominated with 421 laps led during his last 5 races here.

Martin Truex Jr. ($10,400)

Starting Position: 10th

Truex hasn’t had his best season so far, but he does have three top 10’s in his last 4 races (4 in 5 if you count the All Start Race) and looks like he is getting back on track. We have seen him fail tech twice over the last few weeks but while he didn’t fare well in Indianapolis when he was sent to the back, he came home second at Kentucky last week. After the race last week Truex said he thinks his team has figured out and they will be better moving forward.

Joey Logano ($9,500)

Starting Position: 9th

Dating all the way back to 2013 Joey Logano has been an absolute beast at Texas Motorspeedway. In 14 races here since 2013, Logano has finished in the top 10 eleven times, and top 5 nine times. Logano has led 418 laps during that same 14 race span and should compete for a top 5, and the win on Sunday.

Other Options: Denny Hamlin ($10,800 – P8), Chase Elliott ($10,000 – P8)

NASCAR DFS: Mid Tier

Christopher Bell ($9,100)

Starting Position: 33rd

DraftKings finally decided to price Bell more accurately this week, meaning he will most likely be higher owned because of this but he could be the highest DKFP driver. Bell hasn’t raced here yet in the Cup Series but was dominant here in the Xfinity series. In 5 races here as an Xfinity Series driver, Bell has a win, three top 5’s, and a four top 10’s.

Erik Jones ($8,600)

Starting Position: 23rd

I am hesitant to play Erik Jones after the way he has hurt us the past couple of weeks, but here I am. Over his last 5 races in Texas, Jones has five top 10’s and three top 5’s. Jones has also led 103 laps in his last 5 here as well, and with his starting position, we don’t even need a top 10 from Jones to make 5 times value.

Aric Almirola ($8,100)

Starting Position: 1st

Almirola is a GPP only play since he is starting on the pole on Sunday. Almirola has been on a tear recently, and while we don’t necessarily look at the current form in season when gauging interest in drivers, Almirola has success at Texas as well lately. The driver of the #10 Ford Mustang has three straight top 10’s finishes here at Texas. If Almirola can get the jump on Ryan Blaney ($8,900P2) on the first lap he could end up adding to his laps led count for 2020 on 1.5-mile tracks where he currently has led 128 laps in 6 races

Tyler Reddick ($7,800)

Starting Position: 24th

This season Reddick has run very well at 1.5-mile tracks in 2020. In 6 races on these tracks, Reddick has an average finish of 11.7 and has three top 10’s. Reddick can make value (5x – 43 points) if he finishes around 15th place with no dominator points, which is easily doable.

Other Options: Jimmie Johnson ($9,000 – P20), Ryan Blaney ($8,900 – P2), William Byron ($8,000 – P18)

NASCAR DFS: Value Tier

Both Austin ($6,900 – 21) and Ty Dillon ($6,700 – P30) in good spots to pick up a few spots and give us some minimal place differential points at the top of the value tier. Michael McDowell ($6,600 – P34) might be the best of the value tier for this race. McDowell starts 34th and has been averaging a finish of 23.7 on 1.5-mile tracks this season.

Value Tier Rankings:

  1. Michael McDowell ($6,600 – P34)
  2. Austin Dillon ($6,900 – P21)
  3. John Hunter Nemechek ($6,000 – P28)
  4. Ty Dillon ($6,700 – P30)
  5. Corey Lajoie ($6,100 – P36)
  6. Chris Buescher ($5,800 – P16)

We move to Miami this week for the Dixie Vodka 400 at HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY This is another 1.5 mile track that has been racing since 1995. Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch are the only active, multiple winners of this event with two each, but several drivers have tasted victory. Roush-Fenway Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing lead all owners with 7 wins each, and Ford leads manufactures with 8 wins as Toyota and Chevrolet each have 5.

Once again we had no qualifying and the starting positions were drawn using owner’s points. I am really getting tired of this format as you can’t get a sense of a driver’s speed with out seeing them on the track. I still think caution is the best plan of attack until we get back to normal, but if your using max lineups, this is not as important.

Starting Grid Rules

Denny Hamlin is on the pole this week with Joey Logano also in the front row. The Starting Grid is again littered with dominators due to the qualifying rules. This made it hard to find value this week and you must have the 2 top dominators in your lineup to make real money.

Starting Grid for the Dixie Vodka 400

My top DFS plays at each price tier this week are listed below. I am currently at 20 lineups, but I most likely add a couple as the day goes along using the same core.

