Davante Adams

The slate of DFS wide receivers is questionable with teams resting their stars with most of the playoff seeding figured out. There are some spots where you can afford some expensive receivers and some cheaper options with a good upside. Let’s dive into the best wideouts for Cash Games, GPP and who you should avoid with our Week 17 Wide Receiver DFS Picks.

Week 17 Wide Receiver Cash Game Plays

Davante Adams, GB @ DET

DK ($8,000) FD ($8,400)

Davante Adams had a great game against the Lions earlier this season with four touchdown receptions. You’d be crazy to expect that, but a solid game shouldn’t be questioned. He’s also coming off a game where he was targeted 16 times. He is Top 25 in both receptions and yardage with a weaker defense in Detroit. He should wreak havoc against the Lions yet again.

Michael Thomas, NO @ CAR

DK ($9,900) FD ($9,200)

It would be criminal to not include Michael Thomas on this list. He now has the all-time single-season reception record and still has one more regular-season game to play. He was dealing with a hand injury but won’t affect his status and Carolina (like the rest of the NFL) had trouble stopping him. Last time these teams met, 10 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. A slight opportunity for a Wild Card bye as well? Expect another big game.

Week 17 Wide Receiver GPP Plays

Jarvis Landry, CLE @ CIN

DK ($5,900) FD ($6,800)

This one is simple: Jarvis Landry is the Browns’ best receiver. The Bengals have nothing to play for while the Browns still have the opportunity to build up chemistry for next season. Landry is 12th in the NFL in yardage and should get a good amount of looks to up to get him closer to the Top 10.

Amari Cooper, WAS vs DAL

DK ($6,500) FD ($7,500)

This is Cooper’s last chance to show teams what he can do with impending free agency in the near future. The Cowboys lost their hold on the NFC East and need to win and have the Eagles lose to make the playoffs. With the reports that he was benched during last week’s game, this should be his chance to attack a weak secondary and show why he is still among the league’s top wideouts.

Week 17 Wide Receiver Fades

Juju Smith-Schuster, PIT @ BAL

DK ($5,500) FD ($5,900)

Juju didn’t look 100 percent last week against the New York Jets and I’m not sure he will be in this matchup either. He had seven catches for 75 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens earlier this season. But with the opportunity of a playoff berth for the Steelers still there, I see Juju trying to pull it out but he isn’t healthy yet.

Stefon Diggs, CHI vs MIN

DK ($6,500) FD ($7,500)

Diggs doesn’t get a crazy amount of targets as he only has one game this year with at least 10 targets. The Vikings have already clinched last Wild Card spot and this could be the reason Diggs gets pulled at halftime to prevent any injuries. Diggs isn’t as explosive against a good defense and I think he won’t produce as well as other wide receivers for this price.

Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry and Davante Adams over 23.5 receptions.

Arguably three of the best wide receivers this season should hit this mark. Michael Thomas is dealing with a hand injury but will play this week and should continue getting double-digit catches himself. Jarvis Landry is dealing with a hip injury but it won’t affect his status either. The combination of Landry and Davante Adams should easily get 14 catches combined.

As always, Sunday morning brought a handful of injury updates to consider while setting lineups. This week in the DFS Final Injury Fades/Plays, I’ll discuss a few players and their final injury outlooks.

Sign up NOW for WIN DAILY Premium Gold right here! Projections, wagering info, 24/7 expert chats and more!

James White

White traveled with the team to Baltimore, but as of now it is still not a sure thing that he plays. Although I do anticipate he is active, I’m not comfortable using White at $7,000 in single game slates. I definitely won’t use him in cash as the symptoms of turf toe are variable in nature and he could be legitimately limited. The flip side (as always with the Patriots) is that White is completely fine and performs in this potential shoot out. As I mentioned earlier this week, Rex Burkhead is a decent tournament play at just $3,900 on DraftKings.

Adam Thielen

According to Adam Schefter, Adam Thielen ($7,800 on DraftKings) is expected to play today. This automatically makes both Thielen and Stefon Diggs ($7,600 on DraftKings) tournament plays. The reason for this is that Thielen needs to show he’s truly “back” from this hamstring injury as they are notorious for lingering. For Diggs, Thielen being active bumps him back down to his usual “1.A” role that doesn’t see nearly as many targets as Thielen’s “1” role. This isn’t to say that they both can’t be productive today against this bad Chiefs defense, I just don’t trust them in cash.

