Welcome to Wednesday's edition of Between the Benches.  After a few days of some really nice-sized slates, tonight we're stuck with just a 3-game slate of NHL DFS. To make matters worse, only 2 of the 6 teams playing tonight have any hope of making the playoffs. That said, we should see some decent hockey tonight and the sloppiness of the bad teams may make for a high-scoring affair.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Petr Mrazek vs. Detroit Red Wings – I've been riding good ole Petr Mrazek quite a bit over the last couple of weeks. Although it hasn't always worked out, he's been extremely cheap and has rarely thrown out a complete dud. Since the start of February, he's been in single-digit DK points just 4 times in 9 starts. So more than 50% of the time, we've been able to get into the double-digit DK point area. Considering he's only $7k, I'm willing to take that risk. Especially considering the Red Wings are ...

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of Between the Benches.  On this first day of March, the NHL has blessed us with a 6-game slate of NHL DFS. That's way more than we are used to on a Wednesday and this is a solid-looking slate. We'll want to keep an eye on lines as we get closer to puck drop as trades are happening and things can change in an instant.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Connor Ingram ($6.9K DK/$7.2k FD) vs. Dallas Stars – I'm willing to go risky with my goalie tonight, especially in this Coyotes/Stars game. The Dallas offense has not been good. Over the last 2 weeks, they're scoring just over 2 goals per game. With the number of shots that Arizona gives up plus the low shooting % of the Stars right now, there's a ton of upside in playing Ingram tonight. At his price point, we don't need much to return value and he should be able to do it with ease.

Frederik Andersen ($7.8k DK/$8.2k FD) vs. ...

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of Between the Benches.   Tonight we have a very manageable 5-game slate of NHL DFS. We also have one of the most glaring spots for offense as we've seen all year. We'll need to make the decision to chase the chalk or fade the chalk.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Ilya Sorokin ($7.5K DK/$8k FD) vs. Ottawa Senators – This game features 2 struggling teams as both teams have been playing sub-.500 hockey over the last couple of weeks. Both teams have also seen their offenses essentially disappear. I'm going to lean toward Sorokin in this matchup. The Sens are scoring just 2.17 goals per game over the last couple of weeks on around 37 shots on goal. With the volume they're putting on the net and their measly 5.91 shooting %, this sets up nicely for Sorokin to have a high-ceiling type of game. With his price, I really like him for GPP's tonight.

Stuart Skinner ($8.5k D...

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  Tonight, we have a 10-game slate of NHL DFS to navigate through. At first glance, this is shaping up to be an entertaining slate that is loaded with options. We have a bunch of strong offenses in great spots. Expect a high-scoring slate.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Igor Shesterkin ($8.2K DK/$7.9k FD) vs. Philadelphia – With the recent play of both of these teams, this appears to be a lopsided affair. The Flyers are coming into this one 2-3-2 in their last 7, while the Rangers are coming in 5-1 over their last 6. The Rangers are finally playing the style of hockey everyone expected them to play this year.

Shesterkin has returned to his Vezina-winning form. He's won 5-straight games and has allowed just 1 goal in 3 of those games. One of those games was against the potent Maple Leafs offense, a game that saw Marner's point streak go by the wayside. Even on the road, ...

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  We have a monster of a slate tonight with 12 games on tap. While the marquis matchup of the night will be the Bruins vs. Avalanche, I'll be looking elsewhere for offense as both teams can shut down offenses.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

NHL DFS Goaltending

Karel Vejmelka ($7.3K DK/$7k FD) vs. Vancouver Canucks – Karel Vejmlelka is one of the more volatile goalies in the NHL. If you have played him in NHL DFS before, you're well aware of the swings he'll give you. On any given night, he can net well over 20 DK points thanks to the volume of shots he gets. He can also net you single-digit points just like he did the other night vs. the Kings. I'm more of a GPP player and he'll be my lock for GPP's tonight thanks to his price point and upside.

Vitek Vanecek ($8.3k DK/$8.5k FD) vs. Philadelphia Flyers – We saw some struggles out of Vanecek on Thursday night vs. Nashville as he g...

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL DFS slate on Fanduel and DraftKings.  Tonight we have a solid-looking 9 game slate.

Let’s dig in and see if we can make some money.