NASCAR DFS High-Priced | DraftKings

  1. Denny Hamlin $10,400
  2. Chase Elliott $11.000
  3. Joey Logano $10,700

NASCAR DFS Mid-Tier | DraftKings

  1. Christopher Bell $9,300
  2. William Byron $7,800
  3. Matt DiBenedetto $8,000

NASCAR DFS Value Plays | DraftKings

  1. Michael McDowell $5,200
  2. Ty Dillon $6,700
  3. Cole Custer $6,000

Here is my Driver Usage for Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 400

My Driver Usage for the Dixie Vodka 400

I also like 4 plays to win the race. I have Denny Hamlin slightly over Chase Elliott for the WIN, and I am using 2 other value plays.

I am on more plays to finish in the Top 3, Top 10 and three of the driver match ups.

Pain Relief 500 picks.

Join us in the #nascar Discord channel to discuss your Pain Relief 500 picks. The following is intended for FanDuel GPP purposes only.

Follow Josh on twitter at @dfs_noshame.

THE SLATE

NASCAR Cup Series is back today with the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia. Lock for this slate is at 7 p.m ET.

This race is 263-miles, or 500-laps on this 0.526-mile race track.

Leaving more than $200 of salary remaining will increases your chances of creating a unique lineup. Be sure to include the race winner in your lineup, drivers that finish on the lead lap, drivers that have positive place differential, and capture laps led points.

FRONTRUNNERS

Martin Truex Jr. – Truex won the fall 2019 race at Martinsville while leading 464-laps. Truex has the ability to win this race and capture a significant portion of laps led, if he has a performance similar to last fall.

Brad Keselowski – Keselowski won the spring 2019 race at Martinsville and finished 3rd in the fall race. Starting 6th, Keselowski has the momentum and the ability to battle Truex for the checkered flag.

Additional options: Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Chase Elliott, Kyle Busch

CAPTURE THE UPSIDE

Austin Dillon – Dillon provides salary relief at $7,300 and place differential upside starting 22nd. In the last three races, Dillon has finished 11th, 6th, and 8th, and Dillon finished 11th in the spring 2019 race at Martinsville.

Additional options: Bubba Wallace, Cole Custer, Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Michael McDowell

DEEP PUNTS

Avoid rostering any of the following non-lead lappers: Garrett Smithley, JJ Yeley, Reed Sorenson, Timmy Hill, Joey Gase, Brennan Poole, Quinn Houff, and David Starr.

NASCAR moves to the Bristol Motor Speedway tomorrow for The Supermarket Heroes 500. This half mile track has given me fits in DFS, but I have had a good run at picking the winners. This week will be very tricky on DrafKings as the pricing and starting lineup is very difficult and true to normal form. Brad Keselowski will be on the pole with Almirola at his side. The top 10 is full of drivers who can take this down and is led by Kyle Busch in the 7th spot who has won at Bristol 8 times.

The Supermarket Heroes 500 Starting Lineup

Joe Gibbs has dominated taking 4 of the last 5 races, and 5 of the last 9 with Toyota. Chevrolet has 3 wins in the last 10 with Jimmie Johnson winning 2 of them. Brad Keselowski and Matt Kenseth are the only other active drivers with a win in the last 10 races.

Winners of the last 10 Food City 500 Races at Bristol

My top DFS plays at each price tier this week are listed below. I am all about those who have had success at this track or I believe can be a dominator. My final Driver Usage will be posted on Twitter Sunday, but my top plays are below.

NASCAR DFS High-Priced | DraftKings

  1. Kyle Busch $12,500
  2. Jimmie Johnson $10,200
  3. Brad Keselowski $9,100

NASCAR DFS Mid-Tier | DraftKings

  1. Kurt Busch $8,300
  2. Ryan Blaney $8,600
  3. Matt Kenseth $8,100

NASCAR DFS Value Plays | DraftKings

  1. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. $7,400
  2. Christopher Bell $7,300
  3. Aric Alirola $6,700

I also like 5 plays to win the race. I am riding Kyle Busch as my pick to win his 3rd Food City 500 in a row this week, but I do like 4 other value plays.

My Picks to WIN at Bristol Sunday

I am also on some plays to finish in the Top 3, Top 5, Top 10, and a couple of driver match ups. 2 units on Kyle Busch and 1 unit on all other plays.

TOP 3 PICKS: Kyle Busch +100; Brad Keselowski +300

TOP 5 PICKS: Kyle Busch -152; Brad Keselowski +170

TOP 10 PICKS: Jimmie Johnson -118, Kurt Busch -137, Ryan Blaney -180

Matchups: Kyle Busch over Chase Elliott -136; Christopher Bell over Austin Dillon +135

The following analysis, DraftKings NASCAR DFS Picks, is intended for DraftKings NASCAR DFS GPP purposes only (Toyota 500 at Darlington – May 20, 2020). The projections below include the official starting positions for each driver.