Davante Adams

The headliner of the DFS Final Injury Fades/Plays for the last several weeks, Adams is expected to finally be active today. He automatically leap frogs (like he did over his coach at practice) into the top tier of wide receivers on DraftKings with a $7,100 price tag. However, do not use him in cash lineups just yet as the last step in his recovery is to show he can play a full game without re-aggravating the issue.

DeSean Jackson

Jackson is expected to suit up following a long lay off from a core muscle injury. The Eagles were extremely conservative with this injury and have taken their time, making me believe that Jackson needs off season surgery. At 32 years old coming off of an injury like this, I do not trust Jackson to make it through the full game. He’s a rare full on injury fade this week at $5,200 on DraftKings. Also fade Dallas Goedert ($3,100 on DraftKings) today with Jackson’s active status.

Thank you for reading the DFS Final Injury Fades/Plays. Now that you have the skinny on all relevant injuries, be sure to set those lineups using our pros’ picks of the week. Good luck!

Week Nine is on the horizon and it’s the time of year when the casual DFS players begin to fall off while the highly competitive people (like yourself) are looking for that extra advantage. Cue the DFS Insider Injury Edge to gain that advantage as I’ll give a comprehensive medical analysis of every fantasy relevant player injury for Week Nine. Let’s optimize those lineups.

James White

White popped up on the injury report and he was limited in practice on Friday. As a general rule, a midweek downgrade in practice participation is not good. Given that the injury is in relation to his toe, he is probably dealing with a classic case of “turf toe” which is disruption of the ligaments that run on the underside of the big toe. This makes it extremely painful to push off when running and jumping, but it’s worth mentioning that it’s likely not too severe. However, his pain level on Sunday will determine how productive he ultimately is.

To make matters worse, the Patriots are notorious for “miscommunication” when it comes to injury news, and there’s a non-zero chance that they simply used Friday as a rest day for the pass catching back. What’s all of this mean for you? It means that from an injury perspective, I’m fading White in cash games as his range of outcomes are wider than the Mississippi river. Consequently, a potential tournament play at just $3,900 on DraftKings is Rex Burkhead, who has 14 receptions in just four full games this season. Of course, Burkhead is nothing but a deep tournament play.

Davante Adams

Speaking of Adams, he’s got a very good chance at finally playing in Week Nine, but I want to emphasize that I’m fading him in cash this week. I want to see him dig off the line of scrimmage and sprint for a full game before officially declaring him “back”. However feel free to use Aaron Rodgers’ favorite target in tournament lineups as he is astonishingly still third in targets despite missing five games. In fact, he trails Aaron Jones by just six targets for the team lead.

DeSean Jackson

Next on the DFS Insider Injury Edge is DeSean Jackson. The reality is that Jackson might require offseason surgery for this groin/abdomen issue that has now kept him out for six games. With these kinds of injuries even if active, he’s not going to be 100%. He’s a better NFL wide receiver- keeping defenses honest using his speed- than DFS play, even in tournaments. I’m not confident Jackson will be active this week, but regardless I’m fading him due to the nature of this injury and the likelihood that it has not resolved completely. As a result, Dallas Goedert ($3,100 on DraftKings) will likely continue to absorb targets as defenses key in on Zach Ertz, making Goedert a deep tournament option at tight end.

Adam Thielen

Thielen suffered a hamstring injury in Week Seven and has not played since then. He practiced all week though it was in a limited capacity and Friday was no exception. I’ve mentioned repeatedly that hamstring strains can sideline players for up to three weeks, so do not be surprised if Thielen is inactive again on Sunday. However if he is active, I’m fading him in cash and only using him in tournaments until I see that he’s truly recovered. The $7,800 price tag on DraftKings is just too much for me at this time. The last discussion point here is his teammate, Stefon Diggs. If Thielen is inactive, Diggs is a smash in cash at just $7,600 on DraftKings against a below average Kansas City Chiefs team. If Thielen is active, I’m only using one or the other (not both) in tournament lineups).

Dede Westbrook

I believe that Westbrook’s injury is coming from a potential irritation of nerves from the neck, radiating to his shoulder. This can cause numbness, tingling, and pain in both the neck and shoulder. For this reason, there’s a chance he is inactive, but either way I’m fading Westbrook completely. If Westbrook does not play in London on Sunday, Chris Conley is a fine option in single game tournaments at just $6,800 as he scored a season high 23.3 DraftKings points last week when Westbrook went down.

