Welcome to this week's edition of the Saturday Slapshot.   On this fine beautiful Saturday, we have a full day of hockey. This article will be solely focused on the main slate which starts at 7pm EST. We have some great games tonight so it should be a fun NHL DFS slate.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Joseph Woll/Matt Murray vs. Columbus Blue Jackets – With Ilya Samsanov getting the nod last night, we'll get either Joseph Woll or Matt Murray in net tonight for Toronto. I'm fine with either of them as Toronto is a massive favorite tonight against a bad Blue Jackets team. While Columbus can occasionally put up a big number, that shouldn't happen tonight against a solid Maple Leafs team. Feel confident in starting either of these guys.

Connor Hellebuyck vs. Chicago Blackhawks - Another team that is a massive favorite tonight will be the Winnipeg Jets as they get to take on the lowly Chicago Blackhawks. Helle...

Welcome to this week's edition of the Saturday Slapshot.   For a Saturday, we have a nice-sized 9-game slate of NHL DFS. There are some great spots for offense tonight that we'll want to take advantage of.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Logan Thompson ($7.6K DK/$7.4k FD) vs. New York Islanders – The Islanders' offense is a mess right now. Over the last 2 weeks, they've scored just 15 goals in 8 games. They're coming off a win last night, but they scored just 2 goals in that one. Until their offense starts clicking again, we'll want to target goalies against them. The price for Thompson is really nice as it's in the mid $7k range. That makes him playable in GPP's tonight.

John Gibson ($7.8k DK/$7.6k FD) vs. Arizona Coyotes –We have a matchup here of 2 teams that have combined for 72 points. For context, the Bruins have 80 points. Neither of these offenses is any good, especially the Coyotes' offense...

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of Between the Benches.   After an 11-game slate night, we have just a modest 5-game slate tonight of NHL DFS. At first glance, we have some pretty glaring mismatches on the board tonight that we'll want to attack.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Andrei Vasilevskiy ($8.5K DK/$8.1k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens – This is probably the biggest mismatch of the night as the Tampa Bay Lightning take on the lowly Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens are coming into this tilt struggling, scoring just 1.83 goals per game over the last 2 weeks. Over that stretch, they've won just once in 6 games. They are a team night in and night out that we'll want to consider a goalie against as they just aren't a strong offense.

With Vasilevskiy, we have one of the more consistent goalies of the last decade. A goalie that normally averages a GAA of 2.6 or less and a save % north of .900. This season ...

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  With just 5 games on tap tonight, our options are going to be somewhat limited. We also have a handful of teams playing on the tail end of a back-to-back. That said, it should be a fun slate .

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Matt Murray ($8.1K DK/$8.4k FD) vs. Calgary Flames – The Flames showed last night that they are definitely not the same Flames team of years past. Against a poor defensive Blue Jackets team, they mustered just 1 goal, leaving plenty of NHL DFS lineups to rot. Tonight, we'll use the Flames a bit differently. We're going to attack them with a goalie.

Matt Murray is coming into this game off arguably the game of his career. Against the powerful Stars team, he stopped all 44 shots on his way to a 43 DK performance. I'm not calling for a repeat performance, but we know he has upside and won't break the bank at $8.1k on DK. Murray has been strong all year ...

Welcome to Tuesday's edition of Between the Benches.   We have a nice-sized 9-game slate tonight.  We have some lopsided matchups tonight so there should be plenty of offense to go around.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Tristan Jarry ($8.4K DK/$8.4k FD) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets – Even though they have some nice shiny weapons on offense, this Blue Jackets team just hasn't been getting it done. Over the last 2 weeks, the Blue Jackets are scoring just 2.20 goals per game on around 30 shots per game. Their 7.59% shooting percentage is one of the lowest of any team playing tonight.

With Jarry, we have a goalie on a roll right now. He hasn't given up more than 3 goals in any of his last 6 games. On DK, he's had at least 19 points in all 5 of those games. This seems like one of those lopsided spots that we'll want to take advantage of both offensively and with our goalie. The Pens are massive favorites...