THE PICKS

JIMMIE JOHNSON ($9,100) – Johnson got to the front of the pack on Sunday, before crashing, and landing him in the 37th starting position for Wednesday. Johnson is projected to finish 12th, and provides significant positive place differential upside. Given the upside, it appears Johnson may be quite chalky, but go ahead and eat the chalk, and move on to your next driver selection.

WILLIAM BYRON ($8,900) – Bryon also found himself in trouble on Sunday, ending his day early, and securing the 34th start position for the Toyota 500. If Byron can remember this is not an iRace, settle in, and log some solid long-run laps – he can provide excellent positive place differential upside. Along with Johnson, Byron will most likely find his way into a lot of line ups Wednesday.

RICKY STENHOUSE JR. ($7,900) – Wrecky Ricky did not make it through the first lap before he ended up in the wall on Sunday, landing him in the 39th start position for the Toyota 500. With minimal downside risk and significant positive place differential upside, it appears Ricky could make it into a lot of lineups for this slate.

KEVIN HARVICK ($11,600) – Harvick won The Real Heroes 400 at Darlington Raceway this past Sunday, landing him in the 20th position to start the Toyota 500. Harvick had the best car on Wednesday, is the favorite to win on Sunday, provides positive place differential upside, and has the ability to lead laps. Plug Harvick in and watch him roll to a victory.

JOEY LOGANO ($9,400) – Logano has a shot at taking the checkered flag every time he fires up the engine. Logano will be starting 3rd with Ty Dillon and Ryan Preece in front of him, giving him a clear path to clean air and laps led. If Logano grabs a bunch of laps led, and finishes in the top five, he will be a great play.

KYLE BUSCH ($12,000) – Kyle Busch is the most expensive driver on the slate; starting 26th and projected to finish second, he’s well-positioned to provide positive place differential points. If you believe Kyle will lead a significant portion of laps, he’s a fine play.

ADDITIONAL OPTIONS

Alex Bowman, Kurt Busch, Erik Jones, Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, Cole Custer, Christopher Bell, Daniel Suarez

Finally we get back to some real NASCAR racing Sunday at Darlington Speedway. This starts a crazy good stretch of seven races is eleven days, but this comes with some negatives. There is no qualifying for this race and the starting grid was based off of owners points in 4 groupings, and a random draw. This will put the cream of the crop at front of the field and will make decisions on value plays critical.

The Real Heroes 400 Starting Grid

NASCAR has been racing at Darlington since 1950 on this 1.366 mile oval. Joe Gibbs (4 wins)(Jones, Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, and Hamlin on his current team) and Toyota (5 wins)(Joe Gibbs Team plus Bell, Suarez, and Hill) have dominated at this track the last 7 races. Only Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin have multiple wins at this track.

Brad Keselowski gained the pole followed by Alex Bowman in the first row. Harvick, Kyle Busch, Logano, and Hamlin are possible dominators in the top ten. I would be shocked if any drivers outside of the top ten make it into the top five without some major crash. My top three picks to possibly break the top five would be Elliott (11th), Byron (18th), and Jones (20th). I am not too thrilled with many outside of the top 20 to make up serious ground, but I would take Newman (21st), Kurt Busch (22nd), and Bell (28th) as my top three. I did have to throw in a few deep value plays just to get some diversity in my lineups, but other than McDowell (31st), T, Dillon (33rd), and Suarez (37th), I do not give many of them any hope to score decent DFS points.

The Real Heroes 400 Top 10 Starting Grid

My top DFS plays at each price tier this week are listed below. I am leaning on those who have had success at this track or I believe can be a dominator. Those qualifying at the rear will be avoided other than to add some diversity in case of any big crashes. My final Driver Usage will be posted on Twitter Sunday, but my top plays are below.

NASCAR DFS High-Priced | DraftKings | FanDuel |

  1. Denny Hamlin $11,100
  2. Joey Logano $10,100
  3. Kyle Busch $11,600

NASCAR DFS Mid-Tier | DraftKings | FanDuel |

  1. Erik Jones $9.200
  2. William Byron $8,700
  3. Kurt Busch $8,500

NASCAR DFS Value Plays | DraftKings | FanDuel |

  1. Ryan Newman $6,500
  2. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. $6,800
  3. Daniel Suarez $6,200

I also like 4 plays on DraftKings Sports Book to win the race. I am riding Denny Hamlin as my pick to win this week, but I do like 3 other value plays.

Want to ask Josh questions about The Real Heroes 400 DFS directly? Follow him on twitter at @dfs_noshame and hop in our discord chat!

