Welcome to Between the Benches, where I’ll go through the top NHL DFS Goalies and Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel.

It’s Tuesday and for those that follow the hockey schedule, you know this means we have a massive slate on our hands.  While all NHL teams are in action tonight, we are blessed with 26 teams playing on tonight’s main slate.  We’ll have plenty of options to stack, pick a goalie, and also some great value defensemen that will open up salary to get our favorite stacks.

Let’s dig in and make some money!

NHL DFS Goalies

Filip Gustavsson vs. Edmonton Oilers

We should see our good ole friend Filip  Gustavsson in between the pipes tonight for the Minnesota Wild.  So far this season we’ve seen a little bit of everything from Gustavsson.  We’ve seen a 41-save shutout, a game where he gave up 7 goals and a game where he got the OT loss while also giving up 5 goals.  So yeah, we’ve seen polar opposite performances from him in the young season.  I really like this spot for him though this evening.

He’ll be facing off against an Edmonton team that will be with their star, Connor McDavid.  That puts a huge dent into the offensive power that the Oilers can possess.  If we look past the top line of Edmonton, they have little that should scare us.  Look for Gusty to rebound tonight and bring back some of that opening-night magic. He’s also only $7.9 on DK.

Igor Shesterkin vs. Calgary Flames

Another goalie that has seen some inconsistent play this season is Igor Shesterkin.  He’s put together 2 gems and 2 duds.  With a date against the Calgary Flames tonight, I like his chances of returning to the glory land that saw him put up 21 DK points vs. the Coyotes and 19 vs. Buffalo.  He’s one of the top goaltenders in the league and I fully expect him to have a monster night as the Rangers continue their swing through the North West corner of North America.

We can rarely get a goalie of Shesterkin’s magnitude for less than $8k on DK, and that’s what we’re going to be dealing with tonight as his price is just $7.9k.  I’ll take my chances with Shesty as the Flames are scoring less than 3 goals per game on the young season.

Other goalies: Ilya Sorokin ($7.3k on DK) and Anthony Solarz ($8.2k on DK)

NHL DFS Stacks – Main

Florida 1 (Aleksander Barkov, Evan Rodrigues, Sam Reinhart) vs. San Jose Sharks

The Florida Panthers get the advantage of not only playing at home tonight but also playing against the winless San Jose Sharks.  The Sharks have so far been a mess this season, losing 4 of their first 5 games.  The only point they have so far is thanks to an OT loss.  They have struggled both on offense and defense as they are scoring just 1.4 goals per game and allowing nearly 4 goals per game.  Most importantly, they are giving up a ton of high-danger chances at 18 per game.  It’s going to be tough to win games when you are giving up that many high-danger chances.  In net for the Sharks will be Mackenzie Blackwood who has been awful to start the year as he has a GAA of 3.89.

My love for this line starts with Sam Reinhart.  Reinhart has been playing some amazing hockey to start the season.  He’s scored a goal in 4 of his team’s first 5 games and has essentially been shooting at will as he has been averaging nearly 4 shots on goal per game.  Having him paired with Barkov this season has been a blessing for him.

Speaking of Barkov, while he’s only found the back of the net once so far this season he does have 6 helpers for the team lead.  Look for this line to dominate tonight and for Reinhart to continue his exceptional play to start the year.  Can he make it 5 straight games with at least 20 DK points?  I sure hope so because he’ll be a lock in my lineups tonight.

Detroit 1 (Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond) vs. Seattle Kraken

The Detroit Red Wings offense has started out the season on absolute fire. Through their first 6 games of the year, they are averaging 5 goals per game.  That is by far the most of any team so far on this young season.  A big reason why they have been scoring has been the play of the newest shiny weapon, Alex DeBrincat.  The former Senator and Blackhawk have been playing some amazing hockey so far.  Through his first 6 games, DeBrincat is already up to 12 points thanks to his 8 goals.  He’s had multiple goals in 4 games so far this season, including a hat trick in his last game against Calgary.

I love the idea of pairing DeBrincat with Larkin tonight.  While Larkin only has 3 goals so far on this young season, he does have 8 assists.  These 2 players have been great together so far and although the Kraken are a bit stingy on defense and not the sloppiest of teams, they can be had and these 2 having home-ice advantage tonight should help them continue with the momentum they have built thus far.  Adding Lucas Raymond to this line gives us nice value as he’s only $4.2k.

