$trike for the CA$H: Tuesday June 11

Hello sports fans! Hopefully you have been following along and making the plays listed here on the site because we have been raking. Yesterday, two of my three lineups cashed so I am playing with house money.

Today’s slate offers a few opportunities to increase our bank with several bat stacks and a few good pitcher options.

NYM@NYY DOUBLEHEADER Wheeler vs. Tanaka, Vargas vs, Paxton

Due to yesterday’s rainout we get a doubleheader.

Wheeler hasn’t been awful this year and Tanaka is seemingly always one pitch away from having his arm fall off. With that said, I have NO PLAY in the game.

The second game of this tilt is where I think we make our money.

The Mets will throw Jason Vargas against James Paxton. Look, you can write all of your fancy articles about Jason Vargas and focus on one or two obscure metrics to bolster your argument in his favor, but let’s face it- Jason Vargas isn’t very good at baseball. The only “Vargas” that I’d ever put any money on is Kevin’s neighbor, the FedEx delivery guy in the Seinfeld Bizarro Universe episode. Vargas! Feel free to hit me up @Matt_Striker_ and we can discuss this further. I say play NYY BATS here!

AZ@PHI Duplantier vs. Arrieta

I like PHI BATS here. I especially want to say to keep an eye on the Phils lineup. If Kapler ever decides to move Scott Kingery up in the lineup- watch out!

TOR@BAL Thornton vs. Means

Once again, I shall sing my favorite song of late ( in 7/4 time of course, since I am a RUSH fan ) Play Vlad stacks. I don’t care how you do it, but do it. While Means may not be terrible, on a whole the Orioles are. Have some fun with a TOR BAT stack here.

STL@MIA Hudson vs. Hernandez

With Caleb Smith hitting the IL ( boo) the Fish call up a RULE Five player to start vs the Cards. Ironically, Smith was a Rule Five selection in 2016 by MIL from the NYY. Another fun Rule Five fact is the Pirates selected Roberto Clemente from the Dodgers in 1954. Some other names found in Rule Five draft world lore are : Wander Franco, Justin Bour, Omar Narvaez, etc. That’s where it begins and ends for me with Elieser Hernandez. His numbers weren’t awful at the lower levels but nothing to make me say ” ooh, let me throw money on him”

For the Cards, Dakota Hudson has found his sinker ball command and it is inducing a lot of groundball outs, and for this reason I like HUDSON and STL BATS as the play here.

TEX@BOS Jurado vs. Hernandez

The BoSox will turn to Double A Portland Lefty Darwinzon Hernandez tonight. Emotions are high in Beantown between the upcoming Game Seven of Lord Stanley’s Cup and David Ortiz taking a bullet, so I am curious to see how this game plays out. Boston’s bullpen is just awful and if TEX bats can get to the bullpen, they may be very productive. Jurado has been very interesting as of late. If you’re feeling lucky play TEX BATS- but if you’re practical and conservative, then NO PLAY

OAK@TB Fiers vs. Stanek

TB will go with the opener here but it doesn’t really matter as every arm on this team can pitch and pitch well. I like TBB BATS here.

CIN@CLE Castillo vs. Bauers

If you would have come to me in April and told me the records of these two pitchers ( 6-1, 2.66 ERA & 4-6, 3.93 ERA ) I’d had said you had them mixed up, but sadly, that is not the case as Bauer has struggled to find himself. REDS BATS could be a play here but I cannot go against one of my favorite pitchers in the league in BauerOutage. So, I break my cardinal rule and go with my heart over my head here and say NO PLAY. Otherwise, feel free to play REDS BATS here.

PIT@ATL Archer vs. Folty

Archer looked good his last time out and Folty still scares me with his propensity to give up the long ball. PIT just saw Folty, so maybe they capitalize on familiarity. A PIT BAT stack could be a play here. Another issue for me is that all Braves pitchers feel the breath and hear the footsteps of the “bearded one”, as Dallas Keuchel looked good in a Triple A start and is ready to take his rotation spot, most likely from the awful, brutal, dismal, abhorrent, Kevin Gausman.