The following NASCAR Cup Series – The Real Heroes 400 DFS – Darlington Raceway – 5/17/20 analysis is intended for FanDuel GPP purposes.

1. FRONT RUNNER – JOEY LOGANO (FD-$12,200)

Joey Logano, in the Team Penske Shell Penzoil Ford, will be starting from the 9th position on Sunday. Logano has won two of the four Cup Series races in 2020 and will be in a strong position to take the captured flag again at this track that is, too tough to tame.

Pivots: Denny Hamlin (FD-$12,500), Kyle Busch (FD-$14,000), Kevin Harvick (FD-$14,500), Alex Bowman (FD-$10,600), Brad Keselowski (FD-$12,000)

*Make sure to roster the race winner. A second driver from this category may be rostered if they will capture a significant portion of laps led.

2. CAPTURE THE UPSIDE!

Select drivers that will give you positive place differential points. Consider rostering the following:

CHASE ELLIOTT (FD-$11,700) – Elliott is starting 11th. Elliott has faced some challenges in 2020 capturing the checkered flag, but continues to be ranked third in driver/owner points.

ERIK JONES (FD-$9,800) – Jones is starting 20th. Jones won the last Cup Series race in Darlington, South Carolina (2019 Bojangles’ Southern 500 – September 1, 2019).

KURT BUSCH (FD-$9,400) – Kurt Busch is starting 22nd. Busch logged 65-fastest laps on his way to a 7th place finish last time out at Darlington.

WILLIAM BYRON (FD-$9,000) – Byron is starting 18th. Byron finished 21st last time out at Darlington, but started on the pole. The combination of Bryon and crew chief Chad Knaus, seems to make Byron a great option to capture the upside.

MARTIN TRUEX (FD-$11,500) – Truex is starting 15th. Truex may be the fifth-best driver after Logano, Busch, Hamlin, and Harvick, but has yet to see a top-10 finish in 2020. The starting position makes Truex attractive, but roster this driver with caution.

TYLER REDDICK (FD-$6,600) – Reddick, a teammate of Austin Dillon, is starting 29th. Reddick has an excellent history in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and looks to continue to excel in his rookie year as a Cup driver.

RYAN NEWMAN (FD-$7,000) – Newman is starting 21st. If nothing else, who does not want to see Newman fighting for the win on Sunday. Newman offers great upside, but roster with caution.

3. DEEP PUNTS

Look towards a balanced build this week for The Real Heroes 400, and roster drivers that will finish on the lead lap. Consider avoiding drivers Timmy Hill, Joey Gase, Quin Houff, Reed Sorenson, and Garrett Smithley that have not finished on the lead lap in a 2020 NASCAR Cup Series race.

Shockingly, the world of sports, other than MMA and some Soccer, has shut down due to the Coronavirus. This is a good time to reflect and analyze what has worked in the past and tweak where needed to hit the ground running when everything returns. For NASCAR DFS, the preparation and execution of lineups with potential to WIN GPP’s is priority number one.

There are 3 approaches I use in NASCAR DFS depending on my confidence that week and the bankroll I am willing to put at risk. I love to attack the superspeedways like Talledega, Michigan, Pocono, and Daytona. I get very aggressive on these tracks and will throw in 150 plus lineups most weeks. Next for me are the 1.0-1.5 mile tracks, especially those that a dominator can crush. Finally, I tend to avoid very short tracks like Bristol or Martinsville and any road courses. These are just my personal preferences after analyzing years of results.

Win Daily Sports is committed to bringing its members and subscribers fresh content daily for as long as the professional sports leagues remain on hiatus. Our goal is to continue to focus on how to be better DFS and Sports Gamblers by teaching you how to do the little things better just like the pros. Sign up at this link and stay prepared!

Now that my home state of Michigan has opened sportsbooks, I will be playing many more WIN bets and hopefully “Top-5” and Driver Matchups depending on what is offered. This is where I excel. The Westgate Super Book in Las Vegas is where I have made most of my profit over the years betting 4 driver matchups that could also be parlayed. I can only hope Detroit will follow suit with some encouragement.

As for NASCAR DFS, my #1 look is always towards past performances at that track. If I can latch onto a Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, or Joey Logano who dominates a track, I will do so especially if they qualify near the top. I have no problem being 75% plus owned on a dominator. My next look is at the practice sessions. My thought the process is first done they have speed and second, can they maintain that speed over a number of laps.

