Colorado Avalanche

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot, where I’ll go through the top NHL DFS Goalies and Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel.

It’s Saturday and that means we have ourselves a healthy-sized slate of NHL DFS. We have 12 games on tap tonight in what should be a high-scoring affair. There are several top offensive teams in glorious matchups tonight. Toronto, Colorado, and Vancouver are in better-than-normal spots and we’ll need to figure out which expensive stack to use.

Let’s dig in and make some money!

NHL DFS Goalies

Jacob Markstrom vs. Los Angeles

We have a collision of 2 things we are looking for when picking a goalie. A goalie that is hot and a team that isn’t scoring much in the way of goals. The KIngs offense has pretty much disappeared over the last couple of weeks as they’re scoring just 2 goals per game over their last 6 games. We’ll want to attack that and we’ll attack with a goalie who is playing very well right now and won’t break the bank.

Over his last 3 games, Jacob Markstrom has a save % of .950 and has given up just 1.35 goals per game. Those are great numbers and with his price tag being just $7.5k on DK tonight, he’s very much in play. In his last 2 games, he’s scored 27.5 and 25.6 DK points. The Kings can explode at any time, but I like Markstrom’s chances tonight to get us value at his current price.

Ilya Sorokin vs. Carolina Hurricanes

The Islanders head to Carolina tonight to take on the Hurricanes. While the Hurricanes are favored in this one, I’m still going to take a swing at them with the Sorokin. Sorokin has been playing really well over the last few weeks and is extremely cheap tonight. HIs $7.1 price tag will allow us some payroll flexibility with the rest of our lineup.

With his level of play of late, we shouldn’t lose any productivity. Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen him put up 23.5 DK points vs. Edmonton, 24.4 against Toronto, and 27.9 vs. Florida. He’s been able to tame some pretty potent offenses and should be able to again tonight.

Other goalies: Joey Daccord, Marc-Andre Fleury, and Charlie LIndgren

NHL DFS Stacks – Main

Toronto 1 (Matthews, Nylander, Knies) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

On paper, there may not be a better matchup tonight than the Maple Leafs vs. Columbus. I normally try to steer away from highlighting an obvious stack like the Leafs, but it’s just a solid spot that I really just need to portray to all of you. Columbus is giving up pretty close to 5 goals per game over the last couple of weeks. They’re also giving up over 15 high-danger chances per game. They are extremely attackable right now and we’re going to do just that with one of the top goal scorers in the NHL.

Over his last 4 games, Matthews has 7 goals and 3 assists for 10 points. He is playing great right now and we’ll want to make sure we have a piece of him in our lineup tonight. He’s expensive so we’ll probably need to find some crazy value elsewhere, but he’ll be worth it.

His line-mates are also very much in play. William Nylander for his production and Matthew Knies for his value. If you’re playing Matthews tonight, Knies is almost a must as he’s just $3.5k on DK. He’s far from a sure thing to get to value, but his price tag alone makes him worth it. He makes paying the $10k so much easier tonight. Fading Matthews tonight is high-risk.

Colorado 1 (Rantanen, MacKinnon, Nichuskin) vs. Arizona Coyotes

The decision we’ll need to make tonight will be which of these top lines do we play. Do we go with Toronto vs. Columbus or Colorado vs. Arizona. My lean right now is Colorado. All 3 of these guys are on fire. While the Coyotes are better defensively than Columbus, this top line for the Avalanche is on absolute fire right now.

Let’s start with the cheapest of the 3 and that’s Valeri Nichuskin. Nichuskin has arguably been the best of the 3 and he’s the cheapest at $7.3k. No one on this slate has more high-danger chances over their last 5 games than Nichuskin at 27. He’s on fire and we’ll want him in our lineups tonight.

The next decision that you’ll want to make is to pick between the starts, Rantanen and MacKinnon. If I had to pick between the 2, I’d side right now with Rantanen as he’s cheaper and can still get us a boatload of points tonight. Over his last 5 games, he has 8 points thanks to his 4 goals and 4 assists. He’s $1,400 cheaper than MacKinnon tonight and that savings will go a long way to helping us build a solid lineup.

