Tuesday 4/13 UCL Slate and DFS Gameplan

The Champion’s League returns this week for the second legs of the Round of Eight matchups and I couldn’t be more excited!

If the teams are tied on aggregate goals at the end of the second leg, the team with more away goals wins on a tiebreaker.

If both teams are even on away goals, then it goes to an extra thirty minutes “as in the Juventus/Porto matchup this season” and if still tied after that “with the away goal rule still in application”, it goes to penalty kicks.

Porto (+320) at Chelsea (-117) – 2.4 Total Goals – Chelsea leads 2-0 on Aggregate

Compared to the other matchup, this is one is far less exciting. The expectation is that Chelsea handles business at home and advances to the semifinal.

Bayern Munich (+115) at PSG (+200) – 3.5 Total Goals – PSG leads 3-2 on Aggregate

This one is set to be a blockbuster as the tables have certainly turned between these two sides. As of now, DraftKings Sportsbook has PSG at -278 to advance. Not only do they take a lead into the second leg, but the away goal rule would allow them an extra tiebreaker as things stand.

With Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry out, PSG has the better high-end attackers at the moment, with the duo of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. Will they be able to help PSG hold on and grab revenge for last year’s Champion’s League Final? I think so but it should be tight.

Tuesday 4/6 UCL Slate and DFS Gameplan

The Champion’s League returns for a juicy Round of Eight and we have you covered below.

Dortmund (+700) at Manchester City (-250) – 3 Total Goals

Manchester City has the EPL title on lock and at times has looked unstoppable. While young sensation Erling Haaland might make for a strong prop bet “see below”, I don’t know if he is the wisest choice for daily fantasy. He will likely be seeing his share of double teams if Pep Guardiola has his way.

Liverpool (+155) at Real Madrid (+170) – 3.3 Total Goals

A rematch of the 2018 Champion’s League Final, both of these teams have had a rough year by either’s usual standards. For Real Madrid, with their age, this is a real last stand. As for Liverpool, I give them the slight edge and the oddsmakers agree. However, they have been anything but easy to trust this season, as it is proven hard to replicate the success of the prior two seasons.

Notable Goal Scoring Odds and Key Injuries

This article focuses on 3/16 UCL Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbook and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format. The goal is to gain an edge on the field at large.

Tuesday 3/16 UCL Slate and DFS Gameplan

The Champion’s League returns for the last of the second legs of the Round of 16 matches this week. While Man City is looking to cruise through to the round of eight, the other tie today is only separated by a goal.

If any teams are tied at the end of regulation, away goals scored count as the tiebreaker. Then if the teams are even on away goals, it goes to an extra 30 minute overtime which is not the first goal wins, but rather plays out in its entirety. If no teams score over those thirty minutes, it goes to penalty kicks.

Gladbach (+1200) at Manchester City (-435) – 3 Total Goals – Manchester City Leads 2-0 on Aggregate

Manchester City is so healthy and deep right now, they can field two teams. They deployed their “B-Team” over the weekend against Fulham in the English Premier League. With only FA Cup games and a short international break immediately ahead, we can expect the “A-Team” for this match. It is unlikely that they experience any issues here at home, as they should easily advance to the round of eight.

Atalanta (+225) at Real Madrid (+114) – 3.25 Total Goals – Real Madrid leads 1-0 on Aggregate

Last week we saw the downfall of club soccer’s old guard in Barcelona and Juventus. This week, we get another one of the historic giants facing a precarious situation. With Real Madrid only up one goal, with the away goal rule, they will have to work to ensure that they limit any damage. Karim Benzema has five goals over his last starts so he is red hot right now. Along with Benzema, other veterans expected in the lineup are Toni Kroos, Sergio Ramos, and Luka Modric. They have a ton of combined experience and should help boost the younger players around them to get past a mediocre Atalanta side.

Notable Goal Scoring Odds and Key Injuries

Note: Many of these players will not end up starting, but their goal odds are listed just in case. If they do not end up starting, disregard them. All odds are listed +300 or below and projected starters are listed in bold.

Tuesday 3/9 UCL Slate and DFS Gameplan

The Champion’s League returns for the second legs of the Round of 16 Matches. At this point, it will be make or break for these four teams. Today’s matches both enter the afternoon with the teams only separated by one goal apiece.