SEA@MIN Leake vs. Perez

Leake hasn’t looked bad recently while Perez faltered last time out. I still say that the homer-happy Twins are a play here. MIN BATS

WSH@CWS Corbin vs. Banuelos.

Banuelos? Banuelos ? Bang him in his juevos? This is the chalkiest of chalks here. CORBIN AND WSH BATS all day.

MIL@HOU Peralta vs Peacock

This will be a fun series to watch. There should be a lot of good baseball here. Milwaukee’s lineup can keep any pitcher in the game and for that reason I am staying away with a NO PLAY here.

DET@KC Turnbull vs. Junis

For as great as Hou vs. Mil should be, this series should be the antithesis. There very well could be 12 total runs in this game or there could be two. It’s too volatile for me to put my money on. Perhaps, you’re a better man than I . NO PLAY.

CHC@COL Quintana vs. Lambert

COORS ALERT ! COORS ALERT ! Stack Rockie and Cubs bats here. Quintana has been servicable but it’s Coors, so, yea…

SD@SF Paddack vs. Beede

Happy Chris Paddack Day everybody!! I have recently been writing on social media about how everyone that is giving Madison Bumgarner a hard time about barking at Max Muncy should go find MadBum personally. Find all 6 ft 5, 250+ lbs of him and tell him to his face how they feel. It’s easy to talk sh*t behind a computer, but go to a restaurant or hotel where Bumgarner is eating with Bruce Bochy and step to him then and see how tough you are. If anyone can it’s Chris Paddack- but you see, Paddack is a respectful Texas boy and he would never do that, but what he WILL do is shut the Giant bats down -big time. PADDACK is the play .

LAD@LAA Maeda vs. Pena

I won’t pick on the Angels bats because, well, you know, Mike Trout and stuff but I WILL pick on Pena and the Halos bullpen. I like LAD BATS here

Ok, that’s all for me. Remember-if you’re up, play with someone else’s money, if you’re down its always OK to sit out a day or two.

Winning should be fun- not stressful.

It’s a top-heavy slate with a pair of aces toeing the bump. Weather will have to be watched in the Northeast with some rain expected.

Top-Tier Arms

Chris Sale, Rangers at Red Sox ($11,800 FD, $10,900 DK): That price on DK seems a bit low. Sale is coming off arguably his best start of the season, a complete-game shutout against the Royals, in which he walked none and struck out 12. Amazingly, he has not won at Fenway Park this season. In his career, he is 7-2 with a 2.82 ERA against the Rangers. On the season, Texas strikes out the fourth most frequently against lefties at 26.4%. You have to like the chances of Sale getting to 10 strikeouts, though an almost guaranteed two strikeouts are taken out of the lineup with Joey Gallo not playing. Of course you can look at it the other way as well, Gallo is a big bat that could hurt Sale.

Hyun-Jin Ryu, Dodgers at Angels ($10,700 FD, $10,400 DK): The Dodgers have a “road” game in Anaheim against the Angels. Ryu continues his All-Star and Cy Young candidacy campaigns when he gets the ball for the first game of a two-game interleague series. He’s made only three career starts against the Angels, but is 2-0 with an 0.83 ERA. On the season, Ryu is 9-1 with a 1.35 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP. Don’t look for a high strikeout outing from Ryu, as the Angels are the hardest team to K against lefties at only 15.3%. This last stat makes him a GPP-only option for me.

Middle-Tier Arms

Mike Minor, Rangers at Red Sox ($9,200 FD, $9,400 DK): The old theory is that Fenway is a place that lefties want nothing to do with, but several good lefties have called it home the past few decades (starting with Bruce Hurst, go to Jon Lester, Now Chris Sale and David Price) and learned how to pitch there. Mike Minor may be the classic example of the crafty lefty getting better as he gets older. Minor is 3-2 with a 2.08 ERA in his last eight starts and 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA in six starts on the road in 2019. In two starts against the World Series champs last season, he was 1-1 with a 3.97 ERA. This season, the Red Sox’s lineup is not as deep nor scary and they still might be without one of their best righty bats in J.D. Martinez. Opponents are hitting .190 off Minor with runners in scoring position. Minor is a GPP-only option for me tonight due to a combination of his price and the potential for the Red Sox bats to break out.

