MLB DFS Winners and Losers: Santana, Sanchez and More

There was a 14 game slate on Wednesday May 29th. I will go into detail on some players who performed really well and a couple who underachieved. Points and salaries are based on DraftKings.

Winners

Carlos Santana ($4,900)

Carlos Santana and the Indians played in Boston against the Red Sox on Wednesday and got the win in a high scoring game, 14-9. Santana was 3-for-4 and was a single away from hitting for the cycle. He added two walks, four runs scored, and five RBI. He was good for 45 fantasy points and the top scorer on the day. Santana has had a good year to this point and is batting .284 with an OPS of .922. He has hit 10 home runs and has 34 RBI. He has 38 strikeouts to go with 40 walks. Santana busted out of a mini-slump, as he had only three hits in his last last six games.

Santana’s Outlook

The Indians have a four game series with the Chicago White Sox on the road, starting Thursday. The White Sox pitching staff has struggled this year. They have a team ERA of 5.03 and allow an opposing batting average of .260. Although Santana has struggled in May, with a batting average of .231, this could be a spot to build on his big game. I will be looking to roster Santana as a high upside player in this series against the White Sox.

Anibal Sanchez ($7,200)

Anibal Sanchez of the Washington Nationals got the win on Wednesday over the Braves. In his first start since coming off the IL, Sanchez pitched a gem, allowing only two base runners over six innings. He gave up one hit and one walk while striking out seven. He gave his owners 30.30 fantasy points. Sanchez has not had great numbers so far this year and has an ERA of 4.47 with a WHIP of 1.51. Wednesday was his first win of the year and he now has a record of 1-6. He has a K/9 of nearly nine.

Sanchez’s Outlook

Sanchez’s next projected start will come against the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox have struggled scoring runs this year while having a decent team batting average. They score only 4.15 runs per game, ranking them 23rd in the league, but they have a team batting average of .250, which ranks 14th. Sanchez has not been a quality starter overall this year and has one good start coming off the IL. I will not get me back on the bandwagon, even against a vulnerable offense. Sanchez took losses in five straight games before being sent to the IL. I am staying away for now.

Juan Soto ($5,000)

Soto was a big reason the Nationals won big on Wednesday, accounting for six runs. He went 2-for-4 with a home run. He scored four times while adding two RBI. Soto also struck out twice and walked twice. His owners were rewarded with 29 fantasy points. Soto has had a good year so far and has been especially productive lately. He has batting average of .291 while hitting .349 in the month of May. His OPS numbers reflect the same as his at.892/988. Thiswas Soto’s 13th straight game with a hit and he had seven multi-hit games over that span.

Soto’s Outlook

The Nationals start a three game series in Cincinatti on Friday. The Reds have had a good pitching staff so far this year but have been a little more vulnerable at home than on the road. They have a home team ERA of 3.68 while giving up an opposing batting average of .230. The Reds have scuffled the last week as well, and have a team ERA of 5.90 over their last seven games. Soto has been one of the hottest hitters in the league this month and I expect that to continue in this series and moving forward. He is a young star in the making.

Losers

Kevin Gausman ($8,300)

The Braves were blown out by the Nationals on Wednesday and it was a long first inning for Gausman. He was only able to get through one inning, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out one. He scored -17.75 fantasy points and surely ruined any chances to get in the money for your team. Gausman has not had a good start tand fell to 2-4 after this loss. His ERA is now at 5.56 and his WHIP is 1.38. Gausman’s K/9 is at 9.33. He has not gotten through more than six innings since April 17th.

Gausman’s Outlook

Gausman’s next projected start is on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates offense has struggled this year but has been better in the month of May. They are averaging 4.69 runs per game in May with a team batting average .of 264. Gausman has not looked good this year and with Pittsburgh finding a bit of a rhythm lately, I will be staying away from Gausman in this spot. I will also most likely be staying away from him in DraftKings for the foreseeable future.

Eduardo Escobar ($5,700)

Escobar and the Diamondbacks took the loss on the road to the Rockies Wednesday. Escobar was a big disappointment. In a plus matchup playing at Coors Field, Escobar went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. He struck out in the top of the ninth for the last out of the game. Escobar has had a good year to this point and was really hot coming into this game. He came into this one on a seven game hit streak, with 12 hits over that span. His batting average is now at .283 and his OPS is at .894.

Escobar’s Outlook

The Diamondbacks have a day game against the Rockies on Thursday. I expect Escobar to slot right back into the three spot in the order and get back on track. The Rockies pitching staff, at home, has a team ERA of 6.22. They allow an opposing batting average of .297 at home. Their opponent’s OPS is also high at home, at .854. These numbers are all last or second to last in the league. Roster Escobar Thursday, and watch the points come in.

Injury Report

Mitch Moreland has been placed on the 10-day IL with a lower back strain.

Carlos Correa is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a fractured rib. He is on the IL along with teammates George Springer and Jose Altuve.
