MLB DFS Hitter Stacks for DraftKings and FanDuel on 8/14/2022

Welcome to the Sunday edition of the Stack City, where I’ll be going through the top MLB DFS Stacks on DraftKings and Fanduel.

Once again, we have a large afternoon slate that serves as the featured slot for the largest MLB DFS contests, and once again, the only thing different between the DraftKings and FanDuel player pool is FD’s addition of the Coors Field game to the end of DK’s 10-game 1:37 PM EST slate. Before you tackle the heavy lifting in your analysis, make sure you head over to Adam’s Starting Rotation, the best daily article you can read on MLB DFS SP options.

Now it’s time to get to the stacks and build that bankroll!

MLB DFS Hitter Stacks – 1:37 PM EST

St, Louis Cardinals vs. Aaron Ashby

My recommendation of the Cardinals is a bit complicated here, but it comes down to what each opposing force does well and the momentum they carry into the matchup. The Cards have the best team wOBA (.373) and ISO (.234) in baseball over the past two weeks, along with a walk rate over 10% and a K rate of just 17.2% in that 14-day span — one where they won 9-out-of-12 games and swept the Yankees. They just find ways to get on base and with a lineup full of guys like Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Dylan Carlson and Tyler O’Neill, they can pile up the runs in a hurry.

Ashby’s strengths — an array of plus pitches and strikeout ability in a relatively undeveloped repertoire — are tempered by his lack of experience and control. While his profile bodes well for the future — and I love using him against lineups without the same level of patience and poise as St. Louis — he’s not in such a great spot today. This team already touched him up for a few dingers in an April outing that also showed their ability to get him throwing a bit wild (4 BB in 4.0 IP).

We can also give some consideration to the value plays the Cards offer, including Lars Nootbar at just $2,400 and the platoon midle infielders (Tommy Edman, Paul DeJong) who usually face the LHP. The Cards seem to have that part of their lineup maintenance all worked out this season and they stand out as one of the top stacks today.

Chicago White Sox vs. Tyler Alexander

If there’s a stack I like just as much as the Cards, it’s the ChiSox, who face underwhelming southpaw Tyler Alexander on their home turf in the South Side. While the White Sox haven’t spent the last 14 days mashing the cover off the ball, they do have the second-highest team batting average vs. LHP this season and have a bevy of big boppers (Luis Robert, Joe Abreu, Adnrew Vaughn, A.J.Pollock) with soaring wOBAs against lefties.

Alexander has a few things going for him, and many of the featured, high-upside stacks are in similar predicaments today in that there’s no true “gas can” among the SPs they’re facing. For one, he’s coming off his longest outing of 2022 (7.0 IP vs CLE), and he also throws the kitchen sink at you with four pitches in his repertoire (the FB and SL are plus, while the cutter is average and change-up needs work).

I’m most interested in Robert, Abreu and Eloy Jimenez, the three hitters who do best against FB-SL combo, a cheap Seby Zavala at C and Josh Harrison at 2B if he leads off (at just $3,300).

Houston Astros vs. Cole Irvin

We know what the Astros are capable of, even against the lone bright spot for the Oakland A’s rotation in 2022. Cole Irvin has already faced the Astros four times this season and he’s beaten them twice. But I’m willing to stack up a few pieces in Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, Trey Mancini Alex Bregman and value plays Jake Meyers and Martin Maldonado knowing how well they it against LHP.

The Astros aren’t the safest stack on the board since they’ve had just one homer in Irvin’s last 24.2 IP against them, but we know it’s hard to keep Houston inside its own ballpark if you keep giving them chances to light you up.

Also consider for hitting stacks:

Sneaky GPP Stack — Atlanta Braves vs. Braxton Garrett: Garrett is an impressive pitcher who can mow guys down, but he’s yet to face the Braves this season and his pitch arsenal doesn’t exactly match up well against this bunch.

Chicago Cubs vs. Justin Dunn: Keep an eye on the weather, but the Cubs are a viable option against any starter carrying a 5.79/6.98 ERA/FIP.

Tampa Bay Rays stack vs. Jordan Lyles: I would be remiss and given the cold shoulder in Discord if I didn’t mention that the Rays could be in play in GPPs today.

FD special: Tommy Henry vs. Ryan Feltner are the SPs in ARI-COL, so make sure you have at least 3 or 4 Coors Field game stacks out of every 10 or so builds on FD!

I'm a writer from upstate NY in a cool little Hudson River town called Coxsackie. Too many interests to list, but the films of David Lynch, the books of Kurt Vonnegut, the music of Jack White and the maddening sport of golf are near the top of my list. Big into DFS, specializing in baseball, football, golf and hoops. I've written for, RotoExperts and Baseball America, to name a few.