Rangers 2 (Filip Chytil/Artemi Panarin/Alexis Lafreniere) vs. Calgary Flames

I’ve given 2 expensive lines so it’s only fair I give a cheapy.  Well, the line is cheap for the most part after Panarin.  While Panarin is the start of this line, I really like both Chytil and Lafreniere (Laf).  To say that Laf has thus far been a disappointment would be an accurate statement.  Something we need to remember is that he’s only 22 and is finally coming into his own.  He’s been playing much better this season and is a solid value for us tonight if you go with an expensive line to start.  At just $3.2k on DK, he’s someone who should see plenty of opportunities to score tonight while paired with Panarin.  Chytil himself is also a solid value at $4.3k.  Both of these kids can easily find the net tonight against the Flames.

Other stacks I like tonight:

Tampa 1 or 2 vs. Carolina

Montreal 3 vs. Jersey

Jersey 1 vs. Montreal

Boston 1 and 2 vs. Chicago

Minnesota 1 and 2 vs. Edmonton

Value D

Jacob Trouba – 4.2 blocks per game

Mario Ferraro – 6 shots plus blocks per game over last 5

Jacob Slavin – 5 shots plus blocks per game over last 5

Matt Roy – 5 shots plus blocks per game over last 5

NHL DFS Summary

This is a massive slate that can take us in multiple directions.  I plan on going heavy with both the Red Wings and Panthers tonight.

Although there are 10 games on the NHL schedule today, the first 2 games are early and not included on the DFS Main Slate for either DraftKings or FanDuel.  So we have ourselves a solid 8 game slate to play with tonight.  Tonight’s shaping up to be a fun looking slate

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

Ilya Sorokin ($8K DK/$7.4k FD) vs. Anaheim Ducks – The Ducks were stymied by Nico Dawes last night.  Tonight, they face a much tougher goalie in Ilya Sorokin.  Sorokin is playing some great hockey right now as he has 2 shutouts in his last 4 and 3 games with 1 goal or less.  The game he gave up more than 1 goal was against a potent lineup in the Avalanche.  The Ducks have struggled to score goals for a while now.  Over the last month, just 2.67 per game.  I’m a fan of Sorokin on DK tonight, but he’s almost a lock button on FD tonight.

Sergei Bobrosky ($8.4k DK/$8.4k FD) vs. LA Kings – Bobrosky is currently riding a 4 game winning streak.  During that streak, he hasn’t had less than 15 DK points.  The matchup for him tonight is a good one and there’s a solid chance he gets it to 5 games.  The Kings, while not awful, are averaging just 3 goals per game over the last month.  Of all the times playing tonight, that ranks in the bottom 4.  Bob should get the W tonight while limiting the damage

Outside of these 2 goalies, I have little interest in anyone else tonight.  All the cheap goalies are a big risk tonight, bigger than normal, and I’m just not sure I can stomach going w/ any of them.

NHL Stacks

St. Louis 2 (Thomas, Kyrou, Tarasenko) vs. Winnipeg Jets

St. Louis is clicking on all cylinders right now as they scored 6 against the Rangers on Thursday and then 7 against Nashville yesterday.  A lot of that has been due to the play of the second line.  Thomas and Kyrou have combined for 15 points over their last 5 games.  Both guys are extremely underpriced for their recent production.

Thomas is at $4.3k and Kyrou is at $4.8k.  We can certainly add-in Tarasenko to this stack as a lot of the offense goes through him.  Winnipeg is in a rough stretch over the last 30 days, giving up more than 3.5 goals per game.  With the Blues rolling and the Jets giving up goals, this is a great spot for some offense tonight that won’t break the bank.

Florida 2 (Bennett, Huberdeau, Duclair) vs. Los Angeles Kings

Sometimes trying to guess where the offense is going to come from with the Panthers can be tough.  They have one of the deepest offenses in the league.  All 3 of their top lines are in play each and every night.  Tonight, I’m siding with their second line.  This line has combined for 16 points over their last 5 games.  The core here for me will be Huberdeau and Duclair.