I will put the practice session in the back of my mind as I watch qualifying. Obviously, if a potential dominator qualifies badly or is forced to the back for an issue, they instantly become chalk. You cannot avoid this. It just becomes a 5 player contest instead of 6 on DraftKings when this occurs. At times I have had the same 2 drivers in over 75% of my lineups if we have a situation with a dominator at the front and back of the starting grid.

Once qualifying has ended, I then rank the entire field based on potential and value. I personally like to create lineups by hand one at a time and check my driver usage along the way to make sure it matches my rankings. I can usually do this up to 40-50 lineups. If I am going for it that week, I will use an optimizer, entering my personal usage percentages from my ranking. While I do read a lot of articles during the week, especially from experts at the track that week, I am confident enough to override others’ opinions for my own. Many times, my driver usage is vastly different from what you will see in NASCAR GPP’s.

The key is to WIN a contest. Usually, you are splitting the top prize, but it can still pay off very well. Hitting the nuts or playing small field single or small MAX contests are the only way to make money. Diversity and aggressiveness have worked well for me, especially at the superspeedways.

The NASCAR Daytona 500 did not go exactly to plan, as avoiding the “Big One” is very difficult. At times, I was up 4x-5x, but I ended up slightly down after those last 2 crashes. I probably should have play 150 plus lineups. Hamlin had the best car and deserved the win.

NASCAR heads to Las Vegas for the Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube. This is a 1.5 mile oval that is running this race for the 23rd time. Jimmie Johnson has won this race 4 times, which is two more than Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick who are the only other multiple winners. Joey Logano won last year’s edition and is joined by Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch as the other one-time winners in this year’s field. Keselowski and Truex Jr. also have won on this track in the South Point 400 run in September the last two years.

The practice sessions heading into qualifying were interesting as 2 Ford’s driven by Aric Almirola and Clint Bowyer was in the top three of both sessions. Jimmie Johnson led the 2nd practice with a speed of 179.432 which topped the day. Bowman, DiBenedetto, Larson, and Blaney were the others who were in the top 10 of both sessions. Ross Chastain also looked good driving the #6 to a 6th place finish in session #2 replacing Ryan Newman.

Saturday’s qualifying was canceled due to rain which put Kyle Busch on the pole followed by Truex Jr., Harvick, and Hamlin in the first 2 rows. All the power players on top leaves values play at a minimum. I will lean on those who did well in practice or have had decent success in Las Vegas. Kyle Busch, Hamlin, and Bell will start from the back of the field but will be scored on their starting position. This makes them difficult plays unless you’re looking to be contrarian.

Starting Grid

My top DFS plays at each price tier this week are listed below. I was very torn on how strong to play my top picks. I decided to play hard on those I thought could dominate in laps led and position differential.

NASCAR DFS High-Priced

  1. Kevin Harvick $12,000
  2. Brad Keselowski $11,100
  3. Martin Truex Jr. $11,600

NASCAR DFS Mid-Tier

  1. Clint Bowyer $8,000
  2. Aric Almirola $7,800
  3. Jimmie Johnson $8,400

NASCAR DFS Value Plays

  1. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. $7,600
  2. Daniel Suarez $6,000
  3. Ross Chastain $6,100

I am working on all of my lineups currently and will be posting these on twitter either later tonight or early Sunday AM on twitter.

I also like 7 plays on DraftKings Sports Book to win the race. My #1 pick would be Clint Bowyer at 25/1, but I think there is value with the other plays too.

The NASCAR field is finally set for the 62nd Daytona 500 this Sunday. The 2 Bluegreen Vacations duel races on Thursday help set the starting lineup. The first Duel race was won by Joey Logano who led 19 laps. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. continued his good showing at Daytona with 27 led laps and an 8th place finish. Only Daniel Suarez was not running at the end after his crash. The 2nd Duel race was won by William Byron. Kevin Harvick led the most laps at 34 and finished 4th followed by 12 laps led by Alex Bowman who was the pole-sitter but finished 15th. As with the first duel, only one driver J.J Yeley was off the grid at the finish after the accident.

Based on the finishes in the Duel races, we are going to have some chalk in DFS Sunday. Stenhouse Jr. leads everyone on the pole followed by Bowman and Duel Winners Logano and Byron.

Friday’s practice was lead by William Byron followed by Ryan Preece and Chase Elliott as Chevrolet dominated taking the top 7 spots for top speed. On Saturday, Joey Logano leads the afternoon practice session as Ford dominated.

Kyle Busch is going to be the top chalk starting in the 28th position. Hamlin 21st, Blaney 27th, and Elliott 25th will also be very highly owned. Only Bowman 2nd and Logano 3rd intrigue me at the top. I see Logano winning this race and leading the most laps. Kyle Busch and Hamlin would be my next 2 choices for top DFS point-getters.