Columbus 2 (Chinakhov, Voronkov, Marchenko) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

I’ve given you 2 high-priced stacks already so in order to build a solid lineup tonight, I also need to give a cheap one. The second line for Columbus will do that for us. All 3 of these guys are below $5k. They’ve combined for 3 goals over their last 3 games and have a SATF of 36. That SATF is actually one of the top numbers of any trio skating together tonight. Only a handful of lines have a better SATF than this line.

It also helps that the Maple Leafs aren’t great defensively. Over the last couple of weeks, they have been challenged on the defensive front. They are giving up pretty close to 4 goals per game and have also allowed close to 36 shots on net per game. A complete game stack here is very much in play.

Other stacks I like tonight:

New Jersey 1 and 2 vs. Detroit

Detroit 1 vs. New Jersey

NYR 1 and 2 vs. Buffalo

Buffalo 1 and 2 vs. NYR

Van 1 and 2 vs. SJ

Value D

Timothy Liljegren – $3k

Jackson LaCombe – $3k

Ian Cole – $2.7k

MIkey Anderson – $3.7k

NHL DFS Summary

This is a great-looking slate that we can take in several directions. The decision we’ll need to make tonight will be who of the top lines do we pick. Going with anyone from Colorado, Toronto, and Vancouver will be a great path to success. We’ll also need to make sure we pick the right value plays.

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot, where I’ll go through the top NHL DFS Goalies and Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel.

It’s Saturday and that means we have ourselves a nice slate to look forward to.  After just a 2-game slate of NHL DFS tonight, we have 9 games in action tonight.  We have some glaring matchups that we’ll be able to exploit.  Colorado vs. the Ducks?  Sign me up.  Detroit vs. Montreal?  Sign me up there as well.  We also have some other really nice matchups to look forward to.

Let’s dig in and make some money!

NHL DFS Goalies

Adin Hill vs. Washington Capitals

Adin Hill and his Vegas Golden Knights should be able to take full advantage of this matchup tonight.  Over the last 2 weeks, the Capitals have scored just 2.67 goals per game.  It’s an aging and anemic offense that I’ll target with a goalie who has been playing really well.  Over his last 5 games between the pipes, Hill has a .929 save % and is giving up just a hair over 2 goals per game.  His numbers are by far the best of any goalie expected to be between the pipes tonight.

At $8.2k, he’ll make a fine addition to your Cash Game lineups tonight.  Should Logan Thompson get the nod, I like him just as much at the same price as Hill.  Lock and load either of these netminders tonight.

Tristan Jarry vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Both goalies that I like tonight are a little more than I like to spend on my GPP lineups, but in all honesty, they’re really the goalies that are playing the best right now and getting the best matchups.  I’m willing to spend up a bit more on goalie this evening and I’ll spend down on my D.  The Flyers offense has gone ice-cold over the last couple of weeks.  They’re scoring just 2.29 goals per game during that stretch.

Add in Jarry who has been playing lights out, and we have ourselves a goalie that should do well this evening.  Over his last 8 games, Jarry has an amazing .928 save %, allowing just 2.38 goals per game.  He’s done this saving a little more than 30 shots on per game.  Love this spot for him.

NHL DFS Stacks – Main

Colorado 1 (Nathan MacKinnon, Valeri Nichuskin, Mikko Rantanen) vs. Anaheim ‘Mighty’ Ducks

Oh, what a matchup this is for the Avalanche tonight.  The Ducks have been just awful on defense of late.  Over the last 2 weeks, the Ducks have given up over 4.5 goals per game.  That’s a stretch of 6 games that have seen them go 0-6.  They should be 0-7 after tonight with a matchup vs. an Avalanche team that is 5-1-1 over their last 7.  They’ve scored 3.86 goals per game over those 7 games.  Now anything can happen in the game of hockey, but this has blowout written all over it!

I’m siding with this top unit for Colorado tonight.  Although they’ve been mostly quiet of late, it hasn’t been for the lack of trying.  Over the last 3 games, this unit has an SATF of 44.  Only a couple of lines in the sport have a higher number than that.  All though shot attempts should lead to some goals tonight against a poor defensive team in the Ducks.  The star of this unit is obviously MacKinnon.

But playing both Nichuskin and Rantanen makes this line full.  Nichuskin actually leads the way on this line with 3 goals over the last 5 games.  He’s also the cheapest at $6.9k on DK.  Make sure he’s a part of your Avalanche stack.  Going with MacKinnon, Nichuskin, and Makar is also a way to get 3 Avalanche into a stack tonight.