That’s it for this week’s DFS Insider Injury Edge. The goal here is to give you more context about fantasy relevant injuries to help you set your lineups on Sunday. Make sure you check back with me for updates on the status of certain players or any developments. Week Nine is your week to cash in.

Week Eight is in the books, so let’s move on to the DFS Start/Sit Injury Projection. In this week’s article I’ll discuss a few players who could make their return from injuries in Week Nine as well as a few others who are planning to play through the bumps and bruises. I’ll also discuss whether or not these players can perform well enough from an injury perspective or fade them. I’ll start with the Thursday night game.

Sign up NOW for WIN DAILY Premium Gold right here! Projections, wagering info, 24/7 expert chats and more!

David Johnson

I’ll start with the elephant in the room. What’s going on with David Johnson? Well, if we knew exactly what the deal is, we wouldn’t have to rely on Kingsbury for information. The coach has proven to have quite the poker face in terms of injuries. For example, Christian Kirk, who was a “game-time” decision last week, performed extremely well and did not appear to be limited. What we do know is that D.J.’s injury is related to his ankle, which generally means it’s either a lateral sprain, or of the high ankle variety. It’s not uncommon for players to suffer lateral ankle sprains, try to play too quickly, and re-injure themselves. Conversely, a high ankle sprain typically would not allow a player to come back after one week as DJ did in Week Seven. So, what does all of this mean? If D.J. is dealing with a re-aggravated lateral ankle sprain, the Thursday turn around simply might be too quick of a turnaround. Even if he’s active, I don’t want to use him in any Showdown slates as the 49ers defense is as stout as they come. Fade him.

Matt Breida

Unbelievably, this is Breida’s first appearance on the DFS Start/Sit Injury Projection. It seems that he always misses at least one quarter of every game due to injury. However he rarely is in danger of missing time. On Sunday he was forced out of action due to an ankle injury, and I’m concerned about the exact mechanism of injury. I tweeted about it here. Long story short, I think Breida may be dealing with a high ankle sprain, which depending on severity can hold him out for several weeks. I would not plan on having Breida in any lineups, but even if he suits up, I’m sitting him.

Patrick Mahomes

No. Not yet.

Davante Adams

Week Nine marks 38 days since we’ve seen Adams on a football field. That’s about five weeks, so there is a high probability he plays against the Chargers seeing as grade II turf toe injuries take four to six weeks to heal. Check back with me as the week progresses because this would be the game to use the Packers’ target hog at $7,100 on DraftKings. If he’s active, I have no concerns of re-injury for Adams. Lock. Smash. Cash.

Marquise Brown

“Hollywood” is another player who I suspect is dealing with a high ankle injury. The reason for that thought is due to the fact that he has not played in three weeks, and is now planning on a Week Nine return. Regardless of the past, I’m not afraid to use Brown in tournaments as it relates to injury. However, I am extremely hesitant to play him against the New England Patriots defense.

Dede Westbrook

I’m nervous about Westbrook’s availability in Week Nine. The immediate thought when players are dealing with shoulder and neck injuries is nerve root irritation. The spinal nerves exit all throughout the spine, and the ones from the neck go directly to the shoulder and upper back. When nerves are irritated they can cause shoulder and neck pain, numbness and tingling, and tend to give that “asleep” feeling all the way down to the hand. Now, this is speculation on my end, but that type of injury is definitely within the realm of possibilities. If he’s active, I’m sitting Westbrook.

James Conner

Conner has an AC joint sprain. That means the ligament connecting the outside portion of his clavicle bone and the tip of his shoulder bone was damaged to some extent. These injuries can be minor or cost players up to four weeks of action. Check back with me as we’re not sure of the severity quite yet, but if he manages to suit up, there is a risk that he re-injures the joint. I’m staying away in cash and would consider Jaylen Samuels in tournaments instead. Sit Conner.

Adam Thielen

Say it with me class: grade I and II hamstring strains can cost players one to three weeks of missed time. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times. Thielen’s chances of playing are better than last week, but I’m not convinced he’s ready yet. Check back with me to read about his practice participation and the reports out of Minnesota. If he practices, I wouldn’t hesitate to use him against the Chiefs who can’t seem to cover running backs or slot receivers.