If any teams are tied at the end of regulation, away goals scored count as the tiebreaker. Then if the teams are even on away goals, it goes to an extra 30 minute overtime which is not first goals wins, but rather plays in entirety. If no teams score over those thirty minutes, it goes to penalty kicks.

Sevilla (+220) at Dortmund (+118) – 3 Total Goals – Dortmund Leads 3-2 on Aggregate

Behind the golden leg of Erling Haaland, Dortmund returns to Germany for the second leg up one goal. If there was a full crowd in attendance, this would virtually be a wrap as the Yellow Wall is one of the loudest stadiums on earth. However, the odds suggest that Sevilla will have a fighting chance. Considering Jadon Sancho is out, it is not hard to try to guess the most likely source of any Dortmund goal. With rumors of an exit coming soon enough, Mr. Haaland will look to add to his already impressive resume for a 20-year-old.

Porto (+600) at Juventus (-225) – 2.75 Total Goals – Porto Leads 2-1 on Aggregate

Porto was extremely impressive during the first leg, obtaining the advantage heading into the second leg. Juventus should win and are the heavy favorites here. Nevertheless, I think this will be closer than the odds above suggest “see the Best Bet below”. For DFS purposes, I do expect Juventus to have more of the ball and likely pile on more stats regardless of the final score. If Juventus were to lose this match, it would certainly cause us to entertain questions regarding the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Notable Goal Scoring Odds and Key Injuries

Note: Many of these players will not end up starting, but their goal odds are listed just in case. If they do not end up starting, disregard them. All odds are listed +300 or below and projected starters are listed in bold.

Talk about playing with house money. No one in the world expects Porto to win this match. However, they showed they could hold their own during the first leg in Portugal. Therefore, given the massive odds difference, I think this is worth a shot.

Wednesday 2/24 UCL Slate and DFS Gameplan

Let’s get ready for another day of the Champion’s League!

Gladbach (+800) at Manchester City (-335) – 3 Total Goals

Given the odds here, it is no surprise that Manchester City will be chalky. We will just have to see how the City starting lineup shakes out, but their attacking players will all be strong options. On the flip side, given the stellar defense that City has exhibited lately, I will fade Gladbach outside of any cheap defensemen on Fanduel, as necessary.

Real Madrid (+195) at Atalanta (+128) – 3 Total Goals

Manchester City’s shadow hangs over this slate. However, this other game has the same goal total. Of particular note, is that Real Madrid has an absolutely mind-boggling number of injured players. Star striker Karim Benzema, the team’s vocal leader in central defender and penalty kick taker Sergio Ramos, the legendary wingback Marcelo, and many more will be sidelined. In Bergamo, I sort of like Atalanta. At full strength, Real Madrid would win this match. Nonetheless, that is not the cards for today.

UCL Best Odds

*Ilkay Gundogan to Score* (+133) – 0.25 Units – “DraftKings Sportsbook”

DraftKings | FanDuel

The Betting Game Plan

There is no one hotter in the English Premier League than Ilkay Gundogan. A true box to box midfielder, he can get back and play terrific defense when needed. However, recently he has been flashing some exceptional skills when provided the opportunity to advance into a more attacking role. At the dirty age of thirty, Gundogan has upped his game from two goals last year in 31 matches to 11 goals this year over 19. Let’s take a stab at the magic continuing.

This article focuses on 2/23 UCL Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbook and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format. The goal is to gain an edge on the field at large.

Tuesday 2/23 UCL Slate and DFS Gameplan

The Champion’s League is back with another set of Tuesday/Wednesday matches. Let’s dig in below.

Chelsea (+188) at Atletico Madrid (+170) – 2.5 Total Goals

This should be a close match as the odds indicate. I would also expect a defensive battle, given Atletico Madrid’s preferred style of play.

Bayern Munich (-130) at Lazio (+340) – 3 Total Goals

Bayern is fairly short handed here, compared to last year, when they romped through the Champion’s League. Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller, and Benjamin Pavard lead the list of absentees. However, there is still enough firepower here for Bayern to show why they are the slate’s top favorite. Lazio, it was a good story, Ciro Immobile is great, but no way they advance here.

Notable Goal Scoring Odds and Key Injuries

Note: Many of these players will not end up starting, but their goal odds are listed just in case. If they do not end up starting, disregard them. All odds are listed +300 or below and projected starters are listed in bold.