Buffalo 1 (Casey MIttelstadt, Jeff Skinner, Alex Touch) vs. Carolina Hurricanes

If Antti Raanta makes the start for Carolina tonight, I’m all over Buffalo.  Over his last 3 games, Raanta has been dreadful.  He’s sporting a save % under .800 which is just horrendous.  He also has let in 4.72 goals per game.  This is essentially picking on a pitcher like Madison Bumgartner.  He’s someone that we need to attack any chance we get.  I plan on doing that tonight with the top line for Buffalo.

This line has been pretty good over the last 3 games.  They’ve combined for 2 goals and a SATF of 42.  If more of those shots can get on the net tonight, they should score at least a pair of goals.  It’s also a much more affordable line than other successful lines.  Tuck is the most expensive at $6.3k on DK.  I’ll look to pair Tuck with Mittelstatdt tonight.

Over his last 5 games, MIttelstadt has combined for 6 points and comes in at $4.3k tonight. He’s a great value play who should be in the middle of scoring if this line produces the way I think they will tonight.  Skinner is also very much in play with this unit as he leads the way with 21 shots on goal over the last 5.

Other stacks I like tonight:

Caroline 1 and 2 vs. Buffalo

Detroit 1 and 2 vs. Montreal

Ottawa 1 and 2 vs. Seattle

St. Louis 1 vs. Arizona

Value D

Jake Walman $5.3k (not a great value, but he should be priced higher)

Brayden McNabb $4.4k

Cam York $3.6k

Colton Parayko $4.2k

NHL DFS Summary

We have a solid slate tonight.  I didn’t mention them in my top stack, but the Bruins are in a great spots tonight and should score a ton of goals vs. poor defensive team in Toronto.

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL DFS slate on Fanduel and DraftKings.  Tonight we have a solid-looking 9 game slate.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

Igor Shesterkin ($8.4k DK/$8.1k FD) vs. Arizona Coyotes – This is about as high of a salary for a goalie as I’ll go.  While the Coyotes have been scoring more goals of late, it hasn’t been against the stiffest of competition.  In the games they scored more than 3 goals, they were facing teams like the Canadiens and Blackhawks.  Last night they were shut out by a solid defensive Islanders team.

While the Rangers aren’t a defensive juggernaut, they have one of the best goalies in the NHL in Shesterkin.  Since November 1, Shesterkin has just 2 games under 10 DK points.  He has a .938 save % on the year and has to be in the Vezina conversation.  After struggling a bit to start the game vs. Maple Leafs on Wednesday Shesterkin settled down nicely to finish the game with 35 saves and a Win.  There’s a very real chance he makes the Coyotes go back-to-back games without a goal.  Love the spot tonight for Igor.

Jacob Markstrom ($7.7k DK/$7.8k FD) vs. Edmonton Oilers – Something is wrong with the Oilers and until they fix it, we can attack them with goalies.  Over the last month, what should be a dynamic NHL offense, this team has mustered just 2.29 goals per game.  Of the 18 teams on tonight’s slate, that’s the lowest number.  Now some of this can be attributed to scheduling conflicts due to covid, but I’m still going to attack them until they prove me wrong.

In Markstrom, we have someone that has been up and down this season.  At times he’s been brutal, but at times he’s been remarkable, as evidenced by his 28 save performance vs. the Panthers team that had been coming into the game scoring goals at will.  Because it’s the Oilers, this is a risky spot.  That said, I do like the spot tonight and Markstrom has a chance to be one of the top goalies on the night.

After those 2 goalie gets a little murky.  Whoever gets the nod tonight for Minnesota should do well against a Blackhawks team that is anemic right now.  Darcy Kuemper is also in a good spot tonight but he’s very pricey.  I just can’t live with myself paying $8.5k for him on DK tonight.  That’s just too much, even with a matchup against a poor Canadiens squad.  I’d rather take my chances with  Markstrom tonight.

Stacks

I don’t need to tell you how good of a spot it is for the Avalanche tonight.  Montreal is dreadful and giving up more than 4 goals per game over their last 8 games.  They are one of the worst teams in the NHL. The top line of MacKinnon, Landeskog, and Rantanen is always in play and tonight is no different.  They are in a great spot tonight but are extremely pricey.  If you can fit them, go for it.