Thanks for reading the DFS Start/Sit Injury Projection. Make sure to check back here for updates as they come.

Week Eight is almost upon us. which is definitely reflected in the long list of player injuries to break down in the DFS Week Eight Injury Analysis. There won’t be much time for messing around on this one, so I’ll get right to it.

Drew Brees

As I mentioned earlier in the week Brees’ thumb surgery was a mere five weeks ago, and he just initiated practice on Wednesday. These practices were limited in nature and of course the team remains on the fence in terms of his chances of playing. Although there’s definitely a chance Brees plays tomorrow, I’m not entirely convinced they bring him back with a 6-1 record as a favorite over the Cardinals with a bye on the horizon in Week Nine. Lastly, this was a contact injury that theoretically could be re-injured if brought back too soon. I would be surprised if Brees is active.

Alvin Kamara

Kamara is dealing with a couple of different injuries of his knee and ankle. It is reportedly a high ankle sprain, which on its own can take some time to heal. Despite his limited practices this week I’m using similar logic to Brees’ status when it comes to Kamara: Given the overall state of the team and a bye in Week Nine, why risk playing him at all? Even if he’s active, with a $7,600 price tag on DraftKings, I’m staying away as he’ll likely be limited in either work or physical capacity.

Keenan Allen

Allen popped up Wednesday on the injury report with a hamstring strain and has not practiced since then. The Chargers have said that he is a game time decision but also said he would be limited in snaps if active. With the knowledge that hamstring strains can limit players for one to three games and the suggestion that he could be on a snap count (if active at all) does not give me confidence to play Allen at $6,400 on DraftKings.

Matt Ryan

Ryan returned to practice in a limited capacity on Friday following a pretty gruesome ankle injury last Sunday. It seems the quarterback avoided catastrophe as the dreaded grade II high ankle sprain would have held him out indefinitely. Considering that Ryan isn’t exactly Michael Vick in the pocket, I would still expect him to put up respectable passing numbers but would only use him in tournaments if active.

David Johnson

There is one thing that is clear about the Arizona Cardinals and that is their penchant for keeping player injuries mainly under wraps. They demonstrated those characteristics in their handling of David Johnson over the last two weeks and with his teammate, Christian Kirk, one month ago. Ultimately, D.J. did not practice all week and the Cardinals made two depth signings at running back to boot. I don’t expect Johnson to be active, but even if he is, can you trust him against the stout Saints defense with an ankle injury?

Christian Kirk

Week Eight marks the first shot that Kirk has at playing following his high ankle injury from Week Four. However, he continued to be limited in practice, which is a bit concerning given the time frame. Additionally, the game-time decision did not end with him being activated in Week Seven. Overall, if Kirk is active, I want to see him perform before using him in cash games. I might consider him in a few tournament plays though at only $4,700 in a game the Cardinals are expected to be down in.

Davante Adams

Unfortunately the DFS Week Eight Injury Analysis does not include much optimism regarding Adams’ status. I think we’re still a week away on Adams, but he definitely has a chance to return as Sunday marks 31 days since the turf toe injury. Typically grade II sprains last from four to six weeks. Check back with me to be certain.

Josh Jacobs

I expect Jacobs to be active as the primary limiting factor in shoulder injuries (that are not unstable) for a running back is pain. And whether we agree with the practice reports or not, the Raiders are likely to “shoot him up” prior to their game on Sunday if it is still bothering him.

Tyrell Williams

Williams will make his long awaited return as the Raiders’ number one receiver against a depleted Texans secondary. Additionally, Williams has no competition for targets (aside from Darren Waller) in a game they are expected to lose. I don’t mind Williams as a tournament play this week.

Thanks again for reading the DFS Week Eight Injury Analysis Report. Make sure to check back with me Sunday for my final thoughts before locking in those lineups!

DFS: Week Eight Injury Watch

Week Eight brought yet another flurry of injuries to discuss as the NFL season carries on. As always I’ll mention every DFS relevant player and their respective injury (or suspected injury) and what to expect moving forward from a medical perspective. Enjoy this first version of the Week Eight Injury Watch!

Sign up NOW for WIN DAILY Premium Gold right here! Projections, wagering info, 24/7 expert chats and more!