Griffin Canning. Dodgers at Angels ($7,800 FD, $8,400 DK): Now here is another GPP-only play because it against the Dodgers. One thing to keep in mind about the Dave Roberts led team: They bashed the ball in April. They were very good in May. Their bats have come back down to earth in June. Canning seems more mature for his young age (22 years old) and has a plan how to attack hitters. He struck out a career-high eight batters over six innings against the A’s (if you watch him pitch, pay attention to his swing-and-miss slider, one of the best in the game), but he gave up four runs in a loss. He has a 2.25 ERA over his last four outings.

Bargain Basement Arms

Jason Vargas, Mets at Yankees ($6,800 FD, $7.600): The pitcher that everyone loves to pick on in DFS is coming off a complete game shutout. in the middle of April, Vargas owned a 14.21 ERA, living up to the moniker of the favorite pitcher to stack against. Since then, he’s posted a 1.85 ERA in seven starts, including his eighth career shutout last time out against the Giants. Wait a minute….Vargas has eight career shutouts? Eight!!! Wow, I guess you really do learn something new every day. Another GPP-only option for me tonight in Yankee Stadium.

Again, we have a day with no major weather issues. CLE, DET and CHC all have minor weather issues. Very warm in TEX so the ball should carry well.

Upper Tier Arms

Stephen Strasburg, Nationals at Padres ($11,500 FD, $10,600 DK): We just saw what Mad Max did to the Padres on Saturday night. We can use the same stats to recommend Strasburg this afternoon. This is the fifth time in that he will pitch in his hometown of San Diego. He is 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA in his previous four starts at Petco Park. Strasburg’s high floor makes him cash safe on both sites.

Walker Buehler, Dodgers at Giants ($11,300 FD, $10,200 DK): A very nice price on DK, making him cash worthy on that site, while on FD he is more of a GPP option. Buehler pitches in the best park for pitchers against a weak lineup. He is coming off his best performance of the season when his fastball was effective, he mixed his pitches well, and he racked up 11 strikeouts in a victory against the D-backs.

Middle Tier Arms

Chris Paddack, Nationals at Padres ($9,000 FD, $10,000 DK): Paddack is a tremendous pitcher at home. In 36 innings pitched at home, he has only given up 23 hits and 10 earned runs. He has struck out 43 batters in that span with only four walks. His batting average against is only .177. Especially on FD with that price, he is cash worthy. There is some debate on whether he will pitch or not so make sure you check on that.

Jake Odorizzi, Twins at Tigers ($9,800 FD, $10,900 DK): Really a cash game consideration with that discount on FD, he is the AL ERA leader at 1.96. He faces a weak opponent in Detroit. He has held opponents scoreless in six of his last seven starts, dating back to April 29 and while no earned runs is a lot to ask, pitching a great game is not.

Robbie Ray, Diamondbacks at Blue Jays ($8,800 FD, $10,600 DK): Another FD cash worthy pitcher, Ray lasted a season high seven innings in his last start against the Dodgers. He recorded a loss in that game after allowing three runs while striking out nine. With the Blue Jays not hitting the ball well, we can expect a similar outing.

Bargain Basement Arm

Reynaldo Lopez, White Sox at Royals ($6,000 FD, $4,600 DK): For a guy who struck out 14 batters in a start a little over a month ago, these prices are just too low. Use him and pay-up for any bats that you want.

Monkey Knife Fight Pick of the Day

Jake Odorizzi Over 6.5 Strikeouts: The AL ERA leader has struck out nine batters in consecutive starts. Seven should occur with relative ease against a team (the Tigers) with the third highest strikeout rate (26.2%) against righties.

Nice full slate today with some smart plays. There are four Pitcher plays and eight Bat stacks in play for today.

STL@CHC  Mikolas vs. Hamels.

Afternoon game at the friendly confines. Check the weather here but this is a NO PLAY game for me. The last time Mikolas saw the Cubs, he pitched well but I think the Cubs are gaining confidence, especially with the new signing. Hamels’ ERA is a tick above 2 at Wrigley.