Calgary 1 (Elias Lindholm, Matthew Tkachuk, Johnny Gaudreau)

I highlighted above that the Oilers have been struggling offensively.  That actually pales in comparison to how bad they’ve been on the defensive side.  Of the 18 teams on tonight’s NHL DFS slate, no team has a higher goals against average over the last month than the Oilers.  As a team, you stand no chance of winning if you are giving up 4.71 goals per game.  Their goalies have been atrocious as they have an 84.86 save percentage over that period.

While such a low number like that isn’t necessarily sustainable and there will be regression, it’s still something that we want to attack.  This top-line for Calgary is still very affordable.  The most expensive player in this stack is Gaudreau at $6.7k on DK.  My priorities here are going to be Tkachuk and Gaudreau.  The two have combined for 14 points, 40 scoring chances, and 20 high danger chances over their last 5 games.  I’m not overly interested in any of the defensemen from this team.

New York Rangers 1 (Kreider/Zibanejad/Kaako) + Fox

This could be the homer in me, but I love the spot for the Rangers tonight.  They struggled in Carolina against the Hurricanes last night but get to go back to the Garden tonight against a much lesser opponent in the Coyotes.  My priority with this stack is Kreider.  He is red hot right now as he has 5 goals in his last 5 games.  Over those 5 games, he has 14 high danger chances and 19 scoring chances.  The duo of Zibanejad and Kreider have been extremely lethal this season and love pairing them together tonight.

Carolina 2 (Trocheck/Svechnikov/Niederreiter)  + Slavin

My final favorite stack tonight brings us to Newark, NJ with the Carolina Hurricanes.  Goaltending for the Devils has been a struggle of late as they’ve let in 3.5 goals per game over the past month.  With Blackwood expected to be in the net today, I love this sport for the Hurricanes.  Over his last 10 starts, he’s failed to give up less than 3 goals just once.

While the Hurricanes’ offense is always tough to gauge, I really like their second line tonight.  The pairing of Trocheck and Svechnikov have combined for 10 points over their past 5 games and 30 scoring chances.  Slavin makes a nice compliment to this stack as he’s only $4.3k on DK and he’s getting us some ancillary stats as he’s averaging more than 4 shots + blocks per game.

Other stacks (Min 1, Tor 1, Ari 2, Ott 1, Was 1, Col 2, TB 1 and 2, SJ 1)

Top Value Defenseman

  • Christopher Tanev
  • Kris Russell
  • David Savard
  • Calvin De Haan
  • Moritz Seider
  • Ben Chiarot
  • Adam Pelech
  • Scott Mayfield

Summary

We have some solid spots to attack tonight.  I didn’t write them up, but I love Minnesota again tonight.  They made for a profitable night last night and get the same matchup tonight, but at home and vs. a lesser goalie.  Their top line of Hartman and Kaprizov would be the place to go, but they are pricey.  Another spot I didn’t write up is Washington vs. Ottawa.  Ovechkin should add to his tally and get closer in his chase of the great one.  There are a lot of great spots for offense tonight and it has the makings of a very high-scoring night.

Make sure to use our optimizer when setting lineups!

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  I’m Jared and I’ll be your host.  Tonight we have a nice sized 9 game slate where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL slate on Fanduel and Draftkings.

Before we dive in I want to highlight some terms you’ll see in my article that may be foreign to you:

  • Corsi – Any shot attempt (goals, shots on net, misses and blocks) outside of the shootout
  • Even Strength – Play where both teams have the same number of players (including goalies) on the ice. Includes 5v5, 4v4, 3v3
  • Power Play – Play where the team has more players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 5v4, 5v3, 4v3
  • Penalty Kill – Play where the team has fewer players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 4v5, 3v4, 3v5

Goaltending

Tristan Jarry ($8k DK/$8.1k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens – Triston Jarry is one of the hottest goalies in the game.  Over his past 9 games he has a save % of .939 and has given up just 1.66 goals per game.  Outside of his last game vs. an explosive Edmonton offense he had been above 20 DK points in 6 consecutive games.

