This article focuses on NHL DFS Picks for 11/5 on DraftKings and FanDuel. Both sites have fairly different scoring formats, particularly with the recent changes on DraftKings. We consider tournament tactics, statistics, pricing, and attempt to tackle this highly variable Daily Fantasy format so we can gain an edge on the field at large. 11/5 NHL – Main Slate

Top Four Lines

Boston One – David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron

After smashing the Penguins 6-4 on Monday Night, the Bruins will be back at work tonight. The B’s have a matchup on the road against the mediocre Montreal Canadians and once again should produce. This line is a nightly writeup so I am not sure what more needs to be said about them at this point. Individually, you can use Pasta for a one off if just looking to fill out a cash line but as the last few slates have shown, ideally you want all three in order to collect all of the goals and assists. I don’t think you necessarily need all three for cash tonight so I think the Pasta one off is fine in that context but stacking makes sense for tournaments. Their ownership might be a bit lighter than usual given the big slate. The odds just came out at the time of writing with Boston a -120 road favorite which seems a bit low.

New York Islanders One – Mathew Barzal, Anders Lee, Josh Bailey

The Islanders currently come in a slate high -260 favorite just edging the Toronto Maple Leafs for the honor. The Ottawa Senators performed very well last night, particularly on the offensive end, as they smoked the Rangers 6-2. However, now they find themselves on the second end of a back to back, this time against a much stronger team defensively. I think with Ottawa’s open play there will be many high danger opportunities for the Islanders on the counter attack.

The best way to approach this spot comes in the form of the three man pairing of Mathew Barzal, Anders Lee, and Josh Bailey. All three also share time on the New York Islanders power play unit giving them add opportunity and correlation. They will be able to match at their pleasure being at home, so in a good position to exploit Ottawa’s worst defensive lines. If looking to pair an Islanders defenseman, there are two primary choices. Ryan Pulock has first line correlation and Devin Toews shares ice time with all three of the aforementioned skaters on the power play. It all comes down to which arrangement you are looking to exploit. If looking for a cheap one off play not affiliated with the top line, Derek Brassard has been en fuego with goals in all of his last five games.

Toronto One – Andreas Johnsson, William Nylander, and Austin Matthews, Morgan Rielly (Add-On)

We have west coast team that allows a lot of shots coming to the east coast to face a Toronto team capable of putting up their fair share. Jonathan Quick will be in net for the Kings and he has been nothing short of a disaster this season with a 4.55 GAA and .858 save %. I would expect this line to get the most ownership on the night and be the most common line in cash lines. At minimum, I would make sure to have Austin Matthews in cash as he is the standout play of the three. Morgan Rielly has not been producing quite on the level one would expect, although the absence of John Tavares might be an factor. That being said, I think in a tournament stack I would find a way to fit him in alongside the other three in order to increase the potential upside in case Toronto goes off.

San Jose One – Evander Kane, Kevin Labanc, Thomas Hertl, Erik Karlsson (Add-On), Brent Burns (Add-On) – This line is much better on FanDuel

On FanDuel, this line gets a huge discount so I like them a lot more there. It’s not optimal to try to attack Robin Lehner. Therefore, this play gets a boost if Corey Crawford is in net by any means given that prior to the day off Lehner had appearances in two games. This line also has full power play correlation so there is no concern there. If you were trying to pick off just one it would be Evander Kane who stands out, but it would make more sense to run this line together. From there, Erik Karlsson is still fairly cheap on DraftKings and he has the power play correlation with this line. Meanwhile, Brent Burns is paired alongside them on the first line. Both of those defenseman can also be used as standalone plays alongside lines from other teams as they have individual upside as well.

Honorable Mentions: Carolina Two – Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, Warren Foegele; Winnipeg One – Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor

David Pastrnak – Over 5.5 Fantasy Points – Despite everything that he does on a nightly basis, this threshold of 5.5 Fantasy Points doesn’t seem to go up at all. I don’t think I have ever wrote him up here to not have him meet the over. Hopefully, I didn’t just jinx him.

Dougie Hamilton – Over 3.5 Fantasy Points – This seems like another safe bet given the wide variety of Dougie Hamilton’s nightly contributions at the moment.