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  There are a couple of early games today but this article will be solely focused on the massive 11-game NHL DFS slate we have tonight.  There are some lopsided matchups that we’ll want to take advantage of tonight as well as some of the more explosive offenses in the league taking the ice.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Ilya Sorokin ($8.4K DK/$8.4k FD) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets – Ilya Sorokin’s season stats have been amazing.  Through 11 starts he has just a 2.09 GAA and a .936 save percentage.  He’s a little more expensive than I’d normally like to pay for a goalie, but between his play this season and the matchup, he should be one of the leading scorers for goalies tonight.

Sorokin and the Islanders are heavy favorites tonight vs. a Blue Jackets team that hasn’t been doing a whole lot in the way of scoring recently.  Over the last 2 weeks, the Bl...

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Saturday Slapshot.   I’ll be focusing on tonight’s nice-sized 9-game main slate of NHL DFS on DraftKings and FanDuel.  We’re now a couple of weeks into the 2022/2023 season and trends are somewhat becoming clearer.  We have some lopsided matchups tonight that we’ll hopefully be able to take full advantage of.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Tristan Jarry ($8.4K DK/$8.6k FD) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets – This is a little bit more than I normally like to spend on my goalie, but you have to love the spot for Tristan Jarry tonight.  Through 3 games so far this season, Jarry’s play has been exceptional.  So far in this young year, he’s sporting a 1.68 GAA and a .952 save %.  While that high of a save % is probably not sustainable, the matchup tonight is a good one for him.

The Blue Jackets' offense has yet to really click on all cylinders and...

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL DFS slate on Fanduel and DraftKings.  Tonight we have a solid-looking 9 game slate.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

Stuart Skinner ($8.2k DK/$7.6k FD) vs. Ottawa Senators – I’ll start by saying I like the price on FanDuel a whole lot more today.  That said, he’s a solid play on both sites tonight as he’s taking on a Senators squad that has an offense that is anemic at times.  Over the last month, while playing sparingly, they’ve mustered just 2 goals per game. Their poor goal numbers can also be attributed to them just not getting much in the way of high danger chances as they have just 8 per game over the last month.

Many of their chances are from the outside where the goalie is getting a good look.  In Skinner we have someone that has performed well at both the NHL and AHL levels.  In 8 games...

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  I’m Jared and I’ll be your host.  Tonight we have a nice sized 9 game slate where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL slate on Fanduel and Draftkings.

Before we dive in I want to highlight some terms you’ll see in my article that may be foreign to you:

  • Corsi – Any shot attempt (goals, shots on net, misses and blocks) outside of the shootout
  • Even Strength – Play where both teams have the same number of players (including goalies) on the ice. Includes 5v5, 4v4, 3v3
  • Power Play – Play where the team has more players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 5v4, 5v3, 4v3
  • Penalty Kill – Play where the team has fewer players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 4v5, 3v4, 3v5

Goaltending

Tristan Jarry ($8k DK/$8.1k FD) vs. Montreal Canadiens – Triston Jarry is one of the hottest goalies in the game.  Over his past 9 games he has a save % of .939 and has given up just 1.66 goals per game.  Outside of his last game vs. an explosive Edmonton offense he had been above 20 DK points in 6 consecutive games.

In a matchup against a Canucks team that is only scoring a hair over 2 goals per game, I really like Jarry’s chances of getting past his dud vs. Edmonton and back on the saddle w/ a game above 20 DK points again.  There’s a strong chance for a ceiling type game from Jarry due to the Vancouver’s high shot volume and low shooing %.  They are averaging 38 shots per game with just a 5.58 shooting percentage.

Alex Nedeljkovic ($7.7k DK/$7.5k FD) vs. New York Islanders – The Red Wings are riding a 4 game winning streak, with a lot of it due to the solid play of Nedeljkovic.  He has been superb of late.  In his last 3 games he has DK points of 32, 24.8, and 40.8.  The only concern with Nedeljkovic tonight is that the Islanders play at a slow pace and don’t shoot the puck much.

Over their last 5 games they are averaging just 25 shots per game.  That said, they’re also averaging less than a goal per game during that stretch.  The Islanders are getting past their COVID issues but tonight’s not going to be their night.  Look for Nedeljkovic to be one of the top goalies by the end of the night.