Goaltending

Igor Shesterkin ($8.4k DK/$8.1k FD) vs. Arizona Coyotes – This is about as high of a salary for a goalie as I’ll go.  While the Coyotes have been scoring more goals of late, it hasn’t been against the stiffest of competition.  In the games they scored more than 3 goals, they were facing teams like the Canadiens and Blackhawks.  Last night they were shut out by a solid defensive Islanders team.

While the Rangers aren’t a defensive juggernaut, they have one of the best goalies in the NHL in Shesterkin.  Since November 1, Shesterkin has just 2 games under 10 DK points.  He has a .938 save % on the year and has to be in the Vezina conversation.  After struggling a bit to start the game vs. Maple Leafs on Wednesday Shesterkin settled down nicely to finish the game with 35 saves and a Win.  There’s a very real chance he makes the Coyotes go back-to-back games without a goal.  Love the spot tonight for Igor.

Jacob Markstrom ($7.7k DK/$7.8k FD) vs. Edmonton Oilers – Something is wrong with the Oilers and until they fix it, we can attack them with goalies.  Over the last month, what should be a dynamic NHL offense, this team has mustered just 2.29 goals per game.  Of the 18 teams on tonight’s slate, that’s the lowest number.  Now some of this can be attributed to scheduling conflicts due to covid, but I’m still going to attack them until they prove me wrong.

In Markstrom, we have someone that has been up and down this season.  At times he’s been brutal, but at times he’s been remarkable, as evidenced by his 28 save performance vs. the Panthers team that had been coming into the game scoring goals at will.  Because it’s the Oilers, this is a risky spot.  That said, I do like the spot tonight and Markstrom has a chance to be one of the top goalies on the night.

After those 2 goalie gets a little murky.  Whoever gets the nod tonight for Minnesota should do well against a Blackhawks team that is anemic right now.  Darcy Kuemper is also in a good spot tonight but he’s very pricey.  I just can’t live with myself paying $8.5k for him on DK tonight.  That’s just too much, even with a matchup against a poor Canadiens squad.  I’d rather take my chances with  Markstrom tonight.

Stacks

I don’t need to tell you how good of a spot it is for the Avalanche tonight.  Montreal is dreadful and giving up more than 4 goals per game over their last 8 games.  They are one of the worst teams in the NHL. The top line of MacKinnon, Landeskog, and Rantanen is always in play and tonight is no different.  They are in a great spot tonight but are extremely pricey.  If you can fit them, go for it.

Calgary 1 (Elias Lindholm, Matthew Tkachuk, Johnny Gaudreau)

I highlighted above that the Oilers have been struggling offensively.  That actually pales in comparison to how bad they’ve been on the defensive side.  Of the 18 teams on tonight’s NHL DFS slate, no team has a higher goals against average over the last month than the Oilers.  As a team, you stand no chance of winning if you are giving up 4.71 goals per game.  Their goalies have been atrocious as they have an 84.86 save percentage over that period.

While such a low number like that isn’t necessarily sustainable and there will be regression, it’s still something that we want to attack.  This top-line for Calgary is still very affordable.  The most expensive player in this stack is Gaudreau at $6.7k on DK.  My priorities here are going to be Tkachuk and Gaudreau.  The two have combined for 14 points, 40 scoring chances, and 20 high danger chances over their last 5 games.  I’m not overly interested in any of the defensemen from this team.

New York Rangers 1 (Kreider/Zibanejad/Kaako) + Fox

This could be the homer in me, but I love the spot for the Rangers tonight.  They struggled in Carolina against the Hurricanes last night but get to go back to the Garden tonight against a much lesser opponent in the Coyotes.  My priority with this stack is Kreider.  He is red hot right now as he has 5 goals in his last 5 games.  Over those 5 games, he has 14 high danger chances and 19 scoring chances.  The duo of Zibanejad and Kreider have been extremely lethal this season and love pairing them together tonight.

Carolina 2 (Trocheck/Svechnikov/Niederreiter)  + Slavin

My final favorite stack tonight brings us to Newark, NJ with the Carolina Hurricanes.  Goaltending for the Devils has been a struggle of late as they’ve let in 3.5 goals per game over the past month.  With Blackwood expected to be in the net today, I love this sport for the Hurricanes.  Over his last 10 starts, he’s failed to give up less than 3 goals just once.