Huberdeau has been an assist machine.  He’s had assists in 14 of his last 15 games and is on pace to set a career-high number.  Duclair is also someone playing some great hockey right now.  He’s had goals in 4 straight games and has multiple shot attempts in each.  With Quick in goal for the Kings tonight, the Panthers should be able to put up a big number.  While offense tends to be spread out with the Panthers, this second line tonight should show some fireworks.

Islanders 1 (Nelson, Lee, Beauvillier) vs. Anaheim

The Ducks went with Stolarz in the net last night, so that means we get to pick on the Gibson today.  If you read my article yesterday, you knew my love for Jersey was based on Gibson being in net.  He’s been bad and hasn’t had a game giving up less than 3 goals in more than a month.  He was playing over his head for the start of the year but has come back down to the earth.

This top line for the Islanders has been playing extremely well.  They’ve combined for 11 goals and 20 points over their last 5 games.  With a great matchup tonight, they should continue to roll.  My lean here is Nelson and Lee as they are the goal scorers on the line.  Lee has 6 goals and Nelson has 4 over their last 5 games.  Oh, and Lee is just $3,500 tonight!  Love this spot for an Islanders team that is finally scoring some goals.

If you want to get a little crazy today, play some Flyers.  The Canadiens should have Primeau in net tonight and he’s been downright awful at the NHL level this season.  He hasn’t played with the Canadiens in over a month, but when he did play, he gave up goals and lots of them.  My lean with the Flyers would be the line of Atkinson, Brassard, and Giroux.

Other stacks (Vegas 1, Tampa 1, Florida 1, Min 1 and 2, Nash 1, Col 1)

Top NHL Defenseman

  • Cale Makar – Outside of Fox, best Defenseman in the league
  • Devon Toews – 18 shots and 11 blocked shots over his last 5
  • Roman Josi  – 9 points over his last 5, plus almost 6 shots plus blocks
  • Rasmus Ristolainen – $3.2k on DK.  More than 10 DK points in 3 straight games, great value.
  • Justin Faulk – Always the potential for both a shot blocked bonus and is putting the puck on net.

NHL DFS Summary

I didn’t write them up because I normally don’t play skaters against Calgary, but Colorado is a dynamic offense and can always be in play.  That top line is one of the best in the business.  This is a fun-looking slate.  Hope the plays I laid out help you cash!

When setting lineups, always make sure you are using our NHL optimizer.

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL DFS slate on Fanduel and DraftKings.  Today we have a split slate.  A 5 game slate starting at 1 pm EST, and then a 4 game slate at 7 pm EST that includes this year’s NHL Winter Classic.

Goaltending – Early Slate

Linus Ullmark ($8.3k DK/$8k FD) vs. Buffalo Sabres – Ullmark is a bit more than I typically spend on a goalie, but the spot this afternoon is just too much to pass up.  Coming out of the extended Christmas break, the Sabres have only scored 4 goals in 2 games.  The 2 goals per game are pretty much in line with the whole month of December as they averaged just 2.1 goals per game in 10 games played.

Ullmark has played pretty sparingly this season, but when he’s played he’s been pretty good.  In the 6 games he’s played since November 20, he’s been under 15 DK points just once.  In those 6 games, he has 2 games over 30 DK points.  I can easily envision him getting around the 25 point mark tonight against one of the more low-powered offenses in the NHL.

Sergei Bobrovsky ($8.5k DK/$8.5k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens – Like Ullmark, Bobrovsky is in the salary range I tend to stay away from.  That said, he too is in just a great spot.  In the month of December, the Canadiens scored just 1.67 goals per game in their 9 contests.

Bobrovsky hasn’t been overly sharp this year.  He’s given up at least 3 goals in all but 3 contests this year.  This is a great bounce-back spot for him though with how poorly the Canadiens have been.

Ilya Sorokin ($7.5k DK/$8.4k FD) vs. Edmonton Oilers – I like this play much better on DK than FD and this is strictly a GPP play as Edmonton can score goals in bunches.  It’s not safe by any means.  Sorokin has quietly put together a very solid season.  On the year he has a 2.49 GAA and a .926 save percentage.