Marc-Andre Fleury ($7.3k DK/$7.3 FD) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins – As a Rangers fan I hope I’m wrong here but I think they struggle tonight.  They’re playing their third game in 4 days and are on the back side of a back to back. In Fleury we’re getting a very affordable goalie who is in the midst of a pretty good stretch of goaltending.  Over his last 7 games he has .947 saver percentage and is giving up just 1.69 goals per game.  With my expectation that the Rangers have some tired legs I expect Fleury to have one of his better nights of the year.

Stacks

Colorado 1 (Mackinnon/Landeskog/Rantanen) + Toews or Maker

Colorado gets an extremely favorable matchup tonight vs. a Senators team that is giving up close to 5 goals per game over the past 2 weeks.  Senators are one of my favorite teams to stack against because they are one of the bottom feeders in the NHL.  Over the last 2 weeks they have a corsi % of just 41%.  In comparison, the Avalanche are at 57%.  Anything below 50 isn’t great, but when you are approaching 40% you’re bad.  Very bad.

In net for Ottawa tonight should be Filip Gustavsson.  Over his last 5 games he has an .887 save % and is giving up more than 4 goals per game.  This stack is extremely expensive and will be very popular.  But they are in just too good of a spot to pass up. If you want to go a different route w/ Colorado tonight I do also love their second line with Kadri and Nichushkin.  Both guys have been playing extremely well together and come at a fraction of the cost of the top line.

Nashville 1 (Granlund/Duchene/Forsberg) + Josi or Fabbri

This line is very affordable tonight on DK and gets a great matchup.  Montreal is giving up close to 40 shots per game over the last 2 weeks.  That’s just a ton of volume.  While Jake Allen is serviceable goalie, he’s not someone that can handle that much volume without giving up a handful of goals.  His GAA over his past 5 games is north of 3.

This top line for Nashville is playing extremely well.  Over the past 5 games Forsberg has 6 goals while Granlund and Duchene have combined for 11 points with 9 assists.  They have a chance to put up a big number tonight vs. a poor defensive team.

Carolina 3 (Svechnikov/Kotkaniemi/Stepan)

I don’t have the warm and fuzzies about this pick, but the Sabres are just so bad right now.  Over their past 7 games they have a goals against average of 5 and a corsi of 47%.  That’s just downright awful.  While the Hurricanes aren’t playing their best hockey right now, they have shown explosiveness in the past.  There’s no better slump buster in the league than the Buffalo Sabres.

Svechnikov is one of their best players and even though the team is struggling to score some goals, he’s still firing away on net.  Over his past 5 games he’s averaging almost 3.5 shots per game.  His line mates are extremely cheap and if Svechnikov can connect on a pair of goals tonight with them we have a chance to break away from the pack at a low cost.  Carolina gets back on track tonight and puts up a very large number.

Other stacks (Detroit 1, Pit 1 and 2, Min 1, Tor 1 and 2, Was 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Roman Josi – Nashville Predators
  • Kris Letang – Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Tyler Myers – Vancouver Canucks
  • Seth Jones – Chicago Blackhawks
  • Jacob Slavin – Carolina Hurricanes
  • Adam Fox – New York Rangers

Summary

We have a fun looking slate tonight.  4 of the 9 games have a total of at least 6.  Some of the worst defensive teams are in action tonight and I’m going to make it a point to attack them.  The Toronto/Minnesota game tonight highlights two of the more solid teams in the league.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

NHL Playoff Preview (First Round)

Welcome to Keith's NHL Playoff Preview (First Round). A little different than my daily game pick articles. The NHL Playoffs are finally here! After a grueling 56-game season we are down to 16 teams. With the nuances of scheduling this year, each team will have a mini bracket within their division and then each team who makes it out of their division will be re-seeded for the Final 4. Not too many surprises with who made the playoffs. Here are the 16 teams who will be playing in the First Round:

We have some great First Round matchups. I will preview each series, post each series price and give my predictions. I will also keep a tracker for my entire slate of playoff bets, as I have some futures on who makes it out of their division, as well as who wins Lord Stanley. I will provide that info at the end as well as some general thoughts for betting the NHL Playoffs. Without further ado, let's dive into the series.