While the Hurricanes’ offense is always tough to gauge, I really like their second line tonight.  The pairing of Trocheck and Svechnikov have combined for 10 points over their past 5 games and 30 scoring chances.  Slavin makes a nice compliment to this stack as he’s only $4.3k on DK and he’s getting us some ancillary stats as he’s averaging more than 4 shots + blocks per game.

Other stacks (Min 1, Tor 1, Ari 2, Ott 1, Was 1, Col 2, TB 1 and 2, SJ 1)

Top Value Defenseman

  • Christopher Tanev
  • Kris Russell
  • David Savard
  • Calvin De Haan
  • Moritz Seider
  • Ben Chiarot
  • Adam Pelech
  • Scott Mayfield

Summary

We have some solid spots to attack tonight.  I didn’t write them up, but I love Minnesota again tonight.  They made for a profitable night last night and get the same matchup tonight, but at home and vs. a lesser goalie.  Their top line of Hartman and Kaprizov would be the place to go, but they are pricey.  Another spot I didn’t write up is Washington vs. Ottawa.  Ovechkin should add to his tally and get closer in his chase of the great one.  There are a lot of great spots for offense tonight and it has the makings of a very high-scoring night.

Welcome to the Saturday Slapshot.  I’m Jared and I’ll be your host.  Tonight we have a massive 12 game slate where I’ll be highlighting some of my top plays for tonight’s NHL slate on Fanduel and Draftkings.

Before we dive in I want to highlight some terms you’ll see in my article that may be foreign to you:

  • Corsi – Any shot attempt (goals, shots on net, misses and blocks) outside of the shootout
  • Even Strength – Play where both teams have the same number of players (including goalies) on the ice. Includes 5v5, 4v4, 3v3
  • Power Play – Play where the team has more players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 5v4, 5v3, 4v3
  • Penalty Kill – Play where the team has fewer players on the ice than their opponent due to penalties. Includes 4v5, 3v4, 3v5

Goaltending

Andrei Vasilevskiy ($7.7k DK/$8.7k FD) vs. Florida Panthers – Tonight we’re getting Vasilevskiy in a spot where he can put up a ton of points for us.  The Panthers shoot the puck, and they shoot the puck a lot.  Over the last 2 weeks they’ve been shooting the puck almost 37 times again.  While there is a good chance they put a puck or 2 behind Vasilevskiy tonight, there’s also a great chance that Vasilevskiy gets us over 30 saves.

In looking at Vasilevskiy’s stats this year he’s been extremely solid.  He has a 2.35 GAA and a .920 save %.  Both extremely solid numbers.  We’re getting a goalie here who has been over $8k at times this season so we have a bit of a discount.  Lightning are slight favorites in this one and I do expect them to come out on top thanks to the solid goaltending of Vasilevskiy.

Robin Lehner ($8.1k DK/$8.4k FD) vs. Vancouver Canucks – I’ve been riding Lehner quite a bit this season.  The Golden Knights give up a high volume of shots and that’s what we like to see for our goaltenders in DFS.  Especially our goalies that are solid between the pipes.  On the year Lehner has a near .920 save % and has only giving up 2.72 goals per game.  He has more than 31 saves per game and that’s big for us.  Since the end of October he’s had only 1 game under 15 DK points.  He’s been solid for us and I’m going to keep riding him tonight.

Igor Shesterkin ($7.9k DK/$8.1k FD) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets – The only reason the Rangers are 4 games over .500 this year is due to the solid goaltending of Shesterkin.  Nightly he faces a barrage of shots and has been successful in turning most of them away.  Rangers have been giving up close to 38 shots per game over the past 2 weeks.  In their last game against Florida they gave up 45 shots and Shesty was able to turn away 42 of them.

While the Blue Jackets offense is nowhere near the same level of the Panthers, I do expect them to get a ton of shots through to the Shesty tonight with Shesty turning almost all of them away.  Shesterkin is my favorite goalie on the night.

Stacks

I’m going to start by saying that the duo of Auston Matthews and William Nylander present the most upside of any pairing tonight.  They face a team in the Sabres that has come back to earth after a really solid start.  If you decide to go that route tonight I can’t blame you.  My goal here is to provide you with other options and that’s what I’m going to do.