In a matchup against a Canucks team that is only scoring a hair over 2 goals per game, I really like Jarry’s chances of getting past his dud vs. Edmonton and back on the saddle w/ a game above 20 DK points again.  There’s a strong chance for a ceiling type game from Jarry due to the Vancouver’s high shot volume and low shooing %.  They are averaging 38 shots per game with just a 5.58 shooting percentage.

Alex Nedeljkovic ($7.7k DK/$7.5k FD) vs. New York Islanders – The Red Wings are riding a 4 game winning streak, with a lot of it due to the solid play of Nedeljkovic.  He has been superb of late.  In his last 3 games he has DK points of 32, 24.8, and 40.8.  The only concern with Nedeljkovic tonight is that the Islanders play at a slow pace and don’t shoot the puck much.

Over their last 5 games they are averaging just 25 shots per game.  That said, they’re also averaging less than a goal per game during that stretch.  The Islanders are getting past their COVID issues but tonight’s not going to be their night.  Look for Nedeljkovic to be one of the top goalies by the end of the night.

Marc-Andre Fleury ($7.3k DK/$7.3 FD) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins – As a Rangers fan I hope I’m wrong here but I think they struggle tonight.  They’re playing their third game in 4 days and are on the back side of a back to back. In Fleury we’re getting a very affordable goalie who is in the midst of a pretty good stretch of goaltending.  Over his last 7 games he has .947 saver percentage and is giving up just 1.69 goals per game.  With my expectation that the Rangers have some tired legs I expect Fleury to have one of his better nights of the year.

Stacks

Colorado 1 (Mackinnon/Landeskog/Rantanen) + Toews or Maker

Colorado gets an extremely favorable matchup tonight vs. a Senators team that is giving up close to 5 goals per game over the past 2 weeks.  Senators are one of my favorite teams to stack against because they are one of the bottom feeders in the NHL.  Over the last 2 weeks they have a corsi % of just 41%.  In comparison, the Avalanche are at 57%.  Anything below 50 isn’t great, but when you are approaching 40% you’re bad.  Very bad.

In net for Ottawa tonight should be Filip Gustavsson.  Over his last 5 games he has an .887 save % and is giving up more than 4 goals per game.  This stack is extremely expensive and will be very popular.  But they are in just too good of a spot to pass up. If you want to go a different route w/ Colorado tonight I do also love their second line with Kadri and Nichushkin.  Both guys have been playing extremely well together and come at a fraction of the cost of the top line.

Nashville 1 (Granlund/Duchene/Forsberg) + Josi or Fabbri

This line is very affordable tonight on DK and gets a great matchup.  Montreal is giving up close to 40 shots per game over the last 2 weeks.  That’s just a ton of volume.  While Jake Allen is serviceable goalie, he’s not someone that can handle that much volume without giving up a handful of goals.  His GAA over his past 5 games is north of 3.

This top line for Nashville is playing extremely well.  Over the past 5 games Forsberg has 6 goals while Granlund and Duchene have combined for 11 points with 9 assists.  They have a chance to put up a big number tonight vs. a poor defensive team.

Carolina 3 (Svechnikov/Kotkaniemi/Stepan)

I don’t have the warm and fuzzies about this pick, but the Sabres are just so bad right now.  Over their past 7 games they have a goals against average of 5 and a corsi of 47%.  That’s just downright awful.  While the Hurricanes aren’t playing their best hockey right now, they have shown explosiveness in the past.  There’s no better slump buster in the league than the Buffalo Sabres.

Svechnikov is one of their best players and even though the team is struggling to score some goals, he’s still firing away on net.  Over his past 5 games he’s averaging almost 3.5 shots per game.  His line mates are extremely cheap and if Svechnikov can connect on a pair of goals tonight with them we have a chance to break away from the pack at a low cost.  Carolina gets back on track tonight and puts up a very large number.

Other stacks (Detroit 1, Pit 1 and 2, Min 1, Tor 1 and 2, Was 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Roman Josi – Nashville Predators
  • Kris Letang – Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Tyler Myers – Vancouver Canucks
  • Seth Jones – Chicago Blackhawks
  • Jacob Slavin – Carolina Hurricanes
  • Adam Fox – New York Rangers

Summary

We have a fun looking slate tonight.  4 of the 9 games have a total of at least 6.  Some of the worst defensive teams are in action tonight and I’m going to make it a point to attack them.  The Toronto/Minnesota game tonight highlights two of the more solid teams in the league.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!