Adam Thielen

Thielen injured his hamstring on Sunday afternoon in the first half against the Lions, and was ruled out for the rest of the game. Thielen and the Vikings remain optimistic about his availability, but I’m not so certain we should follow suit. As I’ve mentioned week after week, grade I and grade II hamstring strains can take anywhere from one to three weeks to heal. Thielen did not practice Tuesday, only adding to the concern that the swelling and pain are likely still significant. It would be an extraordinary feat if Thielen is able to play on Thursday.

Update: Thielen has been officially ruled out.

Kerryon Johnson

Kerryon is now on IR following a “procedure” on Tuesday. Consider firing up Ty Johnson up who is $4,900 on Draft Kings and $5,200 on FanDuel.

Will Fuller

Fuller, who has a history of hamstring strains, has already been ruled out by the Texans so consider both Keke Coutee and Kenny Stills as they are under $6,000 on FanDuel and under $5,000 on Draft Kings.

Matt Ryan

Ryan was injured after being sacked by Aaron Donald on Sunday. I tweeted about it here. The Falcons are acting like it isn’t too serious, but I have my concerns. Based on the mechanism of injury, he either has an eversion ankle sprain (think Keke Coutee in the preseason) or a high ankle sprain (think Saquon Barkley). Both of those injuries (if significant enough) can cost players between one and four weeks. Check back with me about Ryan’s availability later this week after more reports become available.

Update: Ryan did not practice on Wednesday but there are reports that he could be good to go on Sunday. This tells us he likely avoided the dreaded high ankle sprain. Check back with me for further updates.

Davante Adams

Thursday marks four weeks since Adams picked up this grade II turf toe injury, making Week Eight his first real shot at playing again. Grade II turf toe can take between four and six weeks to heal, so it isn’t a slam dunk that he’ll play just yet. There is still a chance that the pain has no fully subsided, so make sure to bookmark this article as I’ll continue to update it as the week progresses.

Christian Kirk

Next up on the DFS Week Weight Injury Watch is Christian Kirk. Kirk suffered a high ankle sprain in Week Four and like Adams, has his first legitimate shot at suiting up on Sunday. Last week he was a game time decision, so that tells us that he’s getting close. As always, make sure to check back with me for more updates.

Update: Kirk practiced again in a limited capacity on Wednesday. This is a sign that he is indeed moving towards being active on Sunday against the Saints.

David Johnson

Last week D.J. was the cause of many headaches around the DFS community as his ankle injury was evidently much more severe than Kingsbury made it sound. Hopefully you read my Final Injury Report here and backed off of your D.J. shares. This week, I’ll continue to monitor his progress and try to gather new information before Sunday.

Update: Johnson did not practice on Wednesday but that doesn’t move the needle on his status one way or the other. As the week progresses, I’ll continue to watch his status. With the signing of Zach Zenner and Alfred Morris it’s important to know that third string running back D.J. Foster is also injured. Neither of those two newly signed backs have ever led a backfield and together have been cut by four or five teams within the last calendar year. Additionally, they profile as a pass catcher and a grinder respectively. All of this is to say that I believe they’re merely depth signings with the Cardinals keeping worst case scenario in mind.

Additions

Adrian Peterson

Peterson told reporters this week that he had an MRI and was diagnosed with a grade II lateral ankle sprain and a grade I high ankle sprain. Now, part of me does not believe the full extent of this diagnosis as no human on this planet would play in an NFL game with these injuries. The flip side of my thinking is that AP has proven to us time after time that he is not like the rest of us. In fact, he returned to NFL action and was in the running for MVP in 2013 just nine months removed from an ACL tear. The reality is that the truth about his current injuries probably lies somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately, “the middle” is significant enough to scare me away from using much of AP tonight, especially in cash.

Alvin Kamara

Kamara is banged up and missed practice on Wednesday as he is currently dealing with a knee sprain (likely MCL) and a high ankle sprain (some people in the media like to say “high ankle issue” but make no mistake, it is indeed a sprain despite the severity). There is also a belief that since the previously mentioned Zach Zenner was released by the Saints that Kamara is close to returning. Although this could be true, there is also a good chance Zenner was signed prior to knowing the severity or extent of Kamara’s injuries. The point I’m making is that I’m not convinced Kamara plays this week just yet.