Nashville 1 (Granlund/Kunin/Duchene/Josi)

Let’s get this out of the way.  The Coyotes are bad.  Very, very bad.  They have one of the wort corsi %’s of any team playing tonight.  Over the last 2 weeks they have a corsi % of less than 42%.  If they’re on the ice I plan on targeting them w/ an opposing line.  Tonight I’m going to target them with the top line for Nashville.

Matt Duchene has been playing extremely well over the last couple of weeks.  He has goals in 6 of his last 8 games and stands an excellent chance of getting one tonight too.  My 2 locks from this stack are Granlund and Duchene as they correlate at even strength and the power play.  If I need the salary savings tonight, I’ll also look to add in Kunin but he’s not a must.

Ottawa 1 (Norris/Tkachuk/Sanford/Chabot)

The Penguins are not a solid defensive team.  Over the last 2 weeks they have been giving up close to 38 shots per game.  Tonight in net they expect to have Casey DeSmith.  I just don’t see DeSmith as someone that can handle that type of volume. He’s played in only 2 games this year and has given up 4 and 5 goals.

If DeSmith does in fact play tonight, the Senators become my favorite stack of the night.  To go deeper on that thought, Brady Tkachuk becomes my favorite play of the night.  Over the last 2 weeks he’s been firing on net often as he’s averaging more than 4 shots per game.  The duo of Tkachuk and Norris should find success tonight.

Minnesota 1 (Eriksson Ek/Foligno/Fiala/Spurgeon)

Another team that I enjoy attacking is the Seattle Kraken.  It’s been a struggle for them in their inaugural season.  They’ve been giving up more than 3.6 goals per game on the year and it’s been even worst than that of late.  Over the last 2 weeks that’s ballooned to more than 4 per game.  I had a tough time choosing between the top 2 lines of Minnesota and I wouldn’t fault you for going with line 2.  Their top line is just playing just a bit better of late.  Foligno is a great value as he’s only $3.4k on DK and is someone that has shown the ability to put the puck in the net.

Other stacks (Colorado 1, Winnipeg 1, Detroit 1, New York 1, LA 2, Vegas 1)

Top Defenseman

  • Zach Werenski – Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Adam Fox – New York Rangers
  • Brent Burns – San Jose Sharks
  • Ben Chiarot – Montreal Canadiens
  • Mario Ferraro – San Jose Sharks

Summary

We have one of our biggest slates of the year tonight with 12 games on tap.  While playing a guy like Matthews makes a ton of sense tonight, he’s the only forward priced over $9k and I will more than likely fade.  My plan tonight is to go with a more balanced approach to my lineup as we have some fairly priced stacks in prime spots.

Good luck and hope to see you in the green!

NHL Betting Picks Thursday 5/6

Welcome to Keith's NHL Betting Picks Thursday 5/6. The Model bounced back going 2-0 last night. The Golden Knights needed OT to finish the Wild with a nice Pietrangelo finisher. The Jets absolutely dominated the Flames winning 4-0, a nice momentum building win leading to playoffs. With the Habs losing to the Sens it is also setting up a Leafs-Habs first round matchup, which is what everyone wants. Also, that Rangers/Caps game was electric. 3 fights off the opening faceoff, 6 fights in the first period, Wilson with an 'upper-body' injury in the 2nd, Buchnevich cross-checking Mantha in the face. I mean look at the Caps box after the 6th fight.

This game had quite the playoff/revenge vibe and I loved every second of it. Playoffs are right around the corner let's finish off this regular season strong.

We have 6 games on the NHL slate tonight. Let's take a look at the updated profitability and over win percentages for the teams playing today.

Welcome to Keith's NHL Betting Picks Saturday 4/3. The Model went 2-1, technically 2-2 if you count my extremely biased Devils ML play that I only took because I was at the game. I still don't know how that Avs/Blues over didn't hit, but at least we got Coyotes ML and our dog Sharks ML. Not a bad night.

NHL Betting Picks Thursday 4/1

Welcome to Keith's NHL Betting Picks Thursday 4/1. An easy 1-0 day for The Model last night with Toronto easily beating Winnipeg 3-1. Both of the leans hit too with Colorado dummying Arizona 9-3 and the over hitting before the 1st period ended, and LA as a +190 dog beating Vegas 4-2. I got ratted from Tuesday or else I would've took those. Of course that happens. Whatever, on to today.