Chelsea (+188) at Atletico Madrid (+170) Luis Suarez (+200), Olivier Giroud (+255), Timo Werner (+265), Moussa Dembele (+275), Tammy Abraham (+285), Joao Felix (+350), Christian Pulisic (+360), Angel Correa (+390), Mason Mount (+430), Callum Hudson-Odoi (+450), Hakim Ziyech (+480), Kai Havertz (+480), Marcos Llorente (+575)

Key Injuries

Chelsea: None

Atletico Madrid: Yannick Carrasco, Kieran Trippier “suspension”, Sime Vrsaljko, Hector Herrera, Yannick Carrasco

Bayern Munich (-130) at Lazio (+340) Robert Lewandowski (-150), Ciro Immobile (+150), Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (+180), Leroy Sane (+205), Kingsley Coman (+275), Leon Goretzka (+275), Joaquin Correa (+280), Luis Alberto (+370), Joshua Kimmich (+480)

Key Injuries

Bayern Munich: Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry, Douglas Costa, Corentin Tolisso, Benjamin Pavard, Tanguy Nianzou

Lazio: Stefan Radu

UCL Best Odds

*Joao Felix to Score* (+350) – 0.25 Units – “DraftKings Sportsbook”

DraftKings | FanDuel

The Betting Game Plan

So, Atletico Madrid is at home and favored here, but three Chelsea forwards have much higher scoring odds than Joao Felix? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Joao Felix is coming in at +350, which seems like a very fair deal.

This article focuses on 2/16 UCL Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbook and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format. The goal is to gain an edge on the field at large.

Tuesday 2/16 UCL Slate and DFS Gameplan

After a huge wait, the Champion’s League finally returns and does so with a pair of very interesting matches.

PSG (+240) at Barcelona (+100)

First, we have a rematch of the infamous “Remontada” where Barcelona overcame a 4-0 deficit to win 6-5 on aggregate against PSG in 2017.

It comes at a time when PSG is missing two of their top three players in Neymar and Angel Di Maria. Of PSG’s primary trio, only Kylian Mbappe will be active, with Mauro Icardi and Moise Kean likely filling the void. We will have to see how set pieces shake up, perhaps Marco Veratti will have a role.

At home at the Camp Nou, Barcelona is favored and needs to find a way to walk away with an advantage before travelling to the second leg in Paris. All eyes will be on their talisman Leo Messi, who does not have the huge goal scoring odds of slates past at +100. However, that still makes for the highest goal scoring odds on this slate. Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele should be up front, supporting Messi in the attack.

Liverpool (+128) at Leipzig (+205) “In Hungary”

The other game is fairly intriguing as well, as at the moment, once mighty Liverpool is in very poor form. All English teams are currently banned from travel to Germany due to UK Covid-19 variant, so this game will be played in Hungary. Despite their recent issues, Liverpool still have the third highest odds to win the Champion’s League at +800, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.

Despite losing Timo Werner over the summer, this Leipzig team has remained very solid. They are having a successful season in the Bundesliga and should be less impacted than Liverpool by the move to Hungary. Master tactician Julian Nagelsmann will be look to exploit his German counterpart Jurgen Klopp and hope Liverpool’s struggles continue. While Leipzig might not win the Champion’s League, they are more than capable of the upset here, if Liverpool comes out sloppy.

Notable Goal Scoring Odds and Key Injuries

Note: Many of these players will not end up starting, but their goal odds are listed just in case. If they do not end up starting, disregard them. All odds are listed +300 or below and projected starters are listed in bold.

PSG (+240) at Barcelona (+100) Lionel Messi (+100), Kylian Mbappe (+155), Antoine Griezmann (+195), Mauro Icardi (+200), Moise Kean (+235), Ousmane Dembele (+340), Pablo Sarabia (+400), Pedri (+510)

Key Injuries

PSG: Neymar “out”, Angel Di Maria “out”, Juan Bernat “out”

Barcelona: Ansu Fati “out”, Phillipe Coutinho “out”, Sergi Roberto “out”, Ronald Araujo “out”, Martin Braithwaite “doubtful”, Gerald Pique “GTD”

Liverpool (+128) at Leipzig (+205) Mohammed Salah (+118), Sadio Mane (+195), Alexander Sorloth (+215), Hee-Chan Hwang (+235), Yussuf Poulsen (+235), Roberto Firmino (+260), Divock Origi (+300), Christopher Nkunku (+330), Dani Olmo (+330), Emil Forsberg (+330), Marcel Sabitzer (+330), Xherdan Shaquiri (+440), Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain (+460), Angelino (+510)