CIN@PHI   Mahle vs. Eflin

Eflin coming off an IL stint makes me nervous as does the way certain Reds have been swinging a bat lately. This is a NO PLAY for me.

AZ@TOR   Kelly vs. Stroman

As always, if you can find a lineup in which to play Vlad and maybe Teoscar Hernandez in a mini stack, do so, just because it’s fun to have shares of Vladdy but beyond that, I like both of these pitchers and Stroman has been great even with little run support. There are better games today so, NO PLAY

ATL@MIA  Soroka vs. Urena.

I like the universe to correct itself here. Miami has been one of the hottest teams the last 30 days but I think they run into Soroka and cool down. PLAY: SOROKA and BRAVES BATS. A reminder: Urena is the guy that had the issue with Acuna.Jr, so that’s a fun thing to keep an eye on.

TB@BOS  Chironos vs. Porcello

I may like TB BATS here but given the magnitude of this series I am inclined to go NO PLAY here. There is too much volatility here for me to be comfortable putting my money down. There are better plays for today.

MIN@DET  Pineda vs. Boyd

Pineda off the IL against Boyd. I like MIN BATS here. Detroit’s bullpen is one of the worst in the league and the Twins current team OPS rivals that of the 1927 New York Yankees.  TWINS BATS HERE is the PLAY

COL@NYM  Senzatela vs. deGrom

Temptation here is to go deGrom but I am not sure what type of run support or organizational support he will get today. Mets skipper Mickey Callaway is under fire, the team seems to be in disarray and I honestly don’t know if they’ll come and pull deGrom in the 6th. Also, watch the weather in NY.  This game is NO PLAY for me.

NYY@CLE German vs. Plesac.

Yanks are happy to get out of Toronto and need to beat up on someone, whom better than the Indians ? I like NYY BATS here. You may be tempted to play German here but there are some other pitching options on the slate to consider. Plesac is fun but definitely not a play here for me today .

OAK@TEX  Anderson vs. Lynn

If the weather cooperates, Texas may be the play here. Anderson is not very reliable and balls can fly out of that ballpark. Try a TEX BAT stack today.

PIT@MIL Davis vs. Woodruff

Here is where Milwaukee shakes off the Miami series and gets back to doing what they do best. I like MIL BATS here as well as a WOODRUFF PLAY.

BAL@HOU  Ynoa vs. Cole

CHALK ALERT !!!  Everyone and their mother will be on this game. HOU BAT stack and COLE PLAY here but as always, I must remind you that sometimes games that are TOO chalky can be fickle. I dont think that is the case tonight but I’d be remiss if I didn’t throw it out there.

CWS@KC  Nova vs. Bailey

There could very well be a lot of runs plated in this game. I wouldn’t be against picking on Bailey here with some CWS BATS. Maybe a mini stack to fill out a lineup ?

SEA@LAA  Gonzalez vs. Heaney

Marco Gonzalez is a fly ball pitcher and I am really looking at a LAA BAT stack here. The obvious choices are guys like Trout but don’t be afraid to look beyond that and find a stack around LaStella or Fletcher-type players for some value in this game.

WSH@SD  Fedde vs. Margevicius

This has been an interesting series but I am going with NO PLAY here. Too many other options elsewhere.

LAD@SFG Kershaw vs. Pomeranz

The other CHALK game on the slate here today. I’d advise to keep an eye on the weather here, otherwise this is a KERSHAW and LAD BAT stack play for me. As I have said, I would much rather lose money on someone like Kershaw than have to sweat out someone like Jacob deGrom

Some notes:

Playing multiple lineups is a great way to get a diverse lineup in that may cash out.

Don’t overthink, look at numbers, splits, park factors and go with the numbers. Playing your gut is good and it works but don’t outsmart yourself, there are plenty of other people out there that will try to do that for you.

Once you win and you have “other people’s money” in your account, you’re on your way, but if you find yourself constantly loading up your account then maybe you chill for a few days and re group.

The info is out there. DFS is like finding money- if you know where to look.