Drew Brees

Brees’ situation is still cloudy as he just started practicing again in a limited fashion on Wednesday. He tells the media it’s his plan to start, but still isn’t sure of his strength. As a quarterback, he requires close to full strength and definitely full fine motor control of his surgically repaired thumb making me slightly concerned about him playing this week. On average, athletes can return to sport between four and seven weeks. One specific study done by Werner and colleagues found that in a sample of nine skill position football players, the return to sport time was seven weeks. Arguments against Brees returning are obvious: the Saints have not lost since his injury, Teddy Bridgewater is rolling, and NOLA has a Week Nine bye. Why bring Brees back this week if he’s admittedly not sure of himself just yet? I would not be surprised if Brees waits until after Week Nine, but stay tuned for more updates.

That’s it for the DFS Week Eight Injury Watch. Start building those lineups and check back with me for up to the minute injury updates.

Week Seven is upon us and the impending return of some key players is yet again in play. Last week hopefully you took my advice and beat the crowd to using Tyreek Hill while avoiding Alvin Kamara. In this iteration of the DFS Week Seven Injury Report I’ll once again touch on several players and their respective injuries.

Sign up NOW for WIN DAILY Premium Gold right here! Projections, wagering info, 24/7 expert chats and more!

DeSean Jackson

In the middle of last week Jackson’s injury on the report changed from “groin” to “abdomen” which was unexpected but makes some sense. A muscle injury like Jackson’s can involve any of the muscles that attach to the pelvis from the leg or abdomen. Typically these can take anywhere from four to six weeks to heal, so I do not expect Jackson to play this week, but check with me again later this week. If he made some quick improvements over the weekend, I may be wrong.

Update: Jackson did not practice on Wednesday and in my estimation still seems a week or two away from returning. This abdomen injury is much more serious than the Eagles want to admit. Check back later this week to confirm he has not made unexpected improvements.

Patrick Mahomes

This one is driving me a bit batty as the general public has come together and decided as a unit that Mahomes’ ankle is damaged. The bottom line is that it was not taped on Sunday, his lateral mobility looked excellent, and he said himself after the game that it was not re-injured. Is the ankle bothering him some? It very well could be, but he is the exception to the rule when it comes to injury (as he is for most other things). His arm strength is so incredible that he does not need to step into his throws onto that ankle to be accurate. In fact, he’s made his mark in the league for more than a year now by doing exactly the opposite. The guy has thrown for 300 yards in all but one game this year and in Week Four Rushed for 54 yards. What else do you want from him to prove that he’s healthy? Confidently use in in the Showdown slates this Thursday as this offense continues to hum despite two consecutive losses.

Update: Talking heads continue to make a mess of Mahomes’ health. I suppose there aren’t enough news stories to fill all of the hours in a day. Below is a thread with former Chiefs Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer, Aaron Borgmann. He and I remain in lock step on the severity (or lack thereof) of Mahomes’ injury. Most importantly, Monday’s estimated practice report listed Mahomes as a full participant. If Mahomes does not perform well tonight, it will not be because of a “bad ankle”.

https://twitter.com/RehabAllStar/status/1184819802520596484?s=20

Saquon Barkley

Week Seven marks Barkley’s first legitimate chance at playing on Sunday, as he hits the four week mark since his high ankle sprain. He’ll still have to practice in full at least once this week for me to be confident in his recovery, but if he suits up, expect the Saquon we all know and love. Don’t worry about re-injury.

Update: Barkley was a full participant in practice on Wednesday. I have no reservations about firing him up this week.

Evan Engram

Engram sprained his MCL in Week Five and was not able to play against the Patriots in Week Six. Typically these injuries take anywhere from one to three weeks to heal, but it all depends on his ability to stabilize the knee while cutting and running. If I report that Engram is able to practice this week, he has a shot at playing on Sunday.

Update: Barkley’s teammate also practiced in full on Wednesday. The only reservation I have on Engram is his history of MCL sprains. Given his specific circumstances, I would not be shocked if a re-injury occurs. However, he’s a fine play this week given the matchup.

Josh Gordon

According to the Patriots, Gordon avoided serious injury to his knee on Thursday, but was unable to return. This tells us quite a bit about the pain he was experiencing, as you would think he would do all he can to bolster that constantly thinning receiving corps. As such, I wouldn’t expect Gordon to suit up this week if we’re treating this as a traditional MCL sprain.