Key Injuries

Liverpool: Diego Jota “out”, Naby Keita “out”, Virgil Van Dyk “out”, Joe Gomez “out”, Joel Matip “out”, Fabinho “doubtful”

Leipzig: Dominik Szoboszlai “out”

UCL Best Odds

*Ousmane Dembele to Score* (+340) – 0.25 Units – “DraftKings Sportsbook”

DraftKings | FanDuel

The Betting Game Plan

It seems Ousmane Dembele’s goal scoring odds are coming in way higher than any of the other forwards in both matches. I am not sure that’s exactly fair. Nevertheless, given these odds, rather than roster him in DFS, it is a good way to get some exposure to him, if desired.

This article focuses on 12/8 UCL Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbook and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so we can gain an edge on the field at large.

Tuesday 12/8 UCL Slate and DFS Gameplan

It’s time to put an end to the Champion’s League Group Stages with the first half of Matchweek 6/6, beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Note: Projected starters are highlighted in bold. Goal odds of all potential starters are included, but if a player is not in the starting lineup, disregard his scoring odds.

PSG (-1000)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Kylian Mbappe (-245), Neymar (-195), Moise Kean (-137), Angel Di Maria (-104)

PSG finds themselves in a huge game, where they are heavily favored against lowly Istanbul Basaksehir. Collectively, they have the highest goal scoring odds on the slate, in a must win matchup. Their attackers should all be popular.

Chelsea (-345)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Timo Werner (-120), Tammy Abraham (-103), Olivier Giroud (-103), Christian Pulisic (+135), Kai Havertz (+180), Mason Mount (+280), Billy Gilmour (+390)

We will have to see how the lineup shakes out. I doubt that Olivier Giroud would get a third straight start at age 35. So chances are we see Tammy Abraham in the mix. With Hakim Ziyech’s injury, Mason Mount should have control of all the set pieces once again. Finally, young talent Billy Gilmour might be making his first start of the season. That is something to watch for if looking for a cheap flier, particularly on FanDuel for $7.

Dynamo Kyiv (-124)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Viktor Tsyhankov (+140), Vladyslav Supriaha (+160), Benjamin Verbic (+175), Gerson Rodrigues (+190), Clayton (+205), Franck Boli (+260)

Both teams in this game are absolutely terrible. However, the Hungarian team Ferenvcaros is even worse than Dynamo Kyiv. Thus, maybe this is a spot for some savings if you want to pick out a couple bodies from Dynamo to go stars and scrubs.

Manchester United (+200) at RB Leipzig (+120)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Alexander Sorloth (+175), Youssef Poulsen (+195), Bruno Fernandes (+195), Marcus Rashford (+225), Emil Forsberg (+275), Christopher Nkunku (+275), Dani Olmo (+275), Marcel Sabitzer (+275), Mason Greenwood (+280), Donny van de Beek (+450)

This is probably the best game of the day from a raw perspective. Both teams are dead even on nine points, so this is likely an elimination game. Manchester United will be without both Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial. They will need another huge Champion’s League game from Marcus Rashford and/or Bruno and Mason Greenwood, to help them move on. Meanwhile, Leipzig is favored here and their attackers are certainly in play, as well.

Juventus (+235) at Barcelona (+110)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Leo Messi (+118), Cristiano Ronaldo (+123), Antoine Greizmann (+180), Alvaro Morata (+195), Martin Braithwaite (+205), Federico Chiesa (+235), Paulo Dybala (+240), Phillipe Coutinho (+260), Federico Bernardeschi (+275), Trincao (+375), Pedri (+375)

Messi v. Ronaldo. Barcelona will win this group either way on goal difference, so this one is simply for pride. It might be the last time these two ever face each other again, based on how the future plays out. However, this game might not exactly be the high paced shootout that it would’ve been years ago.

Sevilla (+130) at Rennes (+220)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Lucas Ocampos (+215), M’Baye Niang (+215), Luuk de Jong (+235), Carlos Fernandez (+235), Youssef En-Nesyri (+245), Oussama Idrissi (+275), Oscar Rodriguez (+375), Franco Vazquez (+420)

Sevilla clinched a spot in the Round of Sixteen but cannot win their group. Therefore, they have nothing to play for here and it will be all backups. This is a stayaway spot for me unless it’s last man in.