If we look at his season as a whole, he’s had one dud and that was all the way back on November 16 vs. the Panthers.  He scored under 13 DK points just once in the month of December.  This is the Oilers third road game in 4 days and I expect to see some tired legs out of them.  Sorokin is a risky play this afternoon, but he’s been solid all year and we aren’t paying an arm and a leg for him.

Stacks – Early Slate

Carolina 1 (Aho/Niederreiter/Teravainen) + Slavin

Columbus is one of my favorite teams to stack against when playing NHL DFS.  They’ve been giving up goals in droves this season.  During the month of December, their opponents scored more than 3.5 goals per game against them.  A lot of this has been due to how poorly defensively they’ve been playing.  No team on the early slate gave up more high danger chances per game in December than the Blue Jackets at 12.67.  Giving up that many high-quality chances is just asking for trouble.

With the Hurricanes healthy post their covid outbreak, they’re back to being a high-powered offense.  This trio is where the offense starts.  Of the 4 goals the Hurricanes scored on Thursday, 3 came from this line, and the line combined for 5 total points.  They should have no problem replicating that today against a poor defensive team.  My favorites on this line are Niederreiter and Teravainen as they are the cheaper parts to it.  Over $8k for Aho is a lot, but if you can afford it, go for it.

Florida Power Play 1 (Barkov/Duclair/Huberdeau/Reinhart/Weegar)

No team has given up more power-play goals in the NHL this season than the Montreal Canadiens.  They are currently tied with the Canucks with 31 power-play goals against.  The majority of this power-play unit plays together on the second line so if you want to save some money, you can certainly cut out Barkov.

My preferences here with forwards are Duclair and Huberdeau.  Duclair has 3 goals in his last 4 games and Huberdeau has 7 points in 5 games.  The two of them plus Weegar should be able to put up some damage today.

Islanders 2 (Pageau/Beauvillier/Dal Colle) + Dobson

I’ve given 2 pretty high-priced stacks in Carolina and Florida.  Although I love the Islanders’ first line, we need to find some salary savings.  We can get that with the second line of the Islanders today.  I love the Oilers.  They have 2 of the best players in the NHL on their team.  That said, they are awful defensively.  During the month of December, they gave up 3.73 goals per game.  That’s top of any team on this afternoon slate.  It’s bad, very bad.

This second line should get Beauvillier back today as he cleared Covid protocols yesterday.  This season has been a bit of a struggle for Beauvillier and Pageau as they have combined for just 9 goals this season.  That said, they’re in a great matchup today and one of these guys should be able to put the puck in the back of the net.

Other stacks (Bos 1, NYI 1, Car 2, Fla 1, Edm 1, Nash 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Noah Dobson
  • Mackenzie Weegar
  • Jacob Slavin
  • David Savard
  • Jake McCabe
  • Charlie McAvoy
  • Darnell Nurse

Evening Slate Notes

I’m not as big of a fan of the evening slate as I am with the early slate. That said, I love hockey and will probably still throw in a lineup.  With goaltending, we shouldn’t get fancy.  He’ll be highly owned, but Thatcher Demko is playing amazing right now.  He’s won 8 of his last 9 contests and in that stretch, he’s given up 2 goals or less 7 times.  Don’t overthink this one, even though he’ll be very popular.

In terms of stacks for tonight, look no farther than the LA Kings as they get to take on Martin Jones and the Flyers.  The majority of the offense with the Kings comes from their top line of Kopitar, Iafallo, and Kempe.  You’ll also want a piece of Matt Roy if you are playing the Kings.  He’s still priced under $5k on DK which does seem like it’s a bit low for his production of late.

I’ll also want to grab a piece of the NHL’s Winter Classic between the Wild and the Blues.  This should be a fun game as both offenses have been pretty good of late.  You could make a case for a game stack here.  For St Louis, their second line is where I always start.  Robert Thomas is back and is still at just $3.7k on DK.  I love pairing him with Tarasenko tonight.

On the Wild side of things, I’d go Hartman and Kaprizov.  The only concern though is they are very pricey.  A cheap way to get some extra exposure to them is to pair them with Alex Goligoski.  He plays with them on the top power-play unit and is also on the top defensive unit.  His cost is only $3,300 and has been producing of late.  He’s been under 10 DK points just once in his last 4.

When setting NHL lineups today, make sure you are using our optimizer.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!