Update: The Patriots notoriously give reporters and writers alike headaches with their secretive style as it relates to team related issues. As a result, injuries are especially difficult to project. However, it is of note that Gordon did not practice on Tuesday. I’m not optimistic he plays this week.

Davante Adams

Next on the DFS Week Seven Injury Report is Davante Adams. Adams’ injury is much worse than the Packers let on a few weeks ago. Adams himself came out recently and told the media that there is ligament damage to his toe on MRI, automatically staging it as a grade II. A grade II turf toe problem can take anywhere from three to six weeks to heal, and with the Packers sitting pretty with only one loss this season, I don’t expect them to rush Adams back just 24 days after the sprain. Unless he practices in full this week, don’t expect Adams back until Week Eight at the earliest.

Update: Adams continues to be sidelined. Do not expect him back until Week Eight at the earliest.

Amari Cooper

Cooper suffered a thigh contusion on Sunday and did not return to the game. To make matters worse the contusion is of his quadriceps, which are responsible for extending the knee and bending the hip. Well, receivers need to do these motions repeatedly with no pain or limitations, which is exactly what a contusion causes. Contusions are much more painful than they are given credit for and I would not be surprised if Cooper misses Week Seven. Check back with me on his practice reports to confirm this.

Update: Cooper was out of practice Wednesday and I would not expect him to play this week.

Mid Week Additions

Todd Gurley and Malcom Brown

Gurley was not at practice again on Wednesday. Given his absence and the report of a contusion to the knee, I would not expect him to play this week unless he manages to get in at least a limited a practice this week. His teammate, Malcom Brown, missed practice on Wednesday, so check back with me later this week for further details. It may finally be Darrell Henderson SZN.

Geronimo Allison and Marquez Valdes-Scantling

With a quick turnaround, Allison may not clear the concussion protocol before Sunday. That leaves his teammate, Valdes-Scantling as the lone starter remaining available if he is able to give it a go after a knee and ankle injury on Monday night. MVS returned in the fourth quarter for a big play, so that gives me guarded optimism he’ll suit up Sunday despite missing practice on Thursday.

That will do it for the DFS Week Seven Injury Report. Make sure to check back in with me as updates begin to roll in today and as always, follow me on Twitter @FFStudentDoc.

Fortunately, Week Five didn’t bring any severe injuries for skill players across the NFL. However, we are continuing to monitor a couple of the same players with a few new additions and updates. I’ll dive into the DFS Week Six Injury Watch so you can gain an edge against the competition and cash in big this week.

Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes had his ankle rolled up on by one of his linemen on Sunday and was clearly in pain for the rest of the game. He’s been battling that same ankle sprain most of the season now and we have to start wondering if the injury is contributing to the Chiefs’ below average performances. He’ll no doubt be active this week, but check back with me to ensure his practice participation does not begin to move in the wrong direction.

Davante Adams

As I’ve mentioned before, the average missed time for a grade II turf toe injury is approximately four weeks. Given the information the Packers have offered, tissue healing times, and the statistical data available, all signs point to a healthy and active Adams in Week Six. Check back with me later in the week to verify this.

David Johnson

On Sunday Kliff Kinsbury said D.J. played through a “bad back” (whatever that means). Check back with me later this week as I’ll try to gather some more context on this mysterious back ailment.

Tyreek Hill

Hill’s first true opportunity at suiting up will come on the heels of the Chiefs’ first loss. He’ll have to take contact, report minimal pain, and obviously have no setbacks before this is a possibility. Check back with me later this week to see a breakdown of his practice participation.

Hunter Henry

The Chargers never placed Henry on the IR following his tibial plateau fracture. Sunday marks Four weeks since the injury and speculative reports about a Week Six return are already surfacing as Henry has not been officially ruled out. I am skeptical Henry will be active.

Brandin Cooks

Cooks suffered another concussion in Week Five against the Seahawks. The good news is that he’ll have 10 days to clear the protocol. The bad news is that Cooks has a history of concussions, so that extra time might end up being a wash. Check back with me on Cooks’ status for Week Six.

Updates and Additions:

Christian McCaffrey

CMC took quite the tumble on his way to the endzone on Sunday and was ruled out in the fourth quarter after landing in a similar manner. He sat out of practice on Wednesday and now faces a cross-continental flight. This makes me moderately nervous for his participation and performance in London. The worst case scenario here is that he fractured a lumbar vertebrate in his back (unlikely). The best case scenario is that he bruised his tailbone. I want to emphasize that this is speculation based on the video, so check back with me later in the week.