Best Bet

The Betting Game Plan

PSG and Chelsea come in as the big favorites on the slate and we should be able to rely on them here. Because the total odds aren’t great, feel free to add on something else from another sport to your parlay as desired.

This article focuses on 12/1 UCL Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbook and FanDuel and DraftKings Daily Fantasy. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so we can gain an edge on the field at large.

Tuesday 12/1 UCL Slate and DFS Gameplan

It’s time for Matchweek 5/6 of the Champion’s League Group Stages with a six game slate beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET.

A couple of teams already have their spots in the Round of Sixteen all locked up. However, at least this week, only Bayern Munich has actually clinched their group’s top spot. As a result, they are the only team with nothing to play for and should be resting starters.

Note: Projected starters are highlighted in bold. Goal odds of all potential starters are included, but if a player is not in the starting lineup, disregard his scoring odds.

Atalanta (-560)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Duvan Zapata (-177), Luis Muriel (-139), Joseph Illicic (-132), Alejandro Gomez (-108), Remo Freuler (+188)

Atalanta is the biggest favorite on the slate by quite a lot. Their attacking players will be cash game staples.

Alejandro Gomez and Duvan Zapata will likely be the chalkiest but be sure not to sleep on Joseph Illicic if in! If not, Luis Muriel has fairly high goal scoring odds as well.

Man City (-162)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Gabriel Jesus (+135), Raheem Sterling (+160), Kevin De Bruyne (+195), Riyad Mahrez (+205), Phil Foden (+220), Fernan Torres (+220), Bernardo Silva (+325)

We will just have to see how the lineup shakes out here. Phil Foden has had the hot hand and Torres has been slowly coming along. Riyad Mahrez is coming off a hat trick this weekend, but is not projected to start. Kevin De Bruyne remains a strong play, as always.

Liverpool (-148)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Mohammed Salah (-110), Sadio Mane (+118), Diego Jota (+125), Divock Origi (+185), Robert Firmino (+195), Dusan Tadic (+240)

Liverpool has been fairly disappointing over the last week. First, losing at home to Atalanta 2-0 in the Champion’s League and then a 1-1 tie over the weekend against Brighton. If Diego Jota is in, he would be my favorite play from this team as he is red hot and scoring all their goals. However, in terms of stacking, they are a fairly hard team to trust at the moment.

Atletico Madrid (-120)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Joao Felix (+160), Angelo Correa (+235), Yannick Carrasco (+285), Marcos Llorente (+360)

Atletico Madrid was probably the most disappointing of any team last week. They were as big as a -560 favorite as of game time against Lokomotiv Moscow, only to put up a scoreless draw.

They have a chance to bounce back here against a Bayern Munich squad likely resting players with nothing to play for. Luis Suarez and Diego Costa are not in the match squad, making the Atletico lineup a bit more predictable.

Inter Milan (+120) at Gladbach (+205)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Romelu Lukaku (+110), Lautaro Martinez (+150), Alexis Sanchez (+170), Marcus Thuram (+200), Alassane Plea (+200), Breel Embolo (+210), Ivan Perisic (+255), Lars Stindl (+260), Patrick Hermann (+275)

I had mentioned how Atletico Madrid was disappointing last week. As for Inter Milan, their game turned out to be a total disaster, as well. First, they allowed an early penalty and then Arturo Vidal got a red card for cursing out the referee, leading to a loss against Real Madrid.

They will have a tough game here against a resilient Gladbach team. The Germans will finally be returning forward Alassane Plea “pronounced like Play-a” and will be at full strength.

Olympiakos (+230) at Marseille (+130)

Key Goal Scoring Odds: Dario Benedetto (+175), Florian Thauvin (+180), Dmitri Payet (+265)

This group continues to churn out some bad games. With this one, the trend continues, as outside goaltenders and cheap defenders, there is not a lot to target. It would be amazing if we had diminutive Olympiakos midfielder Mathieu Valbuena, who is all of a sudden half price on DraftKings at $5,400. Unfortunately, he is out injured.

Marseille has a shot at their first win of UCL, but Olympiakos plays slow, grinding defense. Their attackers are really cheap on DraftKings, if looking for a very contrarian large field flyer.

The Betting Game Plan

With so few huge favorites, this is one of the tougher UCL slates to bet on. However, we can lock in Atalanta and beyond that, since it is hard to trust Liverpool right now, let’s roll with Man City. Perhaps famous last words, but I guess we will find out.