That will do it for the Week Six Injury Watch. Follow me on Twitter here and check this article for mid week injury updates.

No news is usually good news in the physical therapy setting. The same can be said about specific NFL player injuries. Today I’ll take you through the the Week 5 Injury Watch and discuss a few players who may make a return to action this week.

Todd Gurley

I want to start here not because Gurley has an injury designation per se, but I want to highlight that his reduced touches and overall volume dip are not coincidences. In the preseason, I discussed that his knee condition inherently calls for workload management and the headaches this might bring. Well, here are in Week 5 and Gurley is a volatile option for the Thursday single game slate.

Damien Williams

Although it’s not a sure thing, his return is on the Week 5 Injury Watch radar as he continues to recover from a contusion. The key here will be his pain level, swelling, and ability to practice. I’ll give you more information as it surfaces.

Update: Williams practiced on Wednesday in a limited fashion. Check back with me as I have a feeling he suits up this week.

Tyreek Hill and A.J. Green

I’ve been getting several questions about these two. Don’t expect them back for at least the next two weeks. End of story.

Update: Tyreek Hill initiated practice today. However, he’s not out of the woods yet as his injury was from contact, so he’ll have to wait and see how he progresses. This is good news, but he still is a week or two away from playing.

Davante Adams

Adam Schefter reported on Monday that his source does not expect Adams to play in Week 5. Not that I distrust the ever reliable Schefty, but I do have a hard time connecting the dots, clinically speaking. Adams’ structural damage is considered “minor” based on MRI findings leading me to assume it’s a grade I strain, which typically results in fewer than two missed weeks. Even if it’s a grade II injury, the average missed time is two weeks.

Furthermore, Sunday will be 10 days since his injury giving him at least a chance to play. This is why definitively ruling him out almost an entire week prior to action is a head scratcher. Ultimately, as I’ve been saying all year, images are only half the story and his pain reports are the other half. If Adams is telling the medical staff he’s in significant pain, then I can see the conclusion would be drawn that he won’t be ready by Sunday. This is an injury you’ll definitely want to check back in with as the week unfolds.

Update: Adams did not practice on Wednesday, and his quarterback Aaron Rodgers told reporters “if [he doesn’t play] not this week then next week”. I’m starting to believe that this is a grade II injury for Adams and that he won’t suit up this week, but make sure and check back with me.

DeSean Jackson

As I mentioned earlier, no news is good news, Jackson’s groin injury seems to be progressing well. What concerns me is how the Eagles will choose to manage Jackson this week. He’s 32 and if he’s rushed back from this type of injury, re-aggravation is not out of the realm of possibilities. Nevertheless, Jackson has an opportunity to play in Week 5, so check back here to get my analysis as kickoff approaches.

Update: The Eagles held Jackson out of practice again on Wednesday so he could get another session of rehab in. It seems like they’re playing the long game here and as a soon-to-be medical professional, I’m thrilled. As a DFS player? Slightly disappointed for his outlook on Sunday. Make sure to check for updates with me as the week progresses.

T.Y. Hilton

The media is missing the boat on the significance of Hilton’s injury from Week 3. The medical team pulled him mid-game so he would not continue to tear his quad and he did not play in Week 4. Despite the fact that he was a game time decision, it was never close in my mind. Check back with me for updates, but I expect Hilton to once again be a game-time decision in a matchup against the Chiefs that has DFS players salivating.

Marlon Mack

Mack’s availability for the Sunday night game is still questionable to me. The Colts claim he was cleared medically in Week 4, but did not play for virtually the entire fourth quarter. Additionally, I re-watched the play on which he was injured and nothing stood out to me. Check back for updates on Mack.

Update: Mack was held out of practice Wednesday, so his status is up in the air. This is a touch and go situation without a clear diagnosis.

Mid Week Additions

Devin Singletary: Be on the lookout for Singletary to play on Sunday as he was close to it last week. Week Five will mark three games since his hamstring strain, so on average he’s almost out of the woods. There is still a small chance he sits out, so check back with me for an update.

Michael Gallup: I tweeted that the average return to sport time for the type of procedure Gallup had is 2-4 weeks. Sunday will mark the third week since the injury, so he has a chance to play. D.K. Metcalf just came back from this injury in 18 days to play in Week One.
